The subaltern has frequently been understood as a figure of exclusion ever since it was first highlighted by the early Subaltern Studies collective’s creative reading of Antonio Gramsci’s carceral writings. I propose three alternative figures to comprehend specific dimensions of Gramsci’s theorizations: the “irrepressible subaltern,” the “hegemonic subaltern,” and the “citizen-su

Abstract This article uses a case study to analyze the actions of ruling classes and social movement organizations in urban politics. The study observes these groups’ disputes and interactions with the state, and how different strategies, actions, and political projects of the subaltern classes have influenced the orientation of urban development. In a broad time-scale approach, the article discusses relations of hegemony, the process of institutionalization of movements, disputes in society and within the state, and the heterogeneity of the political projects that guide the subaltern classes.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore the links between “informal economies” and the concept of “resistance.” The author argues that the petty illegalities of the dominated and subaltern classes should be seen in their connections to the illegalism of the élites and the state. Within this framework, the informal economy is seen as both the outcome of a set of material conditions aiming at the subordinated inclusion of entire classes of citizens, and the mark of the willingness by these same subalterns to evade the bonds imposed on them by the legislations and the social hierarchies.

Abstract:
The first case study deals with the ‘mother’ of Egyptian documentary making Ateyyat el Abnoudy, and traces her career as a lawyer, journalist and filmmaker. As a pioneer of politically engaged and socially preoccupied documentary, she has influenced many young female filmmakers. Since the early seventies, her films, both short and feature length, have been celebrated throughout the world at festivals and retrospectives, but remain controversial in Egypt itself. This case study looks in detail at her early short films, Horse of Mud (1971), Sad Song of Touha (1972) and The Sandwich (1975), as well as feature length documentaries Permissible Dreams (1982), Responsible Women (1994) and Days of Democracy (1996). Dealing with the lower classes, women’s issues, education and illiteracy among women, their personal status and their political situation in Egypt, the films reflect a concern with the subaltern woman. The filmmaker’s concern with the subaltern woman stems from an intellectual preoccupation with inequality and a professional insight into the unwillingness of the state to deal with women’s problems.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses the transnational network built by Italian anarchists in South America at the beginning of the 20th century. The meeting of many activists allowed the formation of several affinity groups working together, an important improvement to the labor movement. Through biographical analyzes of the main anarchists based in São Paulo, Brazil, it is intended to show that the affinity relationships were mediated by the social identities of the partners. Its social aspects paint a picture more or less similar: all activists came from subaltern social classes with few or no material sources and they formed their political understanding in the prisons in contact with the masters of Italian anarchism. If in the youth they practiced the individualist actions typical of the poor classes, they started to occupy anarchist-communist positions in mature life, but always facing any kind of authority.

This chapter is a summary overview of how dietary advice for women changed from Galen through the Early Modern period. Literature from both anthropology and folklore are used to compare how both contemporary and historical foodways can inform our understanding of medieval medicine, and how women face some of the same cultural obstacles today regarding pregnancy and health as they have in other eras. Looking at folk medicine and traditional foodways can help us better understanding many aspects of the life of subaltern classes in the Middle Ages and beyond, and how food, medicine, and diet are ultimately culture-bound, even when they purport to be scientific.

In order to move beyond the familiar ‘epidemic–institutional nexus’ in studies of disease and medicine in modern India, this chapter argues for the importance of examining the health of the subaltern classes through three largely social and spatial arenas—the street, the factory, and the home. While these locations offered some health benefits and facilities, they also presented substantial threats to health – through the creation of novel disease environments, through accidents and pollution in the home, the workplace and on the street, and through deficient diets and new food-processing techniques. Indians faced further danger from modern machines and novel forms of technology. Taken together, these locations require a fresh understanding of what constituted health in modern Indian society.
