Studies were undertaken to determine the effects of fertilizer and liming materials on soil and fine root chemistry and fine root biomass, and on the starch content of larger diameter sugar maple (Acer saccharum Marsh.) roots. Responses in fine root biomass, fine root chemistry, and soil chemistry were observed using root-free ingrowth cores containing an organic based fertilizer (3-4-8 plus dolomitic limestone at a rate of 800 kg/ha), an inorganic fertilizer (0-3-29 plus calcite and dolomite at a rate of 1370 kg/ha), or no fertilizer. Three sugarbushes were selected for the study of root distribution. Saint-Hippolyte was the best site for the distribution and production of fine roots. A high water-table and an abrupt change in texture limited the extension of the root system to the top 40 cm at the Vaudreuil site. In Tingwick, an acid mineral B horizon with a low Ca saturation restricted the production of fine roots in that horizon.<br>A sugarbush in Norbertville was used as a replacement for the Vaudreuil site for the study on root chemistry. The effect of fruit removal from cantaloupe was studied under field conditions in a soil naturally infested with Monosporascus cannonballus. Fruit removal resulted in greater sugar accumulation in the cantaloupe roots compared to the roots from plants on which the fruits were allowed to develop normally. Individual, total, and combined root carbohydrate levels were greater in plants without fruit than in plants with fruit. A compost consisting 95% of the sugar mill byproducts: bagasse, filter press mud, and fly ash, applied at 5 t ha$ sp{-1}$, increased vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal infection of sugarcane roots in one of three experimental fields in Barbados. Devido ao baixo teor alcoólico do vinho (8 a 10 % v v-1), para cada litro de etanol produzido são gerados de 10 a 12 litros de vinhaça.
