The activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) was determined in three kiwifruit (Actinidia) species including A. deliciosa, A. chinensis, and A. arguta. Among the species tested, the highest SOD activity was found in crude extracts prepared from fruit tissues of A. deliciosa. The highest enzyme activity was localized in seed, followed by locules, core and outer pericarp (OP). Iron/Manganese superoxide dismutases (Fe/Mn-SODs) are metalloenzymes with highly conserved protein folds, active sites, and dimer interfaces. They protect cells against oxidative stress by catalyzing the conversion of the cytotoxic free radical superoxide to molecular oxygen and hydrogen peroxide. The majority are highly specific for the type of metal (iron or manganese) present within the active site. Au cours de son developpement dans l'hematie, plasmodium falciparum est soumis a un choc oxydant qui peut etre lethal pour le parasite. Celui-ci doit donc mettre en place un systeme de defense dirige contre les especes activees de l'oxygene. En effet, une sod qui constitue la premiere enzyme impliquee dans le systeme enzymatique antioxydant a ete caracterisee chez ce parasite (becuwe et coll. , 1996). La nature fer dependante probable de cette enzyme qui se distingue de celles de l'hote (cu/zn et mn dependantes) laisse supposer qu'elle puisse etre un bon candidat pour un ciblage medicamenteux.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a late onset neuro-degenerative disorder characterized by highly selective death of large motor neurons in the cerebral cortex and spinal cord. A proportion of the familial cases (FALS) with autosomal dominant transmission was linked to chromosome 21q and the defective gene was shown to be the Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase gene (SOD1). SOD1 is a ubiquitously expressed cytoplasmic metalloenzyme catalyzing the dismutation of the superoxide free radical into hydrogen peroxide and molecular oxygen.
