Abstract:

Abstract:
In this essay we used a questionnaire to find out which methods of teaching are being used in the first math course in 10 high schools in Malmoe and Lund in Sweden. The result indicates that the traditional method where the teacher first talks about a new section in the textbook followed by task solving by the students is the dominant method, used in 75 % of the total time. Other methods like working in a group and working with laboratory materials are rarely being used. According to the report of the Swedish mathematics delegation it is desirable to change the situation and many teachers agree. A big obstacle is lack of time. We have also illustrated the importance of alternative methods in mathematics teaching and suggested several ways how this teaching could be carried out.

Abstract:

Sight-reading is generally regarded by guitar teachers as a problem area of instruction. The aim of this thesis is to address the problem through a fourfold approach: 1. defining sight-reading in terms of its historical context ; 2. providing a rationale, and proposing an alternative method, for teaching sight-reading on the guitar based on a language teaching model ; 3. developing the proposed method ; 4. evaluating the proposed method experimentally. Music and language share many common characteristics. It is for this reason that Suggestopaedia, a method validated in language teaching, has been adapted for teaching the guitar with sight-reading skills as the central focus. Suggestopaedia has been chosen because it stimulates the whole personality, and all brain systems, of the learner.

Thesis (MA)-- Stellenbosch University, 2013.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The following thesis aims to contribute to the field of teaching German as a foreign language. It investigates the evolutionary history of Suggestopaedia, an alternative teaching method which originated during the late 1970s. The Bulgarian psychiatrist, Dr. Georgi Lozanov, discovered that relaxation and a stress-free environment promote both accelerated learning and memory retention. Further research proves that the combined elements and techniques of this method play a significant role to positively manipulate brain activity as well as individual perceptions, which could eventually result in the development of the personality. The author of this study analyses both the contributions and shortcomings of Suggestopaedia, reporting from personal experience gathered while teaching at a university in South Africa, and subsequently suggests an altered version of the suggestopaedic teaching ways. Various foreign language teaching methodologies are examined and evaluated while the main focus remains on Suggestopaedia and its principle of holistic learning. By exploiting the eclectic aspects of the suggestopaedic teaching method, this thesis investigates to what extent selected elements of different conventional methods can be integrated into Suggestopaedic teaching. Thereby the author ultimately proposes a holistic, enriched and modernized variant of Lozanovs Suggestopaedia for the teaching of German at schools in South Africa, by demonstrating practical examples executed at a private school.

Abstract:
Suggestopedia (also sometimes referred to as "Accelerated Learning") is a teaching methodology that claims to remove barriers to learning rather than teach students how to learn. Developed by Bulgarian psychotherapist and medical doctor Georgi Lozanov (1926- ), it utilizes a detailed, three-phase cycle of teaching in which about 75% of teaching time is devoted to "Activations", games and activities in which students rehearse material previously presented in unique "Concert Sessions" (which make up the other 25% of contact time). Suggestopedia highlights factors often forgotten in the classroom: the design of an "optimum" learning environment, high expectations of success from the teacher, the use of music and art, the importance of enjoying the learning process, and the fostering of an atmosphere of "relaxed alertness". The method has been used with some success, particularly in the teaching of foreign languages. Ostensibly based on the way we learn naturally, Suggestopedia has developed a number of incarnations, in some cases because Lozanov's work was not freely available in the West during the Cold War. This dissertation outlines the salient features of both Suggestopedia and some of its incarnations. Additionally, it suggests ways in which the method may be utilized in the high school English classroom in South Africa. In particular, it describes an intervention in which elements of Suggestopedia were used to teach creative writing in a multilingual environment. In short, this intervention involved the creation of a traditional two page creative "essay" inspired by, inter alia, the teacher's high expectations, the meditative atmosphere created by music, and the posters in the students' peripheral vision. A total of 158 Grade 9 and Grade 11 (mainly isiZulu speaking) students in an "ex-model C" school wrote, edited, and submitted such essays, the main criterion of success being whether each essay was deemed by the teacher to be of a sufficiently high standard to be reproduced here. The project, based on a qualitative research design using the process approach to writing and a Suggestopedicbased pedagogy, elicited many engaging pieces of writing from students. The spirit of their writing as well as the writers' own comments about the process will hopefully suggest the genius and versatility of the Lozanov methodology.

Abstract:
This diploma thesis is focused on the analysis of different alternative methods of teaching foreign languages and the possibilities and limitations of their usage in traditional school teaching. The theoretical part is focused on the definition of the terms alternative method and superlearning method and then it concentrates on an analysis of two methods which belong to the group of superlearning methods. Because there are many such methods, and they are very similar to each other, I decided to choose methods which are the biggest examples in the sub-category of superlearning. Those are Suggestopedia, as a method which was the first to be called as superlearning and many of other methods are its modification and Drama methods which, the past years or decades have been gaining more popularity. The practical part is focused on the usage of the analyzed methods or their parts during the traditional teaching of foreign languages. I am designing alternative possibilities of presentation, revision and evaluation of learning material.

1 Abstract This diploma introduces three alternative methods taught in the study of foreign languages - a method of suggestopedy, Nepustil's method and the Act and Speak method. The purpose of this work is to approach the methods from a historical and methodological perspective. The main focus is aimed at inspections of alternative schools, supplied with student's questionnaires and the visual material from classes. The theoretical part discusses methods from a historical perspective, the progress and presentation of grammar and learning material. Furthermore introducing the basic concept and features of alternative methods with the posibility of applying them during the teaching of Czech language for foreigners. The practical part introduces research made up of inspections at alternative schools along with interviews with founders and successors of these methods. As analysis of the questionnaires that explore the opinions and awareness of teachers about the effectivity and usefulness of untraditional methods in teaching is also a part of it. Practical inspections and conclusions based on the results of questionnaires showed the Act and Speak method to be the most beneficial method. The practical part concludes by presenting other activities for teaching Czech for foreigners that are based on those...

Abstract:
The process of learning grammar structures of a foreign language is usually difficult and boring for children. To overcome this problem I explore a combination of teaching methods in the target group, namely, Effective Affective Learning, Humanising Language Teaching, the Silent Way, Suggestopedia and Community Language Learning. I analyse how far they meet the learner’s needs and their multiple intelligences. I present fun grammar exercises centred on the learners in a pleasant and relaxing atmosphere where the learners form positive affective associations with the matter. Consequently, the learners internalise it better and memorise it longer than in ‘classic’ grammar teaching. In the context of this improvement of the teaching quality, the teacher must be a facilitator in the teaching learning process.

In this study it is shown why the discovery model of language learning is the appropriate model for effective language learning. The communicative teaching approach, classroom-negotiation and the importance of the process syllabus in second language acquisition is discussed. The language teacher's role as facilitator of learning, in communicative L2 - Afrikaans language teaching in the interactive classroom with a learner-centered focus is explained. It is further shown that the role of the teacher must undergo a paradigm shift especially now that principles of outcomes based education which forms part of curriculum 2005 has been introduced into all schools in South Africa in 1998/1999. The teacher is now a facilitator of knowledge and not a transmitter thereof. Important aspects of learning that influence learners' second language learning are discussed, for example classroom communication, facilitation, suggestopedia, factors that influence the understanding of subject matter, teacher and learner behaviours, positive learning atmosphere, treatment of Ieamer errors, learner perceptions, communicative strategies and methods of evaluation. A variety of language lessons which integrate various teaching theories, outcomes based education and the six language learning skills which are related to L 2-Afrikaans and the L 2-classroom are illustrated in Chapter 5.

Summaries in Afrikaans and English
This study aims to investigate and explain how the L2 -facilitator can effectively employ the various facilitation skills of language teaching in Afrikaans Second Language within the Outcomes Based Education framework in the learner-centred classroom. The facilitator is critical in providing an opportunity for multicultural learners to develop the necessary language learning skills to enjoy Afrikaans Second Language/Additional Language learning as an interesting learning experience within a positive learning milieu. In the learner-centred U -classroom, learners too must accept responsibility for their own and their peers' learning within the co-operative learning group. This study reveals how the L2 -facilitator can develop the necessary knowledge and skills concerning groupwork, such as the strategies enhancing L 2 -learning, effective group facilitation skills, learner attitudes towards the facilitator, problem-solving skills, co-operative learning as a control technique, communication, learners' behaviour and the advantages of groupwork. Furthermore, elements of classroom negotiation and the facilitator's methods of working in this negotiated partnership are also discussed. Since language learning is integral to lifelong learning, multicultural learners must be motivated to learn Afrikaans Second/ Additional language with greater enthusiasm. This necessitates the L2 -facilitator creating an interesting, challenging and authentic language learning environment where mutual respect and trust are emphasised. This study reveals how the L2 -facilitator could develop his/her knowledge of task-based L2 -teaching and use it with the effective techniques of facilitation and negotiation skills in the taskorientated second language classroom to lead learners to effective Afrikaans L2 -learning. The new National Language Standardisation Policy 200112002 necessitates the facilitator of Afrikaans L 2 -teaching/learning within the Outcomes Based Education framework and the revised Curriculum 2005 to be aufait with assessment and his/her role in assessment. Being knowledgeable on the various criteria and strategies regarding assessment is therefore imperative. Finally, chapter five illustrates practically how the facilitator could plan, organise, base, integrate and present authentic Afrikaans L 2 -lessons/work based on the theoretical knowledge and aspects of facilitation skills, group-work, task-based learning and assessment discussed in chapters two to four.
