Abstract:
PurposeFamily firms (FF) reveal a considerable heterogeneity in their innovation behavior. Due to the successful long-term preservation of their innovation capacity via special resources and routines, multi-generational FF are of special interest in terms of learning from good practices. Against this background, the purpose of this paper is to ascertain principles for successful innovation behavior in long-term successful FF and to contribute to bridging the theory-practice gap.Design/method/approachResults are generated by analyzing innovation and innovation processes in five cases of long-term successful FF. On the basis of these good practice cases, the “rules of the game” of innovating are re-constructed using fine and system analyses based on narrative interviews with the FF CEOs.FindingsIntense reflection on the innovation characteristics of the five good practice cases along with a critical examination of the literature on innovation in FF were used to derive practical suggestions for FF in the form of 11 principles for FF taking a proactive interest in innovation.Practical implicationsThe 11 generated principles of successfully innovative FF were validated by FF CEOs who confirmed the practical relevance of these principles as valuable guidelines for successful innovation. Owners and managers may reflect on these principles against the background of the innovation behavior of their firms and adapt them to their contextual conditions.Originality/valueThese principles serve as tangible suggestions for developing adequate innovation management strategies for individual FF. Furthermore, two FF CEOs were invited to comment on the viability of principles based on their comprehensive practical experience.

Abstract:
Operation and maintenance of communally managed water infrastructure is still an uphill task despite over a decade of implementing community-based water management system in rural water provision in Uganda. Using mixed methods and Ostrom’s eight design principles as an analytical framework, this article examines the relevance of the design principles in explaining the success and failure of collective self-management institutions in determining sustainable access to safe water in Uganda. The findings show that, to a large extent, the differences in water infrastructure management effectiveness in the two study communities are explained by the existence or absence of the organizational characteristics prescribed by the design principles. The results further highlight additional factors that are critical for successful community-based water management which are not explicitly covered by the design principles. This implies, therefore, that the design principles should not be used as a ‘blueprint’ on resource management regimes especially in developing countries.

Abstract:
AbstractAtrial fibrillation is a multilateral arrhythmia, which causes the clinician to encounter difficulties in its therapeutic approach for each new patient. The purpose of this paper aims in particular at evaluating the management of atrial fibrillation, namely its cardioversion and rhythm control. The population study consisted of 50 patients diagnosed with atrial fibrillation, who underwent transesophageal echocardiographic investigation before cardioversion. All of these patients had transesophageal echocardiography. Certain echocardiographic parameters, such as the size of the left atrium, the presence of intracavitary thrombi, the left atrial appendage flow velocity, and the presence of spontaneous contrast, were taken into account. Cardioversion (electrical and pharmacological) was successful in 78.05% of patients. An appendage flow velocity greater than 40 cm/s, the absence of spontaneous contrast and the normal size of the left atrium, can be among the predictors of successful cardioversion.

The solution of new tasks facing the leaders of public administration at the present stage of development of the Ukrainian state requires an increase in the efficiency of public administration and public administration as one of the priorities based on the principles of democracy, nation and human-centrism. The relevance of the topic of updating the principles of leadership development in public administration is closely related to updating management mechanisms in the information society, changing the traditional paradigm of management, characterized by stability, control, competition, homogeneity, egocentrism and heroism to a new one, which is characterized by fluidity, delegation of power, cooperation, heterogeneity, social relevance and modesty. The new management paradigm, which is partially being introduced into public administration and public administration, increasingly requires the introduction of modern leadership principles, which are manifested through the assertion of moral values in the personality of a leader, his behavior models and reforming organizational structures. According to the author, such signs of leadership as delegation of power and cooperation in public administration determine the development of leadership through its consideration in conjunction with the principle of command. The purpose of the article is to reveal the essence of the priority principles of leadership in public management activities, revealing the state of the study of this issue in domestic and foreign literature. The author of the article focuses on the definition – principle, which is analyzed as the basis for any theory or teaching, explanations or guidelines for action, a person’s inner conviction; basic rule of conduct; features in the creation of something, etc. The article reveals the priority principles of leadership as a prerequisite for the formation of a successful personality, successful leadership qualities. The system of principles of leadership development in public administration activities consists of an innovative principle of leadership development; the principle of independence for the development of new rules and regulations; the principle of subsidiarity to ensure the implementation of powers to the bodies of representative power; the principle of socially responsible leadership to ensure ethical relations between subordinates and the leader; the principle of justice, which is a special value measure for maintaining a balance between legal and moral values; the principle of professional and psychological readiness for public administration activities; methodological principle of information and analytical support.

Abstract:
Purpose – Previous research has shown that user-oriented care predicts older persons’ satisfaction with care. What is yet to be researched is how senior management facilitates the implementation of user-oriented care. The purpose of this study is to investigate the organizing principles and management climate characterizing successful elderly care. Design/methodology/approach – The department in one highly ranked municipality was selected and compared with a more average municipality. On-site in-depth semi-structured interviews with department managers and participatory observations at managers’ meetings were conducted in both municipalities. Findings – Results revealed three key principles for successful elderly care: organizing care from the viewpoint of the older person; recruiting and training competent and autonomous employees; instilling a vision for the mission that guides operations at all levels in the organization. Furthermore, using climate theory to interpret the empirical material, in the highly successful municipality the management climate was characterized by affective support and cognitive autonomy, in contrast to a more instrumental work climate primarily focusing on organizational structure and doing the right things characterizing the more average municipality. Originality/value – The authors suggest that guiding organizing principles are intertwined with management climate and that there are multiple perspectives that must be considered by the management, that is, the views of the older persons, the co-workers and the mission. These results can guide future care quality developments, and increase the understanding of the importance of organizational climate at the senior management level.

Abstract:
We propose a new approach for island-wide planning and implementation of ecosystem management in the Pacific, recognizing a lack of replicability, sustainability and cost-effectiveness in other approaches. ʻIntegrated island managementʼ (IIM) operates through coordinated networks of institutions and communities focused on sustainable and adaptive management of natural resources. IIM enables simultaneous and cost-effective achievement of ecosystem-based management, climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction while conserving biodiversity, maintaining ecosystem services and securing human health and well-being. We present ten guiding principles for IIM, and then use these to evaluate 36 case studies from the Pacific islands. Most case studies were pilot or demonstration projects with little evidence of planning to ensure long-term financial and human capacity needs were sustained, beyond the life of the projects, or could be replicated at significant scales. Management outcomes in the Pacific will be enhanced by: (1) building on foundations of customary management practice and social networks; (2) working holistically across relevant ecological and governance scales, through coordinated but decentralized and nested institutions; (3) empowering local communities to participate in integrated planning and implementation; and (4) embedding IIM practice into national systems for long-term sustainability and replication. These also ultimately depend on the context and externalities, beyond the control of practitioners. Cost-effectiveness and appropriateness are also critical for successful IIM in the Pacific islands but ultimately there is little alternative for effective biodiversity conservation.

Abstract:
Cave tourism is a significant sector of natural area tourism in many parts of the world, and in most situations cave guides play an integral role in the visitor experience, providing interpretation and information. The field of heritage interpretation has a significant body of professional literature and practice, yet little relates to subterranean landscapes. This research explores the guided interpretive methods used and experiences created to interpret Australian tourist cave sites. It taps the voices of experienced Australian cave guides to identify the current personal interpretive practices and identifies some key principles for successful guided cave interpretation. This study is qualitative in nature and utilized a participatory workshop with experienced cave guides, followed by a formal peer feedback process. Nine principles were articulated through the research process. Ham's (1992) four qualities of successful interpretation were affirmed and a further five principles emerged from the workshop discussions: group management, protection, two-way communication, holistic approach, and emotion. The first four principles are variously presented in the existing literature but the fifth, emotion, is less well articulated in the literature.

A survey of 45 GMs of the largest hotels in several U.S. states found a strong perception that hotel-industry workers and managers do not always behave ethically. The GMs' estimates of the annual cost of ethical violations in their own hotels ranged from under $10,000 to over $500,000, with a mean exceeding $100,000. Given a list of 12 ethical principles, the respondents ranked the concepts according to their importance to profitable hotel operation and then again according to how frequently each principle was breached. The four most important ethical principles for successful operation were leadership, accountability, commitment to excellence, and integrity. The three most-often-breached principles (in the managers' view) were accountability, commitment to excellence, and respect for others. Anecdotal comments comprised scathing observations of unethical behavior. Like so many people, the respondents considered themselves more ethical than others in the industry and also believed that the industry itself had a distance to go in relation to other businesses. The results indicated to the authors that college-level instruction in ethics would be useful for hospitality students.

The book helped organizations increase profit margins through process management. The book focuses on a manufacturing plant that was unprofitable because of ineffective machines (bottlenecks). However, with the mentorship of a management expert (Jonah), the business turned around to become profitable. The book outlines critical messages to managers while helping break out of the conventional way of thinking and take actions towards success. Goldratt and Cox promote the theory of constraints to improve productivity and profitability in an organization, as will be discussed in this article. Also, there is a critical book analysis and how it relates to HR Management is discussed. Herpes zoster infection is a painful worldwide disease. The inappropriate and delayed treatment causes prolongation of the disease with debilitating symptoms and postherpetic neuralgia. Herpes zoster is commonly known as shingle's caused by varicella zoster virus (VZV). Current studies have shown that exosomes play a significant role in pathogenesis as well as the spread of herpes. Combination therapy has shown pain reduction, reduction in burning, and arrest progression of the disease. This technique is cost effective and easy to apply. In Ayurveda herpes can be correlated with Pittaj visarpa. Principle of treatment is Raktmokshan (Bloodletting) and Pradeha (Local application of medicines). A 50-year-old male presented in OPD of Kayachikitsa at Datta Meghe Ayurved Medical College Hospital and Research Centre. We treated his Herpes zoster on the basic principles of management of Vata-Pittaj Visarpa. A rapid decrease in pain severity was observed after 7 days of Combination Therapy according to Zoster Specific Brief Pain Inventory (ZBPI) Questionnaire. Lesions of Herpes Zoster were found completely crusted and healed within 2 weeks. Repeated application of Ayurvedic Formulation Lepa along with internal medications gave complete relief. Adaptive trials are necessary to discover further practical applicability of Ayurveda and modern treatment together. Future research on the effect of combination therapy on exosomes is necessary.

Industry 4.0 refers to the new technological development occurred at the industrial production systems. It evolved as a result of integrating Internet of Things, Cyber-Physical Systems, Big-Data, Artificial Intelligence, and Cloud Computing in the industrial systems. This integration aided new capabilities to achieve a higher level of business excellence, efficiency, and effectiveness. Total Quality Management (TQM) is a managerial approach to achieve an outstanding business excellence. There are several approaches to apply TQM principles at any organization. Industry 4.0 could be utilized as a key enabler for TQM especially by integrating its techniques with the TQM best practices. This paper suggests a theoretical framework for integrating Industry 4.0 features with the TQM principles (according to ISO 9000:2015 standards family) in order to open the door for further research to address the real impact of utilizing Industry 4.0 for serving the TQM implementation approaches.

Abstract:
The existing solid waste management principles are increasingly being replaced with discussions on circular economy (CE) principles in contemporary deliberations on solid waste handling. This shift is supported by the global adoption of the concept of sustainable development. The CE offers better prospects to solid waste management and has been implemented successfully in its full theory, practice, and policies in some developed locations of the world. The socio-economic disadvantages, insufficient expert knowledge and a lack of information have hindered its appropriateness and implementation in low and middle-income countries. Hence, the current research study examines the challenges and opportunities of implementing the circularity principle at the industrial sector level of a typical developing economy—Nigeria. Four different industries were selected for this case study—telecommunications, water packaging, pulp and paper and the food industry. These industries represent the major waste streams in an urban solid waste mix (waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE), plastic, paper and organic). This study discovered several barriers and existing pre-conditions in place that could either foster or militate against the smooth and successful application of a CE model as a simple modification of the generic model. This study also discussed future directions on the implementation of the model.

Abstract:
Human Resources Management (HRM), managing work and people to achieve their desired goals, is a fundamental activity of any enterprise or organization that employs people. HRM is the basis for their creation and development. There are a number of different HRM styles, ideologies, forms, and methods, but there are no universal models that can improve performance for each enterprise or enhance their relative effectiveness in specific strategic areas, such as the introduction of new production technologies, the use of advertising campaigns. or the purchase of real estate. However, it is impossible to question the necessity of the personnel management process itself, that is, rational attempts to organize work and manage people. The purpose of the paper is to outline the theoretical foundations of personnel management of construction enterprises. Over the last twenty years, the relationship between HRM and strategic management studies has deepened, significantly widening the socio-economic range and possible cause and effect. Getting acquainted with the scientific works of the founders on this subject allows us to distinguish three main areas: 1. Micro HRM - covers the subheadings of HR policies and practices that can be grouped into two main categories. 2. Strategic HRM deals with systemic issues and issues that have serious implications for the enterprise. 3. International HRM - less involved in the context of strategic human resource management, focused on HR management in multinational companies. In the construction field, the HRM is mainly focused on the adequate provision of projects with human resources with relevant experience, professional characteristics and the right skillsets for their successful implementation. Personnel managers should have the ability to identify and document project roles and responsibilities, developing planning with a detailed description of the intermediate processes required to complete the project (or projects) and identify its human resource needs. Construction, due to its specificity and versatility, is one of the most difficult areas for managing people. The operational realities faced by construction companies confirm the risks associated with the close relationship between employee needs and performance issues.

Abstract:
Background: Management skills are an essential component of a pharmacy graduate’s abilities for successful practice. Although pharmacy education standards require that students have a working knowledge of management principles, students often do not see the value in management and business courses. One innovative approach is restructuring course content using case examples and real-world experiences to improve student understanding of finance and management principles. Innovation: Two specific changes were implemented in a second year (P2) management and finance course to improve the relevance of business principles. Course content was organized around current pharmacy service cases from a variety of practice settings and supported by the value of problem-based learning. Post-graduate year 1 (PGY-1) administrative pharmacy residents were engaged as course teaching assistants (TAs) who brought real-world experiences into the class. An analysis of pre- and post-course voluntary surveys, course evaluations, and TA evaluations assessed the impact of the course redesign. Findings: The course redesign achieved its intended goal of improving student-perceived course relevance. This was shown through statistically significant improvements in course evaluations that were intended to measure student perception of pharmacy management and its relevance in their future career. Student completed TA evaluations showed that those who reported their TA shared real-world applications had higher confidence in applying course concepts and greater understanding of course materials. Conclusions: Administrative pharmacy residents were successfully integrated into a pharmacy management course redesign, resulting in improved student perceptions of course relevance.

Portal designers and managers face the difficulties of creating effective information architectures for portals, dashboards, and tile-based platforms for delivering business information and functionality using only flat portlets. This article introduces the idea of a system of standardized building blocks that can simplifies portal design and management, and effectively support growth in content, functionality, and users over time. In enterprise and other large scale social settings, using standardized components allows for the creation of a library of tiles that can be shared across communities of users. It then outlines the design principles underlying the building block system, and the simple guidelines for combining blocks together to create any type of tile-based environment.

Abstract:
A survey of 19 museums across the USA sought to identify the change processes associated with the effective management of a specific case of legislated change imposed by The Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act 1990 (NAGPRA). Interviews were also conducted with a sample of these museums to understand further the change process adopted. It was hypothesised that those organisations which were perceived by respondents to have achieved successful change outcomes, would have managed the change transition in accordance with generic change principles in the change literature, regardless of the legislated nature of the change. The findings provided strong support for these general principles of effective change management in situations where the organisation has little choice about the change initiative. However the legislated nature of the change and the initial lack of understanding of its scope and implications produced some deviations from these general principles, particularly with respect to the dimensions of visioning, participation and allocation of resources to the change program.

Abstract:
There are analogous challenges when it comes to the management and provision of health services and drinking water in First Nations reserves in Canada; both represent human rights and both involve complex and multijurisdictional management. The purpose of this study is to translate the tenets of Jordan’s Principle, a child-first principle regarding health service provision, within the broader context of First Nation drinking water governance in order to identify avenues for positive change. This project involved secondary analysis of data from 53 semi-structured, key informant (KI) interviews across eight First Nation communities in western Canada. Data were coded according to the three principles of: provision of culturally inclusive management, safeguarding health, and substantive equity. Failure to incorporate Traditional Knowledge, water worldviews, and holistic health as well as challenges to technical management were identified as areas currently restricting successful drinking water management. Recommendations include improved infrastructure, increased resources (both financial and non-financial), in-community capacity building, and relationship building. To redress the inequities currently experienced by First Nations when it comes to management of and access to safe drinking water, equitable governance structures developed from the ground up and embedded in genuine relationships between First Nations and Canadian federal government agencies are required.

Abstract:
Superior mesenteric artery (SMA) syndrome is a rare but serious complication following scoliosis surgery. Early diagnosis and management are key factors for successful conservative treatment to avoid the need for emergency laparotomies which causes higher morbidity or even mortality. We report two adolescent idiopathic scoliosis patients with Cobb angle of 49° and 132°, respectively, and low body mass index who presented with SMA syndrome following posterior spinal fusion from T2 to L3 and were treated successfully with conservative management. Abdominal radiographs showed distended gastric shadow. Computed tomography angiography of the abdomen showed decreased aortomesenteric angle and SMA-aorta distance. Both patients were treated successfully with conservative treatment which included three principles: gastric decompression with nasogastric tube, correction of electrolytes imbalance, and nutritional support with low volume, high calorie nutritional supplement. Both patients were started with small but frequent meals. Surgeries were not required in both cases. Early diagnosis and management are the key factors to successful treatment in SMA syndrome. Patients with SMA can be treated successfully with conservative treatment comprising of nasogastric decompression, electrolyte correction, and nutritional support with small but frequent meals.

Abstract:
This article presents empirical research that seeks to investigate the principles of management that lead towards successful multi-sector collaboration through the analysis lens of effectuation theory. The target of this empirical research is a destination marketing organization (DMO) considered to be a classic example of multi-sector collaboration focusing on the destination management performed by DMO as a case study. DMO Roppongi in Tokyo has been selected as the sample for this empirical research, and in particular, Nogi Shrine (Nogi-Jinja) has been selected as a venue for inbound meetings and a successful case of destination management. In Japan, shrines are considered as sacred sites; hence, the research began with the question: ‘Why was Nogi Shrine provided as a venue?’. We interviewed both the executive director of DMO Roppongi and the contact person at Nogi Shrine and conducted a qualitative analysis by focusing on the management features emerged during the process of venue selection. In the world of start-ups, entrepreneurs are required to search for business opportunities proactively, but this research has investigated that in the multi-sector collaboration, the abundant resources are mainly possessed by the participating stakeholders that can be associated with the business opportunities. Hence, the key management point in this case is the impartial use of the resources ‘that are already there’ and available for use. This research has formulated this discovery, as ‘the O-Bento principle’ in line with the effectuation theory.

Abstract:
This review deals with modern principles of management of patients with liver cirrhosis complicated by ascites depending on its clinical manifestations. The search strategy included the use of the PubMed database, the Google Scholar system, Cochrane systematic reviews, and reference lists of individual articles that cover relevant publications for 1986-2016 and match the following key words: liver cirrhosis, portal hypertension, ascites, pathogenesis, diagnostics, treatment. Inclusion criteria were confined to uncomplicated or refractory ascites in patients with liver cirrhosis. The analysis of literature data revealed poor prognosis of this condition and high mortality rate despite progress in its management. A major prerequisite for the successful treatment is stratification of risks of unfavourable outcome and the choice of adequate personalized therapy. The pathogenetically sound prescription of pharmacotherapy and further optimization of minimally invasive methods make it possible to improve the quality of life and survivorship of the patients.

Abstract:
Today, more than ever, it is important to thoroughly study the experience of the structural organization and management of organizations, the experience of using electronic computing systems, the experience of accounting for the theory of systems, the use of technology in management, etc. All this is not only legitimate, but also vital, especially at the present time, in a democratic State governed by the rule of law. Therefore, we need to ask ourselves: have we studied, comprehended and generalized the socialist experience (meaning the experience of the USSR and the fraternal socialist countries) in the management and organization of production in a sufficiently deep and thorough way? Is there a sufficient number of specific studies of new forms and methods of government that are necessary for the successful implementation of the political objectives of the state established by Chapter 1 of the Constitution of the Russian Federation, especially taking into account the amendments made? Undoubtedly, the Marxist-Leninist science of management is quite high in its social potential, in its scientific methodology, in its humanistic ideal, in solving the problems of the role of man in the management of society, the relationship of the subject to the managed object, on issues of discipline and labor organization, and many other issues related to the effectiveness of management. The more fully and deeply the positive elements of forms and methods of governance in different countries are studied, the more deeply the Russian experience will be understood.

Abstract:
Cushing's disease (CD) is the result of excess secretion of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) by a benign monoclonal pituitary adenoma. The excessive secretion of ACTH stimulates secretion of cortisol by the adrenal glands, resulting in supraphysiological levels of circulating cortisol. The pathophysiological levels of cortisol are associated with hypertension, diabetes, obesity, and early death. Successful resection of the CD-associated ACTH-secreting pituitary adenoma is the treatment of choice and results in immediate biochemical remission with preservation of pituitary function. Accurate and early identification of CD is critical for effective surgical management and optimal prognosis. The authors review the current pathophysiological principles, diagnostic methods, and management of CD.

Abstract:
In this paper, we try to reveal the principles that cause the processing stages of economic crisis as follows. First, most of economic crises are caused by a financial crisis because financial variables have the biggest variation in the economy as the principles of credit creation and credit destruction work altogether. Second, most of financial crises go through three stages of manias, panics, and crashes as Kindleberger clarified. Third, manias are caused by the time-shift of demand from the future which increases further the current demand and raises the prices of real estate and stocks. Fourth, panics are caused by the hollowing-out of demand which is caused eventually by the demand time-shift, with bubbles broken. Fifth, crashes are caused by the principle of credit destruction which decreases the money amount by the credit multiplier, resulting in a financial crisis. When this principle of financial crisis is understood well, it would be possible to foresee the development of the financial crisis and to prevent some damages such as a bankruptcy due to a sudden lack of liquidity. Then the crisis management would be performed better than before. This paper would contribute to a successful business management and to the evolution of economics.

The main criteria for successful enterprise management are efficiency and effectiveness, and control as one of the management functions, in fact, is aimed at ensuring them. At the same time, the modern system of internal control often goes beyond financial regulation and becomes a single entity with the quality management systems of the organization, providing monitoring of the efficiency and effectiveness of entire business processes. The relevance of internal control issues increases due to the growth of economic instability and the emergence of new risks. At the same time, there is currently no effective practice of implementing internal control systems based on process-based and risk-based approaches, and the scope of regulation of these processes differs both in the methodological (recommendatory) nature of the acts themselves and in the inconsistency of their content.

Abstract:
Integrated water resources management approaches have been developed worldwide to improve water resources management practices. There are however, lingering issues with reference to the applicability of its integrated principles, especially when shifting from policy to practice (action). By conducting an exploratory case study in the Sao Paulo State, Brazil, this paper explores different stakeholders' perspectives regarding the water policy (Water Act of 1991). Through analysing institutional and water governance arrangements, the research assesses if current water policy is being translated into practice. Analysis suggests that the water policy and proposed principles are aligned with international approaches for water resources management. However, results also indicate that the principles by themselves are not sufficient to guarantee successful practice of a decentralised, participatory and integrated water resources management system. In a complex water management system, such as the one in the Sao Paulo State, coordination among different government levels and sectors is considered to be a key element to improve the likelihood of water policy implementation.

Contemporary management is a synthesis of the classical, behavioural, quantitative and modern management movements. One of the keys to successful management is the ability to understand and apply modern management principles and techniques effectively. Studying fundamental concepts provides a foundation that effective managers of the future need in terms of understanding techniques, organizational cultures and theories.
