Abstract:
A new resonant coupling between an analyte-filled core mode and a supermode in a multi-core holey fiber recently designed for sensing of benzene is investigated using a finite element method. The dominant electric field of the fundamental core supermode is in a high degree extended at this resonance from the hexagonal solid cores to the analyte (benzene) layer and vice versa for the analyte-filled fundamental core mode. The full width at half maximum (FWHM) bandwidth for the fundamental supermode is 5.3 nm. When the analyte refractive index is increased by 0.001 RIU, the phase matching point is shifted by 4.5 nm toward longer wavelengths, with a corresponding sensitivity better than 2.2 × 10-5 RIU and a very high value of the signal-to-noise ratio (0.85). The resonance of a fundamental supermode with the first order of surface plasmon resonance mode in the infrared region (λ = 1.33825 μ m ) can be used together with a resonant coupling between a fundamental supermode with an analyte fundamental mode in visible (λ = 0.6415 μ m ) part of the spectrum for increasing the performance of the sensor.

Abstract:
Coherent propagation of supermodes in a multicore fiber is promising for power scaling of fiber laser systems, eliminating the need for the active feedback system to maintain the phases between the channels. We studied the propagation of broadband pulsed radiation at a central wavelength of 1030 nm in a multicore fiber with coupled cores arranged in a square array. We designed and fabricated a silica multicore fiber with a 5 × 5 array of cores. For controllable excitation of a desired supermode, we developed a beam-forming system based on a spatial light modulator. We experimentally measured intensity and phase distributions of the supermodes, in particular, the in-phase and out-of-phase supermodes, which matched well the numerically calculated profiles. We obtained selective excitation and coherent propagation of broadband radiation with the content of the out-of-phase supermode of up to 90% maintained without active feedback. Using three-dimensional numerical modeling with allowance for a refractive index profile similar to those of the developed fiber, we demonstrated stable propagation of the out-of-phase supermode and collapse of the in-phase supermode at a high signal power.

Abstract:
Microlasers in near-degenerate supermodes lay the cornerstone for studies of non-Hermitian physics, novel light sources, and advanced sensors. Recent experiments of the stimulated scattering in supermode microcavities reported beating phenomena, interpreted as dual-mode lasing, which, however, contradicts their single-mode nature due to the clamped pump field. Here, we investigate the supermode Raman laser in a whispering-gallery microcavity and demonstrate experimentally its single-mode lasing behavior with a side-mode suppression ratio (SMSR) up to 37 dB, despite the emergence of near-degenerate supermodes by the backscattering between counterpropagating waves. Moreover, the beating signal is recognized as the transient interference during the switching process between the two supermode lasers. Self-injection is exploited to manipulate the lasing supermodes, where the SMSR is further improved by 15 dB and the laser linewidth is below 100 Hz.

Abstract:
Abstract. The longitudinal variation of salinity and the maximum salinity intrusion length in an alluvial estuary are important environmental concerns for policy makers and managers since they influence water quality, water utilization and agricultural development in estuarine environments and the potential use of water resources in general. The supermoon total lunar eclipse is a rare event. According to NASA, they have only occurred 5 times in the 1900s – in 1910, 1928, 1946, 1964 and 1982. After the 28 September 2015 total lunar eclipse, a Super Blood Moon eclipse will not recur before 8 October 2033. In this paper, for the first time, the impact of the combination of a supermoon and a total lunar eclipse on the salinity intrusion along an estuary is studied. The 28 September 2015 supermoon total lunar eclipse is the focus of this study and the Sebou river estuary (Morocco) is used as an application area. The Sebou estuary is an area with high agricultural potential, is becoming one of the most important industrial zones in Morocco and it is experiencing a salt intrusion problem. Hydrodynamic equations for tidal wave propagation coupled with the Savenije theory and a numerical salinity transport model (HEC-RAS software "Hydrologic Engineering Center River Analysis System") are applied to study the impact of the supermoon total lunar eclipse on the salinity intrusion. Intensive salinity measurements during this extreme event were recorded along the Sebou estuary. Measurements showed a modification of the shape of axial salinity profiles and a notable water elevation rise, compared with normal situations. The two optimization parameters (Van der Burgh's and dispersion coefficients) of the analytical model are estimated based on the Levenberg–Marquardt's algorithm (i.e., solving nonlinear least-squares problems). The salinity transport model was calibrated and validated using field data. The results show that the two models described very well the salt intrusion during the supermoon total lunar eclipse day. A good fit between computed salinity and measurements is obtained, as verified by statistical performance tests. These two models can give a rapid assessment of salinity distribution and consequently help to ensure the safety of the water supply, even during such infrequent astronomical phenomenon.

Abstract:
A trench-assisted multicore fiber (TA-MCF) with single-supermode transmission and nearly zero flattened dispersion is proposed herein. By adding a simplified microstructure cladding with only one ring of low-index inclusions on the basis of the multicore fiber, the microstructure cladding and mode-coupling mechanism were jointly employed into the TA-MCF to modulate light transmission. This guarantees that the TA-MCFs had sufficient capability for wideband dispersion management when only pure, germanium-doped, and fluorine-doped silica glass with low index differences were chosen to form the TA-MCF. Analyses also revealed that the TA-MCFs have the merits of shorter cut-off wavelength and flatter-top optical intensity distribution compared with traditional multicore fibers. After the investigation of the structural parameters’ influences on the dispersion of the fundamental supermode, two TA-MCFs with single-supermode transmission and nearly zero flattened dispersion were designed. For the seven-core TA-MCF, the dispersion varying from −0.46 to 1.35 ps/(nm·km) in the wavelength range of 1.50 to 2.04 μm, with bending loss as low as 0.085 dB/km and 35-mm bending radius at 1550 nm was achieved with index difference less than 0.015. The TA-MCFs proposed herein have the advantages of being a quasi-single material, with an all solid scheme and simplified structure.

Abstract:
Activation of cytotoxic T cells in human requires specific binding of antigenic peptides to human leukocyte antigen (HLA) molecules. HLA is the most polymorphic protein in the human body, currently 1814 different alleles collected in the HLA sequence database at the European Bioinformatics Institute. Most of the HLA molecules recognise different peptides. Also, some peptides can be recognised by several of HLA molecules. In the present project, all available class I HLA alleles are classified into supertypes. Super - binding motifs for peptides binding to some supertypes are defined where binding data are available. A variety of chemometric techniques are used in the project, including 2D and 3D QSAR techniques and different variable selection methods like SIMCA, GOLPE and genetic algorithm. Principal component analysis combined with molecular interaction fields calculation by the program GRID is used in the class I HLA classification. This thesis defines an HLA-A3 supermotif using two QSAR methods: the 3D-QSAR method CoMSIA, and a recently developed 2D-QSAR method, which is named the additive method. Four alleles with high phenotype frequency were included in the study: HLA-A*0301, HLA-A*1101, HLA-A*3101 and HLA- A*6801. An A*020T binding motif is also defined using amino acid descriptors and variable selection methods. Novel peptides have been designed according to the motifs and the binding affinity is tested experimentally. The results of the additive method are used in the online server, MHCPred, to predict binding affinity of unknown peptides. In HLA classification, the HLA-A, B and C molecules are classified into supertypes separately. A total of eight supertypes are observed for class I HLA, including A2, A3, A24, B7, B27, B44, CI and C4 supertype. Using the HLA classification, any newly discovered class I HLA molecule can be grouped into a supertype easily, thus simplifying the experimental function characterisation process.

Abstract:
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disease notably delined bv a default of mechanisms of tissue reparation which are insufficient to establish homeostasis. The active resolution of innammation mediated by macrophage effcrocytosis of apoptotic cells has emerged to propose a new branch of pharmacology named "resolution pharmacology". ln this study. we propose to resolve innammation in a murine model of MS. using the supermatanl issued from the culture between apoptotic cells and macrophages. inducing efferocytosis and the production of pro-resolutive factors (SuperMApo). Here. we demonstrate that injection of SupcrMApo in a model of MS allow the control of the disease correlated with a reduction of the inflammatory inliltrate in the central nervous system. The control of the disease is associated with a reprograrnming of macrophages and pDC, but not cDC, in the spleen, demonstrated by a higher capacity to generate Treg and a lower ability to generate Th 1, and their presence is necessary to the anti-innammatory effect of SupcrMApo. Reprogramming of macrophages and pDC occurs at two main levels. First. an epigenetic control of gene expression induces a modulation of global DNA methylation and a modulation of DNA methylation at the promoter of miRNA implicated in the regulation of immune responses. Secondly, a decreased activation of NFκB activation pathway is observed resulting to a decreased activation of these cells. Thus, this work demonstrates that targeting the resolution of inflammation is an interesting strategy to treat MS

Abstract:
The aim of the proposed study is to examine the effects of the transition into new motherhood and the differences in these effects among American and French primiparous mothers. The study establishes the societal pressures and cultural expectations placed on the motherhood role, historically and to the present day, and presents possible sources for maternal guilt, role strain, and a sense of loss of individuated self in the transition to new motherhood. This mixed methods study uses semi-structured interviews, vignettes, the Job-Family Role Strain Scale, and the Motherhood Salience Scale to determine the effects of the transition into the new mother role. American mothers, compared with French mothers, are expected to feel more societal pressure related to motherhood, practice more intensive mothering, feel more “Supermom” pressure, feel more role strain related to work-family balance, feel more maternal guilt, place motherhood higher on their identity salience hierarchy, and feel more of a loss of individuated self. This research may provide a fuller understanding of the motherhood role and how the shift into new motherhood is felt cross-culturally.

Sun, Xiankai. "Supermode Si/III-V Lasers and Circular Bragg Lasers." Thesis, 2010. https://thesis.library.caltech.edu/5780/2/Xiankai.Sun_thesis_duplex_printing.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:

Semiconductor lasers are arguably the most important component in optical communications. This thesis investigates two types of semiconductor lasers that are useful in integrated optics. Part I focuses on supermode Si/III–V lasers and Part II discusses circular Bragg lasers for the application as surface-emitting lasers.

Just as optical fibers have largely replaced the traditional copper wires in long-distance applications, people started to consider incorporating optical communication onto chips, primarily because the increased ohmic heating and RC delay associated with the metal interconnection prevent further increase in the data-processing rate. Si is well known to be the integration platform for electronics, and III–V materials (GaAs, InP, etc.) are efficient light emitters. It is natural to bring them together to realize the on-chip optical communication. Among various Si/III–V integration schemes the most promising is the hybrid Si evanescent platform in which a wafer-bonding technique that is compatible with current CMOS processing is used to bring Si and III–V materials together. Part I of this thesis focuses on the application of a novel mode-control method to such hybrid waveguide system to enhance the modal gain, which makes for more efficient and, most importantly, shorter devices that may hold the key to the photonics/electronics integration. The supermode theory is derived, the shortest adiabatic mode transformer is theoretically and numerically studied, and the device design and fabrication are presented, followed by the experimental demonstration of the performance enhancement in the mode-controlled Si/InGaAsP laser devices.

Vertical cavity surface emitting lasers are a commercial light source for optical communications, but their single-modedness and good emission pattern are guaranteed only over a very small mode area (diameter of several microns) thus they have limitations in high-power applications. As an alternative, circular Bragg lasers can be designed as a superior surface emitting laser that produces high output power with good beam quality. Part II of this thesis presents a comprehensive and systematic theoretical study on the surface-emitting Hankel-phased circular Bragg lasers in various geometries. The analytical and numerical mode-solving methods will be described, followed by near- and above-threshold modal analyses.

Through a layered account format combining theory, performative autoethnographic vignettes, and dialogical exchanges, the author explores the performances of Supermotherhood as they materialize within her life and potentially within the lives of, and through interactions with, other mothers inside and outside of her immediate peer group. The author analyses the ways the pervasive ideology of perfect mothering manifests itself within motherhood culture, and how it ultimately impacts maternal agency, self worth, and by extension, the family unit, and the culture of motherhood-mothering in general. Guided by a feminist poststructuralist approach, the author argues that the Supermom, or rather, Super Mom meta-identity offers all subjective labels and ideologies of mothering a place to become and celebrate possibility, individuality, transition, and maternal empowerment. In this thesis, we demonstrate that the ultralow supermode noise and single-sided-band (SSB) phase noise characteristics of a harmonically mode-locked (HML) Erbium-doped fiber laser (EDFL) with an intra-cavity semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) and optical band-pass filter (OBPF) are investigated, and are compared to a mutually injection-mode-locking (IML) link of gain-switched Fabry-Perot laser Diode (FPLD) and EDFL with the state-of-the-art performances. With an intra-cavity SOA based high-pass filter driven at unitary gain condition, we primarily demonstrate that the supermode noise suppression ratio (SMNSR) of the HML-EDFL can be simultaneously suppressed to be comparable with that of the FPLD-IML-EDFL without sacrificing the SSB phase noise and jitter performances. The SOA operated at nearly transparent condition enhances the SMNSR of the EDFL to 86 dB at the cost of degrading phase noise (-104.2 dBc/Hz), increasing jitter (1.4 ps), and broadened pulsewidth (61 ps). By adding an OBPF into the ring cavity, the SMNSR, SSB phase noise, jitter and pulsewidth of the SOA filtered HML-EDFL can further be improved to 90 dB, -112 dBc/Hz, 0.7 ps and 42 ps, respectively. The SMNSR performance of the HML-EDFL with SOA and OBPF has already been comparable with that of a FPLD-IML-EDFL link. At last, we use phase lock loop (PLL) and piezo-electric transducer (PZT) controller link to achieve regenerative mode-locked EDFL technique. The SSB phase noise and timing jitter are further analyzed in this experiment.

Abstract:
As an OC teacher and parent, I have learned that making responsible choices is an ongoing process. A few years ago, I envisioned myself as “Supermom.” I made sure my son was getting his nutritious, low-sugar lunch, and I tried to anticipate anything that could come up by laying out his clothes, lunch, and sports equipment the night before. Or I would pack up my other three kids, ages one to five, and drive 20 minutes across town to bring my son his forgotten books, papers, lunches, or sports equipment. I did this at least twice a week. I was great! I gave myself the “Mother of the Year Award.” Then one day Mark’s first-grade OC teacher met me at the classroom door and asked me to consider letting Mark go without lunch the next time he forgot it. She gave me an article to read on teaching kids responsibility. She said that without his sack lunch, he would be forced to find other options; he could charge his lunch in the school cafeteria, or he could ask his friends for help. Could this possibly work? The next time he forgot his lunch, I stayed home and waited, just knowing that he was probably going to starve. However, when he came home he was fine and happy—all of his friends had shared their lunches with him! After that incident, he started putting his own things by the door and getting them ready to go for school. Another day he had to sit on the sidelines at the pool when he forgot his swimming suit. From then on, he remembered to take his own sports equipment. As I allowed my son to experience the logical consequences of his behavior, he learned to be more responsible. Helping children to make responsible choices in school begins with making sure that choices are available, then allowing children to learn from the logical consequences of their choices, with support from adults in reflecting on the process and results. Parents are sometimes concerned about the children’s use of time because so many choices are available in the OC.
