AbstractWhen Richard Donner's blockbuster Superman arrived in theaters in 1978, critics praised the filmmakers for avoiding camp in their adaptation of the comic book, comparing the film positively to the Batman television series (1966–68) of the previous decade. Several sequels later, critics attributed the series’ diminishing financial returns to its growing investment in camp, an investment that peaked in Jeannot Szwarc's Supergirl spinoff (1984), a critical and commercial misfire. Drawing on the work of camp theorists Susan Sontag, Moe Meyer, and Andrew Ross, I argue that critics have misrepresented the place of camp within the franchise, a misunderstanding stemming from their neglect of the film scores. There are two different yet overlapping forms of camp operating within these films. In their reviews, critics expressed disdain for pop camp, a highly legible form of camp, characterized by overblown performances, that the Batman show popularized in the 1960s. My analyses of Superman and Supergirl center on a subtler camp aesthetic present from the very start that critics celebrated: a playful mismatching of gender signifiers and an undercutting of heteronormative romantic relationships that I refer to as queer camp. I offer queer readings of John Williams's and Jerry Goldsmith's leitmotivic scores for Superman and Supergirl—supposedly the least campy and the campiest films in the franchise—to bring into focus the overlooked political work the series accomplishes. In a bold reclamation of the comic books’ suppressed queer legacy, the films’ queer camp aesthetic subverts the heteronormativity of the protagonists to construct Superman and Supergirl as queers of steel.

Abstract:
Hollywood has produced many super heroes such as Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman. Recently it released a film titled 'Waiting for Superman' which shows a young boy imprisoned within a system and classroom that does not stimulate his learning while actively destroying his motivation and engagement with the educational process. The film implied the task of fixing the problem was so great that only Superman could fix it. So what are the criteria for a super hero? Firstly it is someone with extraordinary powers beyond those of most mortals. In this paper I will propose that most mathematics teachers meet the criteria and are super heroes who combat the spread of darkness and ignorance of mathematics. I will present evidence to prove that most mild mannered mathematics teachers are really super heroes in disguise. Mathematics teachers have super powers. They have the power to understand and value mathematics, something that is beyond the vast majority of the population. What is the basis of their power? It is their mathematics pedagogical and content knowledge. Not only can they do mathematics, but they can construct a learning environment where their students develop conceptual knowledge and deep learning. They use the latest developments in technology to assist their battle with the forces of darkness and innumeracy. While more mathematics has been invented in the last 50 years than in the preceding years of human development, teachers are expected to keep abreast of this new knowledge. Hollywood may be waiting for Superman, but the real super heroes are every day engaged in the battle to reveal to their students the power and the beauty of mathematics that can transform their lives.

AbstractThe Porter hypothesis and the pollution haven hypothesis seem to predict opposite reactions by firms facing environmental regulation, as the first invokes the arising of a win–win solution while the second envisages the possibility for firms to flee abroad. We illustrate the possibility of designing policies (taking the form of either emission taxation or environmental standards) able to eliminate firms’ incentives to relocate their plants abroad and create a parallel incentive for them to deliver a win–win solution by investing either in replacement technologies under emission taxation, or in abatement technologies under an environmental standard. This is worked out in a Cournot supergame in which firms may activate the highest level of collusion compatible with their intertemporal preferences.

Through an engagement with interactions between human cognition and social and natural ecologies, recent South Korean films critique perceived deficiencies in Korean cultural forms and practices. The two eco-themed films that are the main focus of this article, Daeho (The Tiger) and Syupeomaenieotteon Sanai (A Man Who Was Superman), thematize an implicit acquiescence to the environmental status quo within South Korea’s inward-looking culture. A Man Who Was Superman, in particular, articulates nested social structures with the effect that social ecology affords a meta-level for a range of social and ecological issues. The foregrounding of these issues is achieved by disrupting the narrative expectations associated with a particular genre ‐ that is, by modal shifts into magical realism and CGI, by evocations of transcendence and by uses of point-of-view shots that present many scenes from a non-human perspective. In each film, viewer interaction with embodied simulation of affect and emotion produces a response which is simultaneously cognitive, empathic and potentially ethical.

Abstract:
Although most title sequences of Ken Russell's films consist of superimpositions of a static text on film images, the elaborate title sequence to Altered States (1981) was specially designed by Richard Greenberg, who had already acquired a reputation for his innovative typography thanks to his work on Superman (1978) and Alien (1979). Greenberg continued these typographic experiments in Altered States. Although both the film and its title sequence were not personal projects for Russell, a close analysis of the title sequence reveals that it functions as a small narrative unit in its own right, facilitating the transition of the spectator from the outside world of the cinema to the inside world of filmic fiction and functioning as a prospective mise-en-abyme and matrix of all the subsequent narrative representations and sequences of the film to come. By focusing on this aspect of the film, the article indicates how the title sequence to Altered States is tightly interwoven with the aesthetic and thematic structure of the film, even though Russell himself may have had less control over its design than other parts of the film.

Ivår framtida roll som lärare är det av stor vikt att vi ser till barns upplevelser och erfarenheter.Vuxna är viktiga för att hjälpa barn att sortera, ifrågasätta och reflektera kring saker som harhänt. Vårt syfte med undersökningen är att förstå hur TV/film inspirerar barn. Vår huvudfrågaär; På vilket sätt kan vi se att TV/film är en inspirationskälla för barn? Hur yttrar det sig?Underfrågor till denna är; På vilket sätt kan vi se att de inspireras av TV/film i leken?, Huryttrar sig barnens bearbetning av det de sett på TV/film, i leken?, Hur bemöts de barn sominte har sett samma TV/film som de andra barnen i gruppen? För att få fram resultat i studienhar vi använt oss av metodtriangulering. Vi har gjort observationer, intervjuer ochbakgrundsformulär. Studien har gjorts på en förskola, där barn fyra till fem år, lärare ochföräldrar har deltagit. I vår undersökning kunde vi tydligt se att barn influerades av TV/film.Vi såg det i leken men framförallt i samtal.

The essay argues a difference in Superman and Wonder Woman’s superhero images and further discussess the opportunities as well as potential problems the superhero narratives can offer to discuss gender in the EFL classroom.

The Occupy Wall Street protests popularized the notion that “We are the 99 percent” mobilized against the political and economic interests of “the top 1%.” Some protestors wore Guy Fawkes masks in honor of the anarchist hero V, from Alan Moore’s comic book V for Vendetta. The 2016 United States Presidential election saw further evidence of populist unrest, with Democratic Primary candidate Bernie Sanders and Republican Party nominee Donald J. Trump making the economic fears of the beleaguered working- and middle-classes centerpieces of their campaigns. Since populist movements play an increasingly important role in global politics, it is important to consider how the often dismissed and demonized members of the working-classes are represented in popular culture. This book is about how these individuals – and the class conflicts they face in their daily lives – are depicted in comic books and their high-profile film and television adaptations. The essays in this book examine the horror-westerns The Walking Dead and Preacher, and the superhero comics Daredevil, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, Superman, The Fantastic Four, and Guardians of the Galaxy. Superpowered and non-superpowered comic book heroes provide a unique opportunity to reflect upon the emotionally charged issues surrounding “class” in a borderline safe space. The scholars who wrote these essays hope that, by discussing fictional working-class superheroes such as Spider-Man and Lois Lane in both an intellectual and entertaining manner, they will encourage more fruitful and enlightened ways of discussing vitally significant issues of wealth disparity and class identity in the real world.

This chapter examines the historical, cultural, industrial, and technological contexts of stylistic remediation between comics and film. It traces the evolution of these various contexts in relation to remediation of style by focusing on three film cycles that span from the blockbuster period that began with Jaws in 1975 to the contemporary period. These cycles are exemplified by the Superman films of the 1970s and 1980s, the Batman films of the 1980s and 1990s, and what Bob Rehak has defined as the high fidelity adaptations of the late 1990s and early 2000s. The chapter first provides a brief contextual history of comic books, film, and television before the blockbusters (1934–1968) before discussing the three cycles: Superman cycle (1978–1987), Batman cycle (1989–1997), and high-fidelity cycle (2000–2013). It shows that, during the Superman cycle, realism was essentially favored over the more formally flamboyant trajectory of stylistic remediation.

This chapter shows that cultural artifacts like “Superman” can be religiously multivalent, that is, different interpreters find various kinds of symbols and themes when examining the same aesthetic product. To do so, it examines some possibly religious elements within the Richard Donner film Superman: The Movie (1978) in order to demonstrate how some readers/viewers can see Superman as another in a long line of Jewish heroes, while others see him as an obvious Christ figure. It argues that meaning emerges in the complex interaction between interpreter and text, so that meaning is negotiated between certain clues in, and information about, a text, and the experiences and interpretive expertise of the interpreter. Neither the text nor the reader/hearer/viewer is totally responsible for what a given story means.

This chapter considers how Zack Snyder’s film perpetuates the idea that only men constitute humanity. Any deviation from the concept of biological cisgendered males occupying key positions in society are treated as anomalous. Wonder Woman can be as strong as Superman, but physically, she does not disrupt the heterosexual matrix in any way. She is also explicitly mentioned as not being part of the same society or ‘world’ as Batman and Superman, implying that women who are equal to men are an exceptional rarity. Other female characters are reduced to damsels in distress or window dressing. Comparatively, male characters can inhabit the hero role through the demonstration of superior physical strength and a performative suffering that legitimizes their law-breaking vigilantism.

“The letterless canon” argues that Jewish literature from the mid-twentieth century onward is not restricted to fiction, poetry, and theater. The book as a tool for the dissemination of knowledge has undergone a metamorphosis. Along the way, the border between high-brow and popular culture has been erased. Comic strips like Superman and graphic novels can be viewed as literary artifacts. Indeed we should consider the work of Will Eisner (A Contract with God), Art Spiegelman (Maus), and Alison Bechdel (Fun House), each of whom offers different contributions. There is also the matter of stand-up comedy, film scripts, and television shows which examine, from a Jewish perspective, gender, racial, and class issues.

Apesar de reconhecidamente importante para o sucesso de projetos de software, muitas organizações têm negligenciado o processo de Gerência de Riscos (GRI). Isso decorre, dentre outros, do fato de haver diversas visões parciais sobre esse domínio, cada qual adotando um vocabulário próprio, o que dificulta a integração e a comunicação. Para superar essa barreira, é útil definir um modelo conceitual consensual descrevendo os principais conceitos envolvidos no domínio da GRI, com a finalidade de apoiar o entendimento, aprendizado e a comunicação. Uma vez que ontologias podem ser usadas para esse fim, este artigo apresenta uma ontologia de riscos de software, estabelecendo uma conceituação comum acerca do domínio de riscos de software, a qual pode ser adotada por organizações de software como um vocabulário básico para se falar sobre riscos.

Para superar as dificuldades encontradas com relação aos modelos puramente determinísticos ou puramente estocásticos este trabalho propõe a elaboração de um modelo epidêmico misto que permite estratificar a população em grupos, considera as variabilidades demográfica e ambiental, apresenta uma aproximação para os efeitos estocásticos, considera os efeitos das redes de contatos e é compacto para auxiliar nas estratégias de controle e estimação dos parâmetros. Por fim, um conjunto de fluxogramas e simulações serão apresentados para detalhar e verificar o funcionamento do modelo proposto.

Abstract:
Introdução: A impressão de biomateriais tem se mostrado como uma alternativa extremamente viável em um dos campos de maior desenvolvimento nos últimos anos, o da medicina regenerativa. De microambientes, como o molde de células saudáveis, à construção de ossos e órgãos, a bioimpressão possui perspectivas em terapias eletivas como transplantes e regeneração de injúrias, além de atualmente estar presente em âmbitos terapêuticos bem eficientes. Somado à germinação celular em bases de diversos materiais, como hidrogéis e algas (algina) e fatores de crescimento e transcritores genéticos, a tecnologia de impressão 3D se encontra em três métodos consolidados, com outros em desenvolvimento sobretudo em pesquisas 4D na China. Objetivo: Compilação e revisão de casos e estudos clínicos a fim de maior elucidação dos processos regenerativos provenientes da impressão e transplante de biomateriais. Material e métodos: Estudo norteado por publicações de diferentes nateriais em portais de divulgação científica (Scielo, PMC, PubMed) seguido de análise e confecção de resumos. Resultados: A regeneração celular através de moldes 3D é bem documentada em diversos campos da medicina, ainda que diversas limitações ainda estejam presentes para produções de complexos fisiológicos e transplante de órgãos, sendo no âmbito de biodegradação, capacidade plástica e força celular, diversos estudos recentes são publicados e pesquisas realizadas a fim de reunião de diversos tipos celulares e conseguinte ampliação terapêutica. Conclusão: O campo de impressão 3D é um dos mais promissores ao unir tecnologia à medicina em ambientes terapêuticos. Ao produzir diversos tipos celulares e tecidos fisiológicos, a atenção deve se voltar aos prognósticos de diferentes terapias, além de empenho da comunidade científica a fim de superar os obstáculos atualmente propostos, referentes a capacidades físicas e bioquímicas.

Recentemente, muitas cidades estão enfrentando problemas de mobilidade e segurança, comumente relacionados aos congestionamentos e aos índices elevados de incidentes criminais. Muitos sistemas de transporte inteligentes (ITSs) foram desenvolvidos para tratar o problema de mobilidade urbana, ao mesmo tempo, alguns sistemas baseados em segurança foram criados para direcionar veículos e pedestres por rotas mais seguras. Entretanto, a maioria desses sistemas consideram apenas um problema. Portanto, um ITS pode direcionar veículos por ruas perigosas, a fim de evitar congestionamentos, enquanto sistemas baseados em segurança podem guiar veículos para vias congestionadas visando melhorar a segurança dos motoristas e passageiros. Com isso em mente, nesse trabalho propomos #PAS (Por Aqui é mais Seguro), um ITS híbrido que possui conhecimento sobre as condições de tráfego e também sobre os níveis de insegurança nas vias para melhorar a mobilidade urbana e também a segurança dos motoristas e passageiros. Os resultados em um cenário realista mostraram que o #PAS supera as soluções do estado-da-arte para tratar os problemas de mobilidade e segurança nas vias urbanas.

Abstract:
Introdução: O transplante de células-tronco hematopoéticas (TCTH) haploidêntico é realizado entre receptores e doadores que compartilham apenas um haplótipo HLA, apresentando 50% ou um pouco mais de compatibilidade. A doação geralmente é realizada pelos pais ou irmãos do paciente. Esse tipo de transplante está cada vez mais presente nos centros transplantadores brasileiros, devido a imediata disponibilidade do doador e seu baixo custo comparado ao transplante alogênico não aparentado. Objetivo: Descrever a evolução do TCTH haploidêntico e realizar uma análise comparativa com os demais métodos de transplante de células-tronco hematopoiéticas. Material e métodos: Foi realizada uma abrangente revisão bibliográfica sobre o tema, utilizando como base de dados o MEDLINE, SciELO e LILIACS. Resultados: O TCTH haploidêntico mostra resultados compatíveis àqueles observados em outros tipos de transplante de medula óssea. Apesar de apresentar maiores taxas de infecções virais e fúngicas em relação ao HLA-compatível aparentado, o TCTH haploidêntico possui atualmente índices satisfatórios de Doença do Enxerto Contra o Hospedeiro (DECH), sobretudo quando utilizada a profilaxia com ciclofosfamida pós-transplante ou empregadas novas técnicas de manipulação de enxerto. Por fim, o desfecho adequado do TCTH haploidêntico envolve a seleção do melhor doador disponível. Embora não haja consenso sobre o parâmetro de escolha, as incompatibilidades no sistema HLA entre receptor e doador não parecem ser um fator determinante para o insucesso do tratamento. Conclusão: Publicações recentes têm demonstrado formas efetivas de superar a histocompatibilidade parcial presente nos TCTH haploidênticos, caracterizando essa modalidade de transplante uma opção de tratamento com taxas de sobrevida e complicações semelhantes ao transplante com doadores não-aparentados HLA-compatível.

Abstract:
Introdução: O Cromo (Cr) é um metal pesado encontrado naturalmente no meio ambiente, em quantidades traço, na forma de Cr (III). O Cr (VI), comprovadamente cancerígeno, ocorre principalmente através da oxidação do Cr (III) durante alguns processos industriais. O Cr acaba sendo descartado em grandes quantidades como resíduo industrial, na maioria das vezes sem um tratamento adequado, tornando-se um contaminante altamente prejudicial. A biorremediação, uma alternativa sustentável de descontaminação, ocorre através de microrganismos que possuem o potencial de sobreviver a ambientes contaminados e que desenvolvem mecanismos para evitar a toxicidade dos elementos aos quais estão expostos. Objetivos: O presente estudo teve como objetivo verificar a presença e analisar o potencial de crescimento e de remoção de cromo das bactérias resistentes existentes nas raízes de Hymenachne grumosa. Esta macrófita aquática encontrada no Arroio Santa Bárbara (Pelotas, RS, Brasil), apresentou características favoráveis quanto à remediação de Cr em pesquisas anteriormente realizadas para avaliação da qualidade da água no local. Material e métodos: Com as raízes da macrófita selecionada foram realizados testes em meios contendo cromo para verificar a presença de bactérias resistentes. As colônias morfologicamente distintas encontradas foram isoladas e purificadas, a fim de analisar a capacidade de crescimento, através da relação da biomassa (OD600nm) e a contagem das UFC, e também de remoção de Cr, considerando condições como temperatura e tempo de incubação, pH e concentração de Cr no meio. Resultados: As 10 colônias encontradas foram caracterizadas e constatou-se que todas possuem a capacidade de se desenvolverem em meio contendo 50mg.L-1 de cromo e pH 7, incubadas a 30°C por 24h, além de possuírem capacidade de remoção de Cr do meio. Conclusão: Microrganismos encontrados em ambientes contaminados por metais são naturalmente resistentes a tais metais e as bactérias empregam diferentes mecanismos de resistência para superar a toxicidade de Cr no meio ambiente. A variação em diferentes parâmetros físicos, químicos e ambientais afetam a eficiência do processo de biorremediação, tendo impacto direto no sucesso desta técnica. Assim, análises referentes às condições ótimas das bactérias encontradas ainda necessitam ser realizadas, a fim de otimizar a capacidade de remoção deste metal de meios contaminados.

Introdução: A dependência em drogas lícitas e ilícitas é considerada pela Organização Mundial da Saúde (OMS), um problema de saúde pública que atinge diversos países. O presente relato de experiência traz a vivência de uma acadêmica de psicologia em um Centro de Atenção Psicossocial Álcool e Drogas (CAPS AD) na cidade de João Pessoa-PB, um serviço que visa atender usuários com problemas de álcool e drogas. Objetivos: relatar a experiência de estágio em psicologia, bem como, relatar as atividades realizadas com os usuários em um CAPS AD. Material e Métodos: Foi realizada uma pesquisa documental, caracterizada como relato de experiência onde a partir de diários de bordo foram descritas as atividades, oficinas terapêuticas e experiências vividas no período de Estágio em um “Grupo Terapêutico na Atenção Psicossocial Álcool e outras Drogas” na cidade de João Pessoa – PB no ano de 2017. Resultados: No período de estágio foram realizadas pela estagiária e profissionais do serviço, dinâmicas de grupo, atividades educativas e recreativas, com o objetivo de proporcionar aos usuários uma maior interação social, desprendimento, reflexão e diversão. A experiência nos grupos terapêuticos possibilitou a observação de momentos de compartilhamento de informações educativas; diversão; reflexão e de encontro dos usuários consigo mesmo e com o mundo. Através das oficinas realizadas foi possível ver as diferentes formas de lidar com situações frente ao uso das substâncias no decorrer da vida. Alguns usuários demonstraram ainda, o reconhecimento de suas disfunções e fraquezas, e o interesse em reverter sua situação atual, buscando forças na família ou em si mesmo, ressignificando o sofrimento por meio de atividades lúdicas e expressando suas emoções e sentimentos através da criatividade, favorecendo assim, o resgate da vida social. Conclusão: Todos os nossos resultados superaram as nossas expectativas, e foi possível vislumbrar a importância do estágio e de trabalhos que resgatem tais experiências, a fim de divulgar não só o trabalho realizado pelos CAPS, mas também, de grupos terapêuticos que realizam atividades em diferentes instituições de saúde mental, possibilitando aos pacientes e usuários o processo de reintegração social, resgate da autonomia e direitos sociais.
