Abstract:
Generally speaking, the subaqueous tunnels can be regarded as the shallow-buried ones. Consequently, the classical problem of an elastic half plane with a round cavity, loaded arbitrarily along the surface boundary, can be used to obtain the stress and displacement fields of the surrounding rock for this type of tunnels. The solution uses the complex variable method, with a conformal mapping onto a circular ring in the image plane. Because of the convergence of the complex potentials throughout the annular region, the coefficients in the Laurent series expansion form for complex functions can

On the basis of ground geology and hydrogeology of an urban river, a municipal tunnel in which public pipes and cables are placed is designed to cross the river by means of open cut method. The main structure of the municipal tunnel and its waterproof measures are both summarized in this paper. Reinforced concrete frame structure with one story and three box-shaped sections is used in the design of the municipal tunnel. Both self-waterproof structure and waterproof sheet are applied to prevent ground water from permeating into the subaqueous tunnel. The installation of public cables and pipes

A 1.5 km segment of Ingraham ridge, a stratified sand and gravel ridge in northeastern New York, is composed dominantly of subaqueous outwash deposits. The core of the ridge segment may include subordinate subglacial tunnel deposits. The subaqueous outwash is composed mainly of interbedded sediment gravity flow, bar, dune, and ripple deposits that occur in channels. Sheetlike cross-stratified and cross-laminated deposits also are common, particularly on the distal western margin of the ridge segment. The ridge segment is draped by glaciolacustrine laminated sand, silt, and clay and glaciomarin

This paper summarizes the design of reinforced concrete structure and its enclosure for a subaqueous tunnel used to cross a river in urban highway line. The tunnel mainly consists of open-cut section on river bank and cut-cover section under river bed. Their structure and enclosure are both illustrated in the paper according to site geology and general layout of urban highway line. The use of rotary bored pile and soil mixing wall to preserve the stability of open-cut foundation pit are summarized in the paper.

Landscape analysis, mapping, sedimentology, shallow geophysics, and borehole data are integrated to better understand the complex landform-sediment geometries and event sequences of the Oak Ridges Moraine, southern Ontario. A model for the origin of the Oak Ridges Moraine is based on the recognition that the moraine is built on a high-relief, erosional surface (unconformity) consisting of drumlin uplands and a network of deep, steep-walled, interconnected valleys (tunnel channels). The development of the moraine is thought to have occurred in four stages: I, subglacial sedimentation; II, subaq

Abstract The Oak Ridges Moraine in southern Ontario is a ca. 160 km long east-west trending ridge of sand and gravel situated north of Lake Ontario. Study of the Oak Ridges Moraine in the Humber River watershed was undertaken to assess its role in the groundwater system of the buried Laurentian Valley. The Oak Ridges Moraine is interpreted to have been deposited in three stages. Stage I records rapid deposition from hyperconcentrated flows where tunnel channels discharged into a subglacial lake in the Lake Ontario basin. Low-energy basin sedimentation of Stage II was in a subglacial and ice-co

High-accuracy level underwater acoustical surveying plays an important role in ocean engineering applications, such as subaqueous tunnel construction, oil and gas exploration, and resources prospecting. This novel imaging method is eager to break through the existing theory to achieve a higher accuracy level of surveying. Multibeam Synthetic Aperture Sonar (MBSAS) is a kind of underwater acoustical imaging theory that can achieve 3D high-resolution detecting and overcome the disadvantages of traditional imaging methods, such as Multibeam Echo Sounder (MBES) and Synthetic Aperture Sonar (SAS).

AbstractAeolian barchan dunes on Earth and other planets have been widely investigated. Much of the understanding of barchan dune morphodynamics comes from field observations, numerical simulations, and downsized water‐tunnel experiments as well. Many of the evolution of barchan dunes in water‐tunnel experiments are similar to those of aeolian cases, although they have notable differences in scale, sand particle motion and hydrodynamic characteristics. Here, we first review the literature on the local similarities between aeolian and downsized subaqueous barchan dunes, focusing on (a) dune for
