Abstract:
The Polish draft horse (PDH) breed is a result of crossing local mares with imported cold-blooded stallions, such as Belgians, Ardennes, Fjords, and others. A part of the broodmare stock investigated in this study was also imported from various countries, such as Denmark. In this study, we investigate the genetic composition of the PDH by analyzing the whole mitochondrial d-loop variability and comparing it to previously demonstrated whole d-loop sequences of other cold-blooded breeds: Ardennais, Belgian, Breton, Clydesdale, Noriker, Norwegian Fjord, Percheron, and Suffolk. Our results show hi

The ideal aim of rewilding is to restore natural processes to create ‘self-willed’ ecosystems involving the creation of large areas of habitat subject to stochastic disturbance, connected by favorable corridors for species to disperse along. Reversion of arable farmland to grassland and scrub habitats on Black Bourn Valley nature reserve in Suffolk (south-east England) through non-intervention allowed succession to occur largely unmanaged. Fields in the early stages of rewilding (4–14 years) are found at Black Bourn Valley, while pond creation has been extensive since 2010, creating water edge

Abstract:
The textual history of The Book of the Duchess challenges many spurious traditions encouraged by the apparently disordered state of Chaucer’s texts on his death. The lack of contemporary references casts doubt on whether the poem was circulated in the fourteenth century or commissioned by John of Gaunt as an elegy for his wife. The first witnesses, in three mid-fifteenth-century manuscripts, contain substantial lacunae, ‘resolved’ in Thynne’s printed edition of 1532. This article examines Bodleian MS Fairfax 16, which bears the arms of John Stanley of Hooton, a leading court functionary from a

ABSTRACTA study of a sample of hipparion teeth from Pliocene marine fossil deposits in Suffolk revealed two species, belonging to different genera of these three-toed horses. Hipparion sp. (of the H. crassum Group) and Proboscidipparion sp. have different stratigraphic ranges on the European continent. Their stratigraphic origin in the Suffolk deposits is discussed, based on a review of the occurrence of similar forms on the European continent.

Abstract:
Theodred, bishop of London, who also held episcopal authority in Suffolk and Norfolk, drew up a statement in the 940s of how he intended to leave his property after his death. Despite his German name, he was probably a native of Suffolk, for he bequeathed a number of Suffolk lands to close relatives living in the region. His most generous bequests were to his cathedral church of St Paul in London, but he made a substantial grant of four estates in Suffolk to the church of St Edmund. Theodred’s will provides one of the earliest datable references to the existence of a religious household charge

Abstract:
Abstract On A Warm July Day in 1615, John Winthrop sat nervously astride his horse on the road to Bury St. Edmunds. He was there with some of the country ‘s leading citizens, awaiting the arrival of the king ‘s justices who had been appointed to preside over the assize sessions. Just a month earlier he had been named to the Suffolk commission of the peace. Accompanied by pikemen, and with trumpeters announcing their progress, Winthrop, his fellow county justices, the county sheriff, and the sheriff ‘s bailiff were present to escort the assize judges to the town. All justices of the peace were
