Abstract:
Findings are summarized from an investigation performed to evaluate the suitability of a wheel-tracking device known as the asphalt pavement analyzer (APA) for assessing the rutting potential of asphalt mixes. The evaluation process consisted of correlating the APA’s predicted rutting with known field measurements. The correlation between beam and gyratory samples and the testing variability were also investigated. In addition, the APA test results were compared with those obtained using the Georgia loaded-wheel tester. The findings of this investigation indicated that the APA may be an effect

Environmental Context. Groundwater remediation is generally a costly, long-term process. In situ remediation using permeable reactive barriers, through which the groundwaters pass, is a potential solution. For redox-sensitive contaminants in groundwater, a metallic iron barrier (zerovalent iron, ZVI) can immobilize or degrade these dissolved pollutants. Scrap iron materials are a low-cost ZVI material but, because of the wide variation of scrap metal compositions, testing methods for characterizing the corrosion behaviour need to be developed. Abstract. Zerovalent iron (ZVI) has been proposed

In market-driven requirements engineering requirements are elicited from various internal and external sources. These sources may include engineers, marketing teams, customers etc. This results in a collection of requirements at multiple levels of abstractions. The Requirements Abstraction Model (RAM) is a Market Driven Requirements Engineering (MDRE) model that helps in managing requirements by organizing them at four levels (product, feature, function and component) of abstraction. The model is adaptable and can be tailored to meet the needs of the various organizations e.g. number of abstra

Abstract This chapter discusses the utility of nematodes in experimental ecotoxicology, and specifically in the study of freshwaters. Drawing on reports in which nematodes were used as test organisms in single-species tests as well as studies investigating nematode communities in model ecosystems (i.e. microcosms), the suitability of nematode-based experimental approaches in prospective and retrospective risk assessments of chemicals in freshwater sediments is examined. Several examples are presented of the use of Caenorhabditis elegans as a test organism in single-species bioassays, in order to demonstrate the versatility of this nematode for ecotoxicological investigations.

Abstract:
Abstract Rocket wake flows were under investigation within the Collaborative Research Centre SFB/TRR40 since the year 2009. The current paper summarizes the work conducted during its third and final funding period from 2017 to 2020. During that phase, focus was laid on establishing a new test environment at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) Cologne in order to improve the similarity of experimental rocket wake flow–jet interaction testing by utilizing hydrogen–oxygen combustion implemented into the wind tunnel model. The new facility was characterized during tests with the rocket combustor model HOC1 in static environment. The tests were conducted under relevant operating conditions to demonstrate the design’s suitability. During the first wind tunnel tests, interaction of subsonic ambient flow at Mach 0.8 with a hot exhaust jet of approx. 920 K was compared to previously investigated cold plume interaction tests using pressurized air at ambient temperature. The comparison revealed significant differences in the dynamic response of the wake flow field on the different types of exhaust plume simulation.

Abstract:
Abstract 'Quality' of greenhouse and hydroponic produce implies suitability for a particular purpose or the degree to which certain set standards are met. Aspects of produce quality may encompass sensory properties (appearance, texture, taste and aroma), nutritive values, chemical constituents, mechanical properties, functional properties and defects. Quality standards and testing methods have been developed for most commercial crops to help ensure consumers receive produce of a suitable standard. These quality standards can range from basic grading for removal of damaged produce and for size, shape, weight and overall appearance, to analytical testing for compositional factors such as acidity, volatiles, dry matter, starch and sugars, toxins, vitamins and minerals, and others. This chapter discusses the components of crop quality, quality improvement, cultural practices to improve greenhouse produce quality (nutrient solution electrical conductivity levels, salinity and deficit irrigation), environmental conditions (including light and temperature) affecting quality of greenhouse crops, role of genetics in the quality of greenhouse-grown produce, microbial quality and food safety. Different quality testing and grading methods are described such as colour analysis, total soluble solids (Brix) testing, sensory evaluation of compositional quality, volatiles testing (aroma), texture and firmness quality assessment.
