Abstract:
This study attempts to investigate the difficulties and problems that subtitlers may encounter in subtitling colloquial expressions from Arabic into English. To achieve the main objectives of the study, some authentic examples have been obtained from the subtitled film The Dupes and analyzed linguistically and translationally in order to identify the subtitling inaccuracies, to highlight the subtitling strategies used by the film's subtitler, and to draw other workable subtitling solutions for dealing with colloquialisms or slang language. Analysis isolates three major problems relevant to subtitling Arabic colloquial expressions into English: (1) some colloquialisms, especially those reflecting religious overtones, have been missubtitled, (2) some colloquialisms have been totally dropped out from subtitling (i.e. zero-subtitling), (3) and in subtitling certain colloquialisms, a considerable subtitling loss has occurred. Finally, to resolve such recalcitrant problems and difficulties, the study, in its concluding part, suggests some other practical subtitling mechanisms, other than the ones that have been adopted by the film's subtitler.

Abstract This essay examines a regional, not global, dimension of Chinese cinema: the Chinese character in its brushed form. Calligraphy and cinema have an intimate relationship in East Asia. Indeed, the ubiquity of the brushed word in cinema is one element that actually ties works in Korean, Japanese and Sinophone Asia together as a regional cinema. At the same time, I will explore the very specific difference of Chinese filmmakers’ use of written language. On first glance, cinema and calligraphy would appear as radically different art forms. On second glance, they present themselves as sister arts. Both are art forms built from records of the human body moving in (an absent) time and space. The essay ends with a consideration of subtitling, upon which Chinese cinema’s global dimension is predicated. How does investigating this very problem lead us to rethinking the nature of the cinematic subtitle, which is very much alive―a truly movable type?

The focus of this research is to identify the subtitling strategies applied in the subtitling of Romeo and Juliet movie. This research belongs to descriptive qualitative research along with purposive sampling techniques. The objects of the research are English sentences spoken by the actors and actress in Romeo and Juliet movie as a source text (ST) and its Indonesian subtitling as a target text (TT).The research findings show that the subtitling strategies applied in Romeo and Juliet movie are expansion, paraphrase, transfer, imitation, condensation, decimation, deletion, taming, and resignation. Among those strategies; condensation is the most dominant one due to the limited space and subtitling time appearance because in the subtitling process, there should be a thrifty translation whereas, the accuracy of Romeo and Juliet subtitling depends on the context covers the text, both situation context and cultural context. Abstract:
More than 100 empirical studies document that subtitling a video improves comprehension of the video. Standard subtitling practices have long been governed by the constraints of the field. In spite of the increased awareness of the need to develop subtitling practices along with new technologies, subtitling practitioners continue to have their hands tied by the constraints of the field and the norms of the profession. In contrast with the restrictions imposed by subtitling norms, recent research has returned to the possibility of creativity in subtitling. Further recent research in audiovisual translation (AVT) has begun to turn towards a multidisciplinary approach. A descriptive qualitative design is deemed to be an appropriate mode of inquiry for this study. The study was conducted at Politeknik Negeri Malang and the participants were students of D3 Study Program in English who have completed their subtitling course. The results illustrated that students agreed that multidisciplinary creative subtitling helps them make the video more interesting. Additionally, it was identified that the need for learning the technology towards preparing the creative subtitling is high.

This paper focuses on a relatively new and much discussed phenomenon on Flemish television: The practice of intralingual subtitling of Dutch, i.e. Dutch subtitling of native speakers of (varieties of) Dutch. Our study investigates the linguistic determinants of intralingual subtitling and subsequently confronts actual subtitling practice with viewer needs. The analyses reveal a striking inconsistency between intralingual subtitling practice in fiction versus non-fiction programs. This appears to be symptomatic of a tension between the official language policy in Flanders and present day linguistic reality. As such, subtitling practice subtly reflects the existence of shifting linguistic norms in Flanders.

This research focuses on the subtitling strategies and creative subtitling used in translating the Korean variety show Hot and Young Seoul Trip X NCT LIFE (2018) into Indonesian and the impact of fan subtitles to overcome language barriers. In order to draw more understanding, qualitative content analysis was applied to describe the subtitling strategies and creative subtitling used by the fansubbers in producing Indonesian subtitles. An online survey was conducted to determine the impact of the subtitling from the fans' perspective. The research findings on subtitling strategies were obtained from 1599 data and showed that there were eight strategies applied in this research. Amid those strategies, transfer with 1434 data found is the most used strategy, followed by imitation, dislocation, expansion, paraphrase, transcription, condensation, and deletion. Then, the creative subtitling used in the work using different colors, fonts, and punctuation that is influenced by field (topic), tenor (relationship), and mode (circumstances). The online survey results prescribe that the subtitles of the fan help the audience overcome language barriers by producing translated audiovisual content into their language. Therefore, the fansubbers' decision to combine subtitling strategies and creative subtitling helps the foreign audiences overcome language barriers

The fast pace of technology and the great revolution in the media industry have increased the demand for subtitling services to contribute to the dissemination of knowledge around the globe. This necessity for subtitling audiovisual products from English into Arabic has become daunting for Arab translators. Hence, the primary purpose of the present study is to identify the challenges of subtitling cultural-bond expression and investigate the impact of applying the Pederson Model in overcoming difficulties associated with subtitling in the Arabic Language. These difficulties are attributed to the fact that various modes of media embrace an abundance of cultural-bound expressions. The main question addressed in the study was how the Pederson Model contributes to translating and subtitling cultural-bound expressions into Arabic. Therefore, to reveal the myth of the potential challenges of subtitling cultural-bound expression, the study adopted a corpus-based approach based on the Pedersen model (2005). Excerpts from Friends, the famous American sitcom, were used in the study as a corpus to investigate difficulties associated with subtitling cultural-bound expressions, including pop culture, idioms, and phrases. In addition, the Pedersen taxonomy of subtitling strategies is applied in the study to examine the techniques used to subtitle cultural-bound expressions from English into Arabic. The corpus analysis based on Pedersen’s model has revealed the nature of subtitling difficulties associated with cultural-bound expressions. Moreover, Pedersen’s taxonomy of subtitling strategies has a critical and significant role in overcoming subtitling difficulties associated with culturally-bound expressions

Audiovisual translation is an academic term that covers both well-established and new ground-breaking linguistic and semiotic transfers like dubbing, subtitling, surtitling, respeaking, audiosubtitling, voice-over, simultaneous interpreting at film festivals, free-commentary and goblin translation, subtitling for the deaf and the hard of hearing, audiodescription, fansubbing and fandubbing. This article presents a classification of audiovisual translation modes or types, and discusses some interesting developments in the audiovisual translation market at the beginning of this new century. Dubbing countries are moving towards subtitling, subtitling countries are beginning to dub, voice-over countries are shifting towards dubbing and subtitling, while voice-over is moving into dubbing and subtitling countries and gaining ground with younger audiences.

The study undertaken sets out to explore if there is any difference in English comprehension when viewing TV-programs with or without subtitles, in the classroom. The research which has been executed prior to ours shows that lots of people spend more time watching television than they do reading books in their native language. Still, there is more research in reading than in the field of television and comprehension. Furthermore, there are very few studies in the area of subtitling. Media use in today’s society is unavoidable and we believe that future teachers should use television as an educational tool and incorporate multimedia in lesson plans in an effective way. It is our belief that the visual and oral input of television with subtitles can aid students in their ability to memorize and comprehend the content.The research was carried out in the south of Sweden with a class of ninth graders. Firstly, we tested their vocabulary skills through a word knowledge test. Secondly, we proceeded to divide the class into two groups. These groups later saw the same episode of an American TV series. One group saw the show with subtitles, and the other one without. After the show they answered questionnaires on the content of the program and later on six students were selected to be interviewed. These target students were questioned on their thoughts and attitudes towards subtitles, as well as tested on their ability to analyze the content of the show. Although no definite answers can be given from this degree paper, we came to some conclusions. The students’ attitudes towards subtitles differed. Four out of six students were negative towards the usage of subtitles in an educational setting, because they felt more challenged to comprehend the plot without them. The two remaining were positive to subtitles and would use them at all times as support to aid them in their English comprehension.

Eng.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, 2005.<br>Includes bibliographical references (leaves 70-72).<br>A system for rapid subtitling of audiovisual sequences was developed, and evaluated. This new system resulted in average time-savings of 50% over the previous work in the field. To subtitle a 27-minute English lecture, users saved 2.2 hours, spending an average of 1.9 hours timing the monologue. Subtitling a 20-minute Japanese animation resulted in similar savings. While subtitling is widely practiced, traditional speech boundary detection algorithms have proven insufficient for adoption when subtitling audiovisual sequences. Human-edited timing of subtitles is a dull and laborious exercise, yet with some human-guidance, basic systems may accurately align transcripts and translations in the presence of divergent speakers, multiple languages, and background noise. Since no known, fully-automatic recognition systems operate with sufficient accuracy for production-grade subtitle times, during playback the system disclosed treats user-supplied times as a priori data and adjusts those times using extracted features from concurrent data streams. In the application's oracle subsystem, packaged algorithms called oracles preprocess, filter, and present media data, using that data to adjust user-supplied times.<br>(cont.) The on-the-fly timing subsystem gathers user-supplied times and coordinates the oracles' adjustment of the data. The application was developed with attention to user interface design and data format support, and was sent to users for structured feedback. L’objectiu d’aquesta tesi és contribuir a la pràctica i la teoria de la subtitulació per a persones sordes (SPS), més concretament, per a nens i nenes sords. Després de l’anàlisi de les pràctiques de subtitulació actuals, en què es detecten força casos d’incoherència a l’hora de representar els elements no verbals (efectes sonors, informació paralingüística i música), aquesta recerca fa un pas endavant i proposa un nou codi de subtitulació accessible adreçat als més petits: els subtítols creactius. Aquests subtítols presenten la informació no verbal de manera visual, mitjançant l’ús de les convencions del llenguatge dels còmics. Són una proposta innovadora que canvia, ja d’inici, la manera d’entendre la subtitulació i la concep com un vestit a mida confeccionat d’acord amb les necessitats específiques de la discapacitat sensorial dels nens i nenes sords. S’ha dut a terme un estudi de cas per provar-ne la seva eficàcia amb l’audiència i, segons els resultats obtinguts, les característiques intrínseques dels subtítols creactius —dinamisme, creativitat i animació— no només han afavorit una bona rebuda entre els nenes i nenes sords, sinó també entre els oients. Per tant, els subtítols creactius són subtítols inclusius, subtítols per a tothom.<br>This thesis contributes to the theory and practice of subtitling for the deaf and the hard-of-hearing (SDH), especially for deaf children. After the analysis of current SDH practices, in which inconsistency has been found quite regularly in the conveyance of non-verbal elements (sound effects, paralinguistic features and music), the research in hand steps forward and suggests a completely newly designed subtitling code targeted at younger audiences: creactive subtitles. Creactive subtitles present the non-verbal information visually, by means of comics’ language conventions. They are an innovative proposal that changes the manner subtitles have been commonly conceived, since they are tailor-made according to the particular needs resulting from deaf children’s sensory disability. In a case study, creactive subtitles have been tested with their intended audience. As the results show, their intrinsic characteristics, i.e. dynamism, creativity and animated style, have contributed to the great reception they got not only from deaf children but also from their hearing peers. Therefore, creactive subtitles are inclusive subtitles, subtitles for all.

Audiovisual Translation (AVT) is a field where Machine Translation (MT) has long found limited success mainly due to the multimodal nature of the source and the formal requirements of the target text. Subtitling is the predominant AVT type, quickly and easily providing access to the vast amounts of audiovisual content becoming available daily. Automation in subtitling has so far focused on MT systems which translate source language subtitles, already transcribed and timed by humans. With recent developments in speech translation (ST), the time is ripe for extended automation in subtitling, with end-to-end solutions for obtaining target language subtitles directly from the source speech. In this thesis, we address the key steps for accomplishing the new paradigm of automatic subtitling: data, models and evaluation. First, we address the lack of representative data by compiling MuST-Cinema, a speech-to-subtitles corpus. Segmenter models trained on MuST-Cinema accurately split sentences into subtitles, and enable automatic data augmentation techniques. Having representative data at hand, we move to developing direct ST models for three scenarios: offline subtitling, dual subtitling, live subtitling. Lastly, we propose methods for evaluating subtitle-specific aspects, such as metrics for subtitle segmentation, a product- and process-based exploration of the effect of spotting changes in the subtitle post-editing process, and finally, a comprehensive survey on subtitlers' user experience and views on automatic subtitling. Our findings show the potential of speech technologies for extending automation in subtitling to provide multilingual access to information and communication.

Actualment, la subtitulació no professional permet a persones de tot el món accedir a material audiovisual en altres idiomes. Aquesta recerca estudia la recepció de la subtitulació professional i no professional entre estudiants universitaris amb diferents nivells d’anglès. L’estudi inclou els subtítols professionals per a DVD distribuïts a Espanya i dues versions no professionals, una espanyola i una llatinoamericana. Es va fer servir una enquesta inicial per estudiar la població i avaluar el seu nivell d’anglès. En aquesta etapa es van recol•lectar 332 respostes. La segona etapa va combinar una sessió de visionat amb rastreig ocular i una entrevista. Els participants, 26 amb nivell alt d’anglès i 26 amb nivell baix d’anglès, van veure tres segments d’una sèrie de televisió mentre es registraven els moviments dels ulls. Després de cada segment, els participants van respondre una prova de comprensió. Cada segment feia servir un dels tipus de subtítol esmentats anteriorment. Segons els resultats, el tipus de subtítols no afecta la distribució de l’atenció, però es van registrar fixacions mitjanes més curtes amb els subtítols professionals. En la prova de comprensió, els participants van obtenir resultats més alts amb els subtítols professionals i la versió no professional llatinoamericana que amb la versió no professional espanyola. Els participants van seguir els subtítols de forma diferent depenent del seu nivell d’anglès. Aquells amb un nivell baix van llegir gairebé tots els subtítols i van mostrar un comportament similar. D’altra banda, aquells amb un nivell alt d’anglès van mostrar més variació: alguns van seguir els subtítols tant com l’altre grup i uns altres gairebé no els van mirar. Tant el nivell d’anglès com la percepció de l’esforç necessari per llegir els subtítols afecten la percepció del material audiovisual. Els resultats de l’estudi mostren que, des de la perspectiva de l’audiència, la recepció de material audiovisual amb subtítols professionals i no professionals pot ser comparable. A més, el nivell de coneixements de l’idioma original del material audiovisual afecta la forma com els espectadors llegeixen els subtítols. Finalment, el comportament dels participants sembla indicar que els espectadors tenen algun grau de control sobre la lectura dels subtítols.<br>Actualmente, la subtitulación no profesional permite a personas en todo el mundo acceder a material audiovisual en otros idiomas. Se usó una encuesta inicial para estudiar a la población y evaluar su nivel de inglés. En esta etapa se recolectaron 332 respuestas. La segunda etapa combinó una sesión de visionado con rastreo ocular y una entrevista. Los participantes, 26 con nivel alto de inglés y 26 con nivel bajo de inglés, vieron tres segmentos de una serie de televisión mientras se registraban los movimientos de sus ojos. Después de cada segmento, los participantes respondieron una prueba de comprensión. Cada segmento usaba uno de los tipos de subtítulo mencionados anteriormente. De acuerdo con los resultados, el tipo de subtítulos no afecta la distribución de la atención, sin embargo se registraron fijaciones promedio más cortas con los subtítulos profesionales. En la prueba de comprensión, los participantes obtuvieron resultados más altos con los subtítulos profesionales y la versión no profesional latinoamericana que con la versión no profesional española. Los participantes leyeron los subtítulos de forma diferente dependiendo de su nivel de inglés. Aquellos con un nivel bajo leyeron casi todos los subtítulos y mostraron un comportamiento similar. Por otro lado, aquellos con un nivel alto de inglés mostraron mayor variación: algunos siguieron los subtítulos tanto como el otro grupo y otros casi no los miraron. Tanto el nivel de inglés como la percepción del esfuerzo necesario para leer los subtítulos afectan la percepción del material audiovisual. Los resultados muestran que, desde la perspectiva de la audiencia, la recepción de material audiovisual con subtítulos profesionales y no profesionales puede ser comparable. Además, el nivel de conocimientos del idioma original del material audiovisual afecta la forma como los espectadores leen los subtítulos. Finalmente, el comportamiento de los participantes parece indicar que los espectadores tienen algún grado de control sobre la lectura de los subtítulos.<br>People all over the world, especially young viewers, rely on non-professional subtitles to access audiovisual content. This research investigates the reception of professional and non-professional subtitles among university students with different levels of proficiency in English. Three versions of subtitles were included: the professional DVD subtitles distributed in Spain and two non-professional subtitles versions: one Spanish and the other Latin-American. An initial survey, which obtained 332 responses, was used to screen the population and test their level of English. For the second stage, which consisted of an eye-tracking experiment and an interview, 52 participants (26 with a low level of English and 26 with a high level of English) had their eyes tracked while they were watching three clips from a popular TV show. Each clip was shown with a different type of professional or non-professional subtitling and participants answered a comprehension questionnaire after each of them. The findings show that the type of subtitles does not affect the distribution of attention, but the professional subtitles were received with shorter mean fixation durations. The participants’ performance with the professional and the Latin-American non-professional versions were similar and gave better scores than with the Spanish non-professional version. The eye-tracking measurements show that the level of proficiency in English affects subtitle-reading behavior. The participants with low proficiency had a more standardized behavior and exhibited a high degree of reliance on the subtitles. The highly proficient participants’ behavior has more variation, with some participants depending on the subtitles as much as the other group and other participants with almost no attention to the subtitles. The level of proficiency in the source language and the participants’ perceived effort to read the subtitles were identified to have an effect on their enjoyment of the audiovisual content. The results from this study show that, from the audience’s perspective, non-professional subtitles can provide results comparable to professional subtitles. Additionally, the study shows that the proficiency in the source language affects the subtitle-reading behavior and that viewers might have some degree of individual control over subtitle reading

This thesis investigates the way in which cultural elements are rendered in subtitling by analyzing the translation of culture-specific references, such as proper names, with the case studies from three American and Thai films: Annie Hall (1977), Juno (2007), and The Iron Ladies (2000). The structure of this research is based on Toury (1995)’s Descriptive Translation Studies framework. The methodology consists of 1) situating the preliminary norms of Audiovisual Translation in Thailand, which includes the overview of foreign film import and screen translation practice; 2) proceeding to analyse the cultural transfer strategies used in the subtitles in relations to their polysemiotic co-texts and contexts and present descriptive examples; and 3) from the analysis results, comparing the ways American and Thai culture is transferred/transformed to the target audience and explaining the significance. This research aims to take interdisciplinary approach into subtitling, in hope that it will bring more insights about Audiovisual Translation not only as a language transfer, but also as a complex socio-cultural activity, surrounded by norms and many influencing factors. Therefore, the study will combine text analysis and interviews with translation practitioners in order to present subtitling in the real world situation.

Since the emergence of audiovisual translation as an academic discipline in the 1990s, research in the field has evolved in a wide range of directions. Subtitling, however, has remained a largely prescriptive form of translation, and has been typically unaffected by the various ethical and creative turns that have emerged within the wider discipline of translation studies. And, while recent years have seen an increasing preference for interdisciplinary research, this interest has rarely questioned subtitles' capacity to convey meaning within the film text. Little has therefore been done to consider the aesthetics of subtitles outside of the constraints of subtitling norms. Similarly, in spite of the influence of subtitles on an audience's cinematic experience, few works in film studies have investigated the role of translation in the distribution, marketing and reception of foreign films. This thesis therefore aims to forge a creative subtitling practice that draws upon both film and translation studies. It asks three key research questions. What can an interdisciplinary approach bring to an aesthetic form of subtitling? How might this interdisciplinary approach manifest itself in a creative subtitling practice? And how is this creative approach received by a target audience? These research questions are answered through an examination of film and translation theory and graphic design principles, with a view to establishing a methodology for a creative subtitling practice. This methodology is then tria lied through the production of creative subtitles for an award-winning Spanish film. Finally, these subtitles are tested empirically through an eye tracking study, consecutive questionnaire and focus group discussions. These studies provide qualitative and quantitative data on the processing effort required to view creative subtitles and the participants' opinions regarding their filmic experience. Together, the answers to these research questions demonstrate the creative potential of film subtitles and highlight the complexity of audience reception.

This dissertation aims at identifying the common characteristics and trends set by amateur subtitlers on YouTube. By introducing the Community Contributions feature, YouTube has invited viewers from all over the world to participate in the creative process of a video with their translations. Indeed, YouTube is characterised by a participatory culture where the viewer is at the centre of the choices made by the content creators. The subtitles created by the viewers reflect this participatory culture, as the subtitler’s presence is clearly visible. The first chapter introduces the YouTube platform and the world of YouTubers. The figure of the YouTuber shares some characteristics with celebrities, however, their most striking characteristics are authenticity and ordinariness. These are the elements that make YouTubers popular and loved by their audience. The second chapter deals with subtitling and its many forms: from professional subtitling standards to renditions of humour, to fansubbing. All these topics are crucial in the understanding of the YouTube subtitling phenomenon. The third and last chapter contains the analysis of the subtitles from seven selected videos. The analysis identifies the different characteristics and issues of the subtitles. Particular focus is given to the instances of spam and abuse, which led to the Community Contributions being discontinued on the platform.

The issue of quality is of great importance in translation studies and, although some studies have been conducted in the field of subtitling, most discussions have been limited to aspects such as how to become a good subtitler and how to produce quality subtitles. Little research has been carried out to investigate other potential factors that may influence the quality of subtitling output in practice. In recent years, some subtitling courses at postgraduate level have attempted to bridge the gap between academia and industry, not only by incorporating the teaching of linguistic and technical skills into the curriculum but also by informing students about ethics, working conditions, market competition, and other relevant professional issues. This instruction is intended to prepare them for promising careers in the subtitling industry, where a progressively deteriorating trend has been observed by some professional subtitlers. The main aim and objective of this study is to explore both theoretical and practical aspects of subtitling quality. The study aspires to call attention to the factors influencing the quality of subtitles and also to provide suggestions to improve the state of affairs within the subtitling industry in terms of quality. In order to examine the potential factors that influence the perception of subtitling quality, particularly in the professional context, two rounds of online surveys were conducted to establish the working conditions of subtitlers. Despite the fact that the participants in the first survey were based in thirty-nine different countries, the data collected is more representative of the situation in Europe, where subtitling is a relatively mature industry compared to other parts of the world. The second survey targeted subtitlers working with the Chinese language in an attempt to study the burgeoning Chinese audiovisual market. This thesis provides a systematic analysis of the numerous parameters that have an impact on the quality of subtitling, both in theory and in professional reality, and offers a detailed insight into the working environment of subtitlers. At the same time, it endeavours to draw attention to the need to ensure decent working conditions in the industry. The general findings are discussed in terms of their implications for the development of the profession as well as for subtitler training and education.

New technologies have invaded our daily lives, and as a consequence the use of computers and internet inside the classroom is progressively more frequent. At the same time, subtitling as a teaching/learning tool has become more popular. For that purpose, scholars such as Delabastita (1989), Sokoli (2006) or Talaván (2013) have been researching how the adaptation of these subtitling methods will have some influence in the learning/teaching process. Thus, the aim of this paper is to present an interlingual subtitling task in a class for English for Specific Purposes students (from a university degree of architecture), in order to improve their receptive skills (commonly known as listening and reading). Along these lines, this paper will explore the use of Task Based Learning in ESP classes and it will propose a teaching unit for further implementation in a university class of English for the degree of architecture, discussing the advantages and repercussions it may have for the acquisition and improvement of the aforementioned passive skills. Subtitling Malay movies into English in Malaysia presents particular constrictions and defies subtitlers, as the two languages have little in common and have a number of untranslatability elements. Upin and Ipin is a Malaysian television series produced by Les’ Copaque Production, which features the life of the twin brothers in a fictional Malaysian village. The series was first introduced in 2007 and can be considered as one of the most successful animated television series in Malaysia. However, the series represents significantly unique language, leading to a significant concern in subtitling. Hence, this article aims to investigate the errors utilized in the movie Upin and Ipin Pengembaraan Bermula. The research used Koponen’s (2010) error categories to classify the translation errors, by comparing the subtitles in the source and target texts. The study supports the findings of Rull et al. (2016) on omission and mistranslation as the common errors. It is hoped that this study could serve as a reference for other translation research on subtitling to and from other languages in Malaysia.
