Abstract:
Waste-fired boilers suffer severely from corrosion of critical components such as superheater tubes. In this work the high temperature corrosion of candidate superheater alloys have been investigated by detailed laboratory studies and controlled field exposures in full-scale boilers. In a laboratory study the detrimental effect of gaseous hydrochloric acid (HCl) on three  different ground surface and preoxidised austenitic stainless steels was investigated. Exposures were conducted in an environment comprising N2-10O2-5H2O-0.05HCl at both 400 °C and 700 °C. A positive effect of preoxidation is evident when the alloys are exposed at 400 °C. Oxide layers formed during preoxidation effectively suppress chlorine ingress and lower the corrosion rate for all three materials while accelerated corrosion and chlorine accumulation at the metal/oxide interface is detected for ground surface specimens. The positive effect of preoxidation is lost at 700 °C and corrosion resistance is dependent on alloying level. At 700 °C metal chloride evaporation contributes significantly to the material degradation. Based on the results, high temperature corrosion in the presence of gaseous HCl is discussed in general terms.  In two different waste-fired boilers measures for counteracting superheater corrosion were investigated. In a grate-boiler the deposit formation and high temperature corrosion of some candidate superheater materials were studied. Metal loss measurements showed unacceptably high corrosion rates for the lower alloyed ferritic steels 13CrMo44 (Fe-1Cr-0.5Mo) and HCM12A (Fe-11Cr-2W), as well as for the austenitic Super 304 (Fe-18Cr-9Ni-3Cu). The corrosion attack for these alloys was manifested by the formation of mixed metal chloride/metal oxide scales. A different type of behaviour was seen for the higher alloyed austenitic steels and nickel-base alloys, which were able to form a chromium-enriched oxide next to the metal. However, the alloys suffered from localised pitting attack. Since analyses of the deposit revealed appreciable amounts of low melting salt mixtures such as ZnCl2-KCl, PbCl2-KCl, FeCl2-KCl and NaCl-NiCl2, oxide dissolution in these molten salts is the probable reason for pitting attack. In a waste-fired boiler ammonium sulphate solution was added to the flue gas and the effect on flue gas and deposit composition was evaluated. It was evident that the sulphur-rich additive reduced the amount of alkali chlorides in both the flue gas and the deposit. Results also indicated that the initial corrosion rates were lowered with the use of ammonium sulphate. It was concluded that using the additive could be a possible strategy for changing the flue gas chemistry so that superheater corrosion is mitigated.

Abstract:
The transition metal carbonyls [Re2(CO)10], [Mn2(CO)10] and [Ru(CO)3(PPh3)2], and elemental iodine have been reacted with Xe(OSeF5)2. The products have been fully characterised by a combination of mass spectrometry, infrared spectroscopy 19F, 13C and 31P{1H} (where appropriate) NMR spectroscopies. Further characterisation of the novel compounds Xe(OSeF5)2, [Re(CO)5(OSeF5)] and [Mn(CO)5(OSeF5)] by EXAFS spectroscopy is reported. An extensive review of the halogen oxide fluorides has been carried out and attempts were made to synthesise a range of fluorides and oxide fluorides of bromine. The bromine fluorides [BrF2][AsF6], [BrF4][Sb2F11], K[BrF4] and Cs[BrF6] were successfully characterised using EXAFS spectroscopy. The compound Cs[BrOF4] has been synthesised and the application of EXAFS spectroscopy has yielded internal bond parameters. The area of fluorosulphate chemistry has been reviewed and reactions have been carried out between the superacid HSO3F and a range of transition metal carbonyl complexes and Ti, Hf and Zr derivatives. The complexes produced were characterised using mass spectrometry, infrared spectroscopy and 1H, 13C, 13C{1H} and 19F NMR spectroscopies. The protonation of the carbonyl clusters [Ir4(CO)12], [Os3(CO)12] and [Ru3(CO)12] by HSO3F was investigated. The systems are found to be the same as those previously observed for the superacid AHF.

Abstract:
Super-resolution mapping is becoming an increasing important technique in remote sensing for land cover mapping at a sub-pixel scale from coarse spatial resolution imagery. The potential of this technique could increase the value of the low cost coarse spatial resolution imagery. Among many types of land cover patches that can be represented by the super-resolution mapping, the prediction of patches smaller than an image pixel is one of the most difficult. This is because of the lack of information on the existence and spatial extend of the small land cover patches. Another difficult problem is to represent the location of small patches accurately. This thesis focuses on the potential of super-resolution mapping for accurate land cover mapping, with particular emphasis on the mapping of small patches. Popular super-resolution mapping techniques such as pixel swapping and the Hopfield neural network are used as well as a new method proposed. Using a Hopfield neural network (HNN) for super-resolution mapping, the best parameters and configuration to represent land cover patches of different sizes, shapes and mosaics are investigated. In addition, it also shown how a fusion of time series coarse spatial resolution imagery, such as daily MODIS 250 m images, can aid the determination of small land cover patch locations, thus reducing the spatial variability of the representation of such patches. Results of the improved HNN using a time series images are evaluated in a series of assessments, and demonstrated to be superior in terms of mapping accuracy than that of the standard techniques. A novel super-resolution mapping technique based on halftoning concept is presented as an alternative solution for the super-resolution mapping. This new technique is able to represent more land cover patches than the standard techniques.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Super-resolution imaging is the process whereby several low-resolution photographs of an object are combined to form a single high-resolution estimation. We investigate each component of this process: image acquisition, registration and reconstruction. A new feature detector, based on the discrete pulse transform, is developed. We show how to implement and store the transform efficiently, and how to match the features using a statistical comparison that improves upon correlation under mild geometric transformation. To simplify reconstruction, the imaging model is linearised, whereafter a polygon-based interpolation operator is introduced to model the underlying camera sensor. Finally, a large, sparse, over-determined system of linear equations is solved, using regularisation. The software developed to perform these computations is made available under an open source license, and may be used to verify the results.

Met die oog op 'n vereenvoudigde samestellingsberekening word die beeldvormingsmodel gelineariseer. In die nuwe model word die kamerasensor gemodelleer met behulp van veelhoek-interpolasie. Uiteindelik word 'n groot, yl, oorbepaalde stelsel lineêre vergelykings opgelos met behulp van regularisering. Die sagteware wat vir hierdie berekeninge ontwikkel is, is beskikbaar onderhewig aan 'n oopbron-lisensie en kan gebruik word om die gegewe resultate te veri eer.

Localization accuracy is a fundamental quantity of an imaging system, since it often determines the performance (e.g. effective resolution, sensitivity) of the system. This thesis studies the influence on localization accuracy of finite sampling rate, number of samples, and noise in the data acquisition process. Two classes of super-localization problems will be investigated. The first class of problem aims to improve the accuracy in localizing and tracking the physical position of an object of interest. For lateral localization problems, the key parameters to consider are the pixel size as compared to the size of the point spread function (PSF) of the imaging system, and to the amount of motion of the object of interest. If the pixel size is larger than PSF or object motion, accurate localization essentially becomes solving an under-sampling problem. In this thesis, a compressive holography algorithm is proposed to localize smaller than pixel size motion. 1/45 sub-pixel motion has been successfully detected. For axial localization problems, the localization accuracy will be affected not only by the pixel size and number of pixels, but also by the imaging geometry. Traditional axial localization methods are fundamentally limited by the finite numerical aperture of the optical system. In this thesis, a class of compressive reconstruction method that exploits the "sparse" prior knowledge about the object in order to alleviate the missing angular information has been investigated and 1/16 depth of field (DOF) axial displacement was successfully extracted. Successful implementation of the compressive holography based super-localization technique has been applied to image biomimetic sensors inspired by harbor sea seal whiskers for studying vortex-induced vibrations and wake-induced vibrations. The second class of super-localization problem under investigation is to detect weak signals buried under strong background and noise. A compressive reconstruction method that is able to detect signals captured with extremely low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and signal-to-background ratio (SBR), by exploiting different "sparsities" in the respective signal and background subspaces has been demonstrated.

El presente proyecto se creó frente a una realidad en el país en la que miles de insumos y productos nativos del Perú no son consumidos o siquiera conocidos, debido a que no existen empresas que desarrollen productos de valor agregado con ellos. La gran mayoría de productores en las regiones del Perú comercializan sus insumos en mercados de commodities, donde es importante la venta al volumen, y donde ellos no pueden influir en el precio de venta. A partir de esta realidad, encontramos un insumo que, consideramos, está siendo altamente desaprovechado tanto como la sociedad peruana, como otros países alrededor del mundo. Por ello, dese Rodríguez de Mendoza en Amazonas, traemos el sacha inchi, una semilla con una gran cantidad de nutrientes entre los que destacan el Omega 3, 6 y 9 que ayudan a llevar una vida saludable combatiendo el estrés y el cansancio. El objetivo del proyecto fue buscar una manera de hacer práctico el consumo de este alimento; por ello, nos comprometimos a esa idea y la hicimos nuestra misión. Con este fin, desarrollamos una barra energética con sacha inchi y la integramos con otros insumos peruanos de gran valor nutricional como la kiwicha, la avena, los arándanos y los aguaymantos. Así, buscamos llevar esta barra a las manos de todos los peruanos y que se conozca el valor del sacha inchi para la cultura y gastronomía peruana.
This project was developed in sight of a reality in the country, in which thousands of Peruvian’s agricultural products are not consumed or even known, because of the lack of companies that develop added value products with these supplies. The big majority of producers in the regions of Peru commercialize their goods in commodity markets, where the whole sale is important and where they have no influence over the price. Using this as a head start, we found an agricultural product that, we consider, is being highly undervalued in Peruvian society and all around the world. That is why, from the province of Rodríguez de Mendoza in Amazonas, we brought sacha inchi, a seed that contains high valued nutrients including Omega 3, 6 and 9 that can help people carry a natural health life battling with stress and fatigue. The main objective of this Project was to find a way in which we can make practical the consumption of this good; that is why we committed to this idea and made it our mission. In that line, we developed an energy bar containing sacha inchi and we integrated other high value agricultural Peruvian supplies like kiwicha, oats, blueberries and aguaymantos. With this, we intend to take this bar to the hands of all Peruvians and make the nutritional value of sacha inchi stand out among our gastronomical culture.

Abstract:
This essay aims to analyze if the graphic novel Watchmen criticizes the conventions of the superhero comic genre in regards to gender. The literary theory applied is gender studies. The essay examines the visual portrayal of male and female characters, as well as the male-dominated narrative. The novel does, to some extent, satirize the genre conventions. This can be seen in the hyperbolic visual portrayals of the characters, as well as the comments made on them. However, as there is a lack of self-aware criticism, the novel could not be considered as a satire of the visual representation of genders within the genre, but rather a reinforcement of them. Furthermore, the male-dominated narrative is present in Watchmen, and Laurie could be seen as satirizing this genre convention, as she is a hyperbolic interpretation of the girlfriend archetype. However, there is little change or self-aware critique against the genre norms here as well, thus it cannot be considered satire. Laurie does, however, show criticism of the violence against women within the genre by making a number of comments on the attempted rape of her mother. Abstract:
This study is concerned with volcanostratigraphic and petrologic evolution of the Sü
phan, which is a 4050 m high Quaternary stratovolcano in eastern Anatolia. The eruptive products of Sü
phan Stratovolcano, including transitional mildly alkaline to calc-alkaline rocks, are lavas, domes and pyroclastics ranging in composition from basalts to rhyolites. Ar-Ar age data from different levels of the volcanostratigrafic succession yield a range of 0.76-0.06 Ma. Textural features, wide temperature ranges obtained for intermediate members, and the linear trends of whole-rock geochemistry are strongly suggestive of magma mixing in the evolution of Sü
phan volcanics. Presence of crystal clots in many lavas suggests that cogenetic plutonic rocks were also involved in the mixing process. Comparison of whole-rock, melt inclusion and glass chemistry data of Sü
phan to data from experimental studies reported in literature indicate that the melt inclusions describe true liquid lines of descent from a common hydrous parent at pressures of ~500 MPa. EC-AFC modeling of trace element and isotopic compositions reveals 2-8% crustal contamination in the differentiated lavas. REE modeling indicates that primitive rocks of Sü
phan volcanics were products of mixing of melts from spinel and garnet lherzolite sources, with contributions of 60% and 40%, respectively, in the mixture. A two-stage petrogenetic model is proposed for Suphan stratovolcano. Mantle- derived melts stall and undergo chemical differentiation in a deep hot zone in lower to mid-crust
variably evolved melts ascending from this zone are arrested and mixed at a shallow level where they construct a sub-volcanic magma reservoir beneath Suphan.
