Abstract:

Due to the ongoing globalisation and fast changes within the business environment companies are forced to adapt more quickly to customer needs. Therefore, they depend on reliable suppliers which provide them with the necessary goods and services. As a consequence, finding suitable suppliers is of utmost importance for companies. To be able to choose those suppliers companies need to establish criteria on which basis potential suppliers can be evaluate and select afterwards.

Against this background, this master thesis researches the supplier selection process from the end manufacturer’s point of view. Hereby, the focus is laid on theoretical supplier evaluation criteria and methods. Due to the lack of investigations in this branch of industry the authors have chosen the sporting goods manufacturing industry within Sweden and Austria as their field of study. They have been supported in their research by the companies the Arctic City Counting House AB, the ATOMIC Austria GmbH, and the HEAD Sports AG which provided them with the essential empirical data.

Keeping the above mentioned fact in the back of one’s mind, the authors deduce the following research question:

On which basis and how do manufacturers of sports equipment in Sweden and Austria evaluate and select their suppliers?

Within the theoretical part the reader of this thesis first of all gets an overview of supplier-buyer relationships and afterwards is informed about the structure of the supplier selection process, starting with the preparation step, followed by prequalification and evaluation steps and resulting in the final selection and the continuous controlling of the suppliers. In addition, common criteria which are necessary to evaluate suppliers are presented. Furthermore, the reader is provided with an insight into general evaluation models whereby four common theoretical methods are explained in detail (AHP, TCO, DCA, and DEA). Out of this theoretical data a conceptual model was created.

The empirical part consists of practical information which was provided by the three researched companies mentioned above through questionnaires and interviews. The analysed data concludes that the evaluation criteria which are given in theory are also used in practice. In addition, it was discovered that a further criteria category is applied within the researched companies. The values of the evaluation criteria depend on the goals of the respective company. The theoretical evaluation models on the other hand are not used by the examined sporting goods manufacturers. All of them use their own methods which are presented in the empirical as well as in the analytical part of this thesis. Finally, this thesis ends with a conclusion and with the answer of the research question.

Based on this thesis sporting goods manufacturers get an insight in specific supplier evaluation methods and thus gain the chance to learn how other companies within this industry evaluate and select their suppliers.

Chen, Jian. "Internet based intelligent supplier selection and evaluation system." Thesis, University of Derby, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10545/208798.

Full text
Abstract:
Supplier selection and. evaluation is an important research area which can adopt technologies of information retrieval, artificial intelligence, etc. The current supplier selection processes from the Internet still requires heavy manual activities. To overcome these shortcomings, a new internet based intelligent supplier selection system for supply chain management is going to be investigated in the research project. The project is going to develop such a kind of system for the PC manufacturer. The project firstly is going to develop an automatic web information searching system, and secondly, develop the table identification model to convert the different format tables obtained from the Internet into the standard table format. Then, it is going to investigate an intelligent system to analyze the obtained information from the web page automatically and put the useful information for further processing. And finally, this project will investigate an artificial intelligent method to evaluate the possible suppliers according to the information obtained from the internet search. The experimental works for the table identification model and a modified artificial intelligent model has been demonstrated that both models are powerful methodologies for web based supplier selection and evaluation. ---

Abstract:
This thesis attempts to integrate the three supplier processes- supplier segmentation, supplier selection/evaluation and order allocation- based on a case study of a white goods manufacturer. These processes are dealt with in a hierarchical manner, where the decisions at an earlier stage (supplier segmentation) may affect on the results of later stages (supplier selection/evaluation and order allocation). Based on a wide set of variables gathered from the supplier segmentation literature and from the framework developed by the case company, a factor analysis is performed. The resulting eight factors (complexity and criticality, supply market dynamism, supplier&rsquo
s economic dependence, buyer&rsquo
s supplier dependence, uncertainty, supplier capabilities, supplier&rsquo
s specialization to white goods manufacturer and possibility of harm to user) are used for clustering analysis with the K-means method. Three different clustering schemes (4-clusters, 8-clusters, and 18-clusters) are analyzed to see the effect of number of clusters on the cluster means. A supplier selection model is constructed by the PROMETHEE method as was done in a former study at the same company. Two different scenarios are considered in the supplier selection phase: First, data from the former study are kept as they are. The second scenario considers a change of criteria weights. As a result, the qualified suppliers were found to be the same in both scenarios, but the rankings and net flows, which were inputs to the order allocation model, changed. The effects of these changes were discussed at a conceptual level, due to a lack of case data for the order allocation model.

Abstract:
Rapidly changing business environment, increasing and fluctuating customer demand, the recent development and employment of technology are crucial reasons for companies to strive for better quality, shorter lead time and lower costs. The supplier evaluation and selection process is an increasingly important activity in the supply chain in order to enhance the company’s competitiveness by reducing the costs and simultaneously maintaining the same quality of products. The focus of this thesis is on the supplier evaluation and selection process for public procurement in Swedish electricity industry. Specifically, the work combines the literature and the empirical findings gathered from the case company Växjö Energy (VEAB) to develop a supplier evaluation and selection process for the public procurement in Swedish electricity industry. It was concluded that the supplier evaluation and selection process for public procurement has basically four steps. The steps are 1. Identifying the needs and the sourcing method; 2. Setting the pre-requirements; 3. Supplier evaluation and 4. Supplier selection. In addition, the developed supplier evaluation tool innovatively combines the advantages of the value-added model with the advantages of AHP model. Moreover, this developed supplier evaluation and selection process would help the public procurement departments in Swedish electricity industry to improve their current practices in selecting the suppliers by highlighting the important steps and developing the evaluation model in a way that enhance its credibility to provide a more precise and reliable results.

Abstract:
Conventionally, the focus during supplier evaluation has been to assess cost, quality and delivery effectiveness due to their impact on profitability. In recent years, there has been increased emphasis on promoting more sustainable business practices that focus on reducing environmental impact and improve societal well-being, in addition to economic benefits. However, most of the existing supplier evaluation methods in literature as well as those used by leading companies fall short of comprehensively assessing suppliers from a Triple Bottom Line (TBL) perspective. TBL defined as holistically looking at the economic, environmental, and societal aspects of an entity. This paper presents a review and selection of metrics for economic, environmental and societal sustainability evaluation. In addition, this work proposes a methodology for combining the scores into a comprehensive score that can be used to compare two entities performance relative to the TBL.

Abstract:
In today’s competitive market, survival and response to customer needs and expectations are enabled through high-quality products for low costs – quality products provided by suppliers fulfilling today’s quality-requirements for a low price. Companies have until recent years selected suppliers only according to a pricing structure, leaving other criteria’s, such as quality, behind. The purpose of this master thesis is therefore to investigate quality aspects that must be considered from a supplier evaluation perspective and design a simple evaluation tool for first-time supplier selections. Both new and existing suppliers will be tested with the tool according to information given during a case study made at Flexit AS, a Norwegian ventilation-systems company looking to introduce a structured approach for selecting suppliers. Through an extensive literature- and empirical study, where a survey, of which evaluation criteria’s to be included in the evaluation tool, was conducted together with several both semi-structured and unstructured interviews, a foundation for the design of the tool was presented. Quality management systems and quality performance measurements, such as rejection rate and delivery precision, are considered as fundamental aspects to consider when assessing a supplier. Acceptance levels of approval are set according to in-house objectives. If any evaluation tool including quality should be usable, an in-house quality system must therefore first be implemented by the in-house company – a notable improvement recommended to the case company. The design of the tool given from the thesis provides the evaluator with an opportunity to visualize and compare existing suppliers according to five criteria’s including cost, together with an additional spreadsheet for evaluation of new suppliers put forward as a foundation and an indicator if new suppliers are considering quality on a basic level.

Abstract:
Title: Conscious purchasing - Securing the purchasing process in the apparel industry Authors: Jakob Bank, Emma Sjödoff and Helena Zebergs Tutor: Roger Stokkedal Examiner: Helena Forslund Background: There has been several scandals within the apparel industry and due to this brand owners of apparel companies has started to offer their customers’ alternative products, which has been manufactured in a more conscious and sustainable way. The purchasing process has thereby become more complex including multiple criteria such as social and environmental considerations which have to be fulfilled by their suppliers. Purpose: To describe how Swedish brand owners of apparel companies select their supplier for their conscious collections, which sustainability policies they include in contracts with their selected suppliers and how they evaluate these suppliers in regard to the brand owners’ policy on sustainability. Method: This thesis was conducted using qualitative semi-structured interviews and a deductive approach. Several sampling methods was used which led to the involved companies who were interviewed through both structured as well as semi-structured interviews. Conclusion: Swedish brand owners of apparel companies select their suppliers based on how well they fulfil their demands, and if there is a possibility to establish a long term relationship. They include different sustainability policies in their contracts, but all suppliers need to approve the brand owners CoC as well as use organic cotton. The evaluation visits are conducted, but the evaluation responsible, how often it takes place and the duration of the visit depends on the brand owner.

Abstract:
Collectively, US public transportation systems operated 137,047 vehicles per peak period in 2008 (American Public Transportation Association 2010). Buses accounted for the largest segment among these vehicles, and the passenger van segment was second. Together, they accounted for 78% of the vehicles operated per peak period (American Public Transportation Association 2010). Due to their pervasive use in the public transportation industry, buses and vans have been the focus in various academic research studies. However, very few studies have focused on vehicle procurement. Further, none have focused on the specific vehicle procurement function of supplier evaluation and selection. The over-arching objective of this research is to gain a deeper understanding of the relative importance of vehicle supplier attributes in reference to the Federal Transit Administration's (FTA) “best-value” procurement initiative and the influence of these attributes on the evaluation and selction of bus and van suppliers. This research studies vehicle procurement decision-makers at public transportation agencies to determine which supplier attributes they perceive to be the most important when evaluating vehicle suppliers. Results indicate that the top five supplier attributes were quality, reliability, after-sales support, warranties and claims, and integrity. The order of these top five attributes changed according to the type of supplier being evaluated, i.e., conventional fuel vehicle supplier versus alternative fuel vehicle supplier. The reason for this change was explained as being due to the increased engineering and technological expertise required of alternative fuel vehicle suppliers. Utilizing Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA), the research showed that the variation in the perception of the importance of particular supplier attributes was not generally influenced by an agency's urban classification, its vehicle fleet size, its capital expenditure level, its decision-makers' education level, or their years of experience. However, FTA region was determined to have an influence on two attributes. Utilizing a conditional logit discrete choice model, the research also found that in practice price and not quality had the highest parameter estimate and was therefore deemed most important. It was followed by quality, after-sales support, technical capability, and delivery. Further, to garner a deeper understanding of attributes' relative importance, participants in the research identified 41 attribute components and provided metrics by which to measure these components and, by extension, the attributes. This research contributes in four areas. These are government procurement initiatives, agency “best-value” procurement practice, vehicle supplier marketing, and academic research in supplier evaluation and selection in the public transportation industry.

Abstract:
ABB is a global company with a leading position in power and automation technologies. Being active on a global market creates a high pressure to always develop the business and reduce costs in order to stay competitive. The purchasing function at ABB ́s unit Control Products is divided into a strategic- and an operative purchase department. The negotiated setups the strategic purchasers establish with the suppliers have been shown to affect the transport- and inventory costs that are charged to the operative purchase department. In order to determine whether more beneficial setups could be negotiated by including transport- and inventory costs when they are evaluated, this case study has been requested. Two master students from Linköping University have conducted the study and by investigating different setups, conclusions to answer the study ́s purpose could be drawn. The purpose is presented below. The study’s purpose is to recommend future guidelines for the strategic purchasers at ABB’s unit Control Products that can be applied when negotiating with suppliers, by evaluating purchase-, transport- and inventory costs. In order to investigate how the purchase-, transport- and inventory costs were affected by different setups, four different cases were defined. Each case included a specific article, which was chosen based on its properties and its current and alternative setups. The conducted literature reviews and interviews with employees at Control Products resulted in the two sub- criteria lead time and net price were defined as the most important ones when negotiating and evaluating suppliers. A combination of these sub-criteria was therefore used to choose suitable articles. Once the cases had been defined, the purchase-, transport- and inventory costs could be calculated for both their current situation and alternative setup scenarios. Theories from relevant researches were used to strengthen and criticised the cases’ results. Each case's result provided information regarding how the purchase-, transport- and inventory costs were affected by specific setups. By comparing the alternative scenarios with the setup currently used, the alternatives ́ profitability could be determined. The cases showed that by only studying one of the three cost posts, only a limited insight was gained. Even if the purchase cost was to increase for an alternative setup, it could still be profitable to implement due to decreased transport- and inventory costs. Furthermore, an alternative setup that showed significant potential to reduce inventory costs was proven to not be profitable because of its effect on the net price. Neglecting to take transport- and inventory costs into account when a potential supplier is evaluated can make a deal look more profitable than it is. The final recommendation is that purchase-, transport- and inventory costs all have to be taken into consideration in order to determine which setups that are economically preferable. If the strategic purchasers at Control Products includes these when they negotiate with suppliers, more profitable deals can be obtained.

The importance of the process of creating value together, made it mandatory understand the inherent complexity of the relationships future-oriented and, as such, the selection and evaluation of suppliers began to be increasingly analyzed. A more detailed study of the types of purchasing orientation also allowed to provide either the client or the supplier a perspective about the most effective type of relationship that can be established, influencing both cooperative attitude with respect to any transaction. Through a case study, it was attempted to analyze how the types of purchasing orientation affect the way of how certain vendor should be selected and evaluated. It was concluded that as the level of demand of the purchase increases, the selection criteria and evaluation are altered because of the complexity of the transaction implies that to happen.

Abstract:
Currently, the industrial environment is characterized by intense globalization, competition between supply chains, maintenance of core competencies and outsourcing of other services. Thus, the management of relationships between independent agents of the supply chain and the procurement process are potential factors for increasing enterprise competitiveness. In the construction context, the proper selection of business partners is a key element for the success of projects, since a large proportion of the activities can be sub-contracted and have precedence relationship between them. Supplies represent a significant percentage of the cost of buildings, 60%, information that demonstrates the potential of profitability that can be achieved by structuring the process of supplier selection in the construction industry. Selection based on price take off from competition the sub-contractors and suppliers more responsible, contributing to the decline in the level of performance and reduction in the overall project efficiency, since inefficiencies are summed through the chain. By structuring the supplier selection process, it is possible to mitigate the supply risk arising from failures of these suppliers during the relationship. The objective of this study was to develop a systematic for selection of critical suppliers, considering several criteria other than price, among qualitative and quantitative. The approach also aims at eliminating the subjectivity of the process and the extraction of the best supplier in an objective way. In order to that, competitive dimensions were set to evaluate vendors and subsequently two quantitative methods, Fuzzy Sets Theory (FST) and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) were used to select the best supplier among the alternatives based on multiple agents evaluation.

Abstract:

The role of purchasing in supply chain management has received and continues to receive increasing attention as the years go by. Purchasing enhances efficiency and competitiveness among other benefits but to realize these benefits it is imperative to select and maintain competent suppliers. However, many factors affect a firm’s ability to choose the right supplier. Uncertainty is an issue that has received great attention. It affects all functions of a company consequently affecting purchasing and supplier selection. This thesis seeks to provide an understanding of the supplier selection process and criteria under circumstances of uncertainty in the case where the potential supplier under evaluation is a newly created company. The authors try to find out if uncertainty varies with firm’s age and tested the suitability of existing criteria on the selection of newly created firms. They also sought ways by which uncertainty can be reduced. One of the realisations of this thesis is that there is a relationship between the characteristics or problems faced by new firms and uncertainty. Uncertainties created by new firms include lack of trust and commitment, inadequate finance, poor quality, unreliable delivery times, inadequate logistic technological capabilities. No new types or sources of uncertainty were discovered however, it was found that uncertainty was certainly higher when working with new firms. The criteria delivery, quality, cost/price, financial position and communication and technology were recognized as the commonly used criteria a fact confirmed from empirical results as well as in previous literature. However other criteria such as ISO certification, reliability, credibility, good references and product development were also identified. These criteria had existed before but did not receive the same attention in previous studies. This show that focus is shifting from solely relying on quantitative factors to include qualitative criteria. The study identified that some methods of minimising uncertainty could include detailed financial analyses, site visit, intensive verification, close relationships, ISO certification, good references and recommendations. It is worth noting that uncertainty cannot be entirely eliminated in all situations

Abstract:

This dissertation describes a methodology, tools, and implementation techniques of automating supplier selection procedures of a small and medium-sized agile virtual enterprise.

Firstly, a modeling approach is devised that can be used to model the supplier selection procedures of an enterprise. This modeling approach divides the supplier selection procedures broadly into three stages, the pre-selection, selection, and post-selection stages.

Secondly, a methodology is presented for automating the supplier selection procedures. The methodology first divides the selection process into three stages, such as pre-selection, selection, and post-selection stages. Then the methodology identifies the steps within the selection stage that can automated. Automating the steps within the pre-selection and the post-selection stages are not considered here. The methodology also proposes three modules for automating the selection stage. To assist automation, the selection stage is further divided into three sub-stages, namely, bidder selection, partner selection and performance evaluation sub-stages. By this methodology, each sub-stage of the selection stage employs a module for automation; the modules used for automation at these sub-stages are the data collection system, the inference engine and the performance evaluation engine.

Thirdly, modeling, design and implementation of the three modules for automation are described.

Public Acquisitions are a crosscut area to all Public Administration and play a fundamental role on economy. As an integrated part of this reality, Municipalities take hold of procedures of high financial value. Therefore, an intervention in this area is relevant due to the play of the Municipalities in the interaction with the market of suppliers. The making of the present study pretends to develop and optimize the group of suppliers of the Seixal Municipality. In order to do so, we define criteria to select and identify indicators to evaluate performance of the service. On that base, the further decisions can be taken based on fundamental and trusted credentials. That contributes to acquisition processes that are optimized and more flexible. The result of the study was that, where some suppliers met the proposed criteria, others should develop some skills in the proposal items evaluated, though. The levels of performance falling beyond the acceptable suggest that its evaluation should be subject to confirmation. Should the initial evaluation be maintain and it is basic condition for the correction of the items under non-compliance, or other suppliers would be consider as alternative for supplying the same service.

This thesis addresses the challenges of improving the quality of parts received from suppliers at Waters, an analytical instrument manufacturing company. Preliminary analysis identified improvement opportunities at evaluation of supplier's capability, agreement on requirements with suppliers at early supplier selection stage as well as closed loop supplier management. A 4-step sequential process was designed to improve the supplier selection and management process. First, an initial supplier capability assessment process is incorporated in the quotation process and the Analytical Hierarchy Process is used to make an integrated supplier selection decision. Second, a production part approval process ensures that the supplier fully understands the requirements and proves whether or not it can meet the requirements consistently. Third, a formal inspection report acceptance process for the new product is established to utilize the supplier's inspection resource. Fourth, a formal supplier corrective request process for nonconformance is suggested to provide corrective feedback to the supplier in addition to instructions for improvement. The overall new supplier selection and management process is expected to benefit both Waters and the suppliers. The suggested process is expected to have more visibility to the supplier's capability and improve the supplier quality. The non-value added activities such as incoming inspection rejections and the related disposition process are to be reduced and thus cost saving can be achieved.

Abstract:
Supplier selection plays an important role in any organisation. This study investigates and examines supplier selection criteria and the impacts on buying firm performance; specifically focusing on the telecommunications industry in Malaysia. Previous studies in this area have focussed on the criteria such as quality, price, delivery, supplier relationship management and decision making tools and techniques. However, little research has been undertaken to include government policies and business ethics as elements in the supplier selection criteria. After a literature review and interviews, the development of conceptual frameworks and a number of hypotheses were put forward. To achieve an in-depth study, four major telecommunications service provider companies in Malaysia were chosen as a case study. A questionnaire was used as the main instrument in gathering data. The questionnaire is principally concerned with the understanding of supplier selection and its criteria; based upon the variables that are used for the model and hypothesis testing. The study also investigates the relationship between supplier selection and the impact of supplier selection to the company performance. This model was tested using Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) technique with the AMOS software application. Results indicated all of the criteria include quality, price, delivery, supplier relationship management, decision making tools and techniques, government policy and business ethics as valid constructs. A good model fit was also established. The findings of this research conclude that the influencing criteria to supplier selection in the telecommunications industry in Malaysia are supplier delivery performance standards and supplier relationship management even when considering the remainder of the above mentioned elements. The price factors were found to be less important due to this factor possibly leading to unhealthy competition in the market in terms of price wars among the suppliers in order to win the business. Most of the criteria are also interrelated to each other and affect the supplier selection decision. This model has added new perspectives to the study of supplier selection in the supply chain management field. As for future research it is suggested that intangible elements such as political, cultural and social influences are included in the conceptual framework; as this would offer important insight for management bodies in organisation, academia and public policy fields alike.

With the increase of importance and dependence of supplier selection in supply chain management, it many enterprises pay more attention to developing partner relationships with their suppliers. One of the key points for purchase managers selects suitable suppliers. As a result, it’s a significant decision for them to select suppliers and allocate the ordering volumes. In this paper we proposed a model to solve the problems of supplier selection and order allocation in single part and multiple sourcing situations. The model includes expected loss cost and expected purchase cost from a set of suppliers. In case of multiple sourcing, the model takes into consideration the ability of suppliers to increase their output when one or more of the rest suppliers fail to deliver. We concern all-unit discount and incremental discount simultaneously, and it makes problems more complicated and difficult to be solved. Hence, we use the MATLAB method which minimizes total cost analysis to obtain the optimal supplier order allocation.

Supplier selection plays a crucial role in supply chain management (SCM). If a firm can choose a vendor that complies with the industry standards and satisfy the supply chain’s demand, it can add the competitive strength to the supply chain. During the last decade, the Information Technology (IT) substantially affects our life. By rising of Computer, Communication and Consumer Electronics, PCB industry plays a crucial role in the world. With the current competitive Printed Circuit Board (PCB) market and executive European Union (EU) Directive concerning Waste Electronics and Electrical Equipment (WEEE) and Restriction of the use of certain hazardous substance in electrical and electronic equipment (RoHS), the Taiwan’s PCB companies are adjusting their manufacture process and criteria of supplier selection by operating in coordination their European Union market activities to cut down their manufacturing costs. This study will use the way of literature review and AHP methodology to establish an evaluation framework and to find the importance of criteria in PCB companies of Taiwan. The research result shows that cost is the most important factor for supplier selection which is not surprising as purchasers strive to minimize total cost greater emphasis on quality. In addition, the third level of AHP analysis shows that reliability of product is also important for purchasers. This study provides a reference to PCB companies about importance of criteria of supplier selection items in PCB industry of Taiwan. We hope it could help PCB companies to make a right choice in the dynamic environment.

Supply chain management(SCM)is one of the most important competitive strategies for today’s enterprises. The major purposes of supply chain management lie in integrating a number of various suppliers in order to satisfy market demand. Meanwhile, supplier selection plays an important role in establishing supply chain. Traditional supplier selection method focuses on the requirements of individual enterprises, lacking in supply chain consideration. This study proposed a supply selection methodology based on supply chain integrated architecture. In this article, we design a supplier selection procedure for supply chain. First, the criteria for supplier selection are proposed based on enterprise’s competitive strategy. Potential supplier’s screening, criteria’s weighting and supplier’s ranking are defined in the following step. This study uses data envelop analysis (DEA)to select efficient suppliers in the first stage, and use TOPSIS, a multi-attribute decision making(MADA)method, to rank the potential suppliers. Finally, textile industry is given to illustrate the model. Because data envelope analysis has powerful function in supplier evaluation, inefficient suppliers are deleted exactly and quickly. Both supplier efficiency and potential risk are concerned by TOPSIS at the same time. Therefore the methodology proposed in this study is suitable for enterprise to select suitable suppliers and to increase business performance.

Supplier selection is a key issues of the supply chain management to create competitive advantages for many organizations. The supplier performance directly impact the competitiveness of a firm .Therefore, purchasing managers have to evaluate suppliers regularly, and develop partner relationship with them .The aim of this study is to develop an integrated model for better practices on supplier evaluation and selection. In practices, three main attributes of supplier selection:quality, delivery, and service, are often used to evaluate the supplier perform ances by many firms. This study applies the concept of Taguchi loss function to calculate the risk of loss by the three attributes. Then, analytic hierarchy process is used to give the weight of more objective assessment in the situation of considering different weights, combined criteria decision to a single risk losses. Finally,we can sort suppliers according to the Taguchi loss then use the weights of each supplier and take into consideration discounts to establish the final integrated model.

As procurement plays an important role within supply chain network, the efficient procurement process not only improves the product quality but also reduces the delivery time. Therefore, the electronic procurement must be applied for more and more complex collaborative network. However, it is necessary to provide a decision support system for managing collaborative partners (i.e., suppliers and original equipment manufacturers) in the collaborative supply chain network. Rather than focusing on single collaborative partner, the decision support system should evaluate the entire performance of entire collaborative supply chain network by considering all collaborative partners. Since precision machinery industry is well developed in the middle-Taiwan, the related collaborative supply chain performance and management decision support system is developed for E-procurement approach in this research. Expecting the collaborative partner resource constraints (types and numbers of partner), the characteristics of each kind of collaborative partners will also be analyzed. The decision support system developed can be applied to evaluate the influence of original and new collaborative partners to the entire network by concurrently considering collaborative quality, collaborative delivery date and collaborative cost. The key partners who significantly influence the performance of supply chain then can be further determined for necessary assistance. The solution method will also be developed to efficiently planning collaborative partner resource.

ABSTRACT Since the investment environment across Taiwan Strait changes enormously in recent years, such as upstream suppliers move manufacturing bases abroad so as to lower costs of manufacturing and management, the supply chain of downstream assembly manufacturers has been changing remarkably. In order to respond to this phenomenon of change, the evaluation and selection of suppliers has been an important issue in the realm of supply chain management. Most of the current studies regarding evaluation and selection of suppliers focus on the supply chain environment where enterprises collaborate with suppliers; using historical data for supplier evaluation is also a commonly used methodology in academy. However, in domestic industrial computer industry, “Few Mulit-Specifications” production and customization make up most percentages in make-to-order manufacturing. Due to the way of “Few Mulit-Specifications” production, it easily causes raw materials suppliers the consequences of frequent change of manufacturing processes, ineffectiveness of manufacturing batch, drops of yield rates, unstable delivery, increasing costs, etc., and thus affect the interaction between industrial computer manufacturers and their customers. The way that enterprises only base on price or quality to select suppliers will incur enormous increase of exceptional management costs for enterprises. Therefore, the models of running industrial computer business are more difficult to forecast raw materials demands. As a result, manufacturers must incorporate effective evaluation and selection of suppliers to reach the target of effectively integrating upstream and downstream suppliers, and thus building up competitive supply chains. How do we evaluate and select the suppliers, which match the feature of small variety and meet supply chain requirements, to increase the competitiveness of the overall supply chains? This study conducted interviews with elite experts in the industry and survey by questionnaires on supplier evaluation and selection models, hoping to incorporate academic study and practical experience to select suitable suppliers. The prevalence of supply chain management have changed the relationship between the enterprise and the supplier, shifting from hostility to cooperative partner. Therefore, it has become an important issue that how an enterprise evaluate and select appropriate suppliers. The supplier evaluation/selection surveys have become commonplace. However, these literatures almost focus on finding out the determination of the relative importance of each of the selection/evaluation factors. But least further study the possible reasons of supplier selection/evaluation. Besides, because the government long-term devote to higher education , finance and economics policy, and develop high technology industry. The enterprises in Taiwan invest the electronics industry with great exertion. This research try to find out the major selection/evaluation factors of the high technology industry and test the relative research through literature review, questionnaire, factor analysis, analysis of variance, and analysis of correlation. The finding of this research that the high technology industry evaluation/selection factors are not only quality, price, and delivery, but also technical capability and service. As a whole, supplier evaluation/selection has no significant difference in different industry and level. As for the structure of business and operational position, ability and relationship, quality and technical capability, the different industry has significant difference; And as for the structure of business and operational position, the different level has significant difference. New product development is knowledge-creating process (Nonaka and Takeuchi, 2005). Previous researches have confirmed integrating supplier has positive influence to new product development (NPD) performance. As a result, one important issue that arises is how to select and evaluate the right new product development supplier to integrate into the new product development project. This study reviews the relative literatures on the subject of supplier selection, and bases on the analysis result of the questionnaire survey to build up the selection model of the new product development supplier. Then use Satty’s analytic hierarchy process (AHP) method to analyze the relative weight and the important rank of the dimensions and factors. We also simulate the selective situation of the new product development supplier to test the validity and performance of the model. The research finds that the most important dimensions of selecting and evaluating new product development supplier are: the new product development performance of integrating supplier, Buyer-supplier relationships, and Integrating supplier’s knowledge. The relative importance of the traditional supplier selection dimension is lower than the other dimensions. The study’s findings suggest that manufacturer should use the new way to select and evaluate the new product development supplier. The results also shows that the top eleven factors domination new product development supplier are: enhance new product quality, reduce development cost of the new product, buyer and supplier could solve problem mutually, buyer-supplier’s mutual communication, quicker new product development processes, increase innovation of the new product, greater technological improvements, the collaborative relationship between buyer and supplier, mutual trust, mutual promise, and complementary skill between the buyer and supplier. Result also shows that the proposed selection and evaluation model can evaluate very correctly. Manufacturers can use these results to help them better understand the process and criteria for future new product development supplier selection and evaluation.

Taiwan's metal products manufacturing is a highly-integrated industry cluster including foundry, heat treatment plant, machining shop and surface treatment plant. This industry cluster is famous for offering flexible, value-add service with acceptable price, efficient production and competitive solution to support customer success. These advantages make Taiwan’s supply chain becoming a top candidate of partnership to global manufacturers. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are the backbone of Taiwan’s metal products manufacturing and their coopetition plays a critical role in the development of industry. Outstanding SMEs always own a specific supply chain and build a cautious connection with internal processing among external suppliers and customers. How to evaluate an excellent supplier is a key factor not only impacting stable production, products’ quality, but also affecting future orders. A main purpose of this study is to establish evaluation criteria for selecting suppliers in metal products manufacturing. The study is based on evaluation criteria of suppliers proposed by scholars in the past. We absorb the advice of many decision-makers in this industry and categorize the most suitable 7 major sections with 25 key factors as the guidelines for selecting suppliers. And then, utilizing an Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) identifies the key elements of supplier selection and their weights. In order to further analyze the differences among the different evaluation groups of the experts on the supplier selection model, the experts were divided into decision-making experts, third-party experts and engineering technology experts. The decision-making high-level thinks that the excellent technical ability is derived from the cultivation of talents; the third-party business thinks that if the supplier wants to achieve the goal of sustainable development, the management and development ability is an important key factor; while the engineers in the professional field think that the use of knowledge It is the highest priority to control technology to solve quality problems. Through the analysis of the results of the group's selection of suppliers have different perspectives, so in the future selection of suppliers can be designed by the decision-making level to determine the weight setting, engineers and experts to measure the program. Hopefully, through the results of this study, we can provide a reference for the selection of suppliers in the metal products manufacturing industry.

Since the beginning of 1990s, Taiwan has been one of the most important OEM/ODM partners partner. These firms are valuable because of their production speed, flexibility, and cost-cutting ability. But nowadays, when business environment is getting more competitive; demand is uncertain; and technology is rapidly changing, the cost-cutting ability of OEM/ODM becomes more challenging than ever. In such situation, purchasing function, which directly effecting to cost structure, product quality, and competitive ability of enterprise, becomes an essential function. So, the understanding of supplier behaviors and effect of these behaviors on firm operation becomes an indispensable tool for managers for making adequate strategic decisions on supplier evaluation and selection. This research develops a system dynamics (SD) model to (i) investigate the effects of supplier’s behavior on a firm performance and (ii) to process supplier evaluation and selection work. A simulation model is designed based on actual operation of a Taiwan ICT firm, including five internal sub-models: order demand, production control, financial planning, project management, R&D, and an external sub-model: supplier management. In order to confirm the accuracy of simulation model, structural validity tests and behavior validity test are applied. A set of design of experiment (DOE) is designed to investigate the effect of supplier factors on profit outcome. Furthermore, historical data from 18 housing material suppliers are loaded into the proposed SD model to implement the supplier evaluation and selection process. Our study also proves that the combination of the most efficient suppliers produces a higher profit, approximately 8%, comparing to simulation result of 18 suppliers.

Enterprises begin to outsource their non-core enterprise technologies based on the considerations of cost reduction in recent years, and thus the importance of supplier selection rises continuously. Due to the recent soar of environmental protection awareness as well as the pressure from WEEE and RoHS advocated by the EU, the green supplier selection model can locate the most suitable partner more accurately. Enterprises will emphasis sustainability and environmental protection in the product developing, designing and manufacturing process. In other words, they can actively help the suppliers to implement green supply chain management and achieve better environmental goals. The purpose of this research is to develop an overall supplier selection evaluation model to enhance the personnel quality training within the green suppliers through the PDDRO in TTQS and to improve its fundamentals. The suppliers can then use the green suppliers’ service quality capabilities as a final qualification standard to achieve the four targets in the eco-efficiency and balanced score card, and to develop a complete quality circulatory system. The second chapter will discuss the construction theories used in this model through literature review, the third chapter qualification process evaluation, and the fourth case verification. The final fifth chapter will examine the analysis results and conclusions from theory and practice, as well as the effectiveness of the green supplier selection model developed in this research.

Temporary help service firms in Taiwan today have diversified operations. However, since fabs are now using high-tech and high-risk equipment, a very slight error would result in inconsiderable losses. As a result, fabs are only willing to work with suppliers of reputable brand equipment. The working relationship between the equipment supplier and temporary help service firms not only provides a solution to the huge manpower cost and flexible human resource utilization problems of the factories, but also solves the lack of technology and manpower brand assurance problem of temporary help service firms that causes them to lose orders. Competition in the semiconductor industry is becoming more and more competitively, hence technical manpower development time has also become longer than before. In consequence, equipment suppliers are beginning to feel the pressure of the enormous personnel costs such entails. Since they are now beginning to consider the necessity of technical manpower dispatching, the selection of the right temporary help service firms has become a very important issue. In the past, supplier evaluation and selection studies mostly focused on the manufacturing and service industries. Hence, this paper studied the past domestic studies conducted on supplier selection to understand the appropriate selection guidelines that would serve as the fundamental guidelines for the selection of outsourcing manpower companies. The PROMETHEE (Preference Ranking Organization Method for Enrichment Evaluations) proposed by Brans and Vincke in 1985 was used as the supplier selection tool for the study. Finally, we employed a simulated case study where we consolidated the selection guidelines, method and tools to create a reference for future practical applications and academic researches.

TFT-LCD is a capital-intensive and technology-intensive industry with short economic cycle and refined technology. TFT-LCD products are made from many components. Therefore the TFT-LCD suppliers need to acquire quick response, satisfactory production techniques and excellent quality to make this industry grow prosperously and continually. In addition, because the cost of TFT-LCD components are as high as 70% of a final product, a missing component would hinder TFT-LCD panel industry from functioning properly. As a result, choosing a supplier that carries high quality sources, reasonable prices and fine technology all greatly affect the overall TFT-LCD industry. TFT-LCD industry has been growing prosperously in Taiwan in the last couple of years. The high demands generate tremendous growth in TFT-LCD industry in terms of value. The vertical production of TFT-LCD industry also established opportunities for TFT-LCD upstream channels; this consequently provides more choosing opportunities for suppliers as well. How to objectively select a cooperative partner among the upstream channels to reduce risks has become a challenge for procurement strategists. This research merges advice from TFT-LCD procurement managers, references and statistical studies to figure out the main concerns, factors and variables of procurement managers when choosing a suitable TFT-LDC supplier. Analysis in relation to hierarchy and Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) to acquire the weight of each variable was also conducted in this research. The main purpose of this research is to obtain evaluative factors and variables for TFT-LCD industry to find a suitable supplier.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to propose supplier evaluation and selection model using the proposed method based on process yield where the quality is described by nonlinear profile. Methodology – This paper present multiple comparisons with the best (MCB), difference test statistics and the Bonferroni method to evaluate and select the best supplier. Furthermore, this study considers processes which quality is described by nonlinear profiles with two-sided specifications. Simulation study was conducted to find the selection power and the required number of profiles. All programs were written in R language. Findings – This study found that MCB performs better than the Bonferroni method. Additionally, MCB will have the least power when the best supplier is equal to the upper limit of K/2 and the Bonferroni method will have the least power when there is only one best supplier exists. Both the number of levels and the number of profiles will have an impact on the power of the statistical test. The required number of profiles and the critical value are tabulated for the convenience of decision makers. Originality/value – The proposed method can help managers or practitioners to evaluate and select the best suppliers with the identified criteria in an effective way.

As the global economy continuously growing, there are more people are willing to participate in sport activities as well as leisure and entertainment activities. Fishing is known as "golfing in the water" in the western country, which has been developed rapidly in Taiwan. All anglers now are tending to pursue high-quality products, which provide reliability and advanced technology. In order to adapt the dramatic changes in the competitive environment and the industrial structure, fishing tackle manufacturers must use supplier management effectively to reduce risks in purchasing. They should not only consider their competitive advantage of cost, but also improve their technology and performances. The character of suppliers often effects customers’ using experience, which suggest that vendors should choose their suppliers very carefully. Additionally, reviews on suppliers are made according to many internal factors and external factors. The subject of setting up an effective system for choosing suppliers becomes an urgent issue for fishing tackle vendors. The following study uses Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) to come up with a framework and provides an effective reference for vendors to choose their best suppliers for their business. Finally, the following study targets people in the central region in Taiwan as respondents to examine the practicality of the framework.

ABSTRACT Supplier selection plays a significant role in business operations. Various factors have influences on the evaluation and decision-making of supplier evaluation and selection. Supplier selection is a highly complicated process. It is one of the most popular discussion points in academic and business societies. A great number of research articles about supplier selection exist in the literature. These studies have examined the influences of different factors on supplier selection decision-making. This thesis aims to examine the literature in a specified period of time to identify the changes and tendency of the main criteria which mostly influence the supplier selection and evaluation decision-making. To reach the research purpose, this study has reviewed more than 30 articles published in the period between 2000 and 2015 which are drawn from a big research database. Based on the examination of these articles were completed the critical analysis and systematic review. Research findings reveal that the traditional criteria like cost, quality, delivery, and others are still the most common factors used in the supplier selection process. Two new criteria regarding the corporate social responsibility and environmental issues are added to the already existed factors. The present study also summarized the top ten criteria that were most cited in the literature and discussed the meanings and importance of these ten criteria. According to the research findings, practical and academic suggestions are also addressed in the thesis. Key Words:bibliometric analysis, criteria for supplier selection, ystematic review, supplier selection.

The purchasing function directly affects the competitive ability of a firm. Since the determination of suitable suppliers from a set of suppliers has become a key strategic consideration, managers need to periodically evaluate suppliers on the basis of their products quality to select suppliers whose quality characteristics of products meet the standards. The fuzzy data commonly existing in our reality world, in this fuzzy environment, the quality-based supplier selection is proposed in this paper. The quantification of the process capability is effective to understand the quality of the units shipped from a supplier. For the purpose of constructing the membership function of fuzzy capability-index estimate for each supplier, we apply resolution identity theorem, a renowned result in fuzzy sets theory, in terms of solving optimization problems. The preferable suppliers are selected by using a ranking method of fuzzy preference relation of suppliers. Finally, a case study of touch screen is provided to describe the applicability incorporating the fuzzy data into the problem of quality-based supplier selection and evaluation. Keywords: Supplier selection; Fuzzy number; Resolution identity; Fuzzy preference relation; Optimization.
