Wetson, Anne Margaret. "Ecophysiology of the halophyte Suaeda maritima." Thesis, University of Sussex, 2008. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.488565.

Abstract:
Suaeda maritima is a widely occurring annual halophyte that experiences the fluctuating salinity and hypoxia of tidal cycles on salt-marshes. During dormancy, seeds survive in saline, hypoxic mud to germinate when spring-time temperatures reach about 15 °C. Plants of Suaeda maritima have wide salinity tolerance but little work has been published regarding interlinked waterlogging. The effects of saline waterlogging on growth and ion accumulation were investigated in tanks in a glasshouse where tidal flow was simulated and in aerated and hypoxic saline culture solution in a controlled environm

Abstract:
Suaeda maritima is an annual halophyte commonly found in salt-marshes. Its salt tolerance has been well studied, though there is little published on the effect of simultaneous waterlogging. The effects of saline waterlogging on growth, antioxidants (glutathione and total polyphenolic compounds, antioxidant activity) and oxidative damage were investigated with simulated tides in a controlled glasshouse and on plants collected from the field. Flooded shoots possessed higher levels of antioxidants than those from plants growing in well-drained situations, in the glasshouse and the field. The effe

Abstract:
Suaeda maritima (L) Dumort is a polymorphic annual species of the family Chenopodiaceae that in the UK occurs exclusively in coastal salt marshes. The main aim of this study has been to examine the phenotypic variations within and between its populations in the heterogeneous microenvironments of a salt marsh. Detailed field characterizations of the growth, seed production and seed heteromorphism of four Suaeda maritima populations at Stiffkey salt marsh were conducted over three consecutive years, revealing considerable consistent phenotypic variation between populations on the high marsh, hig

World agriculture is challenged by the increasing demand on diminishing resources of fresh water. Climate change and salinity are both issues, resulting in a major international research effort to breed more resistant crops. The aim of this thesis is to contribute to this effort by determining how wheat varieties respond to salt stress. This study describes an analysis of three wheat varieties (Gamina and Bohoth 105, from Libya and of reported salt tolerance, and Hereward) representing different palis of a salt tolerance spectrum. The plant cell wall is a living and dynamic compartment of the plant cell. Its many diverse functions range from cell expansion and differentiation to defence and signalling. Furthermore, there is currently a growing body of evidence which suggests that the cell wall/apoplast also plays an important role in cell water relations. The aim of this study was to highlight the importance of apoplastic solutes in plant cell water relations, particularly in turgor regulation.
