Abstract:
Recently the European Union proposed a “Fair minimum wage initiative”. The proposal is to create a common framework across the EU 28 member countries. However, the Nordic countries have rejected the proposal. We investigate this issue through a literature review. We start with a presentation of empirical research on the effects of a minimum wage. In the theoretical analysis we use the simple classical monopsony model and the model with frictions in our examination of minimum wage effect on welfare and labour market participation. The conclusion is mixed concerning effects from an introduction of minimum wage, depending on how the countries adopt and implement the minimum wage. If the countries government implemented minimum wage correctly using specific industry minimum wage, there is clear evidence for a positive effect.

Abstract:
This study was carried out during the spring of 2009 in the highlands of Papua, Indonesia on a Minor Field Study (MFS) scholarship funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA). Indonesia is a developing country with Papua as a province in the most eastern part of the country. Mountains and jungles cover Papua, which makes health care hard for people to reach. Half of the child deaths in the world are connected to malnutrition and most of the suffering children live in developing countries. The authors had been informed about the high rate of malnutrition and child diseases among Papuans in the highlands and that the nurses who work in the highlands were faced with challenges when working to improve the health among children who suffer from malnutrition and their families. The aim of the study is to describe nurses‟ experience of working with children who suffer from malnutrition.A qualitative approach was chosen for the study and by using an open-ended interviewing method seven interviews were collected. Seven nurses were asked about their experience working with children who suffer from malnutrition. The interviews were collected at one specific hospital in the highlands of Papua and the respondents were of both gender. The interviews were transcribed and analyzed according to the qualitative content analysis. The result was presented in themes and sub-themes, where these three main areas were found: “Hindrance of health”, “Improving health”, and “Challenges”. The result shows that Papuans belief in spirits and traditional treatment and also lack of trust in the western medicine is a major problem for nurses who give care to the children suffering from malnutrition. The result is discussed in relation to background where relevant literature is referred to.<br>Program: Sjuksköterskeutbildning

Abstract:
Postpartum depression has increased among women in the postnatal stage of childbirth. With the occurrence of this escalation among women, more research and attention has been focused on prevention and intervention methods. These methods emphasize education awareness, symptom recognition, and effective support systems. The notion that if an expectant mother and her family utilize such techniques, postpartum depression may not become an issue. In this study the Beck's Depression Inventory and the Coping Response Inventory instruments were used to investigate postpartum depression and coping response in 150 African-American and Caucasian women. The results of this study revealed that only a small minority of women surveyed experienced postpartum depression and those that did not reported a high level of support network influence. This fact may reveal the relationship that certain coping responses may play in the prevention and intervention of postpartum depression.

Bissessar, Clarence B. "Do first year male undergraduates from poorer families suffer more mental health difficulties due to increased financial strain?" Thesis, University of Surrey, 2016. http://epubs.surrey.ac.uk/813101/.

Full text
Abstract:
Objective: Both financial strain and socio-economic status (SES) or class have been found to be negatively associated with mental health for students. In the context of national changes to higher education funding, male students from low SES backgrounds may be at particular risk of developing untreated mental health difficulties because of the way such distress tends to manifest in men, and because of their lack of help-seeking. The first year of university study is a period of significant transition for young people, which can increase their vulnerability to psychological distress. This study aims to look at the association between financial disadvantage and psychological wellbeing in male first year undergraduate students, and to examine whether this is mediated by perceived financial strain and subsequent stress. Design: A quantitative cross-sectional design was used. Method: Data was collected from 164 male students using an online questionnaire. This contained measures of financial strain, stress, depression, anxiety and family affluence. Pearson’s correlation coefficients were calculated to examine associations between the study variables. Bootstrapping analyses was conducted to test for the indirect effects of financial strain and stress. Main Findings: Lower family affluence scores were not directly associated with increased scores for depression, anxiety or stress symptoms; however, they were indirectly associated with increased scores for depression symptoms, through increased financial strain. Greater financial strain was associated with increased scores for anxiety and depression symptoms, through increased stress. Serial mediation of family affluence scores to mental health symptoms through both financial strain and then stress was not found. Conclusions: The findings support the broader idea that perceptions of financial circumstances are related to psychological wellbeing in the male student population. The study also supports the idea that male students have a stress-vulnerability that may lead those with higher perceived financial strain to experience psychological distress.

"Does God suffer? : divine passibility in Anglican theology from Lux mundi to the Second War : with particular reference to the thought of William Temple and John Kenneth Mozely." Thesis, University of Aberdeen, 1996. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.338400.

Full text
Abstract:
There was a remarkably rich and fertile period in British theology from the latter end of the nineteenth century to the outbreak of the Second World War. Some of the greatest growth with the most far-reaching implications for theology took place in the doctrine of God; particularly in the area of divine passibility. The objectives of the study are four-fold; 1) to concisely establish the origin and historical development of divine impassability and its impact upon classical theism, and to identify the chief linguistic and theological concerns of the doctrine, 2) to extensively document the confluence of religious, philosophical, and cultural factors within the life-setting of Anglicanism and British society which created the conditions for a dynamic reformation in the Anglican doctrine of God, 3) to demonstrate the outcome of this metanoia in the effectual dismantling of divine impassability in favour of a sustained and irrevocable advancement or enrichment in the Anglican idea of God, and 4) to establish as theological conversation partners William Temple and John Kenneth Mozley as representative Anglican theologians from our period of study. Two primary methods are employed in the study; 1) the critical analysis of the idea of the suffering of God within Anglicanism as viewed through the lens of the strengths and weaknesses of Temple's and Mozley's respective contributions to the impassability debates within English theology, 2) the chief vehicle for the pursuit of this analysis is a full exploration and application of the "six necessary questions" for inquiry into impassability posed by John Kenneth Mozley. These six questions form the framework for the theological conversation between Temple and Mozley undertaken in this thesis.

<p>The research papers about suffix arrays have grown many, and asymptotically better algorithms are being developed. There are, however, two areas that seem to have been a little forgotten - searching in external memory and document retrieval from a suffix array. We present and compare four different methods for document retrieval from an external suffix array. Our results show that only one yields adequate results in the presence of many documents, namely embedding document information into the suffix array. We also touch on the subject of searching external suffix arrays, presenting and discussing four techniques.</p>

Harrison, Catherine Victoria. "A mixed method investigation into the psychological well-being of individuals who have suffered from Guillain-Barré Syndrome." Thesis, University of Leicester, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/8604.

Full text
Abstract:
The needs of patients who are nursed on the ICU are becoming more widely recognised and services are beginning to reflect this. However there is little research into how patients who have suffered from a severe and progressive muscular paralysis called Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) experience the disease and subsequent hospitalisation. The purpose of this study was to explore how these patients experience the different aspects of the illness, including an extended period of paralysis and treatment on an ICU. This is intended to expand upon the limited research in this area and identify how the findings can inform clinical practice and future studies. Method: A systematic literature search identified research in relation to the experiences of individuals who had GBS which was utilised to form the basis of the understanding for this study. Very little systematic research has looked at individuals‟ experiences of Guillain-Barré Syndrome whilst ill and their subsequent recovery. A mixed methods study was carried out with the aim of adding to this research. Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis was selected as the method of analysis for Study 1, which involved interviews with seven participants who had experienced GBS severe enough to need treatment on an ICU. This then enabled quantitative questionnaires to be disseminated which asked about individuals‟ levels of anxiety, depression and Post Traumatic Stress symptomatology both retrospectively and following recovery in Study 2. Results: Study1 found that participants experienced GBS as either a slow and frustrating, or as a rapid and scary onset. The main themes that were developed included: the paralysis being viewed as multiple losses, frustration, difficulties associated with communication loss, vulnerability and frightening hallucinations. Study 2 utilised non-parametric analyses of the data and found that participants experienced high levels of anxiety and depression at the onset of GBS and that some continued to experience anxiety, depression and post traumatic symptoms after recovery from GBS. Generally the profile suggests predominantly anxiety problems during the acute onset phase and then predominantly depression at the time of follow-up. Aspects of post traumatic stress were positively correlated with duration of mechanical ventilation which in turn was related to duration of paralysis. This challenged the hypothesis that GBS patients habituate to the experience of paralysis. Conclusion: For some individuals, GBS was experienced as a frightening event, but one that they could draw positive things from. However, for others, GBS was experienced as a traumatic event and some of these people continued to exhibit signs of psychological distress even after recovery. It remains important for staff to feel able to speak about distressing situations with their patients and to signpost them to other psychological services if appropriate.

Abstract:
Introduction: The Innovations project 15 to 25 years (IP) was a new multidisciplinary team based within an inner city area, walk-in health centre, in the North East of England (funded from January to December 2011) developed to provide a service to identify, assess and treat HTRYP. This research project draws data from the IP and compares them to data collected from a Community Mental Health Team (CMHT) in the North East of England. Aims: Initial Phase: to describe the mental health and evaluate the outcomes (mental disorder and social function) of the HTRYP who attended the IP. Phase 1: to compare the baseline demographics (Time Point 1 (TP1)) between a matched sample of IP and a sample of YP from CMHT. Phase 2: to identify and compare the indices for severity, complexity, engagement and response to treatment in a matched sample of IP and CMHT sample at TP1 and pre-discharge (TP2). Phase 3: to assess the mental state and social function of a group of individuals from the IP and CMHT samples who were retraced and agreed to be interviewed (24 months after discharge), TP3. Methods: Phase 1 and 2: a retrospective review of the clinical case notes of the YP who attended the IP (HTRYP) and CMHT was conducted. For Phase 1 the CMHT were matched to the HTRYP on age and date of discharge. The demographic characteristics of the two samples at TP1 were compared. For Phase 2 the samples were additionally matched for; gender, highest level of educational attainment and socioeconomic status. For phase 2 the focus was on severity of mental disorder and service input and change from TP1 to TP2 and between both services. Data were analysed using SPSS version 21. Phase 3 provided a follow up evaluation of the mental state and social function of YP who attended IP and CMHT (change was assessed using the Health of the Nation Outcome Scales for Child and Adolescent Mental Health (HoNOSCA) and the Children’s Global Assessment Scale (CGAS). For this phase the samples used for retracing were further matched for primary diagnosis and severity of mental disorder at TP1. Results: Forty referrals were received by the IP service from a variety of agencies. Four referrals were not appropriate. An assessment was offered to 36, five refused. Of the 31 (86%) YP who were assessed all met the criteria for HTRYP, nine repeatedly missed appointments and seven were judged not to be suffering from complex mental disorders and were signposted to local community services. 15 (48%) were then offered individually tailored therapy. In Phase 1 significant differences at TP1 were found between the 36 HTRYP and 115 CMHT samples. The IP group experienced significantly more severe deprivation (t142= -5.6, p=<0.0001), higher rates A case control and follow up study of ‘Hard to Reach’ young people who also suffered from multiple complex mental disorders v Dr Nigel Camilleri of unemployment (χ²2 =16.696, p<0.0002) and homelessness (Wx= 1, 23.812, p < 0.001) and achieved poorer educational attainment (Wx=4, 27.485, p < 0.001) compared to the CMHT sample. In Phase 2, at baseline the HTRYP (median 3, CMHT median 1, χ24= 31.58, P<0.001) had more mental disorders, higher severity scores and lower levels of social function than YP attending CMHT (HTRYP HoNOSCA mean score: 19.1 and CMHT mean score: 11.2 t91= 5.53, P= <0.001, and HTRYP CGAS mean score: 51.0, CMHT mean score 58.9, t47= -2.0, P= 0.05). In terms of service input; the clinic time offered to HTRYP (1538 minutes) was significantly greater (t100= 3.79, P= <0.001) than the CMHT sample (518 minutes). Changes in outcome measures scores between TP1 and TP2 showed that the HTRYP made significantly greater improvement compared to CMHT YP; (HoNOSCA scores t54= 4.81, P= <0.001 and the CGAS scores t20= -3.61, P= <0.002). In Phase 3, only 16 (57%) of 28 HTRYP and 23 (43%) of 54 CMHT were successfully contacted. 13 HTRYP (46%) of 28 attended the follow up review compared with 9 (17%) of 54 CMHT. These YP were shown to be representative of the target populations from which they were selected. At follow up review the HTRYP, (HoNOSCA, Wx=13, p=0.031 and CGAS Wx=13, p=0.013) showed a greater clinical improvement in mental state from TP1 to TP3 compared to YP from CMHT (HoNOSCA, Wx=9, p=0.674 and CGAS, Wx=2, p=0.655). At TP3 the CMHT YP had maintained a higher overall level of social function and had lower level of deprivation than the HTRYP. However there was great variability in terms of social function between the YP within each sample (HTRYP and CMHT). Conclusion: The IP identified a high risk group of YP. They came from more deprived backgrounds and carried more burden of mental illness compared to YP attending the CMHT. Engaging the HTRYP required more clinical hours and they received a different care package to YP who attended the CMHT. The sub-set of HTRYP who received the IP therapeutic intervention, made a significant clinical improvement when compared to the YP attending the CMHT. The findings of this study suggest that HTRYP may benefit from a flexible, individualised resource intense service that includes an outreach capability to maximise engagement, assessment and intervention planning. However the sample size was small and the resource implications for this type of clinical provision are considerable. Further clinical research is needed to investigate what might be the most resource efficient and effective in terms of ways of working with this high risk group of YP to help reduce the immediate and long term burden of mental disorders.

Wong, Yiu Tong. "An Escap-ee from French to English who will never return : A semantic and syntactic study of the -ee suffix in English."

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this paper is to investigate the semantic and syntactic properties of the -ee suffix in English. The -ee suffix was borrowed from the French ‑é suffix during the late Middle Ages, when French started to exert its linguistic influence on English. Previous research suggests that the -ee suffix in English exhibits the semantic properties of sentience, episodicity and passivity. Syntactically, the function of the -ee suffix in English may suggest ergativity. Furthermore, it has been suggested that contextual anchoring is involved in the use of the -ee suffix. I explored these characteristics of the -ee suffix by testing non‑standardised -ee suffixed nouns with the mentioned semantic and syntactic properties. The process of differentiating non‑standardised from standardised -ee suffixed nouns was done with the help of a well-established dictionary and the Internet. The results showed that sentience and episodicity applied to most -ee suffixed nouns. In addition, passivity was an important feature in the -ee nominalisation of transitive stem verbs. When the meaning of -ee suffixed nouns was complex, contextual anchoring served to facilitate the understanding of the meaning of the noun. Syntactically, the relationship between the ‑ee suffix and ergativity was weak. Thus, it can be concluded that the use of the ‑ee suffix is controlled by several semantic properties simultaneously, whereas the syntactic properties are relatively unimportant.<br>Den här uppsatsen undersöker -ee-suffixets semantiska och syntaktiska egenskaper i engelska.

Lessons learned from financial volatility trading." SFB Adaptive Information Systems and Modelling in Economics and Management Science, WU Vienna University of Economics and Business, 2000. http://epub.wu.ac.at/1680/1/document.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
In this paper we investigate the potential of the analysis of noisy non-stationary time series by quantizing it into streams of discrete symbols and applying finite-memory symbolic predictors. The main argument is that careful quantization can reduce the noise in the time series to make model estimation more amenable given limited numbers of samples that can be drawn due to the non-stationarity in the time series. As a main application area we study the use of such an analysis in a realistic setting involving financial forecasting and trading. In particular, using historical data, we simulate the trading of straddles on the financial indexes DAX and FTSE 100 on a daily basis, based on predictions of the daily volatility differences in the underlying indexes. We propose a parametric, data-driven quantization scheme which transforms temporal patterns in the series of daily volatility changes into grammatical and statistical patterns in the corresponding symbolic streams. As symbolic predictors operating on the quantized streams we use the classical fixed-order Markov models, variable memory length Markov models and a novel variation of fractal-based predictors introduced in its original form in (Tino, 2000b). The fractal-based predictors are designed to efficiently use deep memory. We compare the symbolic models with continuous techniques such as time-delay neural networks with continuous and categorical outputs, and GARCH models. Our experiments strongly suggest that the robust information reduction achieved by quantizing the real-valued time series is highly beneficial. To deal with non-stationarity in financial daily time series, we propose two techniques that combine ``sophisticated" models fitted on the training data with a fixed set of simple-minded symbolic predictors not using older (and potentially misleading) data in the training set. Experimental results show that by quantizing the volatility differences and then using symbolic predictive models, market makers can generate a statistically significant excess profit. However, with respect to our prediction and trading techniques, the option market on the DAX does seem to be efficient for traders and non-members of the stock exchange. There is a potential for traders to make an excess profit on the FTSE 100. We also mention some interesting observations regarding the memory structure in the studied series of daily volatility differences. In the context of today’s world, medical care is becoming increasingly necessary to assist patients at the end of life. It appears that this care is taking on more and more importance and is subject to fewer and fewer questions. is less and less questioned. However, confining the end of life to the state of dying and its medical support is problematic. Can the end of life be resumed as stopping hydration and artificial feeding, sedation in its different forms, euthanasia, assisted suicide, and palliative care? Can it be summed up as a simple medical question? Isn’t the end of life, first and foremost, linked to an existential question in which, at the time of our decline, we come face to face with agony? Finiteness and suffering are at the heart of our questioning as we confront life’s hardships, revealing the mystery of the flesh. With the help of Michel Henry’s philosophy, agony will gradually reveal itself as an ultimate opportunity for self-revelation. Faced with the paradox of evil, we find Man capable of coping with an effort of re-personification. This necessary effort will unfold in the metaphysical, ethical and political fields. This same effort allows Man to take responsibility for himself and to contemplate existential questions. The subjectivity of each person must become the center of the healthcare institution. Agony becomes the possibility to rethink the place of the individual person within the hospital system: the care giver, the care receiver and those supporting them, all while developing an ethical personal assistance which must then translated into policies. Because even if metaphysically, living out agony cannot be otherwise justified but by Love, ethically we must build a new way of operating. We must leave room for fraternity as a consequence of being of the flesh, to imagination in order to respond to our fellow man and our life’s calling, and to subsidiarity so that everyone is respected in his actions and consciousness. Politically, it opens up the possibility of a hospital system respectful of each "I Can" which is echoed within its walls. Respect for the patient's consent remains the cornerstone of the hospital system but can only be built with an alliance with caregivers

Eleine Mad is Madeleine Jacobsson's spokesperson for the scientific and paranormal discoveries that arise in her worlds. She describes content, tecniques and aesthetics based on a categorization system where art is divided into different types of components and then decoded as they go. To understand the intuition's involvement in the work process, it is transformed into three separate roles by a Seeker, Collector and a Myntare(In swedish language the one who is a "myntare" -is verbally declaring a concept or term). With these roles I try to describe in what ways intuition is beneficial or devastating to the artistic work. The story of M is about a frog-like character, Delop, who leaves the home planet to seek out other worlds. In her search, Delop finds a world whose views and lifestyles differ from her experiences of "reality" as she learned to survive in it.<br><p>Recorded sound and image material of the presentation is available for private use.</p>

De, Langen Agnes Ntlaletse. "Nurses' opinion of pain in patients who suffer from dementia." Diss., 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/1796.

Abstract:
Ageing is a process that starts from the moment of conception. It is accompanied by gradual impairment of body functions rendering the elderly less active socially as well as physically as a result of organ failure and compromised immunity system, leading to physical illness that may cause pain as well as mental illness such as dementia. In the United Kingdom majority of elderly people suffers from dementia and are cared for by nurses in the nursing homes. Patients with dementia experience pain as a result of other co- morbidities such as arthritis, but may be undiagnosed and therefore under-treated due to change in their behaviour. Inability to express pain causes concern to the nurse who provides care to the patient. Although some consequences of ineffective pain management have been evaluated, the question of nurses' opinions of pain experience in patients who suffer from dementia has, according to the extensive literature search done by the researcher, not been investigated. The purpose of this study is to describe and explore nurses' opinion of pain in patients suffering from dementia. The researcher adopted a qualitative approach to capture the participants' experiences and opinions of the nurses. A non-experimental qualitative research approach which is exploratory-descriptive and contextual in nature guided the researcher to explore and describe the nurses' opinion of pain in patients who suffer from dementia. Structured interviews and focus group discussions were conducted with seven participants involved in elderly care delivery. Biographical data were analysed and presented using descriptive statistics. The program for qualitative data analysis guided the process of categorizing and coding the data.<br>Health Studies<br>M.A. (Health Studies)

Lau, Yea-Yan, and 劉雅燕. "Trend, medical resources utilization and survival of thalassemia major suffer from anxiety or depression disorders." Thesis, 2015. http://ndltd.ncl.edu.tw/handle/6d3nq4.

Full text
Abstract:
碩士<br>高雄醫學大學<br>醫務管理暨醫療資訊學系碩士在職專班<br>103<br>Objective: Thalassemia is the most common hereditary disease: α-Thalassemia is found in 4% of Taiwan’s overall population while β-Thalassemia is present in 1.1% of the population. Current treatment of this disease not only impacts society’s resources, but also affects the mental and well-being of a family. Therefore, the purpose of this study is comprised of the following three areas: 1.To investigate the trend and correlation factors associated with thalassemia; 2.To investigate the relationship between anxiety or depressive disorders with regards to thalsse-mia; 3.To investigate the relationship between anxiety or depressive disorders associated with tha-lassemia and the impact on social medical resources. Methods: The study utilized the National Health Insurance Research Database report released by the National Institute of Health (NIH) and information collected from one million in- and out-patient subjects over the years from 1996 to 2010. During this study period, a total of 798,823 patients with thalassemia major were recruited into the study. The SPSS Version 20.0 for Windows was used for descriptive statistical analysis (determining the mean, standard deviation, distribution and incidence), inferential statistical analysis (including the Chi-square test, student’s t-test, logistic regression model analysis, ES analysis, GEE analysis and K-M survival analysis) and other statistic methods. Results: Females suffering from thalassemia increased in numbers from 57.1% in 1996 to 65.0% in 2010. The average age was 34, with ages 18-64 making up the majority of 3.371 (72.4%) sufferers. There was a significant increase from 42.9% during 1996 to 76.1% at 2010. The greatest percentage was CCI=0 (making up 87.8%) and patients with diabetes, which accounted for 9.1%. The study saw an increase in the prevalence of the disease from 0.24 per population of hundred thousand in 1996 to 2.12 per population in 2002. This number decreased the ensuing years to 0.78 per population in 2010 (P < 0.001). Patients suffering from anxiety or depressive disorder accounted for 826 cases (17.7), which saw a decrease from 22.4% in 1996 to 4.4% in 2010. Rates were highest in medical institutions, especially when tested in medical centres, with a survival rate of 4,224 cases (90.7%). This increased from 75.5% in 1996 to 94.4% in 2010. Secondly, the variables believed to be associated with thalassemia and anxiety or depressive disorders (such as demographic characteristics, clinical differences and varying trends throughout periods of time) were compared using PSM analysis to determine what factors were significantly different for thalassemia and anxiety or depressive disorders. The study found that the sex, age, amount of medical and physician services as well as the hospital rating played a significant differ-ence in the study (P < 0.001). Thirdly, in regards to the amount of community resources spent, the study showed that the outpatient cost, hospitalization cost, amount of outpatient visits and amount of days spent at the hospital were greater for patients that had anxiety or depressive disorders than those who did not. Furthermore, the average cost for hospitalization, outpatient visits and length of hospital stay for patients with anxiety or depressive disorders was found to increase over time. The average number of hospitalizations and number of outpatient visits for patients with anxiety or depressive disorders was found to decrease over time. Fourthly, the study shows that survival rates for patients that have anxiety or depressive disorders, the mean survival rate after diagnosis is 72.0±4.5 months, whereas the rate is 41.1±3.9 months for patients without anxiety or depressive disorders. The length of survival for patients with anxiety or depressive disorders is longer than those without. For patients with anxiety or depressive disorders, the rate of survival for the first year was 97.1%, 89.9% for the second year and 79.7% for the third year (P < 0.001). Relatively, for patients without anxiety or depressive disorders, the rate of survival was 71.6% for the first year, 58% for the second year and 49.4% for the third year (P < 0.001). There was a significant difference in survival rates between the two groups. Discussion and suggestion: Between the years 1996 to 2002, there was a significant increase in prevalence of thalassemia, however, the trend decreased from the years 2002 to 2010. Patients with anxiety and depressive disorders utilized more of society’s medical resources, which this was shown to slightly improve over time. The same patients also had longer survivals than patients without anxiety or depressive disorders. Following the results of this study, the author suggests to monitor the advances of medicine and shifting social dynamics. Healthcare providers are advised to continue ensure that proper care and treatment is given to patients and their families to create the best situation possible.

Abstract:
碩士<br>臺北市立大學<br>視覺藝術學系<br>107<br>This research attempts to explore the creative process of “Black Hole Messages: Stories and Paintings for Those Who Suffer From Depression”- through the art-based research method. This research records the changes and perception of the interaction between “artistic expression” and “psychological experience” of the creator, presenting the process of creative concept development. It further overcomes the bottleneck of creation by combining the creator’s multiple learning experience of “artistic creation” and “Art therapy”. The series of creative work, “Black Hole Messages: Stories and Paintings for Those Who Suffer From Depression,” focuses on “Depression”. In this fictional production, the creator combines the form of text with visual creations to present the correlation between “Depression” and “life history”. This creative work also reveals the creator's personal empathy and care toward people who suffer from depression. The inspiration comes from the creator’s art therapy practice in the Psychiatry Department of Hospital, as well as the creator’s personal experience of accompanying others in the doldrums and perceiving the creator’s own psychological plight. Through the exploration of this creative process, the researcher has realized that, using the psychosocial issue as creation subject can also be a test of the creator’s understanding and acceptance to his or her own relevant internal experiences, the creator’s empathy and care toward others, the creator’s trust and willingness to devote deep emotions to the creative process, and the creator’s openness and ability to look at issues from different perspective. Furthermore, creation with sincerity and kind intention will help break, the boundaries of reality. It can connect “the creator”, “the audiences”, and “the people whom the creative work closely focuses on”, providing everyone a possibility of "accepting oneself, understanding others, and responding to each other".

Liebenberg, Tersia. "A psychiatric case management approach to facilitate the mental health of women that suffer from depression." Thesis, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10210/4197.

Full text
Abstract:
D.Cur.<br>In South Africa, mood disorders, specifically depression, accounts for the most psychiatric related hospital admissions. The total cost (overt and hidden) of mood disorders that result from lost productivity, can be estimated at billions of rand per year. In addition to economic costs, depression can carry great personal costs because of the social stigma associated with the diagnosis and treatment of a 'mental illness'. This stigma likely plays a big role in women' reluctance to seek, accept and adhere to treatment. The potential savings to be derived from the appropriate treatment of women suffering from depression are socially and economically significant. The focus in this thesis has been on women suffering from depression as it is estimated that at least twenty five percent of women will suffer from a major depressive episode in their life. Based on the problem statement that was included in this thesis, the researcher asked the following questions: 'What is the phenomena that constitutes the restoration process of women suffering from depression? Which processes contribute to the restoration process of women suffering from depression and facilitate these women's quest for mental health as an integral part of wholeness? How can an approach to provide quality care to women suffering from depression be described?" The primary purpose of this thesis was thus to explore and describe the processes contributing to the restoration process of women suffering from depression, in order to develop a mental health nursing approach that will provide quality care to women suffering from depression in their continuous quest for mental health. The psychiatric nurse specialist then developed and described guidelines to operationalise the approach that contributes to quality care of women suffering from depression in mental health nursing. The paradigmatic basis of this study was based on the Nursing for the Whole Person Theory (Oral Roberts University, Anna Vaughn School of Nursing, 1990:136-142) as used by the Rand Afrikaans University. This theory is based on a Judea-Christian philosophy.

Du, Plessis Ina. "The effect of chiropractic cervical spine adjustments in patients who suffer from an anterior head carriage posture." Thesis, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10210/3720.

Full text
Abstract:
M.Tech.<br>The purpose of this study is to determine whether adjusting the relevant restricted segments of the cervical spine is effective in successfully reducing an anterior head carriage posture. Method: Thirty participants underwent a general screening to determine whether they have an anterior head carriage posture. The general screening was done by using a plumb line that hung from a roof. If the plumb line revealed that the external auditory meatus was anterior to the acromioclavicular joint, the participant was suitable for this study. Each participant underwent an X-ray screening session in order to measure the degree of the cervical lordosis. This was done by determining the angle of cervical curve, measured on a lateral cervical X-ray. Each participant received chiropractic spinal adjustive therapy to the restricted cervical facet joints. After the eight week trial, the participants underwent a second X-ray screening session in order to re-measure the degree of cervical lordosis. Results: The results obtained were statistically significant with p=0.016 (p<0.05). The mean value of the cervical lordosis for the group as a whole showed a decrease in the cervical lordosis from 50.90 degrees before treatment to 48.67° after treatment. Evident from these results the anterior head carriage was reduced by 2.23° for the group as a whole. Conclusion: From this research design, it can be deduced that Chiropractic spinal adjustive therapy to the relevant restricted segments can have a beneficial effect in reducing an anterior head carriage posture. As there was no control group, it is not possible to rule out the placebo effect.

Abstract:
M.Ed. (Psychology of Education)<br>Because of its prevalence, depression has been described as a common cold in communities all over the world. Thus, the primary purpose of this research study was to provide guidelines and support to help late adolescent boys suffering from non-clinical depression. The objective of this research had been successfully achieved. The late adolescent boys who were interviewed were identified by their educators and their peers as non-clinical depressed. The data were collected by means of observation and phenomenological interviews. The researcher followed a qualitative, explorative, descriptive and contextual method. In the second chapter the researcher describes the research design and method of the research. The approach to data collection, analysis and report writing to achieve the goal of this research study are also indicated. The third chapter deals with the phenomenological interviews that were conducted and the central themes that have been identified and categorised. The fourth chapter indicates guidelines to help and support late adolescent boys suffering from non-clinical depression. The research ensured trustworthiness to the participants during the research process. The researcher gained the confidence of the participants by spending time with them informally. The researcher ensured credibility of the research study by audio-taping the interviews conducted with the participants. Thereafter, the independent coder was given the transcribed interviews. Thereafter a consensus discussion was held with the independent coder. The researcher ensured that the research study was credible, transferable, dependable and confirmable. Ethical measures were also applied throughout the research. The researcher ensured that the participants would not be harmed, either physical or emotionally. The researcher ensured the participants of their anonymity. He did this by giving the participants pseudonyms and he made sure that the setting was not identifiable. Ethical measures were also applied throughout the research. The researcher ensured that the participants would not be harmed, either physical or emotionally. The researcher ensured the participants of their anonymity. He did this by giving the participants pseudonyms and he made sure that the setting was not identifiable. The participants were also informed about the advantages and disadvantages of participating in the research. The researcher received informed consent from the parents of the participants and from the principals of the schools where some of the interviews were conducted. He also obtained assent from the participants. All participants were informed about their privacy, benefits, withdrawal and the procedure to be followed. The researcher found late adolescent boys experience positive and negative challenges concerning non-clinical depression. They also experience role conflict related to their home circumstances and that conversation with others help keep depression at bay. The researcher found that the causes of nonclinical depression of late adolescent boys are poor family relationships and dysfunctional families. Guidelines were deducted from these results.

Van, Lingen Caroline. "A study to determine if the prevalence of spinal joint dysfunctions are influenced by whether or not infants suffer from infantile colic." Thesis, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10321/176.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (M.Tech.:Chiropractic)-Dept. of Chiropractic, Durban Institute of Technology, 2003 163 leaves<br>Wessel et al. (1954) described the most accepted definition of infantile colic as, “Unexplainable and uncontrolled crying in babies from 0 to 3 months old”. The authors qualify their definition further by stating that the crying occurs for more than 3 hours a day, more than 3 days a week, for 3 weeks or more, usually in the afternoon and evening hours. Although this definition is old, it is the most widely recognized definition to date and is still used by authors (Canivet et al. 1996; Lindberg 1999; Wiberg et al. 1999; Lindberg 2000 and Sondergaard et al. 2000). Infantile colic is an idiopathic condition, with much debate about its aetiology and treatment (Pineyard 1992). It presents as excessive crying in an otherwise healthy infant who has a normal weight gain (Wiberg et al. 1999; Olafsdottir et al. 2001) and is one of the most frequent problems presented to paediatricians by new parents (Barr 1998). Furthermore, it is a self-limiting and benign condition with approximately 47% of cases resolving at 3 months, a further 41% resolving between 3 and 6 months, and the remaining 12% resolving between 6 and 12 months (Hide and Guyer 1982). Approximately 10 to 20% of infants under the age of three months suffer from infantile colic (Becker et al. 1998) and less than 5% of colicky infants suffer from organic diseases (Barr 1998). The diagnosis of infantile colic is arrived at by the method of exclusion, completing a thorough history and physical examination to rule out any possible serious illness or infection that may be present (Balon 1997). Lissauer and Clayden (1997: 126) noted that there is no firm evidence that the causative mechanism of infantile colic may be attributed to intestinal, biliary or renal causes. The authors further stipulated that cow’s milk intolerance and gasto-oesphageal reflux are seldom responsible. Effective treatment and management of infantile colic is necessary as the difficulties associated with inconsolable crying may persist and although infantile colic is not detrimental to an infant's health, it places tremendous stress on the family (Balon 1997). Moderate to severe cases of infantile colic, as stated by Lund et al. (1998), may involve uncontrollable crying for many hours during day and night, every day. The authors noted that it is destructive to infant and family, as there is a risk that the condition may negatively affect the mother-child bond after three months (Becker et al. 1998) and result in the infant sustaining non-accidental injury (Lissauer and Clayden 1997: 126). In view of the fact that infantile colic responded favourably to spinal manipulation, Wiberg et al. (1999) suggested that the discomfort and colicky symptoms of infantile colic might have a musculoskeletal origin rather than the assumed yet unproven gastrointestinal origin. This hypothesis is supported by the effective treatment response observed in spinal manipulative studies on infantile colic (Wiberg et al. 1999). It leads to the suggestion that either spinal manipulation may be useful in treating visceral disorders, as spinal manipulation has been postulated to cause somatovisceral spinal reflexes (Gatterman 1990: 204), or that infantile colic may be a musculoskeletal disorder, which may explain why spinal manipulation is effective in treating infantile colic. The motion palpation of infants’ spines remains controversial (Volkening 2000). Extensive literature searches have not revealed studies that have ascertained if spinal joint dysfunctions are responsible for the colicky symptoms. The observed clinical improvement (which was noted as a decrease in crying time of the infants) of the treatment groups has lead to the conclusion that removal of spinal joint dysfunctions may play a large part in the alleviation of symptoms of infantile colic (Klougart et al. 1989; Mercer 1999: 39; Wiberg et al. 1999). In studies by Klougart et al. (1989), Mercer (1999:15), Wiberg et al. (1999), only infants suffering from infantile colic were included, therefore it is yet to be determined whether symptoms seen in infants suffering from infantile colic, possibly as a result of spinal joint dysfunction, also occur in healthy infants with no symptoms of infantile colic. As mentioned by Gottlieb (1993), manual assessment of spinal joint dysfunctions in infants is well within the means of current practice in spinal manipulation and will be beneficial, as it may help to determine if there is a correlation between spinal joint dysfunctions and the prevalence of infantile colic. This study may result in more effective diagnosis and management of this benign, yet distressing condition. The purpose of the study is to determine if the prevalence of spinal joint dysfunctions is influenced by whether or not infants suffer from infantile colic.

It mainly focuses on the intervention and evaluation for family reunification, the experience of dilemmas and effective resolution strategies, and the interdisciplinary cooperation, which lead to the successful accomplishment of family reunification. This study adopted the research method which is based on constructivist grounded theory with qualitative analysis, and conducted semi-structured in-depth interviews. A total of 14 counseling psychologists and 13 social workers were invited to participate in this study. Research results reveal that: 1. The experience of family reunification for those who suffered from intra-family sexual abuse included the forming and execution of an intervention plan, the evaluation orientations of family reunification, the staged intervention process and respective work focuses; 2. practical dilemmas included the limits of children’s ability, failure in reducing the perpetrator’s risk factors, the judiciary’s influence on family reunification, the difficulty in changing the family of origin, the limited performance of intervention and monitoring work, and the difficulty in linking and consolidating resources; 3. strategies for coping with the dilemmas include enhancing internal connections within family, inducing systematic change, presenting judicial impartiality, intensifying evaluations and interventions before and after the concerned person returned home, and devising proper measures to match individual conditions; 4. the experience of interdisciplinary cooperation is mostly characterized by professional responsibility assignment, interdisciplinary interdependence, mutual benefit, and reciprocity. Based on the research results, an ecosystem-interactive model of family reunification is recommended for counseling psychologists and social workers to help children having suffered from intra-family sexual abuse. In this model, a family-based progressive work approach is adopted, which is rooted in the foundation of family resilience and the strength approach. Through interdisciplinary cooperation, counseling psychologists and social workers offer help to the victims of intra-family sexual abuse and intervene in their families. Assistance is also given to make connection with the external ecosystem, so as to build an ecosystem-interactive partnership. Finally, the research results are discussed and recommendations for practical work and future studies are proposed in this study.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立中興大學<br>水土保持學系所<br>98<br>According to analyzed over past 100-year’s meteorological data, Central Weather Bureau indicated that average temperature is on the rise everywhere and climate changes extraordinary causing storms, flooding and droughts occurred frequently. Typhoon Morakot carried torrential rain struck Taiwan in 2009, and the daily rainfall in most of southern Taiwan up to 200-return period caused several landslide calamities. It is a vital recovery task to realize the landslide status and assess dredging priority of creek section suffered from Typhoon Morakot. A-li-shan Creek, tributary of Qing-shui Creek, is used as the experimental site to calculate the sediment yield of each river section divided by the intersections of main stream and tributaries. Sediment yield in each river section is estimated by the amount of watershed debris delivery, which involves yields of soil loss and landslide. Universal soil loss equation, Khazai and Sitar modified method and the concepts of sediment delivery ratio were all applied in this study to explore the dredging priority of creek section under consideration of security objects for the reference of watershed planning and management. Results show that tremendous landslides occurred in the interested watershed during the strike of Typhoon Morakot. The total amount of landslide volume is about 3.891x107 m3 and the potential sediment yield is 3.635 x107 m3 in the watershed. Section #C04-C05 along main stream shows the most serious deposition, section #T08 at the Ke-zai-lin Creek contributes the most debris volume to main stream. The dredging priority of creek section is # C10-C11, # C08-C09 and/or #C04-C05, and # C09-C10 in order calculated from the weighting of potential sediment yield and security objects.

Bloom, Lance C. "Control and organization in primary memory: Evidence from suffix effects." Thesis, 1999. http://hdl.handle.net/1911/19355.

Full text
Abstract:
This investigation is concerned with the control and organization of the "psychological present," or primary memory, and specifically with the implications of such control and organization for the suffix effect. The suffix effect arises when a nominally irrelevant speech item, or "suffix," is appended to a spoken sequence of items, and it consists of an impairment in the recall of the most recent items in the sequence, especially the last item (e.g., Crowder, 1967; Dallett, 1965). The dominant explanation of the suffix effect has been in terms of "bottom-up" masking in general (e.g., Nairne, 1990) and precategorical acoustic masking in particular (e.g., Crowder & Morton, 1969; Crowder, 1978, 1983; Greene & Crowder, 1984). The current version of this explanation is "two-component" theory, wherein the precategorical masking explanation is confined to the terminal component of the suffix effect (i.e., at the last position of the sequence), with the preterminal component being open to influences of top-down or conceptually-based interpretation and strategy (see Greene, 1992 for a review). Reported here are 12 experiments, each of which provides evidence inconsistent with two-component theory. Experiments 1--4 failed to replicate the principal findings proffered in support of the theory; Experiments 5--11 extended some of the findings of the first four experiments by showing additional evidence of postcategorical influences on the terminal suffix effect; and Experiment 12 demonstrated a suffix effect with static visual presentation. These findings, and indeed those in the suffix effect literature in general, are interpreted along the lines of the now largely ignored perceptual grouping account proposed by Kahneman (1973; Kahneman & Henik, 1981).

Hsieh, Hsinchuo, and 謝昕倬. "The Restoration Process of Victims Suffered from Bereavement Due to Criminal Incidents." Thesis, 2011. http://ndltd.ncl.edu.tw/handle/86708693923465704176.

Full text
Abstract:
碩士<br>國立臺北大學<br>犯罪學研究所<br>99<br>This study adopted a qualitative approach to explore the restoration process of bereavement victims. Six semi-structured face-to-face interviews with seven victims who lost their close family members in criminal incidents were conducted. Their life stories after the tragic incidents were told and recorded. These narratives were further analyzed by, firstly, describing their coping mechanisms and daily dealings with constant emotional sufferings and; secondly, exploring their renewed interpretation and transformation of these events. This study identified five restoration phrases. Each of the stage had different issues, emotional reactions, and coping strategies. They were acute shock phase, handling matters related to the funeral phase, re-integration phase, judicial process phase, and follow-up adjustments phase. The interviewees' restoration process was generally consistent with existing literature and evidence on adaptation theory of bereavement grief. Nevertheless, the interviewees mentioned that having to face the offender and judicial procedure complicated their adjustment process. They were frustrated because of negative interactions with the offenders, who rarely showed any remorse or sincerity. There were rare cases both parties could communicate with each other under a genuine, equal, and rational atmosphere. They often went through a lengthy judicial process with little, if any, feedback from the court to respond their emotional and psychological needs. The victims interviewed went through different recovery period, depending on the event impact and support network. In spite of the variance, they shared some characteristics. They often had sufficient social resources. During the journal of recovery, they gradually developed positive interpretation toward the tragic events. In addition, they grew to appreciate the value of individual life course. At the end, four suggestions on future support for bereavement victims are proposed: Firstly, there should be continuing official support from governmental and civil agencies. Secondly, it is important to create a supporting environment to allow bereavement victims expressing their feelings during addressing their stories. Thirdly, it is suggested that an organization or support group for bereavement victims be organized to create a forum for sharing experience and self help. Finally, the main role of criminal justice agency should be focused on reducing the sense of re-victimization through the judicial process by creating a more balanced and victim sensitive criminal justice system.

Abstract:
碩士<br>南華大學<br>生死學研究所<br>94<br>The main purpose of this research is to explore the sickness experience of medical professionals who fall ill with cancer and are confronted with death .The researcher approaches this issue with methods based on Hermeneutical Phenomenology and the body ontology of Merleau-Ponty as the meta-theory, to analyze the description of three participants'' sickness experience. The change of the patients'' corporeal schema caused by the intrusion of disease and the subjective sensational experience of being ill, are both undescribable inner perception especially the shift of the sense of time and space which happens to a cancer patient when facing his death. Beside, it is also under observation how much realization of patients'' suffering can come to the mind of such medical professionals, who get close to patients every day and observe the physical and mental damage done by the disease. This research takes the viewpoint of the double identity of the medical professionals who are sick. They reveal the different observations which happen between fatal patients who go through chaotic physical and sensational perception, and those clinical medical care-takers, so as to reflect upon the essential caring of nurse.

Huang, Shu-Chien, and 黃婌倩. "Exploring influencing factors of psychological health in women who suffered from intimate partner violence." Thesis, 2011. http://ndltd.ncl.edu.tw/handle/90549416087363285472.

Full text
Abstract:
碩士<br>國立臺北護理健康大學<br>護理研究所<br>99<br>Background: Intimate partner violence is the most common type of domestic violence and has huge impacts on victims’ physical and psychological health. Intimate partner violence can cause serious depression and post-trauma stress disorder (PTSD) in the victims and can also affect their families’ quality of life greatly. If we can be more aware of the influencing factors of these womens’ psychological health, we may be able toprovide better help for them. Object: The purpose of study is to explore influencing factors of psychological health in women who suffered from intimate partner violence. Methods: This study was a descriptive correlational design and cross-sectional data was collected using questionnaires. A convenience sample of 108 battered women was recruited from a women foundation and a medical center in Taiwan. The study questionnaires included questions on demographics, Danger Assessment (DA) Scale, Social Support Sacle, CES-D and Davidson Trauma Scale. Data were collected from January 2010 to December 2010. Descriptive statistics, T-test, one way analysis of variance, Pearson Product Moment correlation coefficient, hierarchical regression and sobel test were applied to explore clients’ psychological health and its related factors. Result: The average scores of depression and PTSD were 25.2 (SD=9.6) and 67.8 (SD=34.1), respectively. Among the 108 participants, 31 (28.7%) of them had major depression, and 75 (69.4%) of them had a PTSD. The severity of PTSD was associated with age and work status The level of intimate partner violence risk was positively associated with the severity of PTSD (r=0.54, p<0.01) and the degress of depression (r=0.43, p<0.01). In addition, the level of PTSD was positively associated with the degree of depression among these women. The Sobel test showed that PTSD was a mediator between the level of intimate partner violence risk and depression and had a 88.3 precent mediating effect. Results of hierarchical regressions showed that DA was a important predictor of PTSD and PTSD was a important predictor of depression in women who suffered from intimate violence. Conclusion:The intimate partner violence women are staying in the higher risk environment and encounter more serious of depression and PTSD in this research. We hope that the result can help health care providers to understand mental health status of intimate partner violence women and provide information for further treatment strategies for intimate partner violence women.
