Summer camps and school classrooms are intersecting institutions, both complementing the learning lives of young people. Each summer at camp children enjoy recreational, artistic, nature, and adventure programs that can help them acquire important skills that are not always or explicitly taught in the classroom. Campers practice sportsmanship, positive peer relations, social skills, and a sense of belonging. These activities develop the mindsets and noncognitive factors necessary to reduce summer learning loss and increase academic achievement when campers once again return to school as studen

Data on SARS-CoV-2 in children are sparse and sometimes contradictory. In Italy the closing of the school at the end of February 2020 up to June probably contributed to slow the epidemic, but was also associated with an increased risk of mental and physical disruption in children and adolescents. In the Emilia-Romagna Region summer camps were opened starting from the first week of June, even in absence of clear and univocal guidelines. Opening summer camps gave the opportunity to test the health and the educational systems in general and, in particular, the effectiveness of the implemented pre

The proportion of obese and overweight children is alarmingly high. This dictates the need for promoting healthy lifestyle and eating habits in children. Summer camps provide a wide range of activities to improve children’s health. However, methods used to assess children’s nutritional status during a camp session need to be analyzed in depth, and a rationale should be provided for the use of bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) and anthropometric measurements as efficacy criteria for summer camp healthcare. We examined 125 boys and 221 girls aged 8–15 years spending their summer holidays at

Very little research is available on the unique characteristics and outcomes of Christian summer camps, in spite of their prevalence in the industry. The Effective Camp Research Project is a mixed-methods study seeking to close the research gap. This article presents the major findings of the study, detailing the emergence of a distinct Christian camp model with five fundamental characteristics: relational, safe space, participatory, unplugged from home, and faith-centered. A multi-test survey of campers provides compelling evidence for outcomes that are immediate, subsequent, and lasting. Som

Children's health camps are one of the most common forms of summer recreation for children and teenagers. Summer camp is, on the one hand, a form of organizing free time for children of different ages, genders and developmental levels, and on the other hand, it is a space for improving the health and development of a child's artistic, technical, and social creativity. Children's summer camp has its own specificity, which gives it certain advantages over other forms and means of work. The environment of the camp is very different from the usual home or school environment. This is expressed, fir
