The intensity and latitude of the subtropical ridge over eastern Australia is strongly associated with southeast Australian rainfall, particularly during the cool months of the year. We show that the subtropical ridge also exerts a strong influence on temperatures across much of Australia, with warmer daytime temperatures and more warm extremes across southern Australia when the subtropical ridge is stronger than average, which is largely independent of the relationship between the subtropical ridge and rainfall. Abstract Documentation of southwest Indian Ocean (SWIO) tropical cyclones (TCs) and extratropical transition (ET) events is sparse in the refereed literature. The authors present a climatology of SWIO TC and ET events for 1989–2013. The SWIO averages ~9 tropical cyclones (TCs) per year in this modern era. Of these TCs, ~44% undergo extratropical transition (ET), or ~four per year. Strongyloides stercoralis is an intestinal nematode that is endemic in tropical and subtropical areas (including the southeastern United States). It has a unique ability to fully replicate inside its host (autoinfection) and can cause overwhelming infections in immunocompromised patients. Chronic infection is typically asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic (diarrhea, constipation, and dermatologic manifestation) and may be associated with intermittent eosinophilia. The diagnosis of a Strongyloides infection classically is established by serial stool examinations. The recommended treatment for Strongyloides infection is ivermectin (200 mcg/kg daily, for 2 consecutive days), and repeat dosing can be considered 1 week after the initial treatment.
