Abstract:
The literature on acid rain provides evidence that large (>5 μm) alkaline particles in the atmosphere, which derived from surface soil, play an important role in mitigating the effect of acid rain. Not only do they help to neutralize acidity but they also are a source of nutrients to the terrestrial and aquatic environments. While ground-up limestone has been added to the forests and the lakes of regions deficient in alkalinity, this mode of application is prohibitively expensive. Abstract:
Air pollution by sulfur dioxide is of great concern due to its harmful effects on environment, human beings, fauna and flora. Fossil-fuel-fired power plants are one of the major sources of SO2 emissions. Typically the concentration of SO2 in the flue gases of these plants is in the range of 2000 to 20000 ppm. Flue gas desulfurisation is one of the widely practiced strategies to control SO2 emissions. Aqueous phase oxidation of sulfur dioxide catalysed by carbonaceous particles is an attractive alternative to the conventional processes for flue gas desulfurisation because, amongst other reasons

The gradual depletion of and dependence on fossil fuels, air pollution and global warming have all accelerated the development of alternative energy systems which use hydrogen as an energy carrier. The hybrid sulphur cycle (HyS) is the foremost electrothermochemical process that can produce hydrogen as the energy carrier. The HyS cycle consists of two units, namely the sulphuric acid decomposition reactor and the sulphur dioxide electrolyser (SDE). The SDE is responsible for the SO2 electrooxidation to sulphuric acid and protons at the anode and the electro–reduction of protons to hydrogen at

The Fe(II) regeneration process is an important aspect of Alternate Anode Reaction Technology (AART) using Fe(II)/Fe(III)-SO2 reactions for copper hydrometallurgy; however little has been done to study it specifically. The process regenerates Fe(II) via Fe(III) reduction by SO2(aq), catalyzed by activated carbon particles. To better understand and improve the process, two studies have been conducted with respect to variable factors and their affects on the regeneration. A study of fundamental kinetics confirms that the regeneration reaction is mass transfer-controlled, requiring adsorption

Sulfur dioxide (SO₂), a well-known pollutant emitted from fossil fuel combustion, has major adverse health and environmental impacts. It is harmful at low concentration with a permissible exposure limit of two ppm for the eight-hour time-weighted average (TWA) value. Fortunately, its atmospheric concentration, like other air pollutants, has gradually reduced in Canada in the past years. However, despite the well-established flue gas desulfurization technologies, they have the disadvantages of being energy-intensive, not very efficient to achieve very low concentrations (at ppm level) and they
