We have examined the relationship between tension, an intrinsic stimulator of axonal elongation, and the culture substrate, an extrinsic regulator of axonal elongation. Chick sensory neurons were cultured on three substrata: (a) plain tissue culture plastic; (b) plastic treated with collagen type IV; and (c) plastic treated with laminin. Calibrated glass needles were used to increase the tension loads on growing neurites. We found that growth cones on all substrata failed to detach when subjected to two to threefold and in some cases 5-10-fold greater tensions than their self-imposed rest tens

The role that bacterial surface hydrophobicity (surface tension) plays in determining the extent of adhesion of polymer substrates and phagocytic ingestion is reviewed. The early attachment phase in bacterial adhesion is shown to depend critically on the relative surface tensions of the three interacting phases; i.e., bacteria, substrate, and suspending liquid surface tension. When suspended in a liquid with a high surface tension such as Hanks balanced salt solution, the most hydrophobic bacteria adhere to all surfaces to the greatest extent. The equilibrium configuration of a liquid drop on a solid is determined by local energy balance. For a very stiff substrate, energy balance is represented by Young's equation. The equilibrium configuration near a line separating three fluids, in contrast, is determined by a balance of forces—their surface tensions—which is represented graphically by Neumann's triangle. We argue that these two are limiting cases of the more general situation of a drop on an elastic substrate in which both configurational energy balance and force balance must be satisfied independently. Based on these models, a simulation model is built in MATLAB/Simulink to analyze the main causes of substrate tension errors in the accumulator under uncontrolled conditions. It has been possible to test different hypotheses for mechano-regulated differentiation by attempting to simulate regenerative events such as bone fracture repair [2]. During such events, repeatable spatial and temporal patterns of tissue differentiation occur. More recently, in vitro studies have identified other environmental cues, such as substrate stiffness [3] and oxygen tension [4], as key regulators of MSC differentiation. The hypothesis of this study is that a computa

Abstract:
When there is an interface between a liquid and a solid, the angle between the surface of the liquid and the baseline of the contact surface is described as the contact angle. The contact angle is a measure of the wettability of a solid by a liquid. Measurement of the contact angle helps in all situations where solids and liquids meet and there is benefit gained by control of wetting and adhesion properties. Applications where contact angle values are especially important include development of hydrophobic or hydrophilic surface coatings, paints and varnishes, cleaning agents, printing process

Abstract:
For decades, researchers have sought to understand the adhesion of ice to surfaces so that low-cost ice mitigation strategies can be developed. Presently, the field of ice adhesion is still without formal standards for performing ice adhesion tests. The U.S. Army Corps Engineers’ Research and Development Center’s Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (ERDC-CRREL) has a longstanding history as an independent third party for ice adhesion testing services. Most notably, CRREL’s Zero-Degree Cone Test (ZDCT) has been an industry favorite for more than 30 years. Despite its wide acceptanc
