Abstract:
This study tests the effect of a pairing suggestion for food with wine by the glass directly placed on the menu. We made the assumption that these suggestions can, by reducing social and financial risk, increase wine by the glass sales. One hundred and fifty-nine customers of a Swiss restaurant participated in this experiment. For 82 customers, a food and wine by the glass suggestion was directly placed on the menu while the 77 others were given a normal menu (without a pairing suggestion). Results show that this type of suggestion significantly increases wine sold by the glass. Practical applications of this strategy are discussed.

Abstract:
This article defines the concepts of suggestion and speech strategy, as well as provides the examples of the use of suggestion speech strategies in French business correspondence. In addition, the authors characterize the suggestion speech strategy, stressing that one can «dissolve» the request in the structure of the French sentence instead of directly giving instructions to the interlocutor. The authors also consider the techniques of giving hidden commands to the interlocutor. The information that the communicant possesses before the communication act (upcoming speech communication; cognitive presuppositions; context) determine the choice of vocabulary and grammatical forms. The suggestion speech strategy is implemented in several ways: direct (imperative) and indirect, intentional and unintentional, and also involves the positions which the communicant should rely on (eliminating traces of judgment and personal assessment; more or less conscious choice of a certain position when arguing or choosing words by modalizing them; a distant position that would force a communicant to accept certain attitudes, relying on a neutral attitude of a specialist who can impartially analyze the subject of the conversation). Based on this, the purpose of this study is to analyze the speech strategies of suggestion in French business correspondence.

Abstract:
This study is innovative in that it draws together the concepts of suggestion from several cultural groups and develops an inventory to account for variations the occurrence of scale to studies the relatively new area of the effects of suggestion in classrooms and compares effect on personality and academic variables. As new ideas and knowledge become more widespread and accepted by the community and teaching profession, precision in the applications of suggestion in the classroom is being seen as more important. Although new to education, suggestion and similar variations has always been central to influencing behaviour and learning among pastoral, counseling and hypnotherapy fields. Teachers who had experience or influence from those fields or the ideas of Lozanov (1978) or accelerated learning groups were and are more the exception than the rule. However, as new ideas become more influential, the influence of suggestion in is becoming increasingly important in progressive, modern education. A major goal of the study was to provide a valid instrument to compare Chinese and Australian differences and similarities in use of suggestion in learning. It was hoped that such a comparison would provide increased mutual understanding of values, strategies, practices and preferences by teachers and students. A second goal was to develop a causative model that explained the relationships between the measured variables of personality and learning behaviour and suggestion in teaching and learning.. A third aim was to make a comparison on effects and performance of suggestion in teaching and learning in Australian, Chinese and Australian accelerative learning classes. This study examined differences between Australian and Chinese high school Science classrooms in their use of suggestion in teaching and learning. To ascertain the prevalence and types of suggestion in the classroom the 39-item suggestion in teaching and learning (STL) scale was developed and validated v in Year 7, 9, and 11 high school classes in China and Australia. The STL scale categorized suggestion into the following types or subscales: Selfsuggestion, metaphor, indirect non-verbal suggestion, general spoken suggestion, negative suggestion, intuitive suggestion, direct verbal suggestion, relaxation, and de-suggestion. The study involved surveying 344 participants (n=182 female, n=162 male) from four high schools in Australia and China. A further 374 participants (n=108 teachers, n=266 students) from six high schools were surveyed for selecting a Chinese sample in a pilot study. About 284 participants (China: 200 students; Australia: 84 students [includes 8 adults]) were observed for validation of the STL instrument. All subjects and classes were randomly selected and were surveyed and observed for the purpose of scale and model development. The STL scale was found to be capable of distinguishing different types of suggestion within Chinese, Australian, and Australian Accelerative Learning classes. The STL scale was significant as a first scale to measure suggestion in teaching and learning in Australian and Chinese classrooms. Items in the scale were strongly and significantly correlated with other items within the subscales and with the overall scale. Path analytic techniques were used to explain relationships between the STL scale, its subscales, nation, gender and high school students profiles on stress, depression, learning styles and academic grades. Limitations of the study included problems arising from language and cultural differences as well as newness of the scale and the field of study. Recommendations for further study included strengthening aspects of the scale with new items and further qualitative and quantitative studies on the uses of suggestion in academic learning and other forms of change in childhood and adolescence.

Abstract:
Purpose/aim: This paper research to help SME travel agencies make ticket pricing strategy and choose the reasonable age group for publicity. Design/methodology/approach: This thesis will use SWOT to analyze the strength, weakness, opportunity and threat of Hainan’s SME travel agencies, and also the marketing theory and human resource management. Through discussion and research we will analyze the connection between the influencing factors for travel agencies. The data has been collected through questionnaires. The analysis includes a description of the samples and statistical tests in form of regressions. Findings: The analysis showed that there is a connection between the frequency of travel and the age of the travelers. There are also connections between the select ticket price and different cities. It is important for SME travel agencies make a ticket price strategy. Originality/value: According to this thesis, it is obvious that SME travel agencies have more problems with travelers and an unreasonable strategy in Hainan. Based on these findings we would argue that small and medium sized travel agencies should choose a group consisting of young and middle aged adults when they advertise, decide their ticket pricing strategy and when they develop new tourism products. This study has a value when it comes to analyzing the situation and develop suggestions for SME travel agencies in Hainan.

Abstract:
Lint yield response to differing irrigation treatments based on maximum allowable soil moisture depletions was tested in an indeterminate (D +PL 5816) and a determinate variety (D+PL 5415) selection. The Arizona Meteorological Weather Network (AzMet) was used to summate evapotranspiration demands with irrigations triggered at 35 (wet), 50 (med), and 65 % (dry) maximum allowable soil moisture depletion levels. Soil water holding capacity was gravimetrically measured to a depth of four feet on one foot increments. The study consisted of three treatments replicated four times utilizing a complete block split plot design. When the allowable depletion level was attained, the water volume necessary to refill the effective root zone was delivered. This was accomplished by manipulating irrigation set times and flow rates. Irrigation volumes were 66.7, 57.2, and 46.9 acre - inches for the wet, medium, and dry treatments respectively. Lint yields were significantly reduced when the maximum allowable soil moisture depletion exceeded 50% in the determinate variety selection while there were no significant lint yield differences in any of the irrigation treatments with the more indeterminate variety. Water stress sensitivity is increased with the determinate variety while the indeterminate variety is more forgiving. With variety selection shifts in the Central Arizona desert towards a reduced season approach and utilization of more determinate varieties, water management strategy should be modified to minimize or eliminate any water stress during the flowering period. The AzMet weather network information offers cost effective (free) and reliable water use information. The system can be used to assist with irrigation scheduling if a producer is willing to attempt to characterize differing soil water holding capacities on the farm and manage accordingly.

Kim, Sook-Hyun. "A Comparison of Consumers' Store Patronage Between South Korea and the United States: Suggestions for the Marketing Strategy of the South Korean Discount Stores." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/31886.

Full text
Abstract:
Since 1997, the retail industry of South Korea has suffered a decline in sales due to the nation's financial crisis. Because of the increase of price consciousness, discount stores have become the stores most attractive to South Korean consumers. The purpose of this study was to (a) compare the differences between South Korean and the U.S. consumers in demographics, shopping orientation, perception of the importance of store and product attributes, and store evaluation, satisfaction and patronage in discount stores and (b) examine the relationships among the six variables. In addition, South Korean consumers' preferences toward the strategies used in the U.S. discount stores were examined to determine whether these strategies could be adapted to South Korean discount stores. The proposed model suggests that consumers' shopping orientation affects their perception of the importance of store and product attributes. Consumers' perception of the importance of attributes affects how they evaluate a store. Consumers' evaluation of the store then influences their satisfaction with the store. If consumers are satisfied with the store, they choose to patronize the store. A total of 234 participants recruited at Wal-Mart were included in this study, 117 from South Korea and 117 from the U.S. Results showed that there were significant differences between the two countries in participants' occupation, marital status, age, education, the perception of the importance of attributes in discount stores, and store evaluation and satisfaction. When the relationships between variables were examined, results showed that the proposed model is partially supported. When South Korean participants' preferences toward the strategies used in the U.S. were examined, they showed high preferences toward some strategies. The implication of the results were discussed.<br>Master of Science

Abstract:
Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 2014.<br>Since 2006, DGF struggled with a diverse and disjointed corporate culture. In this industry, the diversity did not bring about a competitive advantage – on the contrary, it was a negative influence on the organisation’s sustainable performance. It was clear that there were many different cultures, different sub-cultures and different ways of working within DGF, which affected the overall company’s effectiveness, efficiencies and performance. The core research question for the purpose of this research assignment was, “What is the existing culture within DGF, how did this culture evolve and what can be done to change the culture into a strategic example?” The empirical analysis made use of quantitative research, where the majority of the research outcomes were based on the findings from two types of questionnaires. The first questionnaire, “Beehive 2.0”, was used as an analytical tool to analyse DGF’s culture and the second questionnaire was the DGF Employee Opinion Survey (EOS). This survey allowed a safe environment in which the employees voiced their opinions in terms of the organisation. Initial informal one-on-one interviews, open forum Senior Leadership Team discussions and group discussions were held to determine the team’s general approach, how individuals felt towards the organisational culture at the time of the research and whether there was a real opportunity for an improved culture. The Senior Leadership Team identified organisational needs in terms of trust building, changing the culture and improving staff moral. It was clear through the discussions that people were cautious to speak up about organisational culture issues in a group environment. A lot of hurt came to light and without the ability to ensure confidentiality and privacy, a true reflection of how people perceived the culture would not have surfaced. As a result, the quantitative data gathered formed only a small part of the total data gathered for this research. It became apparent through the initial informal discussions as previously referred to, that there was a lack of trust and collaboration, and a culture of fear amongst the employees. The series of acquisitions DGF has been involved with over the years, without solid change management to ensure a unified culture, resulted in many different cultures and sub-cultures within the company. Change management coupled with a unified culture was promised to the employees prior to the acquisitions, but it never materialized. This left the employees uncertain and weary to trust their leaders. Communication throughout the organisation was poor and there was a top down approach to strategy creation. Through this, employees did not feel empowered to make their own decisions and this negatively influenced their trust in the organisation. There was little focus on talent creation, managers did not take the time to impart knowledge or develop employees and in general, employees felt neglected, under-valued and unappreciated. Employee engagement was very low. Most of the results obtained from the EOS and Beehive survey research confirmed the initial needs identified by the Senior Management Team and confirmed the reason for the low morale and negativity in DGF. Employees have lost confidence in a better tomorrow within DGF, and felt that it will not help to speak up anymore. No solid action plans came from making their voices heard in the past, they were concerned about their job security and previous EOS survey results has shown that less than a third of employees felt that positive change could still happen. There was, therefore, a dire need to identify a cultural framework for DGF. Once the new economy leadership culture was selected as the most optimal framework, the existing DGF culture needs to transition into the selected framework. The change of culture was therefore needed to restore the trust of the employees and achieve sustainable competitiveness in DGF, since employee satisfaction and performance are directly linked to organisational culture.

In May 2004, the delegates of the Library Commission of the CRuI had already identified the issue of electronic publishing as one of the strategic aspects to be addressed and explored with the utmost attention. The setting up of the working group on Electronic Publishing, co-ordinated by the University of Florence, formalised this interest, stimulating the analysis of the state of the art in this field in Italy, the opportunities which it offered to the academic world and the definition of possible lines of development. The "Recommendations" comprised in this publication are addressed to the delegates of the Chancellors of the Italian universities and their collaborators, and intended to provide information and suggestions for the development of electronic publishing initiatives. They are consequently designed not only as a tool for help and guidance for those who are already moving in the direction of a University publishing initiative, but also as an invitation to reflect on the importance that electronic publishing is acquiring for the teaching and scientific activities of the future.

Abstract:
AbstractThe world of AI offers new opportunities for companies and is therefore of particular interest to entrepreneurs at potentially every level impacting their business. The following article therefore tries to classify the roles of artificial intelligence (AI) applications on the strategic level and their influence on business models. By means of case studies, current business practice will be examined to give entrepreneurs and researchers an understanding of this technology, by providing practical examples so that they can pursue their own AI path. The analysis is based on case studies that examine the role of AI in a company’s business model, both for new market participants in the form of start-ups and incumbents such as the tech giants. By means of case studies, both sides of the extremes are covered in order to provide a picture of the scope of the applications. Insights from these case studies are processed to develop a classification scheme of the influence of AI on business models. Furthermore, the interaction of the different innovation possibilities of AI is compared and with that the importance for the innovative power of companies. Additionally, strategy types are developed on the basis of the presented classification scheme, but give entrepreneurs a suggestion for their own AI path in terms of AI applications to consider. Further, research could consider the influence of the presented AI roles in business models, especially the AI-driven business model is of interest here.

Abstract:
AbstractThe lean startup framework is one of the most popular contributions in the practitioner-oriented entrepreneurship literature. This chapter builds on a recent paper (Shepherd &amp; Gruber in Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice. 10.1177/1042258719899415, 2020) to highlight new insights into how new ventures are started based on the lean startup framework. Specifically, we describe the origin of the lean startup framework and its five main building blocks—(1) identifying and evaluating market opportunities in startups, (2) designing business models, (3) engaging in validated learning (including customer development), (4) building minimum viable products, and (5) learning whether to persevere with or pivot from the current course of action. We organize these building blocks into a framework suggesting how considering the contextual characteristics of and the interdependencies between the building blocks can enrich our understanding of using the lean startup framework to start a new venture.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper presents a suggestion-based fuel efficient controller for connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) in presence of human-driven vehicles (HDVs). The suggestion-based controller, apart from evaluating the fuel efficient control solution of the host CAV, provides suggested velocity commands to the HDVs so that the fuel efficiency of itself or the group can improve. We assume that in the connected vehicle system, the HDVs are also able to receive information though Vehicle to Vehicle (V2V) communication and they always try to follow the suggested commands. The suggestion-based control provides additional decision variables to the CAVs with which they can influence the actions of the HDVs and hence improve the fuel efficiency of the whole group. The controller is implemented in a model predictive control (MPC) framework where the suggested command velocities are held constant over some prescribed time so that the driver gets enough time to reach the suggested command velocities. For this control method to function, we present a model that captures the response of a HDV to different suggested-commands. The parameters of the model is obtained from a table-top drive simulator. The accuracy of this model is also validated with the experimental data (table-top drive simulator) and the results are presented in this paper. Simulation studies for the control strategies show the efficacy of the proposed control strategy when compared with existing baseline methods.

Abstract:
Purpose – further education and training play an important role in organizations development. The paper aims to analyze its relation to the financial performance of organizations, particularly to find which factors of further education are significantly related to the organization profitability indicators. Research methodology – it is an empirical study based on 142 profit-oriented organizations operating in the Czech Republic. Multiple median regression was used to investigate the correlation among organization profitability and talent management, long-term strategy, education evaluation, investments into education, industry sector, organization size and its owner. Findings – the results provide evidence that talent management, education evaluation, investments into education are significantly related to the considered profitability indicator ratios (ROA, ROE, ROCE, ROS). Research limitations – follow from the size of the research sample, its extension is planned for the continuation of our research. Practical implications – the results of the research could stimulate organizations to pay more attention to the key factors of further education in their development so as to improve their financial performance. Originality/Value – the authors are not aware of any other empirical study from the post-transformation economies analyzing the relation of further education and the organization´s financial performance. It extends our pilot study presented at ECMLG 2017 in London. The results provide a suggestion for organizations which steps to take in order to gain the most from further education.

Abstract:
To address the challenge of uncertainty regarding the attacker’s payoffs, capabilities, and other characteristics, recent work in security games has focused on learning the optimal defense strategy from observed attack data. This raises a natural concern that the strategic attacker may mislead the defender by deceptively reacting to the learning algorithms. This paper focuses on understanding how such attacker deception affects the game equilibrium. We examine a basic deception strategy termed imitative deception, in which the attacker simply pretends to have a different payoff assuming his true payoff is unknown to the defender. We provide a clean characterization about the game equilibrium as well as optimal algorithms to compute the equilibrium. Our experiments illustrate significant defender loss due to imitative attacker deception, suggesting the potential side effect of learning from the attacker.

Full text
Abstract:
This policy brief examines how co-management arrangements within small-scale fisheries can play a key role in enhancing sectoral and regional resilience. Despite major challenges, “multi-stakeholder collaborations” - such as co-management - demonstrate the potential for innovative knowledge transfer and strategic adaptation processes within the fisheries sector. The focus here is on Co-management Northern Bohuslän (Samförvaltning Norra Bohuslän), which promotes sustainable local fisheries and blue growth on Sweden’s west coast. The case illustrates how, under appropriate conditions, participatory local efforts can significantlycontribute to sustainability and resilience. The policy brief presents findings on related challenges and opportunities, including recommendations on future directions for the co-management initiative itself, and more general suggestions for co-management as a means to promote sectoral and regional resilience in the Nordic region.

Abstract:
In 2019, the Gambling Commission announced a National Strategy to Reduce Gambling Harms. Underlying the strategy is the Framework of Harms, outlined in Measuring gambling-related harms: A framework for action. "The Framework" adopts a public health approach to address gambling-related harm in Great Britain across multiple levels of measurement. It comprises three primary factors and nine related subfactors. To advance the National Strategy, all componentsneed to be supported by a strong evidence base. This report examines existing research expertise relevant to the Framework amongacademics based in the UK. The aim is to understand the extent to which the Framework factors and subfactors have been studied in order to identify gaps in expertise and provide evidence for decision making thatisrelevant to gambling harms research priorities. A social network analysis identified coauthor networks and alignment of research output with the Framework. The search strategy was limited to peer-reviewed items and covered the 12-year period from 2008 to 2019. Articles were selected using a Web of Science search. Of the 1417 records identified in the search, the dataset was refined to include only those articles that could be assigned to at least one Framework factor (n = 279). The primary factors and subfactors are: Resources:Work and Employment, Money and Debt, Crime;Relationships:Partners, Families and Friends, Community; and Health:Physical Health, Psychological Distress, and Mental Health. We used Gephi software to create visualisations reflecting degree centrality (number of coauthor networks) so that each factor and subfactor could be assessed for the density of research expertise and patterns of collaboration among coauthors. The findings show considerable variation by framework factor in the number of authors and collaborations, suggesting a need to develop additional research capacity to address under-researched areas. The Health factor subcategory of Mental Health comprised almost three-quarters of all citations, with the Resources factor subcategory of Money and Debt a distant second at 12% of all articles. The Relationships factor, comprised of two subfactors, accounted for less than 10%of total articles. Network density varied too. Although there were few collaborative networks in subfactors such as Community or Work and Employment, all Health subfactors showed strong levels of collaboration. Further, some subfactors with a limited number of researchers such as Partners, Families, and Friends and Money and debt had several active collaborations. Some researchers’ had publications that spanned multiple Framework factors. These multiple-factor researchers usually had a wide range of coauthors when compared to those who specialised (with the exception of Mental Health).Others’ collaborations spanned subfactors within a factor area. This was especially notable forHealth. The visualisations suggest that gambling harms research expertise in the UK has considerable room to grow in order to supporta more comprehensive, locally contextualised evidence base for the Framework. To do so, priority harms and funding opportunities will need further consideration. This will require multi-sector and multidisciplinary collaboration consistent with the public health approach underlying the Framework. Future research related to the present analysis will explore the geographic distribution of research activity within the UK, and research collaborations with harms experts internationally.

Abstract:
This is a guide for establishing and developing urban primary health centers (UPHCs) according to India’s National Health Mission framework, and using public–private partnership (PPP) arrangements with nongovernment organizations. It can be used by all states, regardless of where they are in the development and realization of their strategy, policies, and processes with respect to PPPs in UPHCs. For states that already have such a program, this may help to streamline and improve policies and processes. It also contains guidelines and suggestions that are useful for states that are open to or considering the implementation of similar programs.
