Abstract:
The interest in using sugarcane straw as a feedstock for bioenergy production has been increased considerably. However, indiscriminate straw removal may negatively affect soil functioning. Therefore, this work aimed to quantify and characterize soil solution translocating along the profile, under straw removal rates from the soil surface. Lysimeter systems were built with 1, 20, 50, and 100 cm soil columns, with a sandy clay loam texture, from a commercial sugarcane field in Piracicaba-SP, southeastern Brazil. The experiment was conducted in open area, where the lysimeters were subjected to ra

A computer model was developed in order to determine the effects of drainage practices on nutrient losses from level agricultural soils. The model performs a daily simulation of the vertical flow of water, nitrogen, phosphorus, and heat, and of the growth of crops. A water flow submodel calculates the depth of the water table based on daily predictions of evaporation, transpiration, flow to drains and ditches, and deep percolation. Although silicon (Si) has not yet been recognized as an essential nutrient element, its application to sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum L.) has proved to be beneficial. Since optimum crop production depends on the maintenance of adequate plant nutrients in the soil, there is a need in the South African sugar industry for a reliable index for assessing the requirement for supplemental silicon (Si) in soils, particularly in reducing the risk of Eldana saccharina stalk borer infestation in cane. The objective of this study was to assess Si availability in soils, to select a suitable Si extraction

Consequently, concerns about the water use of other dryland crops have lead to a need to quantify water use by other land uses, particularly sugarcane. In this document, previous re

The soils used by the East Coast Organic Producers Trust (ECOPT; the grower group that this study is targeted towards) have exceptionally low soil Olsen P concentrations (ca. 6 mg/L). These and other limitations (e.g. poor weed and pest and disease control) result in many ECOPT growers being unable to produce economic yields on anything other than small scale gardens. Fertilisers and manures are seldom used by these growers, which exacerbates the problem. Thus, the object of this research was to provide information to ECOPT on which fertilisers and application strategies would provide the best
