Full textOur work is centred around two principal objectives : a fundamental study of polysulfure of the RSxR' (x = 1,2,. . . ) variety ; a study of industrial applications of these compounds in the area of lubrication. During the first phase we have distinguished two main categories of reaction : those leading to pure compounds ; those leading to mixtures which may eventually have industrial uses. We have studied these compounds by 13C NMR and defined an ortho effect for the ortho-distributed aromatic compounds. The study of these compounds by mass spectrometry permits one to correlate the behavior of these additives under electron bombardment with their behavior in mechanical tests. We have also prepared in our laboratory several phenolic (poly) sulfurs which have anti-wear and high pressure properties, in addition to anti-oxidant additive potential due to the presence of the phenol -OH moiety which is encumbered
