This article surveys magical and mantic uses of the Bible as attested in British folklore reports, with an eye to developing a model of the Biblicist tradition as that tradition was received by the British laity. The evidence shows that (1) in contrast to the church’s emphasis on the Bible’s meaning, the laity exploited the Bible’s textual and artifactual properties as supernatural means to practical ends; (2) charmers made use of particular biblical (or taken-for-biblical) texts, whereas the Bible generally was used in exorcisms, which seem to have remained the purview of clergy; (3) lay trad

Most often Baptists and Presbyterians, they struggled to reestablish their denominations as true and pure churches: true to the historic doctrines of the faith as they perceived them, and pure from what they saw as the polluting influences of an incr

Abstract In this article, various reception-historical analyses of Henry James’s short story “The Jolly Corner” and its use of the Bible are subjected to critique. The parable of the Prodigal Son is offered as a convincing and significant intertext which is clearly signalled in the story. Reading this parable in the narrative yields useful insights into the dynamics between the characters, and suggests a psychological rather than supernatural interpretation of events.

Sight & Sound Theatres, a Christian theatre company known for their musical adaptations of stories from the Bible, takes up the mission of evangelizing through musical theatre. While the genre of musical theatre can transform harsh religious messaging into an accessible and entertaining form, it can also undermine religious messaging by introducing camp and trivializing supernatural deities. This article examines how Sight & Sound Theatres’s Noah keeps with and breaks musical theatre conventions effectively to evangelize to their audiences.

“The Judge's House,” one of Dracula author Bram Stoker's best-known works of short fiction, is a horror tale in which Malcolm Malcolmson, a young college student, rents a haunted house to study for his mathematical tripos exams. He finds himself unable to combat the spirit of a dead, malevolent judge, embodied in the form of a rat. Stoker uses this story as a way of dramatizing the inefficacy of pure reason—symbolized in Malcolmson's mathematical studies—as a foundation for epistemology. The doctrine of biblical inspiration is the view that the Holy Spirit inspired the writing of the sacred texts so that the resultant Scripture is the word of God. To say that Scripture is “God-breathed” does not mean that the scrolls fell down from the sky. Inspiration, in this sense, is the supernatural force that moved the sacred writers to transmit what God has revealed using, human language. This thesis asks one fundamental question that is either implicit or explicit in each part. The underlying question is whether religious belief rests on a belief in a supernatural existence for its sense. In Part One I discuss the philosophical landscape that we have inherited from Hume, and how H.O. Mounce’s attempt to re-interpret Hume’s criticisms of religion, in the light of Hume’s own naturalist tendencies, still cannot reach any supernatural existence. In Part Two, I focu

Throughout the last century there has been much discussion over what it is that makes an activity or a theory 'scientific'. Abstract In the portion of the Hebrew Bible describing the pre-exilic period the text presents three distinct social models. To each model there corresponds a precise typology of relations between power and techniques of the supernatural. These models are not perfectly consistent, either internally or in their application in various passages of the biblical text. These inconsistencies can be at tributed to discrepancies among the sources and to the re-editing that occurred throughout the centuries of the formation of the texts. To complicate matters further, various redactional hands emphasized one or another point from time to time.

Abstract:
Eschatological dramas use the biblical Book of Revelation as their premise; however, despite the direct connection with the New Testament, the shows’ creatives disavow the religious nature of their narratives, reframing Christian elements as mythology. Supernatural (the WB/CW, 2005–2020), Dominion (Syfy, 2014–2015), and Constantine (NBC, 2014–2015) all use the Bible as the basis for what they assert is supernatural mythology. Such a strong disavowal of religion is especially necessary for creatives working on these three shows: they had a particularly strong fear of being associated with religious culture and audiences because their narratives are so closely tied to the Bible. The pushback against religion aligns with the assumption that the upscale fan audience these shows target is nonreligious.
