Full textThe study was about assessing the dropout rate of children who are heads of households at Mandela Village in Tshwane Municipality, Gauteng Province. Given the number of orphans who are escalating in each year as a result of HIV/AIDS pandemic especially in the Sub Saharan region, the author’s intention was to analyse what are the causes for these children to drop out from school, and what can be done to minimize the dropout rate of these children. All the participants were the children who are heads of households and residents of Mandela Village, East of Mamelodi Township, and Pretoria. Data was collected through in-depth interviews with thirty-one children who are heads of households, as well as with two educators in schools where these children are attending school or were attending school. This was followed by two focus groups with the same children. The intention of using the focus group was to investigate the issues raised during the interviews and to establish an understanding of how the children who are heads of households want to improve their own circumstances. The study findings observed that there were no strong linkages in assisting children who are heads of households between the Department of Social Development and Department of Education in the North Rand Region, Gauteng. Other findings were that the schools have no support programmes or teachers assigned to assist these children to cope with schoolwork. Due to multiplicity of responsibilities they are faced with, they are not copying with their studies.

Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: South Africa boasts significant cumulative public-private partnership experience when compared to other African countries. However, little has been done to investigate the success and failure of implemented projects versus those registered on the National Treasury database. There is a limited amount of documented progress of public-private partnerships in South Africa, these being successes and failures in project implementation as well as the contributing factors for such outcomes, and these would serve as critical lessons for future partnerships. The main objective of this study is to investigate the challenges faced in the implementation of municipal public-private partnerships, especially concerning the City of Tshwane’s accommodation public-private partnership. A case study approach was adopted, reviewing the City of Tshwane’s public-private partnership initiative by looking at some of the reported challenges faced as well as the process followed during the implementation of the project. The results of this research assignment indicate that major strides have been made in acquiring sufficient experience and knowledge relating to public-private partnerships as they relate to the South African environment, and the main project team members, who have been involved long enough to understand the objectives of the project. However, of concern is the constant change of project team members taking into account that for each project phase a new team is established. The implication of this is that project knowledge may be lost due to changes in the structure of the project team. It should be noted that at the submission of this assignment the City of Tshwane accommodation public-private partnership was still in progress and in the initial stages of physical construction.

Full textOne of the results of globalisation is that supply chains are getting longer, in both time and distance. For example, the local bookstore around the corner now competes with the bookstore in the USA. Logistics ties together geographically distant sources and markets. The implications of this are that there is a greater need for efficiency in specifically transportation and distribution networks. The integration of transport infrastructure into a logistics hub is seen as an enabler of distribution on a global basis. A solution to overcome the above complications is the development of logistics hubs as a means to simplify supply chain processes. Logistics hubs are generally defined as integrated centres for transhipment, storage, collection and distribution of goods (Jorgenson, 2007). Universally logistics hubs have intermodal or multi-modal solutions to abridge transportation difficulties and creating seamless movement of goods and in doing so optimising general operations. Freight shipments now have the ability to be consolidated at a central point and distributed from that point to its final destination. This creates added value for freight products. Customers now receive products at the right time, at the right place and in the right quantity, but with the benefit of paying less as a result of economies of scale created by the value added at the logistics hub. Logistics hubs are very well established internationally and many examples exist where these have been successfully built and implemented. This does not suggest that there is one specific recipe to success. Each region has its own demands which need to be satisfied. There are however numerous common characteristics which were identified during the course of the study. It is important for South Africa to integrate existing transport infrastructure to optimise logistics in the country and in doing so, ascertaining itself as a regional logistics hub.

Secondly, identification and incorporation of socioeconomic patterns that promote unbound social interaction with the people of Sunnyside and serve as an activity hub alongside the regenerated Walker Spruit. The third issue is the promotion of living that is energy saving. The fourth issue entails the urban regeneration of Walker Spruit. The argument is that housing typologies adjusted to utilising emerging socio-economic activities will mitigate the housing and energy crises and in turn contribute to a more inclusive South African City that will shake off the shadow of a derived past. Full textThis thesis encompasses the research and subsequent building design of a Design Centre in Sunnyside Pretoria that specializes in the Applied Arts. This educational training facility will form part of a larger arts precinct. This can be achieved by integrating the immediate surrounding areas in a similar manner as that of Arts on Main in Johannesburg. The proposed project is located in an existing (but not fully developed) arts and design precinct in Sunnyside known as Oeverzicht Arts Village. The anchor facility of this complex will be the Design Centre, offering training and education in Industrial and Product Design, Fashion and Footwear Design, Cabinet making or Joinery, as well as other related arts for approximately 240 students. In light of the above approach, the project also entails the design of the surrounding public spaces, as well as the design of the complex as a precinct within the urban context. The site is located on a prominent corner where Berea, Sunnyside and the Central Business District intersect; it is located on the Nelson Mandela corridor which is one of the main arterial routes that feed the city. There is a cluster of residential buildings that were retained from the 1950's when most of the Sunnyside residential buildings were demolished to accommodate high-rise residential developments. These houses have a unique character within the urban context, which is currently obscured because of their scale compared to the surrounding buildings. The placing of the new development on the corner of the site gives it the necessary historical prominence within the current urban context.

Since musical skills are expensive to develop, and not currently taught at school level, a lack of funding results in many impoverished individuals missing out on the opportunity to develop musical skills that could ultimately bring about multiple career opportunities. This dissertation involves the design of a music centre on the periphery of Sunnyside, for surrounding school pupils and local youths. The centre will function as a musical education facility and public meeting space, in an urban district. The development of this new facility would hopefully act as a catalyst for the rejuvenation of the pedestrian walkway next to the Walker Spruit; by integrating and redesigning the green space next to the proposed site

Full textA substantial proportion of the African population is deprived of access to safe and reliable food. Many people in Tshwane currently live with long-term malnutrition, seeing that food insecurity is growing most rapidly in formal urban areas, referred to as food deserts, due to their limited access to food. Designing urban environments for local food security has become imperative. This dissertation presents the design of a research centre to promote a resilient urban food systems in Sunnyside, Pretoria. A combination of high- and low-intensity cultivation methods is integrated into the building to create a balance between optimised crop yield and community participation and education. The holistic integration of systems, people and the built environment aims to create a building that is not merely a machine for living, but a living machine.

Full textEmployers invest significant time and resources in employee selection. However, the effectiveness of the selection is not routinely measured. One measure of such effectiveness is employee turnover. Often selection processes do not identify the best applicant for the organisation. Employee selection techniques often lead to employee turnover because the focus is on filling vacancies rather than finding the best candidate. The human resources selection process is important to short-term and long-term success of an organisation because employees are generally regarded as the most valued assets. Selecting the candidates that fit best has an important impact on an organisation’s success. A well-designed and implemented selection process is one that optimises the selection process. Bad selection costs organisations significant money because of the need to reinvest in the selection process and new employee training. Selection is also important in order for an organisation to keep its competitive edge. However, affirmative action, equal employment opportunity and diversity are not to be considered separate actions or initiatives in the selection process as they are part of governmental requirements. As such, the increasing attention on human resource management in small and medium enterprises is a comparatively recent phenomenon. Organisations have realised that the continuance of business will depend on the quality and management of the human resources they possess. Research has shown that positioning the right person in the right position is one of the crucial issues in organisations. If this does not happen, the organisation will not only suffer financial losses, but it may also lose its competitive edge. The dearth of research into selection as a human resource practice in SMEs with particular emphasis on their employee turnover is probably due to the fact that HR practitioners, the managers and or owners of the SMEs, often ignore personnel or human resource issues, such as recruitment and selection, training and development, participation-enhancing work designs, formal dispute resolution and employee counseling. The majority of the empirical studies on human resources management practices (HRMP) in small businesses are still in an explorative stage and mainly descriptive. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of the selection processes as a human resource management function on employee turnover in small and medium enterprises in Sunnyside, Pretoria. The research methodology used to conduct the study was a combination of a literature review and an empirical study. A non-probability sampling technique involving judgment and convenience sampling procedures was used. The research instrument was a five-point Likert interval scale, which had forty four items and was pretested with 10 persons who were not related to the research sample. The instrument was revised and a pilot survey of 30 questionnaires was administered to respondents one month prior to the main survey. Sections B, C and D were subjected to reliability analysis and the results indicated that the scale has a high reliability value with Cronbach’s alpha of (0.824), (0.520) and (0.910) for sections B, C and D respectively. The reliability analysis suggested that the scale of items C4, C11 and C12 should be reversed. On doing so the alpha value increased to 0.824. For the main survey, 300 questionnaires were administered of which 210 representing 84% response rate were usable for the data analysis. Furthermore, a descriptive analysis of section A was undertaken. Tables depicting frequencies and percentages were used to describe the demographic information of respondents. Inferential statistics, such as factor analysis and bivariate correlations were undertaken on items in sections B, C and D of the research instrument. The empirical investigation indicated that the effect of selection processes on employee turnover was composed of three underlying factors, namely: factors influencing selection procedures; techniques influencing selection procedures; and aspects effecting employee turnover in SMEs. The selection factors were found to be positively correlated to one another but had a negative correlation with the turnover factor. Significant statistical associations were found to be present between the factors and the size of the organisations, marital status, level of educational qualifications, ethnic classification, the extent of influence of the EEA on selection processes, the belief of what the selection process consists of and the frequency of selection process exercises conducted by the SMEs involved.

The prosperity of an adventure tourism company is based on promoting and selling specific activities and experiences that will meet the specific needs and wants of their identified target markets. The objective was to develop a profile of adventure tourists in Pretoria. In today’s highly competitive environment, it is important for adventure tourism companies to develop profiles based demographic, psychographic and behavioural descriptors in order to attain their objectives. Two hundred and fifty adventure tourists who used the products/services of adventure tourism companies within Pretoria participated in this paper. However, because of incomplete self-completing uestionnaires that could affect the outcome of this paper, the sample that actually realised was 234, providing a 93.6% response rate.

Full textThe Department of Justice has sanctioned regional courts to hear divorce cases which were traditionally only heard in the High Court. This address the accessibility to civil services. Four branch courts in Gauteng have been upgraded to full service courts, including Mamelodi. These law reforms will increase the case load for the already over-extended court in Mamelodi, and the dissertation will aim to resolve accommodation short comings and bring the facilities in alignment with full service court standards. As a society we all are affected by or benefit from the protection the law offers. The buildings that facilitate these legal processes are a particularly challenging type of civic complex. The aim is thus not to design a new type of complex merely replacing existing models for the sake of changing existing typologies into something more modern, but rather to offer a proposal motivated by sustainability and guided by the belief that a building which embodies social outcomes should be designed to be a regional response with sensitivity to current conditions.

This heritage building facilitated some of the most pivotal events in apartheid history - the Treason Trial of former president Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, and the Steve Biko Inquest. For decades restoration attempts have not been fruitful, due to the costs involved paired with impractical reuse functions for the building and the surrounding site. This thesis project aims to once again make the Old Synagogue accessible to the public, through suitable incorporation of the building, as well as its site, into the urban fabric. Therefore this document is structured chronologically - as information was acquired through the year, to reach a solution.

Full textThe transport sector accounts for 13% of all greenhouse gas emissions and is one of the few sectors where emissions are still growing. Car use is one of the principal contributors to greenhouse gas emissions in the transport sector. In this research an optimal park and ride facility that reduces automobile traffic congestion within the Central Business District (CBD) of the City Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality was investigated with a view to reducing greenhouse gases and their impact on climate. The use of park and ride transportation system is expected to reduce over 96.2% carbon emission by cars traveling along the A Re Yeng Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) line. Park and ride may be further researched for the feeder systems of the A Re Yeng BRT and within townships in the city of Tshwane metropolitan Municipality.

Waar het die tegnologie gefaal, of het die tegnologie nie gefaal nie, maar die onderwysmodel? Hierdie is van die vrae waarop in hierdie studie gefokus word. Riegelman, Povat, Ott en Piemme (1985:279) stel dit dat kennis elke 3 - 5 jaar verdubbel en dat die tyd verby is dat dosente slegs uitdelers van kennis kan wees. Die hedendaagse student behoort daarom begelei te word om self kennis binne 'n bree raamwerk te vind, en dit kom daarop neer dat die onderwysmodel van hoeronderwysinstellings om vernuwing vra. Die tradisionele dosentgesentreerde onderrigbenadering moet plek maak vir 'n meer studentgesentreerde leerbenadering. Die probleem is egter dat daar tans nog geen riglyne [of model] bestaan vir die gebruik van byvoorbeeld die internet binne so 'n nuwe onderwysbenadering nie. Hierdie studie is daarop gefokus om 'n didakties-verantwoordbare model [riglyne], vir die gebruik van die internet binne 'n multimodus-onderwysbenadering daar te stel, aangesien daar tans nie so 'n model by die Technikon is nie. Hierdie model en riglyne behoort die dosent as onderrig-leerbestuurder in staat te stel om 'n multimodus onderrig-leerprogram te beplan, te ontwikkel, te implementeer en te evalueer. Voordat enige didaktiese model of riglyne egter ontwikkel kan word, is dit noodsaaklik dat vasgestel word vanuit watter vertrekpunt die ontwerp gedoen moet word. [Watter onderrig-leergeleenthede bestaan?] Hierdie model is deur 106 dosente en 437 studente geevalueer om: • die houding van die dosent teenoor die voorgestelde model te bepaal; • die dosent se persepsie van die verskille tussen aanlyn- en kontakonderwysbestuur vas te stel; en • te bepaal of daar enige verskille in die leerervaring(s) van studente bestaan wat onderrig deur middel van 'n internetondersteunde program ontvang, en studente wat 'n kontakprogram ontvang. Laastens is aandag aan 'n aantal verbandhoudende bevindings en aanbevelings wat uit die studie voortvloei, geskenk. Hierdie aspekte het aanleiding tot aanbevelings vir toekomstige navorsing binne die veld gegee.
Various technological developments have taken place in the last century, but most of them had very little or a minimal influence on higher education. It has often been speculated that technology would increase the pass mark and retention of students, but to date that has not happened. Where has technology failed? Or is it not technology that has failed, but, rather, the educational model? These questions will be addressed in this study. The traditional lecturer-centred teaching approach should give way to a more student centred learning approach. However, the problem is that there are not yet guidelines [or a model] for the use of, for example, the Internet in such a new educational approach. In this study, the focus is on the creation of a didactically justifiable model [guidelines] for the use of the Internet in a multi-mode educational approach, since the Technikon currently does not have such a model. This model and these guidelines should enable the lecturer, as the teaching-learning manager, to plan, develop, implement and evaluate a multi-mode teaching-learning programme. However, before any didactic model is, or guidelines are, developed, it is essential to determine the starting point from which the design should be done. In order to arrive at a well-founded starting point, a comprehensive literature study of local and international publications was undertaken, personal interviews were conducted and specialists locally and abroad were visited. In this manner, an illuminating overview was obtained of that which has already been done to deal with the set problem, as described in the previous paragraph. The research for the development of the model (didactic guidelines) was preceded by a three-year institutional study, in the course of which trends, needs and perceptions were debated at an institutional forum chaired by the researcher, namely, the TLTR [Teaching, Learning and Technology Roundtable). The report on this study is divided into six chapters and represent the problems identified by the TLTR, which form the foundation [core] on which the model and guidelines are based. The questions are as follows: • Who are we and how do we currently execute our core task? [How do we teach?] • Who are our clients and what are their needs? [How do they learn and how do they wish to be served?] • How could we use technology to facilitate our task and teach our students effectively without sacrificing quality? [What teaching-learning opportunities are there?] The theoretical study that provides the answers to the above questions is embodied in a model [guidelines] for the use of the Internet within a multi-mode educational approach. This model is then evaluated by 106 lecturers and 437 students to: • Determine the lecturer's attitude to the proposed model, • determine the lecturer's perception of the differences between on-line and contact instruction management, and • determine whether there are any differences in the learning experience(s) of students who receive instruction by means of an Internet-supported programme and students who receive contact instruction. Lastly, attention is given to a number of related findings and recommendations that flow forth from the study. These aspects also lead to recommendations on future research in this field.

Full textThe aim of this thesis is to design a music centre which will contribute to the development of the musical art within the public arena of South Africa. It will serve as a case study for how music education and awareness could be approached. The building will consist of open and enclosed performing spaces, recording studios, classrooms, practice areas, an auditorium and administration facilities. It will act as a vibrant node within the inner city, accompanied by a public square where music and dance will be encouraged. The design will strive towards urban integration within Pretoria Central Business District (CBD), forming part of the current revitalisation plan for the city. It will attempt to form part of the social infrastructure of its context and in turn encourage music awareness to the broader public. Although parts of the CBD have been upgraded, Pretoria CBD is in desperate need of revitalisation. People stream into the inner city each morning and leave it dormant until the next sunrise. Only recently have office blocks been converted into apartments. Nightlife is in its infancy. Introducing events and activities, especially those which is often performed at night, will contribute to what a city should be. Music can be the answer to such a need... Music and dance can let people recognise their shared cultural knowledge and style, in turn which will spearhead unification. This is especially important in regards to the fact of the segregation of not only urban environments, but that of cultural and social isolation.

Full textCertain carbonate bearing formations in the Paleoproterozoic Pretoria Group and its Griqualand West equivalent exhibit remarkable geochemical and stable isotopic signatures. The 8'3Ccarb isotopic signatures from the Duitschland and Silverton Formations exhibit large positive excursions, which seemingly coincide with a significant increase in atmospheric oxygen between 2.4 and 2.0 Ga. The Duitschland Formation with its distinctive basal unconformity is composed primarily of limestone and dolomite units, interbedded with two compositionally different shale units and quartzite. Toward the base of the formation there is a distinct conglomeratic quartzite which forms a sequence boundary above which isotopic and geochemical signatures change dramatically. Normal marine isotopic signatures characterize the lower portion of the succession while above the sequence boundari, the carbonates are enriched in "C. This enrichment, however, appears to be the result of local processes occurring within a closed basin. Furthermore it is apparent that the Duitschland Formation (with its three distinct marker beds) is the equivalent of the Rooihoogte Formation and therefore constitutes the base of the Pretoria Group. The Mooidraai Dolomite Formation which outcrops only locally in the Northern Cape Province, is characterized by fenestral and microbially laminated dolomite. The geochemical properties are relatively homogeneous with increases in the FeO and MnO concentrations, resulting from post depositional diagenesis. The stable isotope signatures of these dolomites represent normal marine signatures. There is, however, a depletion in the 813C and 8180 signatures in the ankeritic and sideritic lithofacies, which suggests that this succession was deposited from a stratified water column with respect to the total dissolved CO2. The positive 6 13C excursion present in the carbonates of the Lucknow Formation in Griqualand West, traditionally grouped with the Olifantshoek Group can be correlated with carbonates near the top of the Silverton Formation in the Transvaal area. The latter also displays distinctly positive 6 43C values. One possibility is that if these successions were deposited in closed anoxic basins and that the isotopic anomalies are the result of local processes such as fermentive diagenesis and methanogenesis. However, the close association of the carbonates with shallow marine orthoquartzites suggests that these were deposited in an open marine system and that the positive 8 !3C values reflect a shift in the composition of the ocean water at the time of deposition of the carbonates at 2.2 Ga. Other carbonates present in the Pretoria Group, namely from the Vermont and Houtenbek Formations, display normal open marine 8' 3C values of close to zero. A systematic stratigraphic compilation of all 6 43C values available from the Transvaal Supergroup indicates that two clear-cut positive 5' 3C excursions are present. These excursions were apparently short-lived and well defined and did not occur over an extended period of time as suggested by earlier studies based on global compilations with large uncertainties in radiometric ages of deposits.

Full textIn view of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, the study examines the need of the touring national soccer teams to have access to training grounds and base camps for their duration of stay in South Africa. Host stadiums will be used exclusively for match day events and training venues will have to be found elsewhere. In this study a proposal is set forth to modernise the Caledonian football grounds into a contemporary, world-class football stadium in preparation for the World Cup. The proposal is for a development according to the 'legacy' system, whereby the facility targets the requirements of the local Arcadia Shepherds Football club, but maintains the potential to be leased as a training ground by partaking teams in the 2010 event, to recuperate the finances required for constructing such a building.

Several studies on e-commerce adoption by small and medium enterprises in developing countries have found that small and medium enterprises are said to be generally lagging behind to large organisations as far as the adoption of e-commerce is concerned. There were studies done on e-commerce adoption. However, no study has been done on e-commerce adoption in Pretoria East. The objectives of the study were to determine the current level of e-commerce adoption by small and medium enterprises in Pretoria East. The study assessed whether the influence of factors such as relative advantage, competitive pressure, IT knowledge, security and government support motivates the adoption of e-commerce by small and medium enterprises in Pretoria East and the relative importance thereof.

Full textThis design dissertation will deal with the making of an Open Information and Educational Resource Center to function as an information hub in central Pretoria for local educational facilities as well as the general public. The dissertation proposes a new information building type in South Africa within which local educational facilities would be accommodated and would serve as a community hub. Located on the south eastern periphery of Pretoria's Central Districts, surrounded by the inner city residential areas, the facility does not replace the existing city libraries but merely supplements them by addressing current technological needs. In the proposed building, the designer attempts to rehabilitate/establish a public nodal area while incorporating research with regard to sustainable architecture. The facility aims to create a hypothetical architectural model which can address built environment issues regarding information literacy. Part of the investigation includes the development of a central community related educational hub.
