Abstract:
Montaigne had a significant and preponderant influence on la rochefoucauld. Even though through other writings he had improved his knowledge of montaigne's work, there is, in the classic moralist's work, a source which is directly derived from the "essais". But particularly in the omitted or not published maxims, we can recognize montaigne's decisive influence. In fact, montaigne's presence in la rochefoucauld's work is permanent and essential. La rochefoucauld appropriated montaigne's favourite rethoric methods, the very style of montaigne. La rochefoucauld's talent was to bring that style to a successfull conclusion ; the specific style of the "maximes" is his own personal property

Abstract:

Abstract:
Succession in unlisted family owned businesses is a crucial stage for both enterprise and family. It compromises the prennial business and could bring about the down fall of the family heritage. Success of the process will ensure the continuity of the family line, the survival and thedevelopment of the said business resulting in stabilityfor the employees and growth and value for the firm. Succession in family owned business was firts discussed by Christensen in 1953. Since then, many theories have been developed about this subject but none have taken into consideration either the gender of the successor or the culture of the Lebanese society. Therefore, this exploratory research highlights the impact of these two factors in succession planning and the choise of daughter successor and her socialization. Consequently, both managemnt and corporate governance are subject to be affected in the post-succession period

Caen, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014CAEN0508.

Abstract:
By focusing on one specific way of the transmission of the personal network within the family enterprise, which managed to transfer the enterprise to at least one member of the next generation, that means to reflect on an emerge phenomenon which researchers on. SME and Entrepreneurship have shown, till this time, little interest. Therefore, o objective is to focus on a potential transmission of the Tunisian family enterprise to its daughter-successor. Within the regard, this PhD thesis aims at providing a good understanding of the transmission of the personal network from the predecessor to the daughter-successor in addition to finding out the funding resources, the favouring factors as well as the obstacles hampering this transmission. As a response to the central question of this thesis, we opted for a multi-site qualitative research by adopting interpretative paradigm. Besides, we have also chosen to conduct interviews as a qualitative approach of data collection. Therefore, the research was carried out by analysing seven case studies of Tunisian family enterprises transmitted fro predecessors to daughter-successors. Concerning the data collection, it was carried out through semi-direction) conversations, while the analysis of content was done by using the software NVivo010. The investigation has shown that despite the importance of the transmission of the personal network from the predecessors to the daughter-successors as well as the importance of the resources gained thanks to these relationship and the profitable resources provided for the successors and the family company as whole, Sociocultural constraints mi exclude the girls from this network. Nevertheless, the analysed qualitative data do emphasize the reasons behind the choice of the Tunisian daughter successor as the core of the investigation. Besides, the predecessors have pointed out that rarely has the gender of tl successor been at stake during the transmission and this reflects the remarkable social status of Tunisian women. Lastly we have realized that there are other reasons which have allowed the Tunisian women to take part in the family enterprise such as the commitment in the enterprise, the close relationships with the predecessor, the skilfulness and the character

A review of the literature relating to family firms reveals a lack of research addressing successor commitment and what happens “after” succession. In this study, I further investigate this phase of retirement and commitment in the parent/child relation and the role of the predecessor. My research reveals the important role played by the predecessor in the continuity of the family firm and how it impacts the successor’s attitude. I propose four successor attitudes following their integration into the family firm. We have identified four categories of attitude: “gradual independence”, “unfettered independence”, “imposed continuity” and “agreed continuity”. This research also highlights the factors which can block or facilitate the course of successor commitment in French family firms

Abstract:
During the last years in Latin American there have been researches that identifythe family business inside their scope of study, contributing some data thatconfirm their important presence and role in the economy of several countries(Poza E. (1995); (Khulman, 1996) (Kajihara, 1998); (Davis J. A., 2006).Dominican Republic is not the exception, as explained by Van der Linde & Bello(2001); in the country exists a solid family business network in its first andsecond generations, with some big companies on their third, statement thatproduces evidence to develop an interest and need to prevent the mortality ofsuch companies. The practice that is modeled in the family business to achieve their intergenerationalsurvival is succession, understood as a process that culminates withthe decision making of a new successor leader who will have the company underhis/her command (Chua, Chrisman, & Sharma, 1999); (Chrisman, Chua, &Sharma, 2003).What we usually call “decision making” is a process that is applied to everydaysituations in the management of organizations, which turns complex andintricate in the context of family business. Thereon Basly S., (2005) made acomparison between family and non-family businesses proposing a logic ofdecision making different in each one, and highlighting the dominant dimension, process, speed and assumptions in which the decision is sustained. This studysuggests that family businesses are not governed by the normative model of decision making, assertion that gave us a clue to step into the subject ofrationality and decision making in the family business.Citing Simon (1955) the purpose of all constructions of an approximaterationality is to give materials for the development of a theory of the behavior ofdecision making individuals in the context of an organization. Nonetheless andopposite, we have the paradox that if we assume the type of overall rationality ofthe classical theory, the problems of the inner structure of the company, orwhatever organization it is, disappear almost completely

Abstract:
The job of CEO is rich and complex and the "number one" change, poorly understood, may have an impact on the socio-economic performance, strategy, policy and the organization of the company. Facilitate the arrival of new manager is an important issue for the survival and development of the organization, as well as its organizational socialization remains little studied. The first part explains the conceptual and methodological research, and presents lots of experiments of our assumptions and our tools. We use interviews with executives to define the business leadership and highlight the specifics CEO’s roles and skills. The specific relationship between the leader and its Governance is also studied. Its specific needs of organizational socialization are then demonstrated, particularly in relation to a buyer company and a "classic" employee. In the second part, the concept of organizational socialization is suitable for demanding and unique leader, through the concept of CEO’s Organizational Socialization. This model meets the needs of leader’s socialization, especially during integration, organizational socialization’s milestone. It consists of three types of recoveries: politico-strategic, organizational and managerial. The quality of these recoveries led to the quality of leader’s integration, reclassified strategic integration because of its strategic challenges. An analytical framework is proposed to allow both the new leader to better understand the organization that will lead, but also its own needs through organizational socialization variables and factors that compose it

Abstract:
In Mexico, the survival and the development of family small and medium-size firms are indispensable for the economy of the country. However, the mortality rate of these companies is extremely high after the succession of the founder. The change of management from the founder to his successor inevitably affects management practices and may destabilize the working dynamics between the director and the managers. This drives me to formulate the following question: to what degree can the change between from the founders' management style to the successors´ management style affect the development of a family small and medium-size firm in Mexico? To answer this question, I took interest in the hierarchical relationship between the manager and his direct subordinates. To measure this relationship, I used the notion of management distance which can be divided in two dimensions: the direction by the sense and the delegation. This research, of exploratory nature, uses quantitative and qualitative methods. It compares the management distance that exists in first generation family small and medium-size firms with the one which prevails in second generation family small and medium-size firms. This thesis makes two contributions. On one hand our results validate the strong difference between the management style of the founder and that of the successor. I propose a justification of this difference and an instrument to measure its impact on the hierarchical relationship between the director and the managers in the family small and medium-size firms considered in this study. On the other hand, I adapted, and validated statistically a conceptual framework and various methods to be able to measure and to analyze the quality of the relationships among management in the Mexican family small and medium-size firms

Abstract:
The story of the Corsican military of the Renaissance period at the end of the old regime, the Corsican island was the last acquisition, giving an insight into the long path leading to this conclusion. The Corsican society of warrior vocation finds its exalting cry in modern times. The military emigration became a privileged choice in the Italy of princes and popes. Thanks to wars, these mercenaries entered the service of the Valois, establishing an ephemeral domination on the island. Born of this failure, the Ornano regiment continued the French Corsican service from 1569 to 1626. However the war needs alone under Louis XIV justified the recruitement of Corsican regiment. In the XVIIIth. century, the combination of the island revolution with French ambitions led Louis XV to create a regiment which would be maintained after 1769. This opportunity offered the Corsican upper class a noble title and at the same times a refuge against Genoan persecutions. The Island governor elected by Gênes would be find solid support. This allegiance, broke the Italian umbilical cord, and offered Corsica a foothold in the threefold state order, to become progressively obsolete

Abstract:
A team of graduate students from Brigham Young University under the supervision of the main author, Dr. Henrichsen, collaborated on creating a book as well as a website, Basic Training and Resources for Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (BTR-TESOL). The entire project consists of ten main sections with nearly fifty units addressing topics that novice teachers should know before teaching English to non-native speakers. The BTR-TESOL project answers the need for material for untrained novice teachers that will help them to be better prepared in a very minimalistic way to face the challenges and responsibilities that teaching of English as a second language (ESL) brings. This master's project describes the creation of two units of section three, "Fundamental Teaching Skills", titled "Developing a Successful Teaching Personality" and "Managing Classes of English Language Learners." The first unit, "Developing a Successful Teaching Personality", educates novice teachers about the importance of nine major characteristics of a good teaching personality that were compiled by the author of this unit after extensive research of teachers' and students' attitudes. Moreover, the unit explains how each characteristic contributes to the overall challenge of being a successful teacher. In the second unit, "Managing Classes of English Language Learners", novice teachers are introduced to basic classroom management issues, possible reasons behind students' behavior, and tips on how to solve common classroom management issues. Both units include a short introduction to the content, an opening scenario, a video segment related to the theme of each unit as well as reflection questions, objectives, explanatory text, and a section that directs readers to places they can go to learn more about the subject.

Abstract:
Mini-research report presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Business Administration at the University of Stellenbosch.
Thesis (MBA (Business Management))--University of Stellenbosch, 2007.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This report is a literature study that focuses on the characteristics of successful project teams in the research and development environment. Successful project teams are becoming an increasingly important factor in business. However, traditional quantitative project management tools no longer give project teams a competitive edge - additional qualitative tools are required, following a systems approach. A number of characteristics of project teams, with the focus on the qualitative issues, particularly the people issues, are investigated. A project team operates in the context of its environment, mostly an organisation with a structure and an organisational culture. Methods and concepts in selecting and managing a dynamic project team within a turbulent and fast changing environment are discussed. The topics covered are: environmental fit, visions and goals, leadership and team roles, systems and procedures, values, organisational culture, rewards and recognition methods, and training and development. This literature study aims to encourage a paradigm shift away form the traditional triangle of budget, brief and time towards a stronger focus on people issues as people are the most important assets of a project team. As people do not behave in a linear way, as required for quantitative tools, new methods and tools are required. The hypothesis that was subsequently formulated from this study states that research and development teams can be more successful if they are regarded as a non-linear system consisting of various inputs, processes and outputs.

Abstract:
High project failure rates result in billions of wasted dollars each year. Project failure does not discriminate by type of project or the industry from which they originate. The purpose of this qualitative single case study was to explore strategies that leaders at a health care organization located in Pennsylvania use to manage projects successfully. This population was selected due to the health care organization's reputation for successful project completion. The conceptual framework for this study was Fiedler's contingency theory. Data were collected by conducting semistructured interviews with 9 project leaders and reviewing project documents provided by study participants. Interviews were transcribed, thick descriptions were obtained, and participants were engaged in member checking. The thematic data analysis process consisted of compiling and coding data, identifying patterns, and organizing themes into relevant categories, iteratively. Findings were organized into 4 thematic categories, which were, essential strategies, relationship management, best practices, and self-attunement. Findings from this study may contribute to positive social change if health care leaders can use the information to enhance their project leadership capabilities. When project managers are successful, the benefits cascade to health care organizations. Leaders of those health care organizations can ensure that important health and wellness services are provided and available to those who need them, fund performance improvement initiatives, resource quality programs, and offer innovative services to improve health outcomes for individuals and communities.

Full text
Abstract:
In France, getting old as an immigrant became a condition shared by a growing number of people. In 2015, about 1.5million of immigrants are 60years old or more. In France, the constant increase in the number of elderly immigrants represents a social and political issue, a fact confirmed by the recent works of the national assembly as well as by the development of scientific research. Nonetheless, the diversity of studies dealing with different territories inhabited by elderly immigrants remains limited. Consequently, this thesis (structured around several scientific articles) aims at proposing a representation of the “migrating elderly”, articulating a territorial and gerontological approach. Two different territories were taken into consideration: Angers andCholet (Maine-et-Loire), and Montreuil (Seine-Saint-Denis).This selection provided the opportunity to analyse the aging conditions of migrating population which evolve according to different spatial contexts. In this study, we considered territorial data, medico-social accounts, as well as the work of associations and political interventions to elderly immigrants. In addition, biographical facts and stories from as ample of elderly migrants in Maine-et-Loire were analysed to highlight the political and social issues that structure the aging conditions of immigrants. The result of this work proves that it is still essentia lto take into account the heterogeneity of these populations. It also underlines the importance of understanding their needs in terms of their own life journeys (and the end of it) which is inextricable of the territory they occupy

A global CEO study conducted by IBM in 2006 showed that business model innovation has a higher correlation with operating margin growth than any other type of innovation. It is therefore not surprising that business model innovation is a buzzword increasingly seen in business jargon and literature. However, the field is quite novel and finding ways of approaching and understanding the subject has been more elusive. This thesis presents a comprehensive and academically founded approach to business model innovation, including a framework that can be applied by managers to transform their business, and building capabilities that can become a source of competitive advantage.

Woodville, Katherine Elizabeth. "Susanna Centlivre: Successful chameleon." Thesis, Wichita State University, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10057/3710.

Full text
Abstract:
Susanna Centlivre, active in the post Restoration Theater, wrote nineteen plays from 1700 to 1723. A few of her plays were popular until 1900, but thereafter fell into limbo. By studying three of her plays, The Perjur’d Husband, The Busy Body, and The Wonder, A Woman Keeps a Secret, one can decide whether she can receive the classification of a protofeminist. This topic is important in helping to trace the evolution of women’s writing, and their movement toward the development in the novel. One must understand the issues involved for women writers as they struggled for recognition in the field of literature. Centlivre’s history prior to 1700 remains shadowy. Her early life is oft repeated with little or no substantiation of the facts. The study of situations and characters in her plays reveal attitudes of the interactions between men and women. The ideas about forced marriages and paternal attitudes toward children reveal themselves through both comedy and sorrow. Though Centlivre married three times no children came from those marriages; the plays she wrote reflected the manners of those times. Assigning the arbitrary label of protofeminist or feminist to Centlivre at this time might place her into a genre from which she could not escape. She should receive the same treatment as any male writer: a fair and balanced approach to her words based on equality between the sexes.

This thesis discusses environmental partnerships, in which an NGO and corporation collaborate to address mutual goals. I begin by discussing the goals of environmental partnerships before reviewing a brief history of these partnerships, the current state of the partnerships landscape, and partnership trends across industries and within NGOs. Next, I examine the potential benefits and drawbacks to partnering for both public and private participants. Finally, strategies for corporations, NGOs, research institutes, academia, and government to enable the creation and maintenance of successful partnerships are proposed to address critical environmental issues in the absence of effective regulation.

Abstract:
Most humans aspire to live long, healthy lives. It has been assumed that one's length and quality of life were primarily determined by genetics; it is now believed that aging is influenced more by factors within an individual's control. This study sought to identify the factors consistently related to successful aging. Relationships between various participant demographic variables were examined in relation to a) a general quality of life index, b) a geriatric-specific quality of life index tailored to include items believed to more closely associate with successful aging, and c) participants' subjective ratings of aging "success". English-speaking individuals over the age of 60 were recruited as participants from community centers and senior housing communities. The hypothesis that the correlation between the QLI-G40 total score and the subjective rating of aging success ( r = .59) would be more strongly positive than the correlation between the QLI-GEN-III total score and the subjective rating of aging success ( r = .55), was not supported. A Fisher's r -to- z transformation, which resulted in a Fisher's z -score of .36 ( p = .719), showed that the difference between these two independent Pearson's correlations was not statistically significant. It was also found that the "Control" domain of the geriatric-specific QLI (items related to health, health-limitation perception and autonomy/independence) was most strongly correlated with subjective ratings of aging success. Future researchers should administer multiple questionnaires over several sessions to establish concurrent validity with existing measures in the continued development of a geriatric-specific QLI. Future research should continue to emphasize the use of subjective assessments, as there is a great deal of behavioral variation among those aging well into late life.

Abstract:
The purpose of this master thesis project is to explore the different possibilities available today forEpiroc Rock Drills Tools AB to digitally identify their products, with primary focus on Down-The-Holedrill bits for blast drilling. This report provides a thorough investigation on currently availabletechnologies that could be applied for digital product identification, a benchmark study of thestrategies applied by other companies and in other business areas with similar goals and relatableconditions. Also, a review and survey on key performance indicators which could be connected to theproduct identification process to join data information to increase the potential value for both thecustomers and the company. Moreover, this project explores the challenges with implementation ofsuch procedures.Based on theoretical research, the benchmarking study, practical learnings from an experimental testas well as practical understanding and expertise from colleagues and suppliers, the following fourapproaches have been identified as having the best feasibility for actual implementation, presentedin priority order from highest to lowest implementation possibility considering all factors:1) Inserted tags into drill bits2) Re-attachable tags3) Printed data matrix labels4) Surface inscriptionA survey was conducted towards business line managers to identify customers current situation andfuture needs. The responses revealed interest and motivation for this project.A field test revealed that Xerafy Dot-iN XS tags placed in a top position of the bits had the bestsurvivability and chance for further developments of inserted tags into drill bits. For future work the goal should be to find which approach that can best be implemented to theentire product range. The best option for one product type might not be applicable for other producttypes, therefore a combination of the presented approaches might be considerable to fit allproducts.

Abstract:
The implementation of a new IT system in an organization provides many opportunities but as well as serious challenges.  Opportunities may arise in the form of increased control and efficiency in the organization, while a common challenge may be that the organization does not perceive value in the investment because management has failed to integrate IT with the rest of the organization. It is only when the organization manages the organizational factors during and after IT implementation that the benefits may be realized. This thesis examines organizational factors involved during the implementation of IT systems and identifies critical factors that are plausibly responsible for the success of the implementation. The design of the study was a comparative case approach that simultaneously examined two IT system implementations (named Heroma and Agresso) in the same organization, one of them being perceived to be more successful than the other.  In the theoretical framework, discussion addressed the issue of how to measure a successful implementation. Based on the literature  review  and  the empirical  data,  the  author  was  able  to  identify  the  critical organizational factors that were most responsible for the level of success of each IT implementation. The   results   showed   that   the   Heroma   implementation   lacked   in managing critical organizational factors, leading to a less satisfactory outcome. For example, the exclusion of employees  from  the  implementation  process  and  the  lack  of competency  of  the  project manager  made the Heroma  implementation  more troublesome  then the Agresso implementation.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This report looks at what is important for Matrix Management to be successful in an organisation. After evaluating sixteen articles it was found that eleven elements are critical when implementing Matrix Management. These elements are: • Communication • Strong Leader • Culture • Rewards • Skills in Teams • Clear and Defined Goals • Senior Management Support • Defined Responsibility • Accountability • Procedures and Standards The model that was developed aims to indicate that there are certain fundamentals that an organisation needs to have in place before starting to work in a cross functional manner. These fundamentals are: to understand the goals of the organisation and the team, to develop procedures and standards (these should be communicated on a continuous basis), to define the responsibilities within the organisation and team, and to develop communication channels for internal and external communication. Next the model examines culture, where it differentiates between organisational culture and team culture. Organisation Culture includes innovation, respect for each other, rewarding and accountability. Team culture looks at commitment, cooperation and accountabilities. Then the model examines the three role players namely the senior management and their support, strong team leadership and the team members that are empowered and correctly skilled. All of these are interlinked through communication. It appears that little has changed over the past twenty years with regards to the fundamentals necessary to be successful. It is only the people and the organisations themselves that have changed.

Aubrey, Richard H. "Moral Purposes of Successful Teachers." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 1998. https://dc.etsu.edu/etd/2879.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to describe the moral purposes of successful teachers. Moral purpose was defined as the values and beliefs associated with serving society and serving individuals other than oneself Key informant interviews were conducted with the 18 finalists for Tennessee Teacher of the Year. Interviewees, were asked four basic questions: (1) Why did you choose teaching as a career? (2) How would you describe your moral purpose in teaching? (3) Has your moral purpose changed over time? (4) How would you describe the teacher's role in society? Data were analyzed qualitatively. Detailed profiles of each of the informants and reports of each interview are included. Conclusions were generally consistent with the literature. Teachers expressed several reasons for entering the profession: (1) working with people; (2) serving society; (3) continuing successful school experiences; and (4) desiring to emulate a significant teacher. Teachers described their moral purposes as related to caring, community awareness, lifelong learning, efficacy, and ethics. The teacher's role in society was described in similar terms. Several other important conclusions are described. First, these successful teachers had a sense of destiny with regard to entering the profession. This sense of destiny demonstrated the degree to which these successful teachers value the profession. Second, they described the importance of teachers serving others as role models. Third, most of the teachers suggested that their moral purposes have not changed very much over time even though students and methodologies have changed. Finally, they described community service as an important activity of the successful teacher. Again, these findings were consistent with the literature describing the dispositions of effective teachers. Recommendations for further research are included along with implications for teacher education and for in-service teachers. A model for devising a moral development plan for teacher education units is presented. Another model describes the process whereby in-service teachers can work to describe and develop their moral purposes. This study provides a detailed analysis of how successful teachers described their profession. The attitudes and beliefs underlying these descriptions are of significance to teachers and to teacher educators.

Abstract:
The purposes of this qualitative multiple case study were to determine the catalysts and pathways that caused principals to move from managers to effective leaders. Data were collected through a series of interviews with 4 principals who were selected through a purposeful sampling procedure. The interviews were audio recorded, transcribed, and analyzed using inductive coding to determine themes. Findings were presented for each theme within the context of reviewed literature. National polls indicate that 6 out of every 10 of the nation’s schools need major changes or an overhaul. Can improving the skills of their leaders make a difference in the performance of these schools? Research repeatedly supports the importance of a principal’s leadership to the overall success of a school. It also tells us that effective leadership is in short supply and that there is a need to initiate leadership development. The underlying task in this study was to determine how to help those who want or need to become better principals or how they can help themselves. Several themes emerged from data analysis, and each is important to consider when working on improving principals’ leadership abilities: the impact of mentors; university administrative certification programs; on the job experience; personal motivation; tacit knowledge; state, local, and private leadership development programs; and pathways to improvement. Specific recommendations for practices to improve principals’ overall effectiveness included incorporating more and lengthier mentoring in the early part of principals’ careers or as part of performance improvement plans; increasing study of cultural and instructional leadership in administrative certification programs; providing more field experiences in administrative certification programs; and developing individualized leadership improvement plans based on needs, interests, and learning styles of principals. The need for additional quantitative and qualitative research was also suggested.

The following research builds on the existing project management success and critical success factor research by focusing on the social mechanisms used by project managers and project teams to achieve success. Through analysis of previous literature five criteria for success are determined and the critical success factor themes of personnel and communication emerge. Study One uses semi-structured interviews with ten current or former construction project managers to develop a conceptual model of six antecedents to the previously identified critical success factor themes. The unit of measure is the project and not the project manager which allowed for ten interviews to provide insights into twenty projects, the ten most successful and the ten least successful of the interviewees careers. Those interviews provided six constructs or antecedents that lead to effective communication and project personnel. The personnel constructs are; planning, choosing, and retaining. The communication constructs are frequency, understanding, and inclusivity. Study Two uses semi-structured interviews with twenty current or former construction project managers to determine the causal social mechanisms that lead from the antecedents to the critical success factor themes. Through recording, transcribing, coding, and analyzing the interviewee’s responses project managers and project teams use similar mechanisms to achieve the critical success factor themes. Knowing those mechanisms will benefit practicing project managers.

Wright, Lester. "Identifying Successful Online Adult Learners." ScholarWorks, 2015. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/1430.

Abstract:
This qualitative case study examined the lack of success by and high attrition rates of adult learners enrolled in online higher education courses at a public research university in the southeastern United States. The conceptual framework integrated Knowles' theory of andragogy with a composited model that combined elements of Tinto's persistence model with Bean and Metzner's student attrition model. The research questions examined factors and characteristics contributing to the unsuccessful completion of online courses for adult learners. The data were collected in 2 separate phases using a purposeful sample comprised of 152 adult learners who volunteered to participate in the study and had enrolled in an online course at the university between the fall 2013 and spring 2015. The findings revealed that factors such as work-related issues, lack of time management, and personal issues contributed to students' unsuccessful completion of online courses. Additionally, the participants' success depended on their strengths and weaknesses with time management skills, motivation and dedication, technological skills, and communication skills in online learning. The findings were used to create a pre-orientation workshop designed to assist adult learners prior to taking their first online course by assessing student readiness levels for online learning and identifying deficiencies in skills required to be successful. Offering a pre-orientation workshop session to first-time online adult learners will increase their likelihood of success and foster a positive effect on social change in this population by improving retention in an online learning environment.

Bullock, Michael L. "Successful Human Resource Outsourcing Strategies." ScholarWorks, 2018. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/6181.

Abstract:
Human resource outsourcing (HRO) is a strategic choice that managers implement because of a variety of anticipated benefits. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to identify HRO strategies managers used to reduce operating costs while maintaining human resource (HR) effectiveness. Data were collected from semistructured interviews using open-ended questions and a review of company documents. Study participants represented 3 midwestern firms with 50 or more employees. The participants drawn from the population consisted of a minimum of 2 participants per organization who had increased their organization's strategic value using HRO strategies. The transaction cost economics (TCE) theory was the conceptual framework for this study. Data were analyzed using methodological triangulation to identify codes from words, phrases, and sentences using multiple sources to identify recurring themes. Five key themes emerged: outsourcing strategies, outsourced functions, operational costs, organizational effectiveness, and success measurement. The findings of this study may lead to social change by supporting managers in making HRO decisions conducive to reducing operating costs while maintaining HR effectiveness, which might positively impact social change by providing core function jobs to the local community thereby decreasing unemployment rates.

Danielson, Ramona Ann. "Childhood Adversity and Successful Aging." Diss., North Dakota State University, 2017. https://hdl.handle.net/10365/27470.

Full text
Abstract:
Extant literature offers consensus regarding the long-term impacts of childhood adversity (CA) but its impact on successful aging is not well understood. The Midlife in the United States (MIDUS) study ? a nationally representative sample including 1,017 adults 55-76 (Ryff et al., 2016) ? did not include a measure of CA exposure for use in analyses. Two papers were developed for this dissertation. The first paper, An effective measure of childhood adversity for use with older adults, explored whether a cumulative CA measure that is effective for older adults could be developed using existing MIDUS questions. It provided a rationale for operationalization of CA for researchers and for creating a cumulative score of eight CA types. Distributions of individual items and the CA score were consistent with past studies using similar CA measures. The overall factor structure of the scale was consistent with previous research: 1) household dynamics (did not live with both biological parents until age 16, substance abuse in the home, financial distress, moved three or more times) and 2) child abuse and neglect (sexual assault, emotional abuse, physical abuse, emotional neglect). Consistent with the literature, CA score showed a significant negative association with life satisfaction and positive association with number of chronic conditions, and dose-response relationships with cumulative CA. This study demonstrated that CA score, created using existing MIDUS data, was an effective measure for use with older adults. The second paper, The impact of childhood adversity on successful aging for older adults, examined the impact of CA score on successful aging for older adults, operationalized using eight dimensions of wellness. Results showed that CA affected successful aging decades later. Controlling for age and gender, hierarchical multiple regression showed a significant negative association between CA score and emotional, physical, social, financial, environmental, and spiritual wellness as well as the cumulative wellness index, and no significant association with intellectual or occupational wellness. Prevention is the best way to address public health implications of CA. However, the present study provided insight into successful aging and can inform interventions that target adults for whom prevention of CA is not possible.
