Abstract:
Purpose – Although the corporations widely use the suggestion schemes to elicit the creative ideas of their employee, sustaining a suggestion scheme is still a challenge. Employee suggestion schemes have been studied from many perspectives to illustrate its objectives, nature, content, process, significance and the benefits. Arguments have also been made with respect to the success and failures of the suggestion schemes. The purpose of this paper is to explore the factors to assess the sustainability of a suggestion system. Design/methodology/approach – This paper thus explores the critical success factors of suggestion scheme through a literature review and filters the critical determinants for sustainability of suggestion using factor analysis. The data collection was done using a survey technique. Findings – The results identity the five major factors as determinants to sustainability of a suggestion system as reported in the paper. Originality/value – This paper has made an attempt to explore the determinants to assess the sustainability of a suggestion system and has contributed toward the new knowledge in terms of sustainability of a suggestion system.

Abstract:
Purpose Employee suggestion scheme (ESS) have existed for many years and many articles have been published over the past decades. They have been studied from many perspectives to illustrate their objectives, nature, content, process, significance and the benefits. Arguments have also been made with respect to success and failures of the suggestion schemes. Although the corporations widely use the suggestion schemes to elicit the creative ideas of their employees, sustaining a suggestion scheme is still a challenge. The purpose of this paper is to extract the critical success factors and critical success criteria to the suggestion scheme and to discuss the importance of these factors on sustainability of suggestion system. This is a literature review paper. Design/methodology/approach This is a literature review paper. The research used the university library to search for the relevant material. The university has an access for 25,000 journals. As the university had the subscription to main databases such as EBASCO, SCIENCE DIRECT, EMERALD, Google Scholar and WILEY, a search was performed on these databases using the key terms. The keywords used in the searches included: Suggestion System, Suggestion Scheme, Employee Participation, Employee Involvement, Innovation, Employee Creativity and Ideas Management. The Google Scholar citation tab was also searched further to identify any related articles. The citations of resulting articles were scrutinized further for further clues. Findings This paper identifies 23 critical success factors and 9 critical success criteria for suggestion schemes. It also discusses the interconnection between the critical success factors and the critical success criteria. Further, the frequency of each of the factors is also presented. It recognizes the lack of work on the assessment framework for sustainability of a suggestion scheme. Practical implications This paper should be of value to practitioners of suggestion schemes and to academics who are interested in knowing how this program has evolved and where it is today and what future it holds. It offers practical help to an individual starting out on research on the sustainability of suggestion schemes. Originality/value The paper attempts to put together many factors discussed in the literature and proposed a definition to define the sustainability of the suggestion system and categorized them as critical success factors and critical success criteria.

Abstract:
Abstract Employee Suggestion Schemes have been used in organizations for a long time due to the fact that they enable fostering of creative ability of employees. However, they must be used effectively and in a sustainable manner to better the creativity and innovation capacity of organizations in order to improve competitive advantage. Therefore there is a need to understand the maturity of Employee Suggestion Schemes. This paper proposes a new, structured evaluation tool for assessing an organizational Employee Suggestion Scheme maturity. It suggests five building blocks: Leadership and Work Environment, System Capability, System Effectiveness, Organizational Encouragement and System Barriers, each of them characterized by several relevant indicators and an assessment/grading scale in order for an organization to be able to determine the maturity level of their Employee Suggestion Scheme as: Initial stage, Development stage or Advanced stage. Organizations should apply this tool to assess the maturity level of their Employee Suggestion Scheme and draw a roadmap for its improvements.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to assess the employee suggestion scheme of three organizations based in the United Arab Emirates. A framework that consists of five sustainability factors identified based on an empirical study has been applied. The sustainability factors identified through this study include leadership and organizational environment, system capability, system effectiveness, organizational encouragement and system barrier. The paper draws conclusions about the key practices necessary to foster sustainability of the employee suggestion system. The paper then presents a final framework that the organizations can apply to assess their suggestion schemes and to develop potential change strategies. The study findings reveal the importance of five factors, and with more cases, future research can be conducted to identify further practices relevant to specific industry. More levels of maturity for sustainability suggestion system could also be defined with future research. Design/methodology/approach – The assessment framework was developed drawing on a thorough review of the literature and data collected and analyzed using various statistical tools. The developed assessment framework was validated using case study method. Semi-structured interviews were used to elicit relevant information during the case study. Findings – An assessment framework comprising five major factors for sustainability of suggestion scheme of has been presented. The five factors include: leadership and work environment, system capability, system effectiveness, organizational encouragement and system barriers. Sustainability of a suggestion system can be understood as a three-stage model comprising three stages: the initial stage, the developmental stage and the advanced stage. The key practices associated for each of these stages are discussed in detail. Research limitations/implications – The framework has taken into consideration the critical success factors, and critical success factors emerged from the literature review conducted for this study. The framework therefore could be further refined by conducting more case studies and can propose maturity levels. Originality/value – The paper has developed a framework that can be used to assess the sustainability of the suggestion scheme in an organization. This model has been applied to assess the individual schemes and draw upon potential change strategies.

Abstract:
Innovation at work is mainly driven by employees' ideas. This paper reports a study of the effectiveness (e.g., rate of suggestion making) of schemes for capturing these ideas. Based on a survey of 182 UK organizations, the study shows that decentralized suggestion schemes and work-based systems are more effective than centralized and informal schemes. The extent of planning, publicity, feedback and management support given to the scheme, and the type of reward offered to employees, also independently account for variation in effectiveness. Publicity and non-monetary rewards, though, are found to be most decisive, regardless of scheme type. Learning culture also affects the rate of suggestion making, though the effect is greater for centralized and decentralized schemes than for the others. The key implication of the findings is that by paying particular attention to how they are advertised and how participation is rewarded, organizations could improve the return on their idea capture schemes.

Abstract:
PurposeThe purpose of this study is identifying and ranking the various antecedents or enablers that will enhance performance through employee suggestion schemes (ESSs) in various sector-specific businesses based in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), an emerging Arab country.Design/methodology/approachThis study employs the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) to prioritize the factors affecting ESS. The AHP model was developed with five criteria and 24 subcriteria based on the interactional theory of organizational creativity. Data were collected through interviews with 27 top-level managers and industry experts from nine government agencies, nine semigovernment agencies, and nine privately owned UAE-based businesses.FindingsThe findings show that leadership support and management style, individual attributes, and corporate strategy are the most important factors that influence performance through ESS.Research limitations/implicationsThe research model had limited dimensions and the findings cannot be generalized. To generalize the findings, the study should be carried out in other GCC countries because of homogeneity in the political, organizational, and sociocultural context. The outcome of the study provides both organizational and managerial implications for the better organizational performance through ESS.Originality/valuePast studies on ESS have neglected the construct of individual characteristics of employees that generate novel ideas. This paper addresses the gap of sector-specific studies by considering that individual attributes of creative people as individuals are the heart of innovation, along with contextual factors that could help organizations to transform innovative engines through ESS. The originality of this research stems from a reliable and valid framework that can be subsequently used for driving performance through ESS. This study is a relevant contribution to both the academic literature and practical implications.

Abstract:
PurposeThis study applies a decision support tool to prioritize the various drivers that influence employee suggestion schemes (ESSs) in both public and private organizations based in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries for better organizational performance.Design/methodology/approachUsing theories of organizational creativity, an analytic hierarchy process (AHP) model was developed with 5 criteria and 24 sub-criteria. Data were collected from executives (n = 48) from both public and private organizations in the GCC. Later, the data were interpreted with a priority vector assigned to each criterion and sub-criterion.FindingsThe results indicate that leaders/management support, individual traits and organization culture are the key drivers that influence employees' involvement in an ESS.Research limitations/implicationsThe study is limited to a small sample size, and data were collected only in three GCC countries. The study provides insights into ESS in the context of developing countries and is a relevant contribution to both theory and practice. The results will be of interest to businesses and academics for improving understanding on the various enablers of successful employee participation programme implementation and subsequent increase in organizational performance in the GCC.Originality/valueThe novelty of this study is that it resolves the lack of empirical research in the Middle East countries/GCC. The transition phase of knowledge-based economies highlights the significance of innovation and creativity through active employee participation to improve business results. The study attempts to prioritise both individual- and organizational-level drivers for promoting ESS by leveraging theories of creativity in alignment with the GCC National Innovation Agenda. This study can be generalized from the GCC context due to homogeneity in organizational governance and cultural aspects.

Abstract:
Purpose Past studies have noted the important role of employee suggestion system (ESS) within the organizations. The use of ESS has been shown to help organizations address improvement- and cost-related problems. The advantages of ESSs are not limited to improving a work-related performance but can also lead to innovations through employees’ creativity. Creative ideas are very important for organizations to build its competitive advantage. Therefore, it is important to identify and understand the factors that contribute to the effectiveness of employee suggestion scheme and its success which has not been well-studied. This study aims to provide decision-makers within organizations with a deeper understanding of the factors that need to be considered in organizing and managing ESSs for its maximum effectiveness Design/methodology/approach An analysis of 273 surveys collected from several organizations with ESS experience in the United Arab Emirates was conducted. Survey scales were developed based on previous research and hypotheses are stated. Regression analysis was used to test the hypotheses. Correlation analysis were used to understand the interrelations among the five factors Findings Results suggest that the four critical success factors, namely, system capability, organizational encouragement, leadership support and employee participation, are positively related to the ESS outcome and its valuable predictors. Some managerial implications of the results of this study are important to note. It is critical for managers to establish rewards, evaluation, feedback and awareness of ESS. Originality/value On the basis of a possible future extended research scope in combination with a qualitative research methodology, one could deepen the understanding of influence of country of origin and of institutional mechanisms that might explain higher effectiveness of ESS outcome This appears to be the first published research study to link critical success factors for maximum effectiveness of ESSs.

Plansangket, Suthira. "New weighting schemes for document ranking and ranked query suggestion." Thesis, University of Essex, 2017. http://repository.essex.ac.uk/19456/.

Full text
Abstract:
Term weighting is a process of scoring and ranking a term’s relevance to a user’s information need or the importance of a term to a document. This thesis aims to investigate novel term weighting methods with applications in document representation for text classification, web document ranking, and ranked query suggestion. Firstly, this research proposes a new feature for document representation under the vector space model (VSM) framework, i.e., class specific document frequency (CSDF), which leads to a new term weighting scheme based on term frequency (TF) and the newly proposed feature. The experimental results show that the proposed methods, CSDF and TF-CSDF, improve the performance of document classification in comparison with other widely used VSM document representations. Secondly, a new ranking method called GCrank is proposed for re-ranking web documents returned from search engines using document classification scores. The experimental results show that the GCrank method can improve the performance of web returned document ranking in terms of several commonly used evaluation criteria. Finally, this research investigates several state-of-the-art ranked retrieval methods, adapts and combines them as well, leading to a new method called Tfjac for ranked query suggestion, which is based on the combination between TF-IDF and Jaccard coefficient methods. The experimental results show that Tfjac is the best method for query suggestion among the methods evaluated. It outperforms the most popularly used TF-IDF method in terms of increasing the number of highly relevant query suggestions.

Till sist undersöktes en lämplig implementationsplan.<br>Many companies are today facing a business situation with rising competition, shrinking markets, and increasing customer demands. Above all, many are stuck with an outdatedapproach on how to run their business, an approach that is poorly adapted to the ever moredemanding market. The recommended solution is often spelled "implement a quality mindsetand start working with improvements". However, this can be much easier said than done forcompanies without any experience of such a strategy, as well as any significant deficiencies in itsregular organizational structure. Demotikos AB in Stockholm is an example of such a company. This thesis is aiming to produce an improvement program for Demotikos AB by analyzing differentquality philosophies and concepts, as well as making a detailed situation analysis of thecompany. The goal is to present an improvement program together with an implementation planthat is well adapted to the company’s current condition and at the same time consistent withcurrent research literature. The company also wish to be able to use the collected quality data inthe report as a basis for a quality introduction for its employees. The company’s needs as well as problem areas were identified, through a present day analysis. The result were compared it with what effects various improvement programs could present. After an appropriate program was found the project went on to evaluate various methods andtools. Abstract:
Förbättringsförslagen mynnade ut i: avsatt tid, förbättringsarbete i grupp, uppstartsmöte, ny process, underlag för utveckling av nytt IT-system, ekonomisk och symbolisk belöning.<br>The business world is constantly subject to intense competition that requires continuous development of products, personnel and operations within the company. The development towards a better state comes at the expense of strict requirements in job descriptions where continuous improvement is part of the working role of individuals. In order to link the continuous improvement of the business well-being, there is a need of structured work for improvement in ways of a well-functioning suggestion scheme. Suggestion schemes main purpose is to utilize the experience and knowledge of all employees by encouraging individuals' skills and creativity, which will contribute with innovative and competitive suggestions. Personnel is a resource that covers particular knowledge that no other company can copy; therefore it should be utilized to the maximum extent possible. The aim of the project is to identify and specify improvement measures for the suggestion scheme at GKN Aerospace Sweden AB in Trollhättan. The work consisted of an initial literature review, which included direct and indirect factors effecting the continuous improvement with linkage to the proposed suggestion scheme. In order to concretize the theoretical framework of the tools main purpose for the continuous improvement, a theoretical and a practical benchmarking was utilized. The company's current suggestion scheme was mapped and analyzed, and a foundation for future improvements was established.GKN Aerospace Sweden is part of the GKN Group, which operates in more than 30 countries around the world and employs about 50 000 individuals. The company manufactures components for aircraft and rocket engines, as well as service and maintenance. In the current situation GKN Aerospace manages a suggestion scheme that depends entirely on an internal IT system and has an average lead time of 43 weeks until a decision is made. The reward system for received suggestions is an economic reimbursement calculated through a complex formula. The entire suggestion scheme process is extensive and includes several loops for conducting the evaluation of suggestions. The thesis resulted in improvement propositions based on studies and situation analysis, but differs from the expected target to improve and develop the current system. The problem that arose was that the current system does not support the company's expectations for the suggestion scheme process. It resulted in a completely new system with associated procedures and reward guidelines were developed to create incentives and higher motivation for the submission of suggestions for improvement. The improvement propositions resulted in: dedicated time for improvements, group-based activities for continuous improvements, start-up meetings, new process, basis for the development of a new IT system, economic and symbolic rewards.Date: 2015-

Abstract:
AbstractClassification schemes are important groundwork for research on many topics of different business disciplines such as information systems (IS). They make investigating topics manageable by allowing researchers to delimit their work to certain taxa or types (e.g., of artifacts or firms) and provide a basis for generalization. Opposed to theoretically grounded typologies, taxonomies are empirically derived from entities of a phenomenon and therefore have several advantages, such as more detailed and exhaustive coverage. Initial guidelines for developing taxonomies in business have been proposed; however, research is still missing a clear set of applicable procedures to empirically build taxonomies. We tackle this topic by suggesting an inductive approach based on the procedures of content and cluster analysis. Each of the proposed six steps is amended with comprehensive state-of-the-art guidelines, suggestions, and formative measures of reliability and validity.

Abstract:
AbstractThe world of AI offers new opportunities for companies and is therefore of particular interest to entrepreneurs at potentially every level impacting their business. The following article therefore tries to classify the roles of artificial intelligence (AI) applications on the strategic level and their influence on business models. By means of case studies, current business practice will be examined to give entrepreneurs and researchers an understanding of this technology, by providing practical examples so that they can pursue their own AI path. The analysis is based on case studies that examine the role of AI in a company’s business model, both for new market participants in the form of start-ups and incumbents such as the tech giants. By means of case studies, both sides of the extremes are covered in order to provide a picture of the scope of the applications. Insights from these case studies are processed to develop a classification scheme of the influence of AI on business models. Furthermore, the interaction of the different innovation possibilities of AI is compared and with that the importance for the innovative power of companies. Additionally, strategy types are developed on the basis of the presented classification scheme, but give entrepreneurs a suggestion for their own AI path in terms of AI applications to consider. Further, research could consider the influence of the presented AI roles in business models, especially the AI-driven business model is of interest here.

Abstract:
Abstract Sweden has been hailed for its recent success in increasing the number of female directors, scriptwriters and producers. Published reports, panel discussions and a vast number of press conferences on the pressing matter of gender equality within the industry together with a 5050 quota have all put the Swedish film industry—and its CEO Anna Serner—on the map. However, the last couple of years has disclosed several scandals regarding sexism and discrimination in the Swedish film industry—just as in other national film industries. This paper sets out to discuss how female film workers (e.g., directors, actors and producers) understand and negotiate their experiences of male dominance within their work context. Based on a series of interviews with women working in Swedish film from the early 1960s until today, we analyze similarities and differences in experiences as well as how these experiences are explained by the interviewees. Their stories are analyzed by using feminist institutional theory to understand how policy, funding schemes and other institutional aspects are intertwined with their experiences. The paper sets out to analyze three themes: (1) comments and suggestions during production and post-production regarding female protagonists; (2) experience of gender trouble in the process of fundraising; and (3) strategies used by the interviewed filmmakers to produce a more women-friendly environment during productions.

Abstract:
This paper presents an approach to enhance various intelligent services of a Web-based collaborative knowledge management system. The proposed approach applies the two widely-used argumentation technologies, namely IBIS and Toulmin’s argumentation schemes, to structurally capture the deliberation and collaboration occurred during the consensual knowledge creation process. It employs RDF and OWL as its underlying knowledge representation language with well-defined semantics and reasoning mechanisms. Users can easily create knowledge using a simple corresponding graphical notation with machine-processable semantics. Derivation of implicit knowledge, similar concept discovery, as well as semantic search, are also enabled. In addition, the proposed approach incorporates the term suggestion function for assisting users in the knowledge creation process by computing the relevance score for each relevant term, and presenting the most relevant terms to users for possible term reusing or equivalence concepts mapping. To ensure the knowledge consistency, a logical mechanism for validating conflicting arguments and contradicting concepts is also developed. Founded on the proposed approach, a Web-based system, namely ciSAM, is implemented and available for public usage.

Abstract:
Abstract The 7th generation semi-submersible drilling units (CSDU) are characteristic of deeper drilling depth, site locations and higher operational efficiency, compared with the last generation ones. Given the enormous live loads change and increasing trend of main size dimensions, considerable optimization should be deployed to achieve a balance of economy, safety and good work performance. Trial calculation and definite assessment to check whether alternative schemes meet the requirements turns out to be ineffective, for the case by case study of hydrodynamic and structure strength analysis is time consuming. In the paper, an integrated optimal design model is formulated by merging multi-objective optimization and multi-attribute decision making into one. A predesigned parametric Finite Element Analysis (FEA) structural model of CSDU is developed and validated and then coupled with detailed hydrodynamic analysis. Three mutually conflicting design objectives are arrived by hydrodynamic solutions. They are stability, hydrodynamic performance and steel consumption, which are screened to obtain Pareto optimality. The Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to an Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) is applied to incorporate these optimal attributes into decision-making process, considering all criteria in terms of quantitative stability, hydrodynamic performance and qualitative economy. The objective entropy coefficient measuring the importance of different attributes is introduced into weight selection for the purpose of avoiding non-determinacy and optional judgements. The optimal solutions are further verified with main dimensions of CSDUs in service and also could give predictive suggestion for the new CSDUs. The study provides a more objective way of benchmarking different structural schemes of CSDU by considering multiple criteria simultaneously. It is demonstrated that the proposed structural optimization model is capable of effectively and accurately determining the optimal design of CSDU.

Abstract:
This study investigated processes in novice–expert consultation meetings in an organizational context to identify ‘what’ is done ‘how’ by novices and expert in consultation discourses. A conceptual model was developed for studying novice–expert design discourses at a fine-resolution level. An empirical study was performed at Rolls-Royce Aerospace Engineering. In total 7 audio-records were captured of meetings between trainees (novices) and expert designers, which occurred over the course of 3 trainee teams’ design projects. Relations were investigated between two coding schemes, namely the activity coding scheme and the conversational flow coding scheme. It was found that certain activities in the meeting were more often performed by either novices or experts, whereas other activities were more often performed collaboratively. Based on the results, implications for design engineering practitioners were derived and suggestions for further research are provided.

Abstract:
This study compares the effects of lingualized and linear occlusion schemes on the stress distribution of an implant retained mandibular overdenture (IRO) using finite element analysis (FEA). A high fidelity solid model of mandibular overdenture incorporating cusps and fossae of occlusal surface with two anterior implants in the canine regions and residual ridge support in the posterior region of the alveolar bone was modeled in SolidWorks and imported to ANSYS for stress analysis. The load was applied vertically to the central grooves and buccal cusp tips of the premolars and molar teeth for the lingualized and linear occlusion respectively. The loading magnitudes were 200 N on the premolars and 200 N on the molar teeth with multiple contact locations. The results show that the linear occlusion scheme generated higher stress in the implants and the prosthetic bar than the lingualized occlusion. The locations of high stress concentrations were the neck of the implants and the implant-prosthetic bar intersection for both the occlusion schemes. However, in the cortical bone lingualized occlusion loading scheme generated higher stress (max principal stress) than the linear one suggesting possibility of greater bone loss. The results of this study could be used to comprehend the stress distribution in the denture teeth, base, bone-implant interface and surrounding bone for the two occlusion concepts and may be of help to the clinicians in choosing the right scheme for the edentulous patients.

In ASME/IEEE 2007 Joint Rail Conference and Internal Combustion Engine Division Spring Technical Conference. ASMEDC, 2007. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/jrc/ice2007-40018.

Abstract:
The paper has explored the solutions to the thermal overload in the cylinder head of a heavy-duty vehicle 6-cylinder diesel engine and the thermal cracks in the valve-bridge of the engine. The experiments include measuring the temperature of the cylinder head bottom and testing the flow distribution of coolant through the upper nozzles of cylinder head bottom. The follow-up analysis was conducted on the causes of the excessive thermal load of the cylinder head bottom, the thermal cracks in the valve-bridge region, and the rationality of the structure of the water jacket for the cylinder head. The mechanism of the water jacket of cylinder head was further inquired. Then 3-D CFD numerical simulation of water jacket in the sixth cylinder, which is in the worst cooling condition, is performed. To enhance the flow form in water jacket and lower the cost of enhancement, we proposed 4 schemes of water jacket and conducted the numerical simulations to these schemes. It was identified that all these schemes have efficiently improved the flow field in water jacket. In the typical proposed scheme 1 in which 6 nozzles of all the 10 upper nozzles were blocked, the coolant flow rate on the bottom of the water jacket and in the cylinder head valve-bridge region increased by about 68.73%. The measuring results of the cylinder head bottom temperature show that the maximum temperature in the valve-bridge region of cylinder head is reduced by 9.2 °C and the temperature gradient reduction is 19.55 percent, suggesting that the thermal load and thermal stress of the studied diesel engine cylinder head has been significantly lowered.

Abstract:
Abstract With the rapid increase of turbine inlet temperature and the application of premixed combustion, turbine components, particularly the turbine endwall, works in extremely harsh environment and must be effectively cooled to ensure the component durability. Recently, new cooling schemes that employ both external film cooling and internal jet impingement cooling have drawn much attention due to their extraordinary performance. In this study, a numerical model of turbine endwall with jet impingement and film cooling was established and validated against the experimental results. To investigate the effects of geometric parameters related with this cooling scheme, four parameters including impingement hole-to-hole pitch Pi, impingement hole diameter Di, impingement channel height H, film hole diamete Df, were selected to adjust within a reasonable range. The uniform design method was used to collect a database that represented the design space formed by the four parameters. Performance criterions including area-averaged overall cooling effectiveness, standard deviation of overall cooling effectiveness, total pressure drop coefficient of the cooling system were evaluated through CFD calculations. To explore and exploit the design space as much as possible, a Kriging surrogate model was built from the database. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was conducted based upon the surrogate model to investigate the main effect of each parameter and the correlation between parameters. Finally, based upon the knowledge obtained from ANOVA, typical designs were selected from the database which yielded either best or poorest performances. Through detailed analysis of flow and heat transfer mechanisms of these typical designs, the influence of each parameter was illustrated clearly and suggestions for the design of similar cooling schemes were drawn.

Abstract:
A complex crack can occur at the dissimilar metal weld parts of nuclear pipes due to stress corrosion cracking. The fracture behavior of such crack is different with those of a simple through-wall crack. Thus, the engineering estimation equations for predicting the fracture mechanics parameters, i.e. crack opening displacement and J-integral, should be newly provided in order to evaluate the leak-before-break of pipe including complex cracks. In the previous research, an engineering scheme using reduced thickness analogy was suggested to calculate the crack opening displacement and J-integral for complex cracked pipes. However, this method has limitations in the sense that a through-wall crack is assumed to be developed only in the circumferential direction, and the effect of crack closure cannot be considered. Another scheme for complex cracked pipes is the enhanced reference stress method considering crack closure effect by suggesting the optimized reference load for complex crack geometry. It presented the more accurate results compared to previous engineering estimation scheme. However, an elastic component of crack opening displacement and J-integral were calculated by assuming the crack shape as the simple through-wall crack due to the absence of engineering solutions for complex-cracked pipes. In this context, finite element based evaluation of fracture parameters was performed to confirm the validation of previous estimation schemes. Moreover, the variations of crack opening displacement and J-integral according to a change of surface crack depth ratio of complex crack are systematically investigated based on detailed 3-D finite element analyses. Furthermore, enhanced reference stress method considering finite element based elastic values from the complex-cracked pipe models is assessed to overcome the limitation of previous enhanced reference stress approach.
