Abstract:
This book begins with the recognition that continued practical denial of the human rights of children globally is due to the absence of any theoretical foundation justifying such rights. The goal of this book is to provide that foundation, which will depart from the eighteenth-century rationalist justification for human rights generally and provide a new conceptualization that embraces the facts of human vulnerability and capacity for promising as the real basis for all human rights. As such, children also qualify for full human rights, including to a safe environment; to dignity; and to full participation as citizens, including voting rights. The theoretical foundation of children’s human rights expands upon the “participation” rights included in the 1990 UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. Furthermore, full recognition of children’s rights alters the composition and focus of human rights to include those of future generations, group rights, and the preeminence of social and economic rights over civil and political rights.

Abstract:
This chapter shows how anti-polygamy legislation emerged from a particular imagining of the meaning of America. The Edmunds and Edmunds-Tucker Acts of 1882 and 1887, respectively, mobilized a particular vision of the nation to drive into submission Mormonism's challenge to American political culture. Anti-Mormonism had therefore accomplished its cultural work by constituting Mormons as an un-American threat to the nation and its legal work by taking aim at the citizenship rights of Mormons. Ultimately, the controversy over polygamy helped formulate the multiple meanings of citizenship and national identity as the Mormon question became a location at which the gendered, marital, and religious limits of the body politic were tried.

Lu, Yao. Parental Migration and Well-Being of Left-Behind Children from a Comparative Perspective. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190265076.003.0006.

Full text
Abstract:
Parent–child separation due to migration has become increasingly prominent in developing countries. This chapter first discusses a conceptual framework for understanding the effect of parental migration on children’s development through both a socioeconomic and a psychosocial process. The chapter further highlights the importance of a comparative perspective in understanding how parental migration affects children, suggesting that the field should move beyond the debate of whether children benefit or suffer to examining the circumstances under which children benefit or suffer from parental migration. The author identifies several factors that shape the relative balance of economic and psychosocial processes arising from parental migration and its overall impact: which member migrates (mother, father, both, or nonparent family members), which dimensions of child development are studied (education, cognitive, health, emotional or behavioral development), where migrant parents go (domestically or internationally), and the social and economic context of the origin community.

Weisband, Edward. From Collective Violence to Human Violation. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190677886.003.0002.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter argues that the psychodynamics of desire contribute to the transformation of “ordinary” individuals into those who directly and indirectly support or engage in genocide, mass atrocity, and their performative dramaturgies. The chapter describes the practices of the macabresque in terms of noir ecstasy and the psychodynamics of obscene surplus enjoyment in the transgressive theaters of human violation. Comparative depictions of the macabresque in the Guatemalan, Chilean, Sri Lankan, Congolese, Darfurian, and other cases are framed by Lacanian psychosocial theory and concepts focused on ideology, fantasy, and personality that analytically transitions from festivality and the carnivalesque to the macabresque. Human violation and the desire for absolute power drive perpetrator behavior in ways that normalize their anti-normative or anomic hatred and enemy-making relative to victims’ fixed, fixated, and frozen identitarian categories that become naturalized, and often racialized. Victims suffer racialization by means of forced displacement. This produces spatialized “islands” of demonization.

Abstract:
This chapter explores the degree to which various psychopathologies influence metamemory. The literature suggests such patients suffer different impairment patterns rather than global, nonspecific impairments of metamemory processes and the memory-metamemory relationships: Depressed patients present memory and metamemory difficulties; obsessive-compulsive patients appear to suffer from metamemory impairments rather than memory disturbances. ADHD patients suffer more from control process impairments than from monitoring deficits. Patients with autism present metamemory and memory difficulties that are restricted to certain context. The chapter focuses on schizophrenia, as impairments of cognition and consciousness are today considered core symptoms of the illness and contribute to patients ‘difficulties in social and professional integration. Patients with schizophrenia present specific disruptions and selective preservation of the metacognitive processes, as the accuracy of their metamemory monitoring is relatively preserved, whereas their metamemory control is sometimes impaired. The presence of preserved abilities allows for optimism regarding patients’ possibilities to improve their memory.
