Abstract:
A substantial body of research has been conducted on increasing EFL students’ motivation in EFL classes. Different pedagogical techniques have been defined, and humour is undoubtedly one of them. For English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classroom, various methods have been found effective, and humour is also one of the effective techniques to help the learning process in EFL classrooms. This paper is an extraction from the Ph.D. dissertation of the author, entitled “‘Investigating the Use of Humour in Teaching Kurdish EFL University Students in Sulaimani City’, in which it was attempted to investigate the role of humour on EFL students in Sulaimani City universities. The current article is based on the hypothesis that humour is a highly effective technique that motivates students and helps them in learning in EFL classrooms. The role of humour in EFL classrooms with Kurdish backgrounds needs more investigation. The current paper emphasizes the role of humour on motivation from the perspectives of EFL first-year students from Sulaimani Polytechnic University (SPU). A quantitative method was employed in which 100 students were given a 30-item questionnaire to explore their perspectives on the use of humour. The study finds that a considerably high number of the students were in favour of humour to be used by their teachers during their classes as they find it very helpful and motivational, which helps them in the language learning process.

Abstract:
As the key component of success and achievement, persuasive strategies are used in academic discourse. The purpose of this paper is to investigate how persuasive strategies are employed in academic discourse for achieving development and success. In this research, a mixed-method is used to collect data, and the researcher adopted Connor and Lauer's (1985) theory to analyze the data. The data of this paper consists of three public academic speeches, delivered on the same occasion 'Graduation Ceremony' by the rectors of three top universities; Dr Muslih Mustafa previous president of Soran University, Dr Bruce W. Ferguson president of American University of Sulaimani and Dr Dawood Sulaiman Atrushi president of Duhok University, in Kurdistan Region, ranked as first, second and third, according to UniRank (2021). Despite facing some challenges, the findings of this study demonstrated that the three rectors have a positive attitude towards the use of persuasive strategies. That is, they employed persuasive strategies, but they treated them differently in their speeches, as significant tools for encouraging their university staff to do more research with high quality and having considerable citations which in turn resulted in having topped the identified universities via meeting the UniRank selection criteria during the academic year of 2020-2021.

Abstract:
Abstract—The present study highlights the main challenges faced by EFL student teachers (STs) of the Department of English - College of Basic Education - University of Sulaimani during their teaching practice. To investigate the challenges, a closed-ended questionnaire is designed which consists of 20 items focusing on a variety of relevant issues of practicum experience. The questionnaire is given to 50 EFL STs and the collected data is statistically analyzed. The study hypothesizes that EFL STs might have serious challenges in their teaching at basic schools, which could be related to the lack of motivation of basic school students, shortage of practicum period, supervisors’ evaluation, and lack of teaching technology. These challenges are proved true after the analysis of the data. Based on the conclusions of this current study, it is recommended that Kurdish EFL STs should be familiarized with different aspects of teaching profession. To this end, the university stakeholders should design a specialized program for ST practicum and create a strong link with basic school programs. The conclusions and recommendations could be taken into consideration by the STs, university teaching staff, and basic school principals to overcome the challenges and improve the practicum process. Thus, the study could have potentially significant implications for the senior administrators of the Department of English, College of Basic Education deanery, and the University of Sulaimani presidency for addressing the main challenges of practicum faced by EFL STs.

DOI: https://doi.org/10.17656/sdj.10153 Abstract Objective: Full-mouth clinical periodontal evaluations in large surveys may not be practicable. Therefore, the questionnaire can be used to reduce cost and time. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate two previously used questionnaires to determine periodontitis and compare them in the Kurdish population. Methods: The two different questionnaires used were previously examined in different populations. Full mouth periodontal examination of bleeding on probing, pocket depth, clinical attachment loss, furcation involvement, and recession were recorded. The case definition of periodontitis is based on the 2017 classification. The receiver operating characteristic curve, area under the curve (AUC), and logistic regression were used to examine the validity of each questionnaire. Results: Self-reported questionnaires had a useful discriminative capability for detecting periodontitis patients. In questionnaire1, (Q1) has the uppermost true positive result (79.2%), and the strongest crude associations were seen for Q3 (17.72) and 4 (10.9). Whereas, in questionnaire 2, the most frequent positive response was to the Q12 (77.2%), and the strongest crude associations were detected for the Q2 (13.76%) and Q6 (20.78%). The combinations of questions revealed increasing the AUC. Conclusions: The use of several self-reported questions revealed a good performance for screening periodontitis in the Kurdish population, especially those related to patient awareness about periodontal disease, bleeding of the gum, treatment, and diagnosis that had been carried out for patients previously by a dentist.

Abstract:
To investigate the best N fertilizer application regime for the environment and the economy. Therefore, a field experiment was conducted for one year (2020–2021) under the rain-fed condition at two locations in the Sulaimani region; Qlyasan research field of the College of Agriculture Engineering University of Sulaimani and the Kanipanka research station in the Sharazoor valley to determine the effect of the application of 120 kg ha-1 N in four split doses (T6) at four growing stages, sowing, tillering, booting, and spiking, respectively. Were T1 (60 kg ha-1 N at sowing, 60 kg ha-1 N at tillering) used as a control, T2 (60 kg ha-1 N at sowing, 30 kg ha-1 N at tillering, 30 kg ha-1 N at booting), T3 (60 kg ha-1 N at sowing, 30 kg ha-1 N at tillering, 30 kg ha-1 N at spiking), T4 (60 kg ha-1 N at sowing, 20 kg ha-1 N at tillering, 20 kg ha-1 N booting, 20 kg ha-1 N at spiking), T5 (40 kg ha-1 N at sowing,30 kg ha-1 N at tillering, 30 kg ha-1 N at booting, 20 kg N ha-1 N at spiking) and T6 (40 kg ha-1 N at sowing, 40 kg ha-1 N at tillering, 40 kg ha-1 N at booting) and their effect on grain yield and it’s components of bread wheat cultivars (Adana-99, Hawler-4, and Sulaimani-2). A split plot arrangement within Randomimized Complete Block Design with three replicates was used. The possible comparison among the means was calculated following the Duncan test at a significant level of 0.05. As part of grain yield, no. of spikes m-2, no. of grains.spike, thousand-grain weight (g) (TGW), grain yield ton ha-1 (GY), biological yield ton ha-1 (BY), and Harvest Index (H.I) were all calculated. As the average of both locations of the results showed that the impact of Cultivars on agronomic traits was significant, Sulaimani-2 produced the maximum values for all characters, with the exception of (TGW) and (H.I), which were provided by Hawler-4. All the bread wheat characters were significantly influenced by the time of application of nitrogen, where T5 produced the maximum value for all characters with the exception no. of spike m-2, where T6 had the ultimate value. The no. of spikes m-2 had a significant effect on the T4, and T5 study characters. Based on what we've found, the best combination is Sulaimani-2 with T6 and T5 except in Qlyasan location with T6 only when rain is guaranteed. This increases both the yield and its components.

Abstract:
It is known that the service quality is the main parameter of every service providing organization for survival. Therefore, the organizations must evaluate their service quality periodically and plan for improvement. While evaluating their service quality, companies should rely not only on the end users’ evaluations but also on the gap between the service providers’ perception and the customers’ perception about the service quality level. The study aims to compare the service providing perceptions of department/unit managers and the service quality evaluations of students at private universities. For this purpose, we used the ServQual survey questionnaire to assess all service providing academic and administrative units of Tishk International University (formerly known as Ishik University). The data have been collected in two phases; first, we gave the ServQual survey questionnaire to managers and employees of each department/unit. The survey contained questions about the opinions of managers and employees about how quality service has been delivered in their unit. In this context, cafeteria, students’ affairs, dean of students, academic department of student, and accounting unit were evaluated. Second, ServQual was modified for the students to evaluate the service quality that they perceive in those units. Finally, the evaluated results of the managers and the students were subtracted from each other, and the gap was determined. Based on the results, we gave some suggestions to the administration.

Abstract:
This experiment was conducted at the research field of College of Agricultural Engineering Sciences-University of Sulaimani at Bakrajo, Sulaimani, Iraq during the growing season of 2016-2017 to assess the effect of three-row spaces (10, 15 and 20) cm and three plant densities (160, 200 and 240) kg/ha with their interaction on grain yield and yield components of two bread wheat cultivars (Adana-99 and Aras). For each trait, ranges of statistical analysis were performed, including a Factorial Experiment in a Completely Randomized Block Design (CRBD) with three replications. At a 5% significance level, mean comparisons were done using the least significant difference (L.S.D). Plant height, number of spikes/m2, spike length, spike weight, number of spikelets/spike, number of grain/spike, the weight of grain/spike, 1000-grain weight, harvest index, biological yield, and grain yield were all calculated as part of grain yield. The results show that row spaces have a significant impact on the studied characters, with 10 cm producing the highest values for all characteristics except the number of spikes/m2, spike length, and harvest index, which were provided by 15 cm. With the exception of the number of spikes/m2, spike length, and biological yields, the impact of varieties on agronomic traits was significant; the Adana-99 variety provided maximum values for all of the studied characters. With the exception of spike length, where 200kg/ha density had the ultimate value, plant density had a major impact on the studied characters, with 160kg/ha density producing maximum values for almost all of the characters, and 240kg/ha density producing maximum values for the number of spikes/m2 and biological yield. Based on our findings, the Adana-99 cultivar should be sown at a seed rate of 160 kg/ha with a 10 cm inter-row spacing in Bakrajo, Sulaimani Region under guaranteed rained conditions.
