Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore the relationship between competency-based performance management and organizational effectiveness (OE). It signifies the importance of developing competency-based performance concept in organizations. Since conventional performance management systems (PMSs) are diminishing and as organizations are looking for breakthrough PMSs, this research attempted to fill the gap from stakeholder’s perspective – employee, manager and organization in devising new approach in PMS. Design/methodology/approach The research design involved developing scale for “competency-based superior performance” and validating scale for “organizational effectiveness,” The data for this survey are collected from 292 respondents through structured questionnaire. Hypotheses depicting aforementioned relationships were empirically tested in the context of competency-based performance practices in organizations based in India. Structural equation modeling (SEM) technique was used for data analysis. Findings The empirical results provide methods to accelerate the performance management initiatives based on a leadership competency model (LCM), which are necessary for building performance culture in the organization. The paper contributes by developing a new scale for measuring competency-based performance practices. The scale for OE is revisited. A positive relationship between competency-based superior performance and OE with productivity, adaptability and flexibility has been empirically confirmed using SEM. Research limitations/implications The paper limits the performance measurement concept using leadership competencies. Practical implications The developed model will act as a building block for performance measurement in organizations. This paper promotes LCM to be applied in creating a performance-based culture. Originality/value This is a unique attempt to test the relationship between competency-based performance management and OE.

Full text
Abstract:

This research is motivated by the empirical conditions related to poor performance of human resources in various institutions in Indonesia. This research focuses on the uneven gains of competitive human resources due to workers’ characters which still prioritize routines and the fact that quality-oriented work culture has not been strongly established.. The solution offered is a model of human resource management that emphasizes the interaction between personal and situational factors that are directed at the creation of improved performance and productivity, as stated in behaviourist theory. Based on the above explanation, the aim of this second year research is to measure the effects of the two previously mentioned factors on performance. The research adopted quantitative approach with explanatory survey method. First year research was focused on an exploration with inductive approach to map the determining factors for variables that will build a model of human resource management in achieving superior performance. Second year research used explanatory survey, combining multiple regression analysis techniques to test the causal relation between variables, while the third year research will use Research and Development method to test the hypothetical model. The subjects of this research were employees in educational institutions (Indonesia University of Education and Bandung State Polytechnic ), banks (West Java-Banten Bank and Indonesian People’s Bank), business institutions (Advent Hospital), and government institutions (Local Government Agencies in Bandung). The size of the samples was taken proportionally from each work unit by using proportionate random sampling. The number of units of analysis was 239 respondents determined by Solvin formula. The instruments of this research consisted of questionnaires, interview guide, and documentary study. The instruments were validated by expert judgment. The data were processed with the aid of SPSS version 21 and AMOS to find the causal relationship between variables, and regression analysis to identify variables forming superior performance. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that all personal aspects and situational aspects were proven to have significantly positive effects and contributions to create superior performance. The hypothetical model developed in this first and second year research will be tested in the next year’s research.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine how the moderating effect of uncertainty impacts the relationship of operational responsiveness and firm performance. Research on the relationship of supply chain fit and firm performance is discussed in isolation in different streams of research – such as in studies on responsiveness, agility, flexibility, efficiency and lean – without promptly recognising cross-stream contributions. This, at worst, prevents theory development. Therefore, the authors build a synthesis of literature from these streams. Grounded in the synthesis, a well-positioned empirical study that uses best research practices of past studies on the phenomenon is presented. Design/methodology/approach – A cross-sectional survey sample of 875 Russian manufacturing firms was analysed with hierarchical regression. Findings – The findings show that operational responsiveness leads to superior organisational performance if the relationship is moderated by uncertainty and supply chain responsiveness. Additionally, a direct relationship between operational responsiveness and operational performance was found. These results imply that efficiency is a precursor to responsiveness. Originality/value – This paper contributes to the unification of practice–performance studies on lean, agility, flexibility, efficiency and responsiveness into a single stream of research: supply chain fit. The empirical results support contingency theory in the context of supply chain design. This paper also contributes by shedding light on supply chain dynamics of an under-researched national context. For managers, this paper offers concrete advice on decision-making regarding supply chain strategy trade-offs.
