Abstract Abstract 852 Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a hereditary red cell disorder characterized by the presence of pathological HbS, which polymerizes upon deoxygenation promoting red blood cell (RBC) dehydration and sickling. In SCD, the dense RBCs play a crucial role in the pathogenesis of sickle cell related organ damage and clinical manifestations. Although progress has been made in pathogenesis of SCD, the treatment options for SCD have limited pharmacological tools for clinical practice. Recent three-dimensional mapping investigations in southern Simcoe County, Ontario, allow refinement of the existing regional stratigraphic framework. Analysis of 25 continuously cored boreholes has revealed a complex but consistent sediment succession that provides a record of the last two glacial cycles (Marine Isotope Stages 1–6). Five stratigraphic units (SU1–SU5) comprise the pre-Late Wisconsin record. The stratigraphy is floored by a presumed Illinoian glacial complex consisting of a lower, coarse-grained till (SU1), locally overlain by stratified glaciolacustrine and glaciofluvial sedim

Abstract Background In many areas of the United States, substance use disorders (SUD) have increased dramatically over the past decade. Overdose deaths have increased as well, and Kentucky ranks among the nation’s leaders in deaths per 100,000 population. Infective endocarditis (IE) is a well-known complication of intravenous drug use, contributing to significant morbidity and mortality, but few studies have evaluated the effect of the current SUD epidemic on rates and demographics of IE. We sought to examine the trends in IE and IE with SUD at our institution. Methods We collected data from p

We have confirmed that dissociation of the dimeric SOD molecule into a monomeric one can be readily detected in solution by the use of capillary electrophoresis (CE), which is based on the fact that the peak height in the CE profile is highly dependent on the aggregation conditions of the protein molecule. Based on this fact, it has become apparent that the hydrogen peroxide molecule induces the dissociation of the dimeric structure of SOD, and this should give reasonable explanation for the inactivation of SOD by hydrogen peroxide. Abstract. Submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) has been implicated as a significant source of nutrients and potentially harmful substances to the coastal sea. Although the number of reported SGD sites has increased recently, their stratigraphical architecture and aquifer geometry are rarely investigated in detail. This study analyses a multifaceted dataset of offshore seismic sub-bottom profiles, multibeam and side-scan sonar images of the seafloor, radon measurements of seawater and groundwater, and onshore ground-penetrating radar and refraction seismic profiles in order to establish the de

Abstract Background Neisseria meningitidis (Nm) can cause invasive disease, but it also asymptomatically colonizes the pharynx in approximately 10% of the general population. Older studies have reported higher carriage rates (>30%) among individuals attending sexually transmitted disease (STD) clinics. This study examined the prevalence of oropharyngeal Nm carriage in STD clinic attendees in Columbus, Ohio. Methods Per normal procedures, all patients presenting for care in the STD clinic who report oral sex in the last year are screened for oropharyngeal Neisseria gonorrhoeae (Ng) using nuc

Context. VLA 1623−2417 is a triple protostellar system deeply embedded in Ophiuchus A. Sources A and B have a separation of 1.1″, making their study difficult beyond the submillimeter regime. Lack of circumstellar gas emission suggested that VLA 1623−2417 B has a very cold envelope and is much younger than source A, which is generally considered the prototypical Class 0 source. Aims. We explore the consequences of new ALMA Band 9 data on the spectral energy distribution (SED) of VLA 1623−2417 and their inferred nature. Methods. We constructed and analyzed the SED of each component in VLA 1623−

455 Background: Patients undergoing esophagectomy frequently experience malnutrition, which in combination with the catabolic effects of surgery can result in loss of muscle mass and function. Safe swallowing requires the preservation of muscle mass. Modified barium swallow (MBS) enables assessment of postoperative swallowing impairments. We assessed the incidence and risk factors of swallowing dysfunction post-esophagectomy. Methods: Patients with a MBS post-esophagectomy were identified between January 2015-June 2019 at Levine Cancer Institute at Carolinas Medical Center. Swallowing was eval

ABSTRACT In an effort to understand the physiological functions of cytochrome P-450 in the central nervous system and pituitary gland, we evaluated changes in the level of the enzyme as a function of the endocrine status of rats and the ability of these tissues to synthesize or degrade steroids. The P-450 content of microsomes prepared from the hypothalamic preoptic area (HPOA), the olfactory lobes and the cerebrum was 0·040 ± 0·009 and in the pituitary gland 2·2 ± 0·6 (s.d.) nmol/g tissue. The P-450 content of the HPOA and olfactory lobes, but not of the rest of the cerebrum, was influenced b

Ti-50.8%Ni shape memory alloy was subjected to four passes equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) with angle 120◦ via route Bc at 450°C. The deformation homogeneity was analyzed on planes across the thickness of the deformed sample by Deform-3D software. Two methods were used from the simulation model to quantify deformation homogeneity , including strain standard deviation (SSD) and inhomogeneity index (Ci). In addition, The deformation heterogeneity of ECAP was analyzed experimentally from microhardness inhomogeneity index ( HII) based on Vickers microhardness test results. In the present work
