The chapter compares business cycle fluctuations in sub-Saharan African countries to the rest of the world. Its main results are: (i) African economies stand out by their macroeconomic volatility, which is reflected in the volatility of output and other macro variables; (ii) inflation and output tend to be negatively correlated in SSA countries; (iii) unlike advanced economies and emerging markets (EMs), trade balances and current accounts are acyclical in SSA; (iv) the volatility of consumption and investment relative to GDP is larger than in other countries; (v) the cyclicality of consumptio

This book has been a long time in the writing. When I first aired some of its constituent thoughts, at conferences held in 2002 and 2003, deflationary accounts of Nietzsche’s philosophy of agency seemed to be sweeping all before them. Nietzsche was portrayed as a sceptic if not an outright eliminativist about ‘will’ and ‘action’, the former tending to be reduced to a system of sub-personal drives, the latter to misinterpreted events. I didn’t much care for any of this. Happily, however, fashions changed. For reasons having nothing whatever to do with me, more positive and fruitful accounts of

The low overall post-operative mortality rate conceals the existence of a sub-group of high-risk patients, which accounts for over 80% of post-operative deaths. Age, co-morbid disease, limited functional capacity, and an emergency presentation for major surgery are hallmarks risk. The magnitude, duration, and consequences of post-operative morbidity are determined by a complex interplay between the indication for surgery, the resulting tissue injury, and patient factors. A number of methods including risk scoring and cardiopulmonary exercise testing can be used to identify the high-risk group.

Chronic infection with the parasite Schistosoma haematobium is associated with squamous cell carcinoma of the bladder, and is most prevalent in Egypt and sub-Saharan Africa. The very definition of “illusion” is elusive. Various distinct ontologies are considered. The concept is tightly bound to the understanding of reality, awareness, “God’s eye,” objectivity, subjectivity, emphatic relations, and several others. Here the distinctions between “illusion,” “ambiguity, “delusion,” and “deception,” are clarified. The very notion of illusion is closely tied to conceptual approaches to mind. Especially the dichotomy between a top-down “controlled hallucination” and a bottom-up “inverse physics” approach accounts for much confusion in the literature. It is suggested that

This chapter reviews empirical evidence on the economic incentives that influence the decision to supply transactional sex, and it discusses several policies that may affect supply decisions. While the primary motivation for entering the transactional-sex market is the large income premium relative to other jobs, unexpected income shocks also affect sexual behavior.
