Abstract:
Purpose This paper aims to contribute to the subsidiary initiative literature by studying the interaction between a headquarters and its subsidiary during an initiative process that has the potential to “wag the corporate dog” that is, for the global corporation’s promising subsidiary initiative in a strategically important emerging market to question the corporation’s prevailing schemata. Design/methodology/approach The longitudinal single case study draws on evidence from the Indian subsidiary of Swedish Volvo Bus and its efforts to introduce a value product in India. Findings The study argues that wag the dog initiatives provoke the corporate immune system independent of the initiative’s potential and the subsidiary’s autonomy and legitimacy. If the idea behind the wag the dog initiative is perceived as strategically important for the multinational corporation, then the corporate immune system tries to engulf – most likely unsuccessfully – the idea within the prevailing schemata. Failed attempts to engulf the initiative weaken the corporate immune system temporarily, thereby opening the organization to revitalization of the original initiative. Resistance, even though weakened, from the corporate immune system continues to exist. Practical implications Subsidiary managers need to avoid having their headquarters perceive an initiative as a wag the dog initiative by balancing their need to sell persistently the initiative with avoiding negative attention. Originality/value This study is a pioneer in explaining how the corporate immune system reacts towards wag the dog initiatives taken from subsidiaries in large emerging markets.

Abstract:
Young intact maize plants were placed in an experimental chamber specially designed to allow continuous measurement of transpiration and photosynthetic rates in defined environmental conditions. After two circadian periods, leaf samples were collected at the end of the night period and after 150 min of light exposure. Samples were immediately immersed in fixative bath and prepared for ultrastructural examination. In darkness, when stomata were closed, most of the observed guard cell mitochondria exhibited the characteristic morphology of the resting state, while the others appeared in the respiring state. In subsidiary cells, the distribution showed an inverse pattern. After photoactive stomatal opening, all mitochondria of the guard cells were in the resting state 3 configuration, but in subsidiary cells they were in active state 4 configuration. These differences in mitochondrial ultrastructure corresponding to their location in guard cells or subsidiary cells during photoactive stomatal opening provide information about energy expenditure in the cells of the stomatal complex. Subsidiary cells appear to play a role more important than merely an ionic reservoir.

Abstract:
The ultrastructure of the guard cell complex of Persea borbonia is described. The guard cells are embedded in the midregion of the ventral wall of subsidiary cells. The outer portions of the subsidiary cell wall is extensively thickened forming a domelike structure with a large slot opening projecting above the stomatal aperture. The outer walls of epidermal cells are also extensively thickened. The fused ventral cell walls have perforations resulting in cytoplasmic continuity between guard cells. The guard cells and subsidiary cells contain normal cytoplasmic constituents, including chloroplasts. Preliminary studies of three other Lauraceae species, Persea americana, Sassafras albidum, and Laurus nobilis, indicate a similarly structured stomatal complex.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT:This article examines the role played by workmen's trains in allowing working-class families to move out into London's suburbs between 1860 and 1914. While previous scholarship has argued that these trains effectively only benefited skilled artisans or a working-class elite, it is argued here that from the 1880s onwards they were increasingly used by unskilled workers in irregular employment. Furthermore, they were also used by women and children earning low wages in subsidiary employment. Ultimately, it is demonstrated that a much broader spectrum of the working class were living in the suburbs and commuting than has been previously supposed.

Abstract:
The fauna of turkey helminths was studied in specialized and subsidiary farms of the population in 23 districts of the republic belonging to 4 natural and climatic zones: Kur-Aras and Lankaran lowlands, foothill and mountain belts of the Great and Lesser Caucasus. We have registered 12 species of turkey helminths, of which one species is recorded for the first time in turkeys in the CIS, and 9 species in Azerbaijan. When opening 676 turkeys, infection with helminths was revealed by 75.4%, including nematodes — 74.4%, cestodes — 7.8%, trematodes — 0.14%.

Abstract:
AbstractThe deployment of cleaner production technologies is supposed to be crucial to mitigate the effect of climate change. The diffusion of technology from developed to developing countries can be done through different channels. It can be a business decision such as firms' relocation, opening of a subsidiary or the adoption of technology by southern firms, or it may be decided at the government level. This paper investigates, in a two-country model (North and South), the relationship between the diffusion of mitigation technologies, firms' relocation and the environment. We assume that both countries implement a carbon tax and there are two kinds of production technology used: a relatively clean technology and a dirty one. This paper theoretically shows that the technology diffusion by technology adoption, public transfer or subsidiary creation induces a decrease in relocation, while technology diffusion via purchasing dirty southern firms may increase the number of relocated firms. The paper also demonstrates that technology diffusion may have perverse effects in the long run. Indeed, total emissions may increase with technology diffusion since southern firms become more competitive.

Abstract:
Purpose: The purpose of the paper is to explore the entry modes of EU firms setting up operations in Vietnam. Design/methodology/approach: we use a case study approach on Haymarket, Cadbury, Creative Education, Fairchild, Aventis and Artemisinin and Farming International using interviews from managerial professionals in Vietnam. Findings: Despite the fact that Vietnam has been opening up for more than 20 years, licensing is the preferred entry mode because of the risks involved in venturing with local firms; that preference signals a low level commitment and a high perception of risk and state interference. In line with Vietnam transition to state - rather than private market - capitalism, a foreign company opting for a joint-venture will do so with a state-owned rather than privately-owned company. The choice of a subsidiary can be explained by the lack of trust in partners and institutions, not by improvement in the socio-political environment. Limitations: In determining the entry mode strategy, the paper focuses on the Uppsala school’s “psychic distance” (e.g. cultural distance, lack of trust) rather than on firm-specific advantages (Rugman, 1980; 2006). Key-words: international entry mode; emerging markets; subsidiary; joint-venture; India; Vietnam

Abstract:
The effects of overseas expansion on shareholders wealth were studied in this paper. The results for a sample of 179 announcements of overseas expansion showed positive and significant cumulative average residuals (CARs). The results for initial overseas expansion were more positive than for subsequent overseas expansion. Five different methods of expansion were examined. Announcements of exports results in the highest, positive and significant CARs. CARs for licensing, opening an overseas subsidiary and acquiring a growing concern were marginally significant, while CARs associated with joint venture announcements were positive but insignificant. The results did not indicate that any differences were associated with the degree of industrialization of the host country.

Abstract:
Billy Elliot (2000) has been widely recognised as an important British film of the post-Thatcher period. It has been analysed using multiple disciplinary methodologies, but almost always from the theoretical frameworks of class and gender/sexuality. The film has sometimes been used not so much as a focus of analysis itself but as a conduit for exploring issues such as class deprivation or neo-liberal politics and economics. Such studies tend to use the film's perceived shortcomings as a starting point to critique society's wider failings to interrogate constructions of gender and sexuality. This article argues that an examination of the identity formation of some of the film's subsidiary characters shows how fluidity and transformation are key to the film's opening up of a jouissance which is enabled by but goes beyond its central character.

Abstract:
The chapter focuses on the gabinetes fonográficos active in Barcelona from 1898 onward. It aims to analyze why Barcelona’s early recording industry remained more precarious and less successful than that in Madrid, and advances two reasons: the failure of the Barcelona gabinetes to position themselves within local discourses around science, technology, modernity, and Catalan national identity; and their increasingly peripheral location in the developing urban space of Barcelona. The chapter then discusses how Barcelona eventually came to lead the Spanish recording industry after the advent of the gramophone, with a subsidiary of Gramophone and a new generation of record shops opening in the city.
