Abstract:
This article investigates the way Saint Thomas Aquinas studies the saving act of Jesus (at question 48 of his Summa theologiae, Tertia Pars). By sinthetizing the Biblical expressions in five central theological categories, he renders them relative because each only makes sense when related to the others, and he prefers that which considers the saving act of Jesus as an efficient cause. But, what does that mean? Finally, this article aims at finding out whether despite its typical 13th century language, this text of the Summa can be considered updated and important to Christian Soteriology.

Abstract:
This article argues that Thomas Aquinas is to be interpreted as holding that the beatific vision of the saints is causally dependent on the glorified humanity of Christ. It opposes the view that, for Aquinas, Christ’s humanity has causal significance only for those who are being brought to the beatific vision by grace, and not for those who have attained this vision, such that there is a Christological deficit in Aquinas’s eschatology. The argument proceeds somewhat in the manner of an article of Aquinas’s Summa Theologiae. Having briefly outlined the recent debate, especially the contribution of Hans Boersma, two objections are put against my position. A sed contra is formulated on the basis of quotations from the Summa. The responsio is based on Aquinas’s extensive use of a philosophical ‘principle of the maximum’ and its particular application by Aquinas to grace. After replies to the objections, based on the method and structure of the Summa, I locate Aquinas’s position in the debate on Christ’s heavenly mediation between that of John Calvin and that of John Owen and Jonathan Edwards.

Abstract:
AbstractRecent discussion regarding the beatific vision has concerned the object of the vision. Thomas Aquinas represents a robust account of the beatific vision according to which God will be seen in his essence by saints and angels in heaven. Others, however, have worried that such a view risks imperilling divine transcendence and incomprehensibility and favour instead an understanding of the beatific vision that is christologically oriented. This article offers a defence of the claim that we will see God's essence in heaven. First, it draws attention to various distinctions in Thomas Aquinas’ Summa Theologiae concerning how we see the divine essence in heaven. Then, it demonstrates points of continuity between Thomas’ account and that of later Protestants, particularly Calvin and Turretin. Third, following Simon Gaine, it argues that Thomas’ account of the beatific vision is not christologically deficient. Finally, it argues that Thomas’ account has biblical support.

Abstract:
AbstractJohn Milbank is one of the most recent and arguably most radical proponents of an understanding of nature as graced. This article critically examines Milbank's understanding of nature and grace, specifically as elaborated within his reading of Thomas Aquinas. In the first part I will outline Aquinas's most direct discussions of nature and grace in the Summa Theologica, drawing attention to several central, albeit subtle, distinctions that these contain. In the second and third parts, I will examine Milbank's reading of Aquinas in Truth in Aquinas, and examine whether it adequately reflects and negotiates Aquinas's distinctions. On this basis I will argue Milbank's reading, while drawing attention to some important and often neglected areas of Aquinas's thought, ultimately remains limited.

dynasties, Jesuit Lodovico Buglio brought St. Thomas Aquinas’ monumental work, Summa Theologica, to China, translating parts into Chaoxingxueyao. Modern scholars predominantly rely on Latin texts and utilize multiple languages (German, French, Spanish, Italian, English) to complete the Summa Theologica according to the original orchestration. Examining the Chinese version of Summa Theologica, one can find abundant references to the Chaoxingxueyao translation. Comparing corresponding chapters in both books reveals the evolution of Aquinas’ theories through different eras and offers a dual foundation for interpreting his theological thoughts. This paper compares the written texts of the devil and human sin in Chaoxingxueyao and Summa Theologica. The author aims to unveil Aquinas’ philosophical reflections on the devil and human evil by analyzing language usage, sentence structures, and topics, thereby contributing to the comprehensive study of devil-related themes. Additionally, by conducting a comparative analysis of the depictions of devils in Chinese and Western cultures, it is hoped to shed light on the missionary strategies and the phenomenon of text translation in the context of Chinese and Western cultural integration.

Abstract:
AbstractThis article examines two medieval sermons that examine philosophic and halakhic issues: the Passover sermon of Hasdai Crescas, which discusses the laws of Passover, and a sermon of Zerahia Halevi Saladin, a disciple of Crescas, which probes an aspect of the laws of vows (nedarim). In the analysis of Zerahia’s sermon, a comparison is made between his discussion and Thomas Aquinas’s examination of vows in his Summa Theologica. The comparison establishes the dependency of Zerahia on Aquinas regarding this issue. Likewise, Zerahia’s sermon is compared with Crescas’s, and the relationship between the legal theories of Crescas and Zerahia is investigated. The articles concludes with a brief examination of the significance of the analysis these sermons for understanding of the impact of scholastic sources on Spanish-Jewish philosophy and the relationship between law and philosophy in the writings of Hasdai Crescas and his students.

Abstract:
This article attempts to clarify the thesis by St. Thomas Aquinas, according to which it is possible to prove that the existence of God can be demonstrated. On the basis of the analyses in Summa Theologica I, q.2 and Summa contra gentiles I (I-XV), there is an attempt to understand the meaning and relevance of this thesis, its implications and its philosophical and theological significance. Thomas Aquinas’ analyses underline the importance of distinguishing between a knowledge about the existence of God and one regarding his essence, while highlighting in each case a set of difficulties and lack of knowledge factors. In a context where the idea of confusion plays a central role, Thomas Aquinas tries to show that: a) no matter how confused knowledge about God is and no matter how large the disproportion between the human and divine perspectives, there is an ineradicable notitia Dei, and b) this notice is linked at the same time to the inability to know God’s essenceand the ability to demonstrate His existenceby means of certain effects and traces of His. This all leads to the peculiar demonstration of the existence of a Deus absconditus. It is precisely the discovery of this God who manifests himself and at the same time hides himself that makes it possible to document the pos-sibility of demonstrating that God exists and that constitutes the foundations on which every and any demonstration of the existence of God rests.

The question of the existence of God follows the intellectual development of Saint Thomas Aquinas. It also plays a central role in his Summa Theologica, where the philosopher develops his answer trough “the five ways” of proving the existence of God. This dissertations aims to follow Saint Thomas Aquinas through the journey in developing \"the five ways\", by showing the need and the possibility to prove the existence of God as subject of the holy doctrine.

The theory of knowledge in Aquinas is an interest target of many researchers of the period. Its importance is singular, among other things, due to the disruption that it causes between the established doctrine about knowledge itself, the Augustinian doctrine of divine illumination and some orders, that until that moment, remained faithful to (Augustinian s). This dissertation aims, from the articles five and six from question 84 inserted in the first part of the Summa of theology of Thomas Aquinas, return to this issue that is far from being exhaustedly explored given its richness and complexity. Therefore, we present, at first, the historical context in which the Summa of Theology was written, as well as what it is in its shape and utility. Subsequently, we turn our attention to its first part. In it, Thomas refers to God and to what proceeds from him, better said, the work of the creation and its action in the world, to then, be able to focus on the group of questions regarding human knowledge, ie, questions 84 - 89 Next, we turn our attention to the question 84 and its articles, exposing its structure and systematize, to finally be able to concentrate on the axioms of articles five and six. In them, we realized Thomas skillfully taking advantage of auctoritates technique to harmonize Augustinian and Aristotle thinking regarding the theory studied in this paper

Abstract:
This thesis is engaged in the theme of natural law, especially in sources of natural law - in theories, which are labelled as "classic". The thesis focuses on these theories (Aristotle, stoicism, Thomas Aquinas) and their common points, which are proper to these theories. That is the object of this thesis. These points present the essence of natural law. The first part explains problem of the term "natural law". The second part deals with the classic theories. The third chapter summarises findings of the second part. The fourth part is devoted to the similarity between the classic theories and the modern (enlightenment) theories. This chapter is devoted to the connection between natural law and positive law too.

Abstract This chapter discusses Thomas Aquinas’s attempt to prove the existence of God from experience. The first section introduces Thomas Aquinas and places him in his historical context. The second section explains why Aquinas thinks that God’s existence is self-evident in itself but not self-evident to us. The third section explains why Aquinas thinks that God’s existence can be demonstrated. The fourth section considers the first step in Aquinas’s argument from motion, the premise that things are moved or changed. The fifth section looks at the second step in Aquinas’s argument from motion, the premise that there cannot be an infinite series of moved movers. The sixth section examines Aquinas’s conclusion that an unmoved mover—God—must exist. The final section briefly highlights Aquinas’s argument from design.

Abstract:
Abstract Asynthesis between Roman law and Aristotelian and Thomistic moral philosophy was finally achieved in the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. It was part of a larger intellectual movement: the revival of Thomistic philosophy.’ The movement began in 1503, when a professor at the University of Paris named Pierre Crockaert underwent an intellectual conversion. He rejected the nominalist philosophy of William of Ockham in which he had been educated and turned to that of Thomas Aquinas. He joined the Dominican order to which Thomas himself had belonged. In 1512 he published a commentary on the last part of Thomas’s Summa theologica with the help of his pupil Francisco de Vitoria. Vitoria returned to his native Spain where, as a professor at the University of Salamanca from 1526 until his death in 1546, he founded the so-called Spanish natural law schoo1. He publish. d nothing himself, and his ideas are known only through the handwritten notes of his lectures that have survived. Nevertheless, he trained scores of highly influential pupils. Among them were the jurist Diego de Covarruvias (1512-77) and the theologian Domingo de Soto (1494-1560), the latter a fellow Dominican who had been his pupil in Paris and became his colleague in Salamanca.

Abstract:
Abstract Two realities are intertwined in the context of the Middle Ages: affirmation of the idea of Christianity and the Commercial Revolution. From the middle of the 11th century, the European West presents a process of fragmentation of political power with the rise of the feudal regime, in which local landowners have a higher power than the monarchic authorities (FRANCO JR, 2001), creating a vacuum of political unity and making the Church the only strong and centralized institution in the midst of fragmentation (FOSSIER, POLLY and VAUCHEZ, 2001It is in this context that Christianity takes command of medieval society and begins to dictate rules and conduct for various activities, seeking to link the principles of Jesus with earthly life (PERNOUD, 1997). Concurrently with the strengthening of the power of the Church, the merchants started to be notorious figures in the European West of the XIII century (LE GOFF, 1991), leading the phenomenon of Commercial Revolution, that is, new ways of practicing trade, such as the creation of trading companies, professionalization of the sedentary merchants, emergence of money, bills of exchange, navigation insurance and accounting techniques (LOPEZ, 1986). The emergence of merchants caught the attention of Church intellectuals (NOGUEIRA, 2019) and the new commercial agents were the target of a Christian moralization. The aim of this paper is to present two attempts to regulate commerce in the European West: the first described in the Decree of Gratian – elaborated in the 12th century by the monk and jurist Gratian - and the second in Question 77 of Thomas Aquinas' Summa Theologica.
