Abstract:
AbstractOur mathematical model of epithelial transport (Larsen et al. Acta Physiol. 195:171–186, 2009) is extended by equations for currents and conductance of apical SGLT2. With independent variables of the physiological parameter space, the model reproduces intracellular solute concentrations, ion and water fluxes, and electrophysiology of proximal convoluted tubule. The following were shown: Water flux is given by active Na+ flux into lateral spaces, while osmolarity of absorbed fluid depends on osmotic permeability of apical membranes. Following aquaporin “knock-out,” water uptake is not reduced but redirected to the paracellular pathway. Reported decrease in epithelial water uptake in aquaporin-1 knock-out mouse is caused by downregulation of active Na+ absorption. Luminal glucose stimulates Na+ uptake by instantaneous depolarization-induced pump activity (“cross-talk”) and delayed stimulation because of slow rise in intracellular [Na+]. Rate of fluid absorption and flux of active K+ absorption would have to be attuned at epithelial cell level for the [K+] of the absorbate being in the physiological range of interstitial [K+]. Following unilateral osmotic perturbation, time course of water fluxes between intraepithelial compartments provides physical explanation for the transepithelial osmotic permeability being orders of magnitude smaller than cell membranes’ osmotic permeability. Fluid absorption is always hyperosmotic to bath. Deviation from isosmotic absorption is increased in presence of glucose contrasting experimental studies showing isosmotic transport being independent of glucose uptake. For achieving isosmotic transport, the cost of Na+ recirculation is predicted to be but a few percent of the energy consumption of Na+/K+ pumps.

Abstract:
The expression “lifestyles” describes several expressed behaviors, usually in the form of consumption and behaviors patterns, which characterizes how an individual or group fits into society. Although, with the advancement of science and the facilitation of human tasks in the daily living, there is a reduction in mortality from infectious diseases and an increase in longevity, however the appearance of chronic-degenerative diseases that negatively affect the quality of life have been found when some behaviors, defined as “good” lifestyles are not considered. The lifestyles could be defined as a set of mediating structures that reflect a totality of activities, attitudes and social values closely related and that depend on economic and social conditions, education, age, among other factors. It manifests historical and cultural experiences and emerges from a set of decisions, over which the subject assumes control, thus, the lifestyle is revealed to be fundamental in the promotion and protection of health. This chapter intends to describe how healthy lifestyles could be considered adequate through our living period since young ages, maintaining and distinguishing them during adulthood and making them useful in older ages.

Abstract:
Earth’s physical landscapes are framed initially by tectonism, reshaped by climate, garnished by plants and animals, and modified by human activity. Tectonism constructs the physical framework of the continents and ocean floors. Climate, the synthesis of weather, generates the surface processes that reshape this framework through erosion and sedimentation, and also provides the conditions necessary to support life. In various guises, tectonism and climate have played these roles from early in Earth history, although 90% of Earth time had passed before the continents began to acquire vascular plants and land animals. However, because Earth’s crust is ponderously mobile and climate depends ultimately on the variable receipt of solar radiation, tectonic and climatic forcing vary across time and space. Consequently, continents come to acquire distinctive suites of landscapes that reflect changing locational, tectonic, climatic, and biotic influences over time. South America exemplifies this concept—a continent whose distinctive qualities owe much to the roles played by tectonism and climate over time, including their impacts on landforms and biota. Tectonism and climate are interactive forces. By determining the distribution and shape of land masses and ocean basins, tectonism influences the relative importance of continentality and oceanicity to climate. Over time, tectonism also influences climate change by promoting uplift favorable to prolonged cooling and perhaps glaciation, by opening and closing seaways to ocean circulation, and by influencing atmospheric composition by the generation and consumption of crustal rocks. Though more subtle, climate may in turn affect tectonism by redistributing continental mass through erosion and deposition, thereby generating isostatic adjustments to crustal loading and unloading. Tectonism also influences plant and animal distributions directly, for example by providing linkages or barriers to migration, while climate and biota are intimately linked in the biome concept and the feedback effect of biomes on climatic processes. This chapter examines the interactive roles of tectonism and climate in changing the South American landscape over the 200 million years that have passed since the initial breakup of Pangea. It then discusses the implications of these changes for geomorphology and biogeography, and concludes with a brief evaluation of the pace of landscape change.

Abstract:
The consumption of nuts as part of a healthy diet and active lifestyle has long been associated with chronic disease prevention. Nuts and their coproducts such as oil, cake, plant-based milk substitutes, flour, and shell are rich in lipids, proteins, phenolics, and other bioactive compounds. Nut flour also presents interesting physical properties, such as water or oil holding capacity, foam properties, emulsifying activity, and emulsion stability. These biological and physical properties make these products commercially attractive as organic ingredients in several foods such as spreads, bakery products, and cereal bars. In this chapter, the nutritional and bioactive profiles, as well as the evidenced health-promoting effects of nuts originating from Brazil, will be discussed. The focus will be on commercial nuts such as cashews, pecan, and Brazil nuts, along with some underexplored and relatively unknown indigenous species, such as sapucaia, chichá, monguba, and pracaxi. The knowledge of these Brazilian native nuts and their coproducts is important for stimulating their consumption among the population and their large-scale commercialization.

Abstract:
Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) may be described as a self-configured wireless networks that can be used to track physical objects or monitor environmental features, such as temperature or motion. The sensed data is then passed across the network to the main location or sink node, where the data can be processed and analyzed. Sensor nodes in WSN are fundamentally resource-constrained: they have restricted processing power, computing, space, and transmission bandwidth. Object tracking is considered as one of the major applications. However, many of the recent articles focused on object localization. In this chapter, the authors suggest an effective approach for tracking objects in WSNs. The aim is to achieve both minimal energy consumption in reporting activity and balanced energy consumption across the WSN lifetime extension of sensor nodes. Furthermore, data reliability is considered in our model. The chapter starts by formulating the multi-object tracking problem using 0/1 Integer Linear programming. In addition, the authors adopted the swarm intelligence technique to solve the optimization problem.

Abstract:
Functional foods are an important part of an overall healthy lifestyle that includes a balanced diet and physical activity. The consumption of probiotic foods has many benefits. Dairy products that contain probiotic bacteria are those that are produced with various fermentation methods, especially lactic acid fermentation, by using starter cultures and those that have various textures and aromas. Fermented dairy probiotic products are popular due to their differences in taste and their favourable physiological effects. However, recent upsurge in interest of consumers towards dairy alternatives has opened up new research areas for developing non-dairy probiotic products. Different substrates such as cereals, fruit juices, vegetables can be used utilized for delivering these beneficial microorganisms. This chapter provides an insight on the recent research/developments about selection criteria of bacteria as probiotics and in the field of technological properties of probiotics.
