Abstract:

Abstract:
The dissertation attempted to study Yingxi Fiction, a genre of fiction, which emerged and prevailed in Shanghai during the early two decades of the twentieth century. The majority of writers of Yingxi fiction at that time were literati of the Mandarin Duck and Butterfly School. After watching the imported silent movies, they recorded the contents and adapted them as fictional texts for the purpose of introducing the stories to those who could not afford to watch the films. This type of genre was named Yingxi fiction and had been welcomed by public readers at leisure. In fact Yingxi fiction had implied how traditional literati received and absorbed western cultural elements on their way to pursue Chinese modernity. This study would like to conduct a close examination of Yingxi fiction, which has been previously ignored, through in-depth analysis of the texts and investigation of its social as well as cultural significance. This dissertation consisted of five chapters. Chapter One was an introduction of the popular fiction, movie and Yingxi fiction in Early Republican China. Previous studies on Yingxi fiction were briefly presented as well. Chapter Two dealt with the emergence of Yingxi fiction. The prefaces and peer reviews of some works of this genre would be especially studied in order to explore the motivations of the writers and their approaches to compose the Yingxi fiction. Three Yingxi fiction writers, Zhou Shoujuan (1895-1968), Bao Tianxiao (1875-1973) and Lu Dan’an(1894-1980), were comprehensively illustrated as case studies. Chapter Three focused on the application of “Paradigm” in textual analyses of Yingxi fiction. Serving as an unusual spectacle, paradigm provided a thorough understanding of the hybrid narrative style of the stories. By discussing the narrative pause, redundancy, story modes and language usage, the way in which the paradigm of Chinese fiction influenced by western literature would been exposed. Chapter Four discussed the graph-text conversion in Yingxi fiction. It was suggested that writers’ failure in identifying the moral issues and female images in western movies could be explained and might be regarded as the writers’ skills of adaptation of the stories for the sake of Chinese representations. Lastly, the conclusion chapter summed up the distinctive features of Yingxi fiction, the prominence of the genre and its significance in modern Chinese literature. Besides, the limitations and reasons of fading away of Yingxi fiction would also be expounded.
published_or_final_version
Chinese
Master
Master of Philosophy

Abstract:
This chapter examines internal Sino-Muslim disputes from the late Qing into later Republican China over the question of whether the Sino-Muslims were a separate ethnic group, the Huizu, or rather a religious minority within the Han ethnicity, the Hanzu. Through the writings of Huang Zhenpan, Ding Baochen, Yin Boqing, Xue Wenbo and other Sino-Muslim intellectuals it illuminates the question of Hui ethnic status as a divisive controversy among Sino-Muslim elites during the crucial formative period of modern Chinese national state and identity. Several different interpretations of the Huizu ethnicity emerged from these polemics. Some considered the Huizu as an inclusive Muslim ethnicity, encompassing all Muslim populations in both Eastern China and in the Western borderlands, regardless of linguistic or cultural background. Others regarded the Sino-Muslims as part of the global and Pan-Islamic “Muslim nation,” and still others as including only the culturally Chinese Sinophone Muslim communities. Based on modern Muslim periodicals, this chapter demonstrates the debates’ influence on the Muslim policies of all the 20th century Chinese regimes, including the Guomindang and Communist Party.

Abstract:
<p>Along with building slender and longer span structures, vibration serviceability becomes more important considerations in bridge design and maintenance. In this study, vibration serviceability and deflection limit for long span cable bridges are investigated using long-term monitoring data such as accelerations and displacements of bridges. Exampled bridges are Yi Sun-Sin Grand Bridge (suspension bridge, main span length=1,545m) and 2nd Jindo Grand Bridge (cable stayed bridge, main span length=344m). Long-term data are analyzed and compared with various design codes, guidelines, and other research results. Probability of exceedance are calculated for each criterion. Regarding on deflection limits, Korean Bridge Design Code (Limit State Design) specifies L/400 and L/350 for cable stayed and suspension bridges, respectively. Saadeghvaziri suggested deflection limit based on natural frequency, acceleration limit of 0.5 m/s² and vehicle speed. Various human comfort criteria on vibration are also applied including ISO standards. The results of this study are expected to be useful reference for the design, the proper planning and deflection review of the long span cable bridges around the world. Further researches are required to find the optimum deflection or vibration criteria for long span bridge and their effects on bridge clearance and elevation.</p>

In 55th ISOCARP World Planning Congress, Beyond Metropolis, Jakarta-Bogor, Indonesia. ISOCARP, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.47472/hfqf7018.

Full text
Abstract:
With the establishment of the Constitution of 1988, a new approach to urban governance emerged in Brazil. The document brought significant changes regarding the right to the city and adequate housing, in particular, for the urban poor. The recognition of these rights triggered the experimentation with inclusionary policies around the country (Rolnik and Santoro, 2013). As a result, informal settlements started to be acknowledged as part of the formal city and were included in zoning and planning laws. One of the main outcomes of these experiments was the creation of Special Zones of Social Interest (ZEIS), a land and housing policy that linked investments on infrastructure in precarious settlements to land regularisation processes. In 2001, ZEIS was incorporated into the City Statute, a document that established a range of collective rights to guide land use and development. Since then, the instrument has gained popularity in the country as a land regularisation tool. Nevertheless, a considerable share of settlements remains poorly built and addressing informality is still a challenge. Therefore, this paper evaluated the co-relation between the implementation of ZEIS, land regularisation processes and provision of basic infrastructure in precarious settlements. More specifically, it measured the quality of State interventions supported by the zoning. By focusing on quality, this article aimed to evaluate whether ZEIS has encouraged adequate housing conditions for the urban poor or reinforced precarious patterns of development. To explore this relationship, a case study was conducted on the performance of ZEIS in Favela of Sapé, a settlement in the West of São Paulo. As a methodology, case studies have become a common option for performing evaluations and analyse what a program, practice or police has achieved (Yin, 2012). Moreover, this research strategy commonly relies on various sources of field-based information (Yin, 2012). Accordingly, this paper comprised mainly primary qualitative data. It also made broad use of content and secondary analysis, with the goal of ensuring validity and reliability. The performance of ZEIS in Sapé demonstrated that since its implementation, in 2001, tenure security and physical characteristics have enhanced considerably in the area, particularly, when it comes to housing quality and provision of basic infrastructure. Nevertheless, these accomplishments are being compromised by a strong process of reoccupation which is supported by illegal organisations. In addition, there is a delay of the Municipality in meeting the demands for housing in the area because of governance issues and mismanagement of financial resources. This scenario, combined with a weak inspection body, has once again permitted the development of precarious housing and infrastructure in the area. It also has compromised the issuance of freehold land titles to the settlement’s dwellers. In other words, the site is under a vicious circle where neither the provision of housing and infrastructure is enough to meet the demand nor the land regularisation is completed because of the reoccupations. In sum, although the implementation of ZEIS seems to have a share of responsibility in Sapé’s upgrading process, the local authorities do not have the capacity of reinforcement necessary to maintain these improvements. Furthermore, it is fair to assume that the current legal framework provided by ZEIS is not adequate for the context of São Paulo and requires further adjustments. Not only because of the complex character of the city, but also because in practice, urban norms may be interpreted differently according to political and cultural conditions (Rolnik, 1997).

Abstract:
INTRODUCTION Impulsivity and Alexithymia are related to substance use disorders (SUD) as risk factors (1,2), several cognitive skills are implied in both traits (1,2). However, few researches are published on their mutual relationship in SUD patients. OBJECTIVES To describe the correlations between alexithymia and impulsivity in SUD patients. METHODS Patients with SUD (according to DSM-5) were evaluated with invited to participate in an addiction treatment Ad-Hoc questionnaire, Toronto Alexithymia Scale-20 (TAS-20), Barratt impulsivity scales (BIS-11) and Dickamn functional dysfunctional impulsivity scale (FIDI) were performed in all patients. RESULTS 93 patients completed the full evaluation, the total score of TAS-20 was significantly related to total scores of BIS-11 and FIDI. Analyzing subscales, Difficulty Describing Feelings subscale describe better the association between total TAS-20 scores and impulsivity, and it may be the link between dysfunctional impulsivity and alexithymia. Externally-Oriented Thinking subscale was fewer correlated to any BIS-11 factor compared to the other subscales of TAS-20. Interestingly, cognitive impulsivity is not related to total TAS-20 scores and the TAS-20 subscales. CONCLUSIONS Alexythimia and impulsivity are related in SUD (especially some subfactors are better associated), and hence these relations should be considered when conducting therapeutic approaches. Abstract:
Unstable resonant heave and pitch motions of a floating deep draft platform, under the action of a regular wave with the frequency equal to the sum of the heave and pitch natural frequencies, can be developed by nonlinear instability (Liu, Yan & Yung 2010). The instability is associated with difference-frequency interactions between the body motion and the ambient wave. In this work, we study the effect of the nonlinear instability upon floating platforms with relatively shallow drafts whose wave damping at heave/pitch natural frequencies may not be small. Direct time-domain numerical simulations of wave-structure interactions, which can take into account different levels of nonlinearity effects, are applied to understand the characteristics of the unstable coupled heave/pitch (or heave/roll) resonant motion and its dependence on the key physical factors. In particular, it is found that such a nonlinear instability at other wave conditions involving sum-frequency interactions between the body motion and the ambient wave can also occur. For practical applications, long-time nonlinear simulations with irregular waves are also performed. The results show that depending on the sea conditions and damping in the system, the unstable resonant motion associated with the nonlinear instability can be significant for platforms with shallow drafts.

Abstract:
For liquid jet breakup, when small drops are fragmented from the surface of jet, the fluid’s interfaces with various length scales will coexist in the flow regimes. The paper presents a coupled method to simulate liquid jet breakup. The present method is based on Yan and Che’s strategy which has been proven to be capable for simulation of bubbly-slug flow. In the method, the basic multi-fluid model and interface tracking method are coupled by a unified solution frame work of MCBA-SIMPLE algorithm. The jet phase and continuous liquid phase are combined into a continuous phase in order that the large-scale interface of jet can be reconstructed by VOF/PLIC method. The coupled model consists two sub-models, the model based on VOF method and the conventional multi-fluid model; The relationships and switching of the sub-models are disused and summarized in the paper. Some cases are presented to show the capabilities of the current method. Firstly, the sub-model which is equivalent to the VOF method is used to simulate the interface behavior during the jet breakup and a breakup length equation is correlated. Then the coupled model is applied to the same simulation. A simple jet breakup model is used to simulate mass transfer of drops from jet. Variation of the drop surface area is considered by solving a transport equation. The simulation results preliminarily show that the current method is capable to simulate the complex jet breakup process. The main characteristics of the process such as breakup length and drops distribution are reasonably simulated.
