Abstract:
This thesis develops a theory of international social closure to examine (i) the politics of membership in status groups – or, clubs – in international society and (ii) the persistence of clubs in international society. This thesis offers new concepts to improve the English School’s understanding of international society, its expansion, and its reproduction. In so doing it also addresses limitations and gaps in the IR status literature and the global governance and diplomacy literatures concerned with clubs and networks. This thesis analyses strategies of exclusion, entry, and incorporation used by actors to deny, attempt, or grant inclusion into clubs as well as the institutional contexts underpinning those clubs. Specifically, this research undertakes a study of instances of exclusion, entry, and incorporation in the context of three clubs: the Family of Civilised Nations, the Great Powers club, and G-summitry. In the first two cases, this research relies primarily on secondary sources while in the case of G-summitry it presents original empirical research gathered through archival research, interviews, and ethnographic participant observation. This thesis presents four main conclusions about the operation of closure: (i) the logics of different closure games are defined by overarching normative institutions of international society; (ii) despite a collectivist closure rule, closure in international society is predominantly individualistic; (iii) actors seeking entry tend to employ deferential entry strategies that reproduce a stratified status quo order; and (iv) incorporation promotes stratification along both functional and cultural lines. This thesis also draws three specific conclusions that run counter to much current scholarship: (i) contemporary international society is neither more open nor less hierarchical than nineteenth century international society; (ii) hierarchy is reproduced to a large degree by entry and incorporation strategies rather than exclusion strategies; and (iii) closure does not run along a ‘west versus the rest’ fault line.

Abstract:
Kraven handlar om allt från hastighet på nätverket till hur nätet är uppdelat för bästa säkerhet kring känslig data.<br>The purpose of this project is to build a local area network for Summit, a company in Kista outside the city of Stockholm, which is also for the use of their customers. The aim was that the local area network should be usable by at least 400 customers simultaneously and that the LAN should be both reliable and secure. I began the project with a pilot study where I researched different methods I could use to help me build the network. Over the course of the project I chose hardware that was suitable for the network’s needs; I configured it; and I documented the whole network. When I was finished with the configuration and documentation I installed the whole network in the building. The result of this project is a huge success as a fully working local area network.  I also managed to implement all the network’s needs described in the specification: everything from the network’s speed to how the network is segmented for the most secure way of handling sensitive data.

Abstract:
During the spring semester 2012 Robin Westlund has accomplished “Controlled interaction for more creative meetings - Summit Flexiwall” with the individual focus on social communication based on visual interaction in future office. The project was a part of the course Degree Project for degree of Bachelor of Science in Innovation and Design Engineering (MSGC12) which includes 22,5 ECTS Credits. The course is a part in the program Innovation and Design Engineering program within the Faculty of Technology and Science at Karlstad University. Assigner of the project was Moelven Eurowand AB with their head office in Örebro. The company manufactures and assembles entire room solutions for offices. Supervisor at the company was Pernilla Irewhärn. Supervisor at Karlstads University was adjunct and program holder Monica Jakobsson. Examiner has been professor at the Faculty of Technology and Science at Karlstad University, Fredrik Thuvander. Moelven Eurowand is the market leading company and intends to maintain that position. To keep that position the company needs to take the lead of developing new room solutions. With that in mind this project was initiated. In the beginning of the project the main focus was to identify the needs on future offices. These were analyzed and summarized. The summary resulted in a vision which was visualized as an adjustable dimmer for fully control of the environment on the individual workplace. The dimmer was vital for further development of a realizable   product and operated as a symbol through the entire project.   Summit Flexiwall is a product developed to satisfy the needs of an office worker in terms of privacy and social interaction. Summit Flexiwall is a flexible panel wall who operates as a screen wall when necessary. The product is designed to encourage spontaneous meetings because these kinds of meetings are the ones who are the most creative and leading the work forward. Summit Flexiwall creates room in a room and because of this very suitable for Moelven Eurowand AB product range.<br>Under vårterminen 2012 har Robin Westlund genomfört ”Kontrollerad interaktion för kreativare möten - Summit Flexiwall” med den självständiga inriktningen social kommunikation utifrån visuell interaktion för framtidens kontor. Produkten skapar rum i rummet och passar således väl in i Moelven Eurowand AB:s produktflora.

Abstract:
The project presented in this report was conducted by Hans Iverlund and was the final thesis of the Study programme in innovation and design engineering at Karlstad University. The project included 22,5 ECTS credits. Parts of the project were carried out in collaboration with Robin Westlund, who also did his final thesis of the Study programme in innovation and design engineering. The project was conducted in collaboration with Moelven Eurowand AB, which is a company that manufactures, sells and installs room solutions consisting of wall systems, door portals and some furniture, mainly for offices. Supervisor from Moelven Eurowand AB was Pernilla Irewährn, tutor from Karlstad University was Monica Jakobsson and examiner for the project was Professor Fredrik Thuvander. Moelven Eurowand AB wished to get better insight for how the future office would look and operate, so that they could develop their future products in the right direction. To gain that insight, the project began with extensive research, consisting of literature studies, field studies and interviews with people that work in offices. Parameters that were identified as important for the future of office were the ability of control over the surroundings and the need for acoustical and visual privacy and social interaction with other people. This resulted in a vision for the future that was visualized with a continuously variable dimmer switch that controls the acoustic environment and the visual interaction with other people in the area in which the individual office employee is located. The dimmer switch became the aim for the development of a product that would fit into this vision for the future. The product development was carried out using a list of demands, idea generation and a systematic generation of concepts. The product that was developed was called Summit Flexiwall, and was a flexible panel-wall solution that enabled control of the acoustic environment and the amount of social interaction.

"Shared displays to support collaborative exploration of ocean summits." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/711.

Abstract:
In group decision support systems, understanding the roles, dynamics and relationships between participants is imperative to streamlining the decision-making process. This is especially true when decision makers have varying interests. Research has shown that decision-making processes amongst groups with varying interests will often reach bottlenecks with issues, such as unwillingness to share information, or a limited ability of the participants to share ideas at the same time. We explored this research territory of group decision-making by implementing collaboration software to support Ocean Summits, a new approach that uses real-time simulations as part of the decision-making process for stakeholders to explore fisheries management policies. The research reported in this thesis has three goals: (1) to better understand the decision-making process in fisheries management, (2) to build a prototype system to tackle the major issues in the decision-making process and (3) to determine the best way to share and display information critical to the stakeholders' decision-making process by exploring the use of shared screens and information in comparison to private displays. We discovered that the use of shared screens with shared information yielded the best results, as opposed to private screens with shared information or private screens with private information. It was observed that sharing information allowed participants to explore more alternative solutions.
