We used transdiaphragmatic peak twitch tension (PTT) elicited by bilateral phrenic nerve stimulation to ascertain whether low-frequency (LF) diaphragmatic fatigue (DF) can be induced in spontaneously breathing humans by a combination of an inspiratory resistive load (IRL) and graded treadmill exercise (GXT). Our subjects were 10 young males with normal cardiopulmonary function. Before exercise we measured PTT in each subject by administering supramaximal electrical pulses of 100-microseconds duration at a frequency of 1 Hz to each phrenic nerve with the subjects breath holding at functional re

The Profile Activities (Section 3) contribute to generating the biomarker. Requirements are placed on the Actors that participate in those activities as necessary to achieve the Claim. Assessment Procedures (Section 4) defines the technical methods to be used for evaluating conformance with profile requirements. This includes the steps needed for clinical sites and equipment vendors to be compliant with the Profile. This QIBA Profile (Sma

Research projects have resulted in the development of improved guidance for assessing the remaining strength of corroded pipelines. New guidance has been developed for assessing: Closely spaced corrosion defects Corrosion defects in high strength pipelines Corrosion defects in pipelines subject to combined internal pressure and external loading Corrosion defects in pipelines subject to cyclic pressure loading Corrosion defects in vintage, low toughness pipelines This Guidance Document is a revision to the version issued in 2002 (PRCI Report Catalog No. L51958). It provides recommended practice

Because households are subject to more background risk than previously considered, the estimated model implies a substantially lower coeffcient of risk aversion and a lower optimal risky share for older workers with low wealt

Abstract:
This paper examines how the effects of transit improvements vary with land use policies using the case of Bengaluru, one of India’s largest cities with a metro system and subject to low floor-area ratios. We build a quantitative spatial model and show that the metro system increases citywide output and welfare, even net of costs. However, the net gains are several times larger when floor-area ratio limits are relaxed near metro stations (transit-oriented development) or in the city center.

This Insight Note contributes to the growing body of knowledge on teaching practices that foster student learning and achievement by analysing in-depth qualitative data from classroom observations and teacher interviews. Much of the research on teachers and teaching in development literature focuses on observable and quantified factors, including qualifications and training. But simply being qualified (with a university degree in education or subject areas), or trained in certain ways (e.g., coaching versus in-service) explains very little of the variation in learning outcomes (Kane and Staige

Managers are challenged with the impact of problematic plants, including exotic, invasive, and pest plant species. Information on the cover, distribution, and location of these plants is essential for developing risk-based approaches to managing these species. Based on surveys conducted in 2006, 2011, 2015, and 2019, Heartland Network staff and contractors identified a cumulative total of 28 potentially problematic plant taxa in Arkansas Post National Memorial. Of the 23 species found in 2019, we characterized 9 as very low frequency, 7 as low frequency, 5 as medium frequency, and 2 as high fr

Swedish researchers are encouraged to share their research data, with a government goal for all publicly funded research to provide open research data by 2026. Hoshi Larsson (2023) investigated the extent and location of research data from LiU researchers. However, the search was limited to datasets with DOIs listed in DataCite Commons, suggesting that many datasets were excluded in the investigation. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to identify, through articles’ descriptions of open data, to what extent LiU’s researchers are sharing their research data and open code, and if so, which

Abstract:
How should bank capital requirements be set to deal with climate-related transition risks? We build a general equilibrium macro banking model where production requires fossil and low-carbon energy intermediate inputs, and the banking sector is subject to volatility risk linked to changes in energy prices. Introducing carbon taxes to reduce carbon emissions from fossil energy induces risk spillovers into the banking sector. Sectoral capital requirements can effectively address risks from energy-related exposures, benefiting household welfare and indirectly facilitating capital reallocation. Abs

Energy consumption has doubled since 1990, fostered by economic growth and the expansion of middle class. In this context, promote energy efficiency, in a broad sense, is urgent and rational. Brazil has a relatively long history in promoting energy efficiency at final user level. A landmark of this process is the Brazilian Labeling Program, launched in 1984, as direct consequen
