Abstract:
This study aimed to develop a superovulation protocol for the spiny mouse (Acomys cahirinus). The spiny mouse is a desert-adapted rodent species, with a long oestrus cycle (11 days) compared with rat and mouse, and gives birth to few (mean litter size is 3) precocial offspring after a relatively long gestation (39 days). We successfully optimised a superovulation protocol that elicited a 5-fold increase in the normal ovulation rate of this species. To induce superovulation in the spiny mouse 2 injections of equine chorionic gonadotrophin (eCG, 10 IU each), 9 h apart, were required, followed by

Sheep and goats are short-day breeders. Melatonin, photoperiod, breed, nutrition, and geographical location influence seasonality. Estrus synchronization is useful in maximizing the profitability of small ruminant production. This article discusses the endocrine control of seasonality and the reproductive cycle, and manipulation of ovarian function in sheep and goats. The ovarian follicular wave pattern in these species is described to help the reader understand the mechanisms involved in the protocols for estrus synchronization and superovulation in small ruminants. Few studies have examined superovulation of North American Bison. In cattle, ovarian superstimulation is usually achieved with 6 to 8 injections of FSH at half-day intervals. However, handling bison repeatedly stresses the animals, which could adversely affect their reproductive potential, as well as pose a risk of injury to the bison and handlers. To limit the number of times the bison were handled, we tested a two-injection superovulation scheme using sodium hyaluronate (MAP-5, Bioniche Animal Health Inc., Belleville, Ontario, Canada) in the FSH diluent, which serves to slow the absorption o

Background: The increasing demand for high-quality livestock products necessitates the optimization of reproductive technologies, particularly superovulation and embryo transfer, to enhance genetic improvement and productivity. Superovulation increases embryo availability and accelerates genetic enhancement. The success of these techniques depends on factors such as hormone protocols, donor-recipient selection, and environmental conditions. Aim: This study aimed to compared two superovulation protocols—conventional intramuscular injection (P1) and combined epidural-intramuscular injection (P2)

There is continuing need to simplify bovine superovulation protocols without compromising embryo production. The control of follicular wave emergence and ovulation has facilitated donor management, but the most commonly used treatment, oestradiol, cannot be used in many parts of the world and mechanical removal of the dominant follicle is difficult to apply in the field. Other alternatives include gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH) or LH, but efficacy in groups of randomly cycling animals is variable. Another alternative is to increase the response to GnRH by inducing a persistent follicle

Summary Individual differences and a rather long-lasting reproductive cycle, as well as the relatively small number of oocytes that mature during one reproductive cycle makes it difficult to establish a cryopreserved stock of preimplantation embryos of the guineapig ( Cavia porcellus) when compared with other laboratory rodents. Only a few data for superovulation protocols that can be used for routine laboratory use in guineapigs are available. However, a huge number of different strains exist for many purposes and the establishment of a frozen repository makes sense. Here, we describe the suc
