Abstract:
This study explored the spatial distribution of phosphorus fractions in river sediments and analyzed the relationship between different phosphorus fractions and their environmental influence on the sediments within different watersheds in Eastern China. River sediments from two inflow watersheds (Hongze and Tiaoxi) to Hongze and Taihu Lake in Eastern China were analyzed by the sequential extraction procedure. Five fractions of sedimentary phosphorus, including freely sorbed phosphorus (NH4Cl-P), redox-sensitive phosphorus (BD-P), bound phosphorus metal oxide (NaOH-P), bound phosphorus calcium (HCl-P), and residual phosphorus (Res-P) were all analyzed. The orders of rankings for the P fractions of the rivers Anhe and Suihe were HCl-P > NaOH-P > BD-P > NH4Cl-P and HCl-P > BD-P > NaOH-P > NH4Cl-P, respectively. For the rank order of the Hongze watershed, HCl-P was higher while the NH4Cl-P contents were significantly lower. The rank order for the Dongtiaoxi River was NaOH-P > HCl-P > BD-P > NH4Cl-P, and that of Xitiaoxi River was NaOH-P > BD-P > HCl-P > NH4Cl-P. Compared with the phosphorus forms of the Tiaoxi watershed, NaOH-P contents were significantly higher compared to HCl-P, which was significantly higher in the Hongze watershed. In comparison, NH4Cl-P contents were significantly lower in both. Variations may be attributed to differential discharge of the P form in the watershed due to land-use changes and urban river ambient conditions.

Abstract:
En este artículo se presenta los resultados de un programa de investigación en que se cuantifican y analizan los procesos y mecanismos involucrados en la dinámica de regeneración de la especie de bosque húmedo tropical D. oleifera. Los resultados de las observaciones de campo indican que las semillas fueron acumuladas por murciélagos bajo palmas donde éstos perchan. De estas semillas, una fracción fue consumida por mamíferos terrestres y otra fue dispersada al no ser encontrada; la dispersión de semillas por mamíferos terrestres redujo la probabilidad de mortalidad de semillas. Los resultados muestran que la dispersión de semillas lejos del árbol congénere más cercano se correlaciona con altas tasas de sobrevivencia de plántulas y bajas tasas de daño causado por herbivoría insectívora. La presencia de arañas en plántulas se correlacionó con niveles bajos de herbivoría insectívora. Vástago, el estadio de crecimiento subsiguiente, presentó una distribución de reclutamiento al azar y bajas tasas de herbivoría insectívora. Abstract:
Massey University assumed management responsibility for "Riverside", a 723 ha sheep and beef cattle farm 8 km north of Masterton in Master-ton in March 1978. The farm is leased to the University under the terms of the will of the late Mr Sydney Campbell to assist in the accumulation, expansion and dissemination of knowledge about agriculture, with particular emphasis on agriculture in the Wairarapa. A lo-year farm development programme instigated in 1978 resulted in the sale of the beef herd and the winter stocking rate of sheep being increased to 15.1 suiha by 1984 (9.7 sulha in 1978). In 1985 stocking rates were sharply reduced following a severe drought and the current mixed 2-year bull beef and breeding ewe policy was introduced. Recent research has focused on drought-tolerant pasture species. In late 1992 sheep and beef cattle farmers (n=lOO) were surveyed to identify local information needs and how Riverside could continue to serve the region's research and extension requirements.
