Abstract:
Hanging is a form of mechanical asphyxia which is caused by suspension of the body by a ligature which encircles the neck, the constricting force being the weight of the body. Most hangings produce gradual, subtle and painless death. If done correctly, it is highly lethal. Since time immemorial, hanging has been practiced as a method of suicide. It is a significant public health concern. Understanding various socio-demographic factors that are related with hanging is essential for curbing this issue. In case of hanging the process of respiration i.e. the exchange of air between the atmosphere and the alveoli of lungs is prevented by ligature in neck, leading to asphyxia and death. Hanging may be complete/incomplete (partial) where the constricting forces are the body weight or even only the weight of the head. In complete hanging whole body is suspended, no part of the body touches the ground. Complete hanging is suicidal in nature unless otherwise proved. In partial hanging any part of the body touches the ground. Partial hanging is suicidal (100%) in nature & there is no 2nd thought.

Suicide constitutes a significant and yet under-recorded component of preventable mortality in many communities. Prevalent methods of suicide vary over time, and are influenced by the availability of noxious agents as well as ideas of what constitutes lethal techniques. Despite indications of self-destructive acts in many instances, it is sometimes difficult to accurately designate the manner of death as suicide, resulting in misclassifications among individual records. For example, deaths due to drug overdose, a fall from a height and drowning may be ‘accidental’, intentional or homicidal. Su
