Full textThis study aims to analyze the link between school climate and peer victimization in context of school achievement and perseverance in high school. After the demonstration of existing theoretical links between these three variables, this research evaluates the influence of school climate that we approach through four components (feeling of security, feeling of justice, relationship and support, collaboration and participation) on six types of school victimization (physical, verbal, psychological, physical, electronic, sexual nature). The findings of this research, that was conducted among 2,154 students from secondary one to five, show evidence that the component of the sub-climate "Feeling of security" has the greatest impact on the six studied forms of victimization; meaning that students who feel safe in their school are less likely to experience the six different forms of violence. The influence of the other school climate components on victimzation is very low. Since the experience of victimization and the perception of a negative school climate can affect the school achievement and perseverance and hinder graduation, and that the decision to drop out of secondary education is often taken during the 4th and 5th year of high school (Frase, 1989; MELS, 2009), we focus on this specific group of students in the third part of this thesis work. The analysis conducted specifically among secondary four and five students (n = 715) indicates that those who are victims of at least one of the six distinct form of violence declare a more negative perception of each school climate component compare to non-victims. Precisely, victims of physical and verbal forms perceive more negativel the four school climate components and victims of material, psychological and sexual nature forms judge also more negatively every school climate components, except for the safety climate. These results show that school climate perception influence victimization for all high school students and highlight how victimization, experienced in secondary four and five, affect more negatively their school climate perception. Some reflections are finally suggested to guide future research as well as some practical outcome for school settings.

Full textThe general objective of this thesis is to study the forms of parental and teacher involvement in the school-family-community relationship and the impact of these forms on primary school achievement.. More specifically, it consists of three objectives, which correspond to the three articles of the thesis. The first objective, discussed in the first article, is the theoretical study of the links between the forms of parental involvement (IMPP), the socio-economic status of the family (SES), and the student's academic success. This objective is achieved through a metasynthesis based on the examination of meta-analyzes, the aim here being to identify the links that research has so far established between these three variables, parental involvement (IMPP), academic achievement and socio-economic status of the family (SES), taking into account the methodological difficulties of their study. In particular, the analysis found that different definitions of IMPP, SES, and success measurement tools contribute to differences in the outcomes of studies with respect to the impact of parental involvement on student achievement. The second objective of this thesis is to study the forms of IMPP from the SES of the family, the forms of teacher involvement (IMPE) and to identify the links with the achievements of primary school children. The reference frame is that of the bio-ecological model of Bronfenbrenner (1979) and the model of the shared influence of Epstein (2009). These two models allow the study of IMPP and IMPE from the activities of parents and teachers, the roles of parents and teachers, and interpersonal relationships. To do this, a quantitative approach was adopted. The study sample consisted of 239 students and parents, and 46 teachers. The results show that the forms of the IMPP, such as school-family communication and learning at home, are favored by the parents and at the same time that they do promote success. The study also confirms that the feeling of parental competence is an important vector in motivating parents to get involved in school and at home. Moreover, the results show that parents' education influences the success and the choice of the parents to get involved with their children more than family income. On the other hand, this study explores the forms of IMPE by asking the teachers what it actually put in place to solicit parental involvement at school and at home. For example, teachers promote family-school communication and information for home learning, which the goal of enabling parents to better help children at home. However, while the findings did not clearly reveal which forms of IMPE support success, this study helped to advance knowledge about the teachers’ role and actions in soliciting parent collaboration. The third objective aims at identifying the forms of IMPP and IMPE from the discourses of parents and teachers, and the strengths and weaknesses in the relationship between the actors. To do so, a qualitative approach was favored, using a sample of 14 primary teachers and 45 parents from 7 primary schools in the national capital, Québec. The results revealed the convergence in the forms of the IMPP and the IMPE as school-family communication and home studying. Moreover, by confronting the reasons, expectations and perceptions of the actors, the results revealed that the main reason for their motivation is the student's success. Generally, parents and teachers are sensitive to the same difficulties that surround their relationship: the distance between school and family, the lack of communication, the loss of parent's confidence in the teacher, lack of time etc. The partners recognized that the climate is generally conducive to collaboration. However, the strengths and weaknesses that emerged from the actors' discourse made it possible to nuance and better understand the tensions surrounding the relationship between parents and teachers.

Full textWhen pursuing university studies, it is essentially students’ level of adaptation to the multiple university demands that will predict their perseverance, but also their academic performance and well-being (Credé & Niehorster, 2012). However, some factors can negatively contribute to this adaptation and even lead students to drop out before obtaining a diploma (Parkin & Baldwin, 2009). Evolving in a competitive school setting is one of these limiting factors (e.g., Lam, Yim, Law, & Cheung, 2004). Based on the concept of person-environment fit and on concepts of agency and communion, students enrolled in programs focused on counseling have been identified as potentially more vulnerable to the harmful effects of competition. The purpose of this dissertation is therefore to better understand the role of competition and of the fit between personal characteristics and characteristics of the school environment in the adaptation to university of students enrolled in programs focused on counseling. It was expected that students in a competitive setting and those less fitted to their environment would be less able to successfully adapt than students in a non-competitive setting and those more fitted to their environment. The study sample (N = 214) included students enrolled in academic programs focused on counseling (psychology, career guidance and development, social work and psychoeducation) and varying in competitiveness. Contrary to expectations, the results revealed that all the students in the sample adapt well to university, regardless of their program’s level of competitiveness and of person-environment fit. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed and future research directions are proposed.

Full textIn the contemporary socio-economic context, career paths are marked by transitions and career changes that often involve returning to school (Bourdon, 2010). However, while the school-to-work transition has been widely studied, the work-to-school transition is still poorly understood in the field of career development (Barclay, Stoltz, & Chung, 2011). What characterizes the relation to knowledge of adult students, that is, people going back to school in vocational education and training (VET) ? The objectives of this research are to : (1) identify what learning in VET means to adult students ; (2) determine what drives their desire to learn in VET ; (3) define the meaning they give to schooling. A qualitative methodology within the constructivist paradigm was adopted. Semi-structured individual interviews of approximately 2 hours were conducted with 20 VET students in an urban center of the province of Quebec. The interviewees were 6 women and 14 men aged between 25 and 45 years old who come from the fields of construction, agriculture, and health, and who returned to school after spending at least a year on the labor market. A thematic analysis of the verbatim transcripts was conducted according to the method proposed by L'Écuyer (1990) and highlighted by the theoretical contributions of Charlot (1999) and Beaucher (2004). The results revolve around three themes that lead to identify the relation to knowledge of adult students in VET : the meaning of learning, the desire to learn, and the meaning of schooling. Findings on teaching practices likely to favor VET student mobilization are drawn up and theoretical leads are proposed.

Full textThe present thesis focuses on children with early language delay (LD) at 18 months of age from a populationbased longitudinal study. It focuses on their co-occurring and school-age developmental difficulties according to LD persistence. First, a retrodictive approach was used to document motor development, sleep and psychosocial development in late-talkers to identify whether specific difficulties and/or their accumulation predict expressive LD persistence over and above initial language levels. Results showed that children with persistent LD accumulated developmental difficulties at 18 months of age whereas those with transient LD only had more oppositional behaviors than children with persistent LD and controls. These developmental difficulties seem to have a contribution to the development of expressive language but they do not predict LD persistence over and above the nature and the severity of early LD. The only unique predictor of persistence at 5 years of age was 18-month receptive vocabulary. Second, school-age language, academic and psychosocial outcomes of children with early LD were investigated according to LD persistence. We wanted to test empirically the hypothesis that children with transient LD had residual difficulties at school-age. Results showed that children with persistent LD accumulated language, academic and psychosocial difficulties up to Grade 6. Children with transient LD however had some psychosocial difficulties in the early school years. Thus, the hypothesis of an illusory recovery in children with transient LD was empirically supported only for psychosocial development. In sum, the results of this thesis showed that children with persistent LD have more co-occurring and schoolage developmental difficulties than those with typical language development. Difficulties were more severe or affected more developmental domains in children with persistent LD in comparison with children with transient LD. Moreover, early co-occurring developmental difficulties could help predict LD persistence at age 5. These results may suggest that children with persistent and transient LD belong to two distinct developmental trajectories underpinned by distinct developmental and etiological mechanisms. The implications of these results for the advancement of scientific knowledge and clinical practice are discussed in the conclusion.

Full textThe dualistic model of passion proposes two types of passion, harmonious and obsessive passions, who play important and distinct roles in predicting individuals’ functioning (Vallerand, 2015). This model has been applied in many contexts like leisure activities, sports, and work. However, few studies have explored the contribution of passion types for students’ academic functioning. As the number of students attending post-secondary education is increasing, including more students with mental health issues (Mackean, 2011; Ministère de l’Éducation, du Loisir et du Sport, 2014), it appears relevant to explore the role of passion types in an academic context. The purpose of this thesis was to identify distinct passion profiles of harmonious and obsessive passions toward one’s university studies and to compare students’ academic functioning (burnout, engagement, satisfaction, dropout intentions, and achievement) as a function of their passion profile. Using a person-centered approach, results of latent profile analysis demonstrated the presence of four passion profiles, labelled High (high levels of harmonious and obsessive passions), Moderate (moderate levels of harmonious and obsessive passions), Low (low levels of harmonious and obsessive passions), and Optimal (high level of harmonious passion and low level of obsessive passion) in a sample of university students. Overall, highly passionate students (High and Optimal profiles) reported the best indices of academic functioning. In addition, students in the Optimal profile showed the lowest levels of academic burnout (except for the dimension of inefficacy) and students in the High profile reported the highest levels of academic engagement. In contrast, students in the Low profile evidenced the worst levels of academic functioning. This study demonstrated that both types of passion coexist within students and that the benefits of having a harmonious passion can protect against the negative consequences of obsessive passion.

Full textDropping out of school can seriously affect employment possibilities and social integration. There are tools to investigate and measure the level of risk of dropping out. Academic performances and behaviour problems are well documented risk factors. Impulsivity and risk taking can lead to problematic behaviour. Certain studies have looked into the impact of stress on the dropping out process, but its impact on academic performances, impulsivity and risk taking has never been evaluated directly with the risk level of dropping out. Objective and hypothesis : The objective of this study is to evaluate the impact of stress on academic performances, impulsivity and risk taking and to measure the relation of this impact with the risk level of dropping out of school. The hypothesis is that higher the risk level, higher the negative impact stress will have on our measures of academic performance, impulsivity and risk taking. Method : 37 young adults between 15 and 20 years old with no diploma took part in the study. After measuring the risk level of dropping out, a full characterization was made followed by academic performance, impulsivity and risk taking tasks before and after a social stress condition, the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST). Results : Our salivary cortisol samples show that the TSST did not produce a significant change in levels of stress to adequately test our hypothesis. Our results show a significant interaction between impulsivity and the risk level of dropping out. Furthermore, the relation between risk taking and impulsivity in our results is interesting Conclusion : The objective of this project could not be adequately tested since the stress condition didn't produce a significant stress reaction, as measured by salivary cortisol. The level of risk of dropping out was significantly correlated with impulsivity, but not risk taking, nor academic performances.

Full textSchool architecture in Quebec is a soaring field: several recent researches and large governmental budgets can confirm it. Unfortunately, the major philosophical reflection needed about space and education still remain to be constituted. This, considering its possible societal, cultural, social and ethical impacts. My purpose is to document the subject in a philosophical way, with the intention of precising which elements have to be considered in order to think about school architecture. To do so, I analyze some governmental rules such as professional competencies, teachers’ obligations and school missions. To structure this huge subject, still “skeletal”, I chose to organize my work with four levels of space (and another type of space). The first level, designed space, has a hermeneutical function: school space must include significant elements and be designed “logogenically”. This level of space also includes ethical obligations: environmental concerns engage us to create sustainable spaces, which are built with a situated architecture, protecting sites and ecumene. Vernacular architecture, which involves dwellers in the creation process, allows a knotworking collaboration that is essential between the architect and all the actors (teachers, students, families, community, etc.). This close relation leads to consider the architect as a pedagogue, and to give him some responsibilities related to the targeted professional competencies (cultural and ethical). The second level, represented space, is about construction of a topogenesis, which uses body, but also an occidental representation of space sadly generalized. This phenomenon requires decentration to “apprehend” school space, liberating it with language and game. With this, I dare to propose a sort of “pedagogical nomadism”, that is to say more informal and dynamic practices. The third level, lived space, uses the bergsonian distinction that opposes the mathematical vision of space to that of a place. I can then consider the qualitative aspect of school as a place, respecting the seven teachers’ obligations and the three missions of Quebec schools. This place, neither completely private, nor completely public, can be seen as a space of socialization. The fourth level, dwelling, is about fundamentally ontological human determinations. This highest level of space is possible using intuition, which creates an immediate relation to space. The esthetical aspect, inspired by Hölderlin, who considers that “man dwells poetically”, leads me to propose school as an artwork, by transposing the four qualities of the musical work, namely beauty, sustainability, teaching and sincerity. The last type of space (vicarial space or nonplace) completes the four precedent levels. It is a partially transversal space, which causes deterritorialization of school. This means that specificities of physical school space, such as critical dimension (which cannot be accomplished by virtual space), have to be recognized.

Full textToday's teaching practices are often held in space settings defined by past generations. Teaching-learning situations in high schools, often take place in institutions formerly known as comprehensive schools built during the 1960s/'70s. This M.A. thesis is linked to the Schola.ca project which studies the characteristics of Quebec's elementary and high schools, in order to provide tools for their renovation and optimization. In this context, our research studies the school spaces in high schools, as well as teacher's practices within them. Numerous official documents, architectural plans and journals were analyzed, in order to understand how socio-economic, political, architectural and mainly educational factors have influenced the design and definition of these schools. Moreover, a discussion with two teachers from a high school in the City of Quebec area has allowed a better understanding of how teachers adapt the scholastic spaces to fit their needs. Thanks to the various theoretical tools developed by space sociologists and sociologists of education, we were able to better understand the links between the design of school spaces following the Parent Report (comprehensive schools) and the current use of these same spaces by teachers. Focusing on space practices through a case study in a high school located in the City of Quebec area, our research aims to inform the Schola.ca project on how teachers take over space or adapt it to their needs.

Full textThe popularity of selective special school projects prejudices equality of opportunity in Quebecer secondary schools. This study focuses on a non-selective special school project that offers both homework supervision and guidance for all and the possibility of participating in extracurricular activities for every pupil who wishes to do so. The study aims to describe the difference in pupils’ perception of the efficiency of the project on homework guidance and supervision according to their characteristics (gender, secondary cycle and type of education) and their work habits (time spent daily on homework and where homework are done). This study uses secondary data from a previous collaborative study which had shown students to have a positive perception of the project’s efficiency (Larouche, Amboulé-Abath et Savard, 2016a). Data interrogated stems from a questionnaire answered by 596 secondary school pupils from special needs education and regular classes. Results show many differences in pupils’ perception of the efficiency of the project according mainly on their work habits, but also on gender, secondary cycle, and type of education. Pupils who have a most positive perception of the efficiency of the project are those who do their homework both at home and at school and those who spend at least 30 minutes daily on their homework. Data also show that girls have a more positive perception of the efficiency of the project than boys. The latter tend to perceive more the disadvantages of the project. Pupils form cycle one (junior) and those from cycle two (senior) have a different perception of the project’s efficiency. Pupils enrolled in special needs classes have a more negative perception of the efficiency of the project than their peers.

Many school counsellors work with a youth population that makes varied and frequent use of the internet and social media (Thoër & Millerand, 2017; CEFRIO, 2017). Although web sites and Facebook available in schools offer young people a digital environment with possibilities for educational and career development (ECD), their utilization is not yet widely documented. Our research interest is the use of digital resources for ECD in the school environment. The role of ECD in the Quebec school system’s program of education (OCCOQ, 2013; MELS, 2007) as well as the influence of community interactions on young people’s plans for their future (Law, 1981) serve as terms of reference for understanding their use. The main objective of this qualitative research is to explore the use of web sites and Facebook for ECD in secondary schools in a Quebec French school board. Thirteen web sites (547 web elements) and thirteen Facebook sites (1531 publications) from one school board were the subject of a rigorous documentary analysis. The results of this research indicate that ECD is rare on websites and Facebook sites, that it underutilizes the potential of the sites, that it is directed mainly towards an adult population and that it has very little visibility. The analysis provides three main findings: ECD would benefit from occupying the digital environment available to young people, training should be available to accompany guidance professionals in their use of digital media and school counsellors should adopt a positive posture towards these methods and towards the digital environment.

Full textClimate change represents what science says and what politics is increasingly taking into account (Ouranos, 2015). The purpose of this thesis aims to document the implementation of the two last action plans against global warming, prepared by the Governement of Québec, namely Le Québec et les changements climatiques : un défi pour l’avenir. Plan d’action 2006-2012, and Le Québec en action. Vert 2020. Plan d’action 2013-2020 sur les changements climatiques. At the junction between the analysis of public action (Matland, 1995 ; Kübler et Maillard, 2009) and the theoretical framework of the ecological modernization and its tradition of the public policies sociology (Béal, 2016), this thesis tries to answer two questions : how is the implementation carried out and why are there successes and difficulties to this adoption? Québec gets its foot in a low-carbon society, through the wind and hydroelectric energy tandem. However, fighting against climate change represents a major challenge, which Québec has accepted with an ambitious target. The PACC 2006-2012 got some basis implemented, but there remains a lot to do and outcomes remain unknown : will the PACC 2013-2020 achieve its greenhouse gas emissions reduction target of 20 % below the line of 1990 (Gouvernement du Québec, 2012a, p. I) ? At march 31, 2016, one notes the under-implementation of the PACC 2013-2020, since 22 % only of the planned budget had already been spent (MDDELCC, 2017a, p. 46). Greenhouse gas emissions reduction and climate change adaptation are lagging behind projections. The thesis fits into the theoretical framework of the ecological modernization (Huber, 1982 ; Spaargaren et Mol, 1992 ; Hajer, 1995 ; Jänicke, 1995 ; Mol, 2003 ; Christoff, 2009 ; Spaargaren et al., 2009 ; Toke, 2011), which many people present as the sociological version of the sustainable development project, focused on state and industrial actors, then the civil society (Buttel, 2003). Moreover, source of analytical and comprehensive wealth, which escapes from quantitative studies, the preferred method is semi-directive interviews (Fortin, 2013) with the supervisors of the two PACC, public authorities for the greater part, as well as content analysis (Leray, 2008) for data treatment. But the obvious limitations of the indicators and the qualitative method involve a partial validation of the hypotheses. Otherwise, the ecological modernization thesis takes place in a long-term perspective and requires time for an empirical testing (Guay, 2018)...

Full textThe consequences of indirect violence on school students have recently become top stories in the media. It is becoming obvious that this kind of violence may not be as mild as it was first considered and that it plays an important role in school success. This study reveals the impact of indirect victimization has on a students’ perception of their school climate. Questionnaires were administered to a sample of 2290 students ranging from secondary one to five from seven different high schools in rural and semi-rural zones. The sample was part of a national study meant to give a portrait of school violence in the Province of Quebec. Regression analysis stated that indirect victimization on students have a negative impact on their perception of different aspects of their school climate. A greater impact was noticed on the population of victimized students than on the general population of students. The results showed a greater negative impact on the secondary one, four and five boys and on the secondary two and three girls, but when considering the total population; no distinction was noted between the two genders. This research brings up numerous questions on the bidirectional relationship between the perception of a school’s climate and indirect victimization as well as the impact of other variables like personal traits, institutional discrimination, belonging and gender perception in this whole dynamic. Full textSchool mediation is one of the devices created to meet - well or not - the current trend in the denunciation of "school violence" phenomenon that expresses itself a facet of the crisis of our social control systems. Kind of miracle solution to over-visibility of daily tensions identifiable educational, school mediation raises many questions, traditionally reduced to those of the reconciliation of regulatory function of mediation with the status of child or young person in school, or to more simple, the benefits that may arise from the practice of mediation in relation to the educational relationship. An exploratory qualitative research, begun in 2013, to investigate the question of the uniqueness of such devices against practical constraints posed by the response of having to "violence" now imposed on schools. To do this, semi-structured interviews were conducted in ten primary schools in Quebec, schools benefiting yet previously, a culture conducive to management and ownership of such mediation programs. Focused on the directions taken by the various actors engaged in implementing mediation projects in their respective communities, the results of this research will open the discussion on the concepts of culture (by extension, of cons-culture) and empowerment specific to these areas, and will discuss the limitations that arise in this regard to social workers and professionals in the academic world. Keywords : Mediation, implantation, culture, adherence, empowerment.
This thesis focuses on issues regarding educational justice in Canadian higher education institutions. We are specifically interested in the low education rates of indigenous university students. We adopted an intersectional perspective and chose to exclusively work with indigenous women pursuing higher education at the university level. The analysis of the school career of indigenous women is particularly enlightening to better understand the justice −or injustice− of Canadian educational systems because of the complexity of the multiple forms of oppression they face. The social justice theory of Amartya Sen, founded on the capability approach, and the main concepts to which it relates, shape the basis of this study’s theoretical and conceptual framework. This theory focuses on the individuals’ choices of being and doing. The main objective of this thesis is to assess the influence of the context of studies on the possibilities of indigenous women to achieve the school career they want. Based on a multicase study, we investigated two universities in the province of Quebec (Canada). One of the universities offers very limited support to indigenous students, while the other has numerous measures, policies and services directed towards indigenous students. In each university, we conducted a three-staged data collection process: a) an educational policy analysis (national, provincial and of local policies); b) semi-structured interviews with staff members (faculty and administrative staff) on their professional experience with indigenous students; and c) life story interviews with indigenous women about their school careers. Our multidimensional analysis process looked at different social levels. At the macrosocial level, we conducted a literature review of the respondents' contexts of study. At the mesosocial level, we conducted a thematic analysis of the data gathered from interviews with university staff. At the microsocial level, we made a thematic analysis of the students' school careers. To conclude the analysis, we did a cross-sectional analysis of these three levels of data, which allowed us to meet our research objective. This thesis provides several interesting conclusions. Our results identify the effects of international, national, provincial and local initiatives on the deployment of our participants’ educational possibilities. For example, the international measures addressing indigenous education...

Full textThe focus of this doctoral thesis is on Inuit customary adoption in Nunavik. The main objective is to study the association between customary adoption practices and child behavioral problems at school-age. In Nunavik, one-third of Inuit children are adopted according to customary adoption practices. The first article describe the cultural context and the main characteristics of Inuit customary adoption. Taking place at birth, customary adoption is considered as the donation of a child to a close kin, usually the parent’s sibling or the child’s grandparent. Contrary to closed adoptions which is in standard legal use in southern Canada and in the USA, customary adoption is not confidential and biological ties are not severed. The actual information on the development of Inuit adopted children come from a limited body of studies on Inuit children followed by youth protection services. Using data from a prospective longitudinal study conducted in Nunavik, this thesis included a sample of 46 adopted and 231 non-adopted children followed from birth to school age. Prenatal and familial informations were collected and behavioral problems were assessed using the Teacher Report Form of the Child Behavior Checklist. The second article compare adopted and non-adopted children on prenatal and familial characteristics and examine the actual extent of the increase in the number of behavior problems seen in Inuit children adopted in accordance with Inuit customs. Adoption per se is not associated with higher rate of behavioral problems at school age but adopted and non-adopted Inuit children were raised in significantly distinct family environments at school-age. Given such differences, the last article identified the prenatal and familial risk factors associated with attention problems and externalizing behaviors in a subsample of Inuit adopted children (n=46). Attention and externalizing behaviors were better explained by familial variables at school age than by prenatal variables. These results contrast significantly with previous domestic and international adoption studies conducted with non-indigenous children. Similarities and differences are discuss in this thesis and hypotheses to explain discrepancies are drawn. This study contribute to extend the scope of knowledge on Inuit customary adoption.

Full textThis thesis focuses on individuals from well-educated families who have experienced uncertain pathways or downward mobility in Quebec's postsecondary educational system. These individuals, who have interrupted their studies before graduation or who didn't obtain a university diploma, seem to deviate from formal schooling norms or from the established family educational trajectory. Are these situations flaws in the social reproduction system or indications of the increasing individualization of educational pathways? To answer this question, we proposed three avenues of interpretation: 1) the influence of Quebec's socio-educational context on the individualization of school pathways; 2) the transmission of the family cultural heritage and its effects on educational uncertainty and choices; 3) the dynamic influence of academic and non-academic experiences on the interruption of schooling or the abandonment of university aspirations. The analysis of twenty-one retrospective interviews led to the creation of two analytical classifications. The first one describes objectively the morphologies of the pathways and reveals their strong heterogeneity. The second one exposes the action rationale found in the interviewees' life story. While it highlights a certain influence of the family on the pathways, it stresses the fact that academic and non-academic experiences are paramount. Finally, these educational careers can be understood as reflecting the recent educational and social mobility of Quebec's francophone population and an increasing individualization of the educational pathways

Full textIn the province of Quebec, classroom teachers and specialist music teachers in primary schools have the same obligations in regards to the mainstreaming of special needs students. To date, no study in the province of Quebec has examined the music education of special needs students in the context of the regular classroom. A literature review of English studies in the field of music education has documented the problems resulting from this phenomenon. Therefore, it appears important to explore the lived experience of specialist music teachers in primary schools in connection with the mainstreaming of special needs students in the regular classroom in the context of the Quebec school system. The objectives of the present research are: 1) to describe in depth the lived experience of specialist music teachers in primary schools in connection with the mainstreaming of special needs students in the regular music classroom; 2) to describe how the main factors known to facilitate mainstreaming manifest themselves in the teachers’ lived experience. In order to explore these objectives, a phenomenological research design grounded in the interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) approach of Smith, Flowers & Larkin (2009) was chosen. Three in-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted and an interpretative phenomenological analysis of the data was carried out. Eight experiential dimensions common to the lived experience of the three participants resulted from the data analysis. Finally, a gap seems to exist between the main factors known to facilitate mainstreaming in the Quebec literature and participants’ lived experience.
