ENGLISH ABSTRACT: There are numerous supply chain planning processes and activities that need to take place to ensure efficiency and effectiveness in a company. For the case study retailer, these planning processes and activities contribute to the end goals and objectives of the company. In order to reach these goals and objectives, the importance and contribution of each of the planning processes and activities must be determined. Supply chain planning can provide a company with a competitive advantage, but it can also lead to catastrophic events when it is not fully utilised or poorly executed. A case study was done on a South African sports retailer to determine to what extent the different supply chain planning processes and activities contribute to the end goals and objectives of this retailer and how these goals and objectives are tracked within the company. The implementation of planning processes and -activities were also investigated and what the consequences may be when the planning processes and activities are poorly executed. Goals and objectives which were given to the retailer‟s planners were investigated and thoroughly studied. Some of these goals included achieving effective stock policies, managing gross sales margins for products and accurate forecasting. A hybrid research method was used to gather both qualitative and quantitative data. Interviews were conducted with planners in the company to explore their current planning methods as well as to highlight the shortcomings thereof. A job satisfaction questionnaire determined the motivators and hygiene factors (where hygiene factors refer to factors such as the employee‟s relationships with their supervisor, salaries and working conditions) of the employees in the company. A low level of motivators and hygiene factors may contribute to employee‟s responses at the workplace: exit, voice, loyalty and neglect. The importance of supply chain planning in the sports retail industry and the shortcomings this retailer has on supply chain planning methods were determined and the crucial role planning plays in this retailer was effectively determined and comprehended. Areas for improvement include, realistic budgeting and planning, enhanced forecasting methods and investing in employee training. Results also show that the retailer is managing effective levels of planning to reach the goals and objectives of the company. However, there are key areas for improvement where focus should be placed upon.

Abstract:
In the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) industry, the pressure to accelerate the deployment of 5G technology has created a new competitive environment for businesses. This technology not only enables lower latency, but also higher number of connected devices, higher amounts of shared data, and faster. The growing demand from customers is pressuring every stage of the supply chain to become more efficient. In this industry, achieving a short time-tomarket is vital to stay ahead of competitors and position the company as a trend-setter in the eyes of customers. Therefore, it has become necessary to overall shorten lead times and deliver products in a faster way. This study was performed in collaboration with Ericsson AB, more specifically in the Ericsson Outbound Supply EMEA. Recent escalations from customers have shown that Ericsson’s ways of working to handle customer purchase orders are not being efficient. In many cases, it is taking longer to process the order than the lead times agreed on the contract with the customer. As a result, this study investigates how automation technologies can improve end-to-end order flows, how these can affect Ericsson as an organisation and its workforce, as well as which factors must be taken into consideration when implementing automation. In order to support the investigation, an analysis of the issues most frequently affecting hardware deliveries to customers was also conducted through the Spiderweb program. The latter is an internal improvement initiative of Ericsson Supply, focused on improving Ericsson’s order handling flows for the Market Area Europe and Latin America. The study was based on the following research questions: How can automation technologies help to improve Supply’s performance? How does automation impact the company as an organisation, its culture and workforce? How can the improvement methodology followed in the Spiderweb drive automation discoveries? Qualitative data was primarily collected through meetings with Spiderweb program drivers and 11 interviews held with different stakeholders at Ericsson Supply. Conclusively, this study indicates that the four critical factors that will require further developments for automation in Supply to become a reality are: its culture; the establishment of a data-driven organisation; the coordination of different processes and communication between dependent stakeholders; and the technical implementation of automation technology and other tools used locally. It is also concluded that the full potential of automation will only be realised if accompanied by a corresponding development of the workforce, and a clear communication of the strategy from top management. Lastly, the main recommendation to Supply regards the need to standardise order handling processes and simplify order flows, prior to any automation implementation in Supply.

Cheung, Kwok Yuen. "Site-wide and supply chain optimisation for continuous chemical processes." Thesis, Imperial College London, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10044/1/8325.

Full text
Abstract:
Petrochemical manufacturing is a typical example of a continuous chemical process, which usually involves several interconnected process units. The unit interactions introduce many degrees of freedom for process operation, and also complicate supply chain management. Optimisation is therefore brought in to support decision-making on both process operation and supply chain aspects. In order to enhance operational feasibility and model accuracy, the optimisation should in principle be executed directly in a site-wide fashion and employing igorous process representations. This however results in an extremely large-scale site-wide model. This hinders the continuous process from obtaining the utmost benefit from the optimisation. This thesis hence aims to remove the obstacle by developing a practical direct optimisation method for site-wide supply chain problems. The thesis employed an ethylene process as an example of a continuous process for the solution method development. Based on the process, four types of problems with different complexities were established. They are (i) single-site single-period; (ii) single-site multi-period; (iii) multi-site single-period and (iv) multi-site multi-period. A novel direct optimisation technique, namely gPROMS-Based Application (gBA) Approach, was developed and examined using the example problems. It overcame the difficulty of the large problem size by separating the optiser from the process simulator, gPROMS. This allowed gPROMS to simulate each site and each period in the supply chain one-by-one, and send the required information to the optimiser individually. This avoided computer memory shortage problems, which could be triggered by a simultans optimisation ot the complete supply chain. Other solution approaches were also investigated in the thesis to compare with the gBA approach. For example, Successive Linear Programming (SLP) was used for the single-site single-period problem.

Abstract:
Abstract Problem There is a gap in the knowledge concerning reverse product flows due to a lack of research and empirical data in the field of reverse supply chain management in general. Furthermore, more research is needed to investigate the factors influencing the decision making process regarding the right reverse supply chain recovery option choice for companies in order to close the supply chain loop. Processing product returns has become a critical activity for organisations as the volume of goods flowing back through the supply chain rapidly increases, and the electronics retail industry is not an exception and it could even be considered as the starting point of the reverse supply chain which eventually through recovery options closes the loop for the industry. Purpose The purpose of this thesis is to investigate how product returns are handled in electronics retailing in Sweden, what role retailers of electronics play in closing the loop, and which product recovery options are used. This thesis is developed in order to gain more empirical data about how returned products can be managed in the reverse supply chain. Furthermore, returned product recovery options and factors influencing their choice will be examined as well. Methodology To achieve the purpose of this thesis the qualitative research approach has been chosen and the multiple-case study research strategy applied to collect data through in-depth semi-structured interviews with some of the electronics retailers operating in Sweden. For further in-depth information regarding the recovery options and processes, interviews with recycling centre and workshop have been also conducted. Conclusions The five reverse supply chain processes are applied in practice in the researched electronics retailing in Sweden. From the retailers’ perspective, the main factors influencing the handling of the returned product flows are legislation and corporate citizenship. The retailers have a limited role and significance in the decision-making processes in the reverse supply chain and ultimately in efficiently closing the loop and recovering as much value as possible from the returned products. The retailers outsource their recovery activities and the main criteria for selecting the appropriate recovery option is price. Discussion and future research Managerial implications - The other reverse supply chain managers working in other industries with time-sensitive products could implement the utilisation of the decentralised reverse supply chain design, outsourcing of transportation and recovery activities, and the use of information technology. Research evaluation - The authors encountered the limitations that there is little or no research done in the reverse supply chain from the retailers’ perspective but mainly from the OEMs’. Another limitation of this research could be the limited number of investigated electronics retailers (participants). Furthermore, the research lacks measurements as in this thesis the qualitative data has been used for undertaking the empirical study. Future research – The development of a measurement system for returned product value, the involvement of other members of the reverse supply chain in order to get a full picture of how to close the loop, and the development of a standardised criteria to determine the best recovery option, would be interesting research areas.

Abstract:
RFID is an up-and-coming technology holding promise of closing information gaps in the supply chain. Information is probably the biggest driver of performance in supply chains today and information control is seen as a huge advantage in management. This report addresses how RFID may contribute to improve management and supply chain within warehouse management. By doing a case study of three Norwegian businesses the report finds processes in management and logistics. An evaluation of where a theoretical RFID implementation may impact show that RFID increases data and data collection in almost all identified processes. Both management and logistics in general have the potential of automating several processes and collected data results in increased information sharing. When businesses handle identified challenges in the technology RFID have huge possibilities in improving warehouse management and the supply chain in general.

Abstract:
Thesis (PhD (Logistics))--University of Stellenbosch, 2006.
Conventional supply chain integration concepts focus primarily on the internal and external integration of individual supply chains (can be viewed as intra-supply chain integration). Due to the highly integrated nature of petrochemical value chains, related supply chains should also be integrated by taking account of enterprise/industry-wide synergies and interdependencies (can be viewed as inter-supply chain integration). Inter-supply chain integration can typically develop along three dimensions: - Upstream feed clusters (upstream in the chemical value chain) - Downstream product clusters (downstream in the chemical value chain) - Macro logistics network clusters (within and across related logistics networks for liquid bulk, dry bulk, packaged goods and gases) This dissertation presents a generic framework of applicable intra- and inter-supply chain planning processes that supports related long- (strategic), medium- (tactical) and short-term (operational) supply chain decisions for large-scale petrochemical companies. This type of companies has to manage relative complex supply chains. Highly complex supply chains (due to an extensive product portfolio, supplier base, customer base, manufacturing processes, transportation, and management processes and systems) require far more advanced planning processes than simple supply chains. Advanced supply chain planning processes cover an extended supply chain scope, deal with longer time horizons, and utilize more sophisticated analytical techniques and decision support systems. An extensive literature study, supplemented by empirical research in the South African petrochemical industry, provided the foundation for the advanced supply chain planning framework concluded in this dissertation. Semi-structured interviews and a questionnaire presented to an informed audience constitute the empirical research conducted. The related best practices, concepts, approaches followed, and level of advancement in three supply chain planning dimensions were derived. To guide petrochemical companies along the planning advancement journey, the roadmap developed can be utilized for the application and implementation of the advanced supply chain planning framework. This roadmap articulates the advancement stages, dimensions, characteristics, and triggers to advance. Typical characteristics associated with the advancement stages and dimensions provide the means for a company to assess their level of progression. The essential mechanisms that can enable interventions are also articulated.

Large pharmaceutical companies struggle to find innovative ways to reduce work-in-process inventory in their production facilities. In our research, we focus on the tradeoff between inventory and production capacity through investing in new facilities and equipment. This tradeoff will depend on the company's objectives and what it is willing to give up in return for reducing inventory. We found that increasing capacity to reduce work-in-process inventory by investing in new facilities is not always the most favorable approach in terms of net present value. However, for flexibility or lead-time improvements, it may make sense to proceed with the investment. We developed multiple scenarios considering the company's future plans to reduce inventory or grow. These scenarios provide insights into the factors that improve the attractiveness of the investments and those that do not. Our financial analysis along with the guidelines and procedures that we have developed help the sponsor company most effectively reach its goal to reduce its work in process inventory.

As supply chains become more global and complex, it increases the importance of end-to-end visibility into the material, information, and financial flows of a firm. This work covers various aspects of supply chain visibility such as current status, its benefits, and the benefit-enabling mechanisms, traced through multiple stages of research, including a survey, round- table, and detailed interviews. Specifically, we developed a multi-case study analysis of supply chain visibility solutions (SCVS) and analyzed its effect on key supply chain processes. A qualitative "with and without SCVS" framework was employed to understand the changes observed in key business processes at several companies that recently implemented SCVS. This was combined with a cross-case study analysis to evaluate the effect of SCVS on the efficiency and effectiveness dimensions of process performance. We found that SCVS has a direct positive effect on data management processes via benefit-enabling mechanisms such as automation, standardization, and better raw data. Key operational processes, such as shipment and inventory management, risk management, and procurement and partner collaboration, were affected positively by SCVS via the antecedent data management process. The strength of impact of SCVS on key operational processes varies by company characteristics and the stage of implementation of SCVS. This research is most useful to companies considering implementing an SCVS to understand the potential benefits of SCVS and the underlying mechanisms. Managers can increase the relevance and robustness of results by extending the case-study analysis to include more companies with similar operating characteristics.

Abstract:
This dissertation focuses on topics related to the value of real-time information and/or to supply uncertainties due to uncertain lead-times and yields in supply chains. The first two of these topics address issues associated with freight transportation, while the remaining two topics are concerned with inventory replenishment. We first assess the value of dynamic tour determination for the traveling salesman problem (TSP). Given a network with traffic dynamics that can be modeled as a Markov chain, we present a policy determination procedure that optimally builds a tour dynamically. We then explore the potential for expected total travel cost reduction due to dynamic tour determination, relative to two a priori tour determination procedures. Second, we consider the situation where the decision to continue or abort transporting perishable freight from an origin to a destination can be made at intermediate locations, based on real-time freight status monitoring. We model the problem as a partially observed Markov decision process (POMDP) and develop an efficient procedure for determining an optimal policy. We determine structural characteristics of an optimal policy and upper and lower bounds on the optimal reward function. Third, we analyze a periodic review inventory control problem with lost sales and random yields and present conditions that guarantee the existence of an optimal policy having a so-called staircase structure. We make use of this structure to accelerate both value iteration and policy evaluation. Lastly, we examine a model of inventory replenishment where both lead time and supply qualities are uncertain. We model this problem as an MDP and show that the weighted sum of inventory in transit and inventory at the destination is a sufficient statistic, assuming that random shrinkage can occur from the origin to the supply system or destination, shrinkage is deterministic within the supply system and from the supply system to the destination, and no shrinkage occurs once goods reach the destination.

Abstract:

The reverse part of the supply chain becomes more and more important due to the legislation, environmental concerns, higher volumes of returns, etc. As a result, companies cannot see the reverse supply chain as the additional costs only and have to think strategically. The right strategy for the reverse supply chain can help to achieve the competitive advantage. However, there are not so many researches made about strategies for the reverse supply chain yet, contrarily to the forward supply chain. Therefore, the need to adopt strategies for the reverse supply chain appears.

The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the applicability of the Lean and the Agile concepts in the Reverse Supply Chain strategy, and to investigate the driving forces and challenges for the implementation of the strategy in the Reverse Supply Chain.

The inductive research approach was applied in this thesis. The qualitative study was the most suitable for the better understanding of the point of view, the attitudes, the perceptions of the interviewed participants regarding a wide range of issues related to the choice, and the implementation of the strategy for the reverse supply chain. Multiple case studies as the research strategy was chosen, thus data was collected from 13 interviews conducted at four companies: Fläkt Woods, Systemair, Swegon and Rettig ICC.

The main conclusions from the analysis of the applicability of the lean and the agile concepts in the reverse supply chain are that the design of the reverse supply chain depends on the characteristics of the returns: the size, the volume, the life cycle, the B2B or the B2C returns; as well the reasons for the returns: the guarantee service/ after warranty service. When weighting the results about the lean and the agile concepts implementation in the reverse supply chain, it appears relatively more likely that none of the companies implement either only the lean or only the agile approach. Due to various reasons, there are different material flows and they require different strategic approaches. The agility is implemented close to the customer in order to ensure speed and high responsiveness. Lean flows are implemented from the manufacturer to the supplier or the third party (recycler, etc.). Even more, the companies seek to find the optimal combination of both strategies, or as it called – leagile. Two different approaches for leagile concept’s implementation are used: preponement and de-coupling point. Driving forces for the strategy implementation are green forces, increasing the demand for improving customer service level, cost reduction, and the new retail marketing strategies. Main challenges for the strategy implementation are the lack of formal operating procedures, the lack of information sharing with the suppliers, ‘false alarm’ returns, the lack of local competence, and the lack of forecasting possibilities.

Kroes, James Raymond. "Outsourcing of supply chain processes: evaluating the impact of congruence between outsourcing drivers and competitive priorities on performance." Diss., Georgia Institute of Technology, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/16146.

Abstract:
The outsourcing of elements of supply chain processes is now an integral component of the operationalization of a firm s competitive business strategy. While the purported goal of outsourcing is usually to derive a competitive advantage in the marketplace, it is not clear whether the outsourcing decisions made by firms are always strategically aligned with their overall competitive strategy. To shed light on this important issue, this research study empirically examines the performance impact of the alignment (congruence) between a firm s competitive priorities (cost, flexibility, innovativeness, quality, and time) and the drivers of its outsourcing decisions. First, we develop and validate a survey instrument used to collect data for this study from manufacturing firms operating in the United States. Next, we use structural equation modeling to examine the impact of alignment between individual competitive priorities and related groups of outsourcing drivers. This analysis finds a significant positive relationship between outsourcing alignment and performance for a number of competitive priorities. Finally, we use cluster analysis to develop a taxonomy of manufacturing strategies which are tested to determine the relationship between the alignment of outsourcing decisions and performance. The taxonomic investigation identifies three unique clusters of firms based on their competitive priorities and then determines alignment between each cluster strategy and outsourcing to be significantly associated with better performance. To the best of our knowledge, there are no studies in the literature that address the issue of strategic congruence between the outsourcing drivers and competitive priorities of a firm, and the impact of such congruence on firm performance.

This thesis examines how simple weekly demand planning process can improve inventory levels and customers service levels at the Gillette Company. The processes designed by the project team has been tested and executed in a real production environment. The weekly forecast volumes generated by the demand planning team were successfully deployed by the manufacturing plant throughout the course of the project. By successfully executing this simple demand planning process, the project was able to shorten factory firm periods, eliminate the supply warehouse, and de-link demand plan to trade-flow commitments to improve overall supply chain performance.

Abstract:
To make a difference among the energy intensive process industries, this dissertation addresses production planning and supply chain planning problems related to industrial energy management issues. The energy issue is turning more and more important from different angles, involving price as well as environmental problems due to climate change leading to political pressure on all energy users. The process industry sector is one of the largest users of energy, and thus important to analyse. Process industries are also capital intensive and operate on large and expensive process equipment, making it imperative to plan their production well in order to reach preferable capacity utilisation. Therefore this dissertation strives to locate the most important energy management issues for the long term profitability of process industries, and investigates the  symbiotic effects of including energy issues in production and supply chain planning. Three different studies at three case companies are carried out, analysed, and presented in five papers. The cases represent the process industry sectors: chemicals, pulp, and steel. Both qualitative case study methodologies as well as quantitative mathematical modelling and optimisation approaches have been practiced. The research questions are analysed from both an energy system and from a production process point of view, separately as well as combined. Energy is somewhat considered to be the main workforce for process industries and this dissertation exemplifies some of its most important dimensions in this context. Several prerequisites for putting energy management on the strategic agenda are located in a specialty chemical industry where the importance of introducing a strategic perspective on energy, the way energy is used, and the possibilities of increasing alternative revenue from utilising by- and/or co-products differently are pinpointed. Approaches for including energy issues in planning processes are also suggested in terms of a MILP model for the entire supply chain of a pulp company, including decisions on purchase and transportation of raw maerials, production allocation, energy mix, and distribution. Another example is presented based on the perspectives of economics of scale and lot sizing through economic order quantity principles in a steel company. By using real company data, energy smart approaches in planning and scheduling are developed with respect to the most important intersections between the production processes and their supporting energy system. The accumulated resource intensity and embedded energy could, and probably should, hence be more fairly  reflected in the product price. The research finally shows some possible impact with including energy issues in a production and supply chain planning model. By planning differently, production prioritisations can be done, and it is not only possible without any large investments, but also prosperous with savings on both energy and money within reach. To conclude, planning of production and supply chain has either a direct or an indirect impact on the energy cost-effectiveness of a company. This dissertation argues that such impact also exists in its mutual form, and is very important when the energy issues are large enough, as they often are in the energy intensive process industry sector. Decision makers should thus beware of the short end of the stick that might be  devastating in the long run, but also aware of all the possibilities that can bring success and prosperity when the future begins.

The export market for live cattle emerged and grew in the last years, promoting significant changes in the agribusiness as a whole, especially the Livestock of Brazil and particularly of the state of Pará Such increase led Brazil to position itself among the largest exporters of live cattle, which, combined with the lack of research in Production Engineering, motivated the study of logistics and supply chain of this new market. There are many agents participating in the supply chain, which assist in the implementation of activities and interaction between links in order to differentiate themselves and to be competitive. Therefore, the objective of this study is to map the chain of exports of live cattle from one company in the State of Pará. In order to characterize the supply chain, this study is based on Lambert and Cooper (2000) in their macro analysis, and on Bowersox (2001) in its micro analysis, logistics processes with the objective to contribute to existing knowledge in this subject. The result of the work is an evaluation of the company and its processes as part of the supply chain and also the description of the logistics processes of its various activities.

Abstract:
Currently, there are many software applications handling planning, scheduling, material management, invoicing, workflow management within an organization. However, companies need to plan across a wider span of activities and need to collaborate with their partners to optimize the '
'
overall'
'
profitability. This requires collaborative planning within a supply chain and exchange of planning data. Collaborative Planning, Forecast and Replenishment (CPFR) is one of the most prominent initiatives on Collaborative Planning. However, CPFR only provides guidelines, but does not mandate any technology for the definition and execution of planning process. Therefore, companies have difficulties to define and deploy CPFR solutions and there is a need for a Service Oriented, Open Platform for the definition and execution of collaborative planning processes involving many supply chain tiers. In this work, first of all, the building blocks of the planning process have been defined as machine processable definitions in OASIS ebXML Business Specification Language (ebBP). CPFR Designer Tool developed provides the users to visually create CPFR Processes in ebBP and to convert this ebBP process definition automatically to an executable business process using OASIS Business Process Execution Language (WS-BPEL). In this way, the supply chain enterprises are able to create customized CPFR processes which are in integration with the underlying intra-enterprise planning processes. Moreover, in the thesis, a CPFR Process Execution Environment is prepared where the generated CPFR Process can be executed. The work presented in this thesis is realized as a part of IST-213031 iSURF project funded by European Commission under ICT FP7.

Abstract:
The increased use of returnable packaging have given rise to the trend of packaging logistics. The operation of returnable packaging is challenging for global companies due to thecomplexity in the process and information flows. Companies invest in returnable packagingsystems in order to ensure quality throughout the supply chain. Despite the large investments inan returnable packaging fleet, it is often poorly controlled, leading to vast tied-up capital andshrinkage. This thesis proposes how the visibility and control of the system is affected by thecategorization of packaging and the allocation of responsibilities throughout the packaginghandling process. Theoretical and empirical studies were carried out, the theoretical part helpeddefine the problem. A case study were performed at Scania CV AB in Södertälje, Sweden. Results of this study shows that categorization of packaging is not sufficient to attain a suitablelevel of control in an packaging handling process. Although it could be used as a supporting orgoverning documents for standardization in the process. Findings showed that theresponsibilities in the process should be centralized in as large extent as possible. Although ifthe current process is lacking visibility and control, the benefits of centralized control may belost.

Abstract:
This research evaluates the relationship of social capital with the integration of processes in the supply chain management in companies of the real sector in Colombia, mediated by their organizational size and the uncertainty of the environment. For this purpose, 232 companies associated to the real sector in Colombia were surveyed and with the information obtained, multivariate analysis of structural equations was made with the SPSS and AMOS tools. As a result, there is a significant direct relationship between social capital and the integration of processes in the supply chain management, thus social capital was identified as a fundamental determinant in efforts to integrate the supply chain, unlike the mediating variables analyzed (size and uncertainty of the environment).

Abstract:
Globalized markets, resources and means of communication reshaped the modern world. Today global supply chains are more agile and vulnerable to any crises. There is a need to have appropriate measures and strategies to dismantle and mitigate effects of any small or major disasters in the supply chains. Today supply chains are both directly and indirectly under influence of crises. The purpose is to study how companies assess and avoids risk in their supply chains and how they mitigate risks. Two cases have been used to explore the subject. Primary face-to-face interviews have been conducted with representatives from the two companies. Further secondary documentation from the companies has been analyzed. Managers are well aware of the risks embedded in their supply chains. They have processes to forecast and handle disruptions. Redundant resources are used in various extents to prepare for unforeseen events. To ensure uninterrupted supply different techniques such as dual-sourcing is used. Even though they see themselves as prepared companies are having problems mitigating the impact of uncertain events and these disruptions can have a big negative impact on their supply chains.

Abstract:
Background: Companies strive to produce as close to customer demand as possible to reduce the cost, inventories, etc. One process that deals with this issue of balancing demand and supply is Sales & Operations Planning (S&OP). Seco Tools is a company with their head-office located in Fagersta, Sweden, which is experiencing high inventory levels and a need of cutting cost. The ongoing project Supply Chain Planning at Seco Tools resulted in the implementation of a new software which enables them to improve demand, inventory, and supply planning. As a result of the improved planning ability, a new S&OP process is developed and in need for improvement. Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to evaluate the current S&OP process from the Supply Chain Planning project and to suggest future improvements for Seco Tools AB. Research objectives: 1. Study and describe the current S&OP process at Seco Tools. 2. Analyse and identify differences in Seco Tools’ S&OP process compared to the literature and a benchmark company. 3. Perform deeper analyses within financial integration and the use of KPIs in Seco Tools´ S&OP process. 4. Suggest future improvements to Seco Tools regarding their S&OP process based on the identified differences from research objective 2 and the deeper analysis from research objective 3. Method: The planning report set the framework for the carrying through of the thesis. A literature study regarding S&OP and a case study performed at Seco Tools regarding their S&OP have been done in parallel. Seco Tools’ S&OP process has been studied and described with the help of interviews, observations, and internal documents. Analysis was made where Seco Tools S&OP was compared to the theoretical S&OP and the S&OP at AstraZeneca. The analysis led to recommendations to Seco Tools regarding improvements in their S&OP process. Conclusions: Two opportunities for improvement were highlighted during the analysis of Seco Tools S&OP. They were financial integration and the use of cross-functional KPIs covering all the departments that were suggested to be involved in S&OP at Seco Tools. Seco Tools should integrate their finance in the process to compare S&OP against the business plan, and the company’s strategy should be well understood by the participants in S&OP. The knowledge of the company’s strategy together with the right authorities in the process will improve the decision making in Seco Tools’ S&OP. Seco Tools also need to implement an S&OP scorecard with KPIs that covers all departments in the company and the strategy as well. This helps to further develop cross-functionality and to early on make root cause analysis of identified problems. Cross-functionality and KPIs are believed to be general recommendations that all companies can use as well, not only something that Seco Tools can take advantage of. A template for an S&OP scorecard especially for Seco Tools has been made. It contains 16 cross-functional KPIs covering all steps and departments involved in S&OP at Seco Tools.

The level of importance given to processes under Supply Chain responsibility has increased in the last few years. For many companies the Supply Chain has become a critical factor when it comes to achieving competitive advantage in the markets and a rather relevant target for strategy. This master’s dissertation had the objective to identify the strategy proposition and the outline of the structure of processes used to build a Supply Chain integrated model of management as well as to analyze the contributions of the SCOR model towards the context of the researched company. The research strategy used herewith was an exploratory case study within a company that would provide the means for evidence from its management model. A documentary research was firstly carried out so as to identify the organizational context, listing the events that took place, the organization of the processes that support the integrated management model and the organizational and strategic motivation that led to the setup of the Supply Chain footprint. It was possible to identify the strategies and Supply Chain initiatives alignment through the analysis of content in categories that covered issues such as strategy, performance and integrated supply chain model, performance propositions and the concept of business value, and the realignment of the functional structure within an integrated concept of processes supported by practices and an extended vision of performance. Based on the documentary research and content analysis some contributions were recommended having the SCOR model applied to the current supply chain management model of the company analyzed, with the intention of collaborating with the improvement of the current integrated supply chain management model. The SCOR model analysis of Supply Chain operations and integrated management model is justified because it would not be possible to defend a position and offer contributions to Supply Chain operations without using a conceptual model or processes as reference. This case study allowed for the observation that Supply Chain started to be viewed in a strategic way when the Supply Chain management and business objectives alignment took place and from the definition of Supply Chain as an essential competence to the company’s market competition, developing an organization of processes and structure to support the proposed strategy.

Abstract:
The research contained in this thesis addresses a major industry-threatening problem where a complete change in methodology and technology was required to replace simple manual methodology developed more than fifty years ago. The problem was solved by the implementation of a high risk and complex high technology project in two phases. The thesis describes how research into the fundamental techniques available was utilised to develop the solution following the acquisition of the knowledge required to apply the techniques in a systematic manner. An holistic study of the inbound supply chain and conversion process was necessary to achieve the depth of process change needed. It was required to achieve a step change in the now unsafe working practices that had developed over the years since the start of the wet cast industry in the Cotswolds. Starting with an ergonomic study that uncovered the priority areas for automation, the study called on the use of a wide range of research techniques from: brainstorming; structured interviews; process mapping; to the invention and innovation associated with the introduction of leading edge technology combining linear motion devices with robots and introducing emerging radio frequency identification technology to initiate product changeovers. Radio data systems were used to introduce lean, Just-in-Time (JIT) concepts to the inbound supply chain By embarking on a review of the key techniques required to achieve success, each was evaluated to enable decisions to be made on their application to the prime objective of completing an automation project that eliminated health and safety issues and achieved a major reduction in conversion costs. The major cultural change required from the existing workforce was recognised at an early stage and the thesis describes the steps that were taken to minimise the impacts of inevitable job losses and social changes required to operate an automated plant over 24 hours without stopping for breaks. With a long history of operating only dayshifts, with occasional nightshifts in peak season, it was necessary to implement a new and unique shift operating system with variable shift lengths over the year to coincide with peak and low seasons. Mitigating the harmful effects from operating rotating shift systems was researched and a strategy for the `Social Project' running in parallel with the `Technology Project' was produced. Information associated with the social changes involved was completely transparent with full consultation taking place with the workforce and the trade union representing them. The social project underpinned the high-tech project to create the success achieved from the study. High-tech complex projects are known to carry a high degree of risk associated with them. In order to combat these risks it was necessary to apply a whole range of risk management techniques and to consider risk in an holistic manner. Incorporating financial, environmental, safety and completion time risks in the risk assessment/mitigation procedures applied. Many projects include the application of risk assessment and mitigation procedures before the project starts but few employ them in the dynamic manner over all phases of the project advocated in the thesis. The evaluation of the study outcome suggests further areas of risk management improvement to aid in the execution of further projects of the nature described in the thesis. A key element in the success of the automation project was the development of a detailed specification of the Phase 2 full automation project. This was possible after completion of the smaller Phase I project and was responsible for achieving the high degree of certainty demonstrated during the execution of the second phase. Having the opportunity of devising the automation innovation from first principles using prototype development techniques helped enormously in creating the new paradigm in wet cast manufacturing processes which eliminated the major health and safety issues and produced cost savings that enabled the company to compete successfully against low-cost Far Eastern imported products.

Abstract:
Long-term Supply Chain Capacity Planning (SCCP) aims to define the plan of all actions to perform that will shape the available and required capacity of supply chains over several years. When performing long-term SCCP, companies are confronted with a multitude of decision options and uncertainty sources as well as a highly dynamic supply chain environment. Each company configures its own Decision Support System (DSS) to perform SCCP, composed of a decision-making process, an information system, and people. Companies can take advantage of existing decision-making processes and information systems to build their own SCCP DSS. However, the literature review on existing decision-making processes and information systems for SCCP revealed the following three major limitations: first, existing solutions are time-consuming. This constrains companies to consider only a small number of alternative scenarios associated with decision options and uncertainty sources. And it makes it difficult to keep SCCP analysis up to date. Second, existing solutions are designed to perform SCCP analysis on predefined supply chains without considering the whole set of potential alternative configurations. Third, decision-makers are reluctant to accept optimization methods because of the lack of visibility of the analysis leading to the recommended solution. Therefore, this thesis describes a new SCCP DSS proposal aiming to overcome these limitations. It is composed of an SCCP decision-making process proposal relying on an SCCP information system proposal. The SCCP decision-making process proposal contains two processes: implementation and routine. The SCCP information system proposal contains two software programs: a computational software program and a business intelligence software program. The SCCP DSS proposal was validated by undertaking two industrial pilot projects with two industrial partners. The following two major benefits have been confirmed: first, SCCP analysis can be performed in encompassing a multitude of decision options and uncertainty sources at a pace allowing updates in accordance with the pace of supply chain changes. Second, it provides decision-makers with the visibility and understanding of the impacts of their respective decisions and uncertainty sources which bolster their confidence in the decisions they can make. Finally, avenues for future research have been identified, including an opportunity for designing a hyperconnected SCCP DSS that automatically gathers information and triggers decision-making meetings when necessary rather than on a predefined frequency

Abstract:
When the African National Congress (ANC) took office in 1994 it introduced various policies that would govern budgetary and financial reforms in South Africa. The main objective was to modernize the management of the public sector. Even though government Departments have started implementing the Supply Chain Management strategies, there are still some challenges and deficiencies that hinder appropriate implementation. The key research objectives of the study is to investigate and evaluate the implementation of Supply Chain Management in service delivery with specific focus in procurement processes of goods and services in the Eastern Cape Department of Local Government and Traditional Affairs This study has demonstrated perceptions in the implementation of Supply Chain Management (SCM) within the Department of Local Government and Traditional Affairs in the Eastern Cape Province, South Africa. The overwhelming majority of participants have shown dissatisfaction with the implementation of SCM. Service providers argue that there is no opportunity for them to develop as Small, Micro and Medium Enterprises (SMMEs) and only those service providers who are fully developed benefit from SCM. The study intends to establish and highlight the challenges that the Eastern Cape Department of Local Government and Traditional Affairs is presently faced with in regard to implementation procurement processes among staff members, managers and service providers This study is mainly qualitative but also exposes the reader to the quantitative research method

Abstract:
Currently, the complexities of the supply chain impose enormous challenges on organizations. This has intensified the need and constant search for an efficient and resilient management. However, the risks that threaten it arise aggressively in any location in the logistics chain and its impact may not always be favorably overcome by companies (Mulyati, 2015). Likewise, managers of the risk management area of the supply chain must manage many risks in their increasingly competitive environments, this meant cushioning uncertainties and probable disruptions. Risk management can be an effective approach to dealing with these uncertainties (David Simchi-Levi, 2015). The purpose of this document is to explore the phenomenon of risk management, as well as the possible strategies applied to the probability of risk in the supply chain. Therefore, the development of this research will contribute to the academic contributions obtained in recent years, in accordance with the proposed theme. It also has as one of its main objectives to add and consolidate the various sources of research, approaches, strategies and evidence of management and treatment of risks within the supply chain. In this sense, the information obtained will make it possible not only to be used by different organizations, but also to increase the outlook and perspectives of the risk managers, in order to make a decision based on the experience and results of other organizations located around of the world.

Abstract:
This examination work aims to describe how a supply chain around the biggest pellets factory in Sweden will be configured in a logistic perspective. The plant and associated infrastructure are in the building phase and will have production start on the 2 November 2009. The key question that is set in this examination work is to recognize the logistic processes which are essential for an effective flow of materials and information that link the source of supply with the ultimate customer. In order to get the answer, a flowcharting of these supply chain processes is required for understanding the pipeline activities such as input and storage of raw material, the production system and the output of pellets to the customers. The basis for this supply chain map is a model-based representation of these logistic processes and activities that are involved around the pellets factory. This model was configured according to scientific theories and the supply chain's fundamental concept. In these maps, the model will highlight the network of inter-linked activities in the system and finally show the opportunities for recommendations and improvements in productivity through reengineering those logistic processes.

Abstract:
Upcycling of textiles is a well-known method to remake worn textiles and decrease the environmental impact coming from the textile industry. Many fast fashion companies have tried to implement upcycling in their own textile value chains to become more circular. Although the effort is good in theory, there is more to be done to get better efficiency when it comes to upcycling textile fashion products. The purpose of this report was to study the obstacles in the textile upcycling chain for small-scaled actors that are engaged in design driven upcycling. This report partly investigates a specific textile value chain that is based on redesigning home textiles that comes from textile consumer waste. The report investigates the collaboration between supplier, designer and manufacturer in this specific value chain. This was by outlining their current communication and process steps. The report intends to form a ground for creation of communication tools for actors working similarly. Re:textile at Science Park Borås is a project that is working towards developing new design principles, business models and production systems in the textile industry for a better circular flow system. The cooperation with Anna Lidström, Artistic Director at Re:textile, made it possible to investigate the upcycling industry and identify the obstacles in the pre-production and production process. For collecting information for this report, data research and interviews with Swedish companies have been done. The companies that attended the interviews were from different companies in the textile upcycling industry, that were provided with as much information as possible for the analysis. The companies that attended the interviews were from different companies in the textile upcycling industry. The companies were Rave Review, XV Production, Björkåfrihet and SIPTex. The information from the interviews contributed a ground for the analysis. The semi-structured interviews varied from telephone interviews and visits. The compilations from the interviews have been carefully used to answer the reports research questions. Conclusions are presented as obstacles for the textile upcycling chain at design driven small-scaled actors. One obstacle is to cater bigger quantities of textile consumer waste that keeps the same quality. Another obstacle is the way of ensuring the quality of the product through the value chain to consumers. The third obstacle is that the communication tools are not written according to any principles which contribute to mistakes in the manufacturing process.

Abstract:

Competition on today’s market is fierce. Providing a defect-free product is no more a competitive advantage. Now money and focus is put on managing the supply chain, a competitive tool to thriving in today’s business climate. There are two distinct flow pipelines: the order information transfer pipeline and the product transfer pipeline, both dependent on the collaboration efforts of individuals.

Evolving within supply chain management equals integrating the supply chain from basic to complex; from baseline or functional to internal or external. Bringing focus to where it is found to be lacking, this literary study highlights and connects issues that may arise during implementation of external supply chain integration. The focal point is thus on employee reactions to change, with each stage of implementation that the implementation issues connect to. Simultaneously, the study provides (pre)requisites to management during the different stages, which would support the implemented transition in its different phases.

The result of this study is a Manger Model that gives an overview of each of the implementation stages, the requisites for management and issues regarding employees at each of the stages. Constructed to be applicable to more than just external integration the model encompasses all the gathered models and theories through a discussion of not only the complexity of the internal and the external supply chain, but also the complex nature of the individuals caught within the implementation, both from the manager’s as well as the employee’s point of view.

Gustafson, Anders. Thesis, Linköping University, Department of Science and Technology, 2003. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-2141.

Full text
Abstract:

The purpose of this final thesis is to analyse the internal processes at Å&R Carton in Norrköping and give proposals to reduce time in the Supply Chain. One way to fulfill the purpose is to use Process Based Analys and split the organisation in different processes. Process Based Models have then been constructed by studying litterature, benchmarking, internal documents and making a lot of interviews. The analys shows that different processes must be changed to make the flow through the Supply Chain more efficient. The analys give us also recommendations like attitude investigations and implementation of ECR. The conclusion is that Å&R Carton have great potential to reduce time in the Supply Chain if the management are active, follow the recommendations and show the employees the way about.

Abstract:
Abstract Title: The wild boar chain- An evaluation study of the market of wild boar meat in southern Sweden Course: Bachelor Thesis in Business Administration, Controller 15 hp (2FE24E) Institution: School of Business and Economics at Linnaeus University in Växjö Authors: Victoria Fagerlund Larsson, Anton Lindh and Max Börjesson Tutor: Elin Funck Examiner: Pia Nylinder   Keywords: Logistics processes, processes, narrow section, bottleneck, efficiency, improvement, quality, productivity, process mapping and evaluation. Background: No more than 15% of wild boar meat reaches the market because of the issues surrounding the market. It exists of obstacles and bottlenecks in the chain that hinder an effective market. The rest of the 85% of wild boar meat that does not reach the market is consumed by hunters and wasted because of population control and pest control because wild boars cause damage for farmers. This leads to partially wasted meat which could have been sold on the market for profits. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to map the process of the logistic chain for wild boar meat in southern Sweden. The difficulties that exist today in the logistic chain will be identified through process mapping. We also give suggestions for potential improvements, supported by relevant theory. Overcoming these difficulties will enable a more efficient logistic chain, with more wild boar meat on the market and increased profitability for the different actors that operate within the chain. Method: This essay uses a process evaluation study to be able to get an overview of the processes and what needs to change. The empirical material was collected through semi-structured interviews. Conclusion: The market for wild boar meat in Sweden has been identified through process mapping. Problems have been visualized and potential solutions have been presented. This paper has showed large fluctuations in both demand and supply. That means that it is difficult to make forecasts. We suggest forecasts as a tool for predicting the fluctuations. The sharing of information between the different parties will be considerably better if stores and the plants that handle wild boar meat in Sweden digitalize the forecasts. That would increase the inflow and the outflow to the market. This would result in a better logistic chain for wild boar meat.

Abstract:

"To investigate and evaluate the implementation of the supply chain management in service delivery with specific focus on procurement processes of goods and services in the head office of the Eastern Cape department of health." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/1599.

Abstract:
Supply Chain Management is a well recognized managerial tool and government initiative, primarily aimed at improving all the aspects of the procurement activities in government organizations or any type of the sector. It focuses on meeting the needs of the service providers as well as of the customers. In 1994, South African Government came up with new initiatives to manage its budget and finance resources to meet the needs of the people. One of the new initiatives that the new Government introduced was the Supply Chain Management (SCM). The Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, Act No.108 of 1996, as amended regulates procurement through Section 217. The statutes states that “217(1) when an Organ of State in the national, provincial or local sphere of government, or any institution identified in national legislation, contracts for goods or services, it must do so in accordance with a system which is fair, equitable, transparent, competitive and cost-effective The procurement reform processes were supported by the introduction of a number of legislative measures, including the adoption of the Public Financial Management Act (PFMA) and the Preferential Procurement Policy Framework Act (PPPFA). Public Finance Management Act (PFMA) is a financial act that was developed in 1999 to reform the public financial management of South Africa. The Act promotes the objective of good financial management in order to maximise delivery through the efficient and effective use of limited resources. Public Financial Management Act (PFMA) emphasizes on efficiency, transparency and economic utilization of public funds. The Treasury Regulations 16.5.3 states that, ‘when procuring goods and services, the procurement procedures must be in accordance with a system that is fair, equitable, transparent, competitive and cost-effective. Even though government departments have started implementing the Supply Chain Management strategies, there are still some challenges and deficiencies that hinder appropriate implementation. There are some deficiencies in tender award systems, ineffectiveness of SCM training materials, lack of communication between management and SCM or implementing staff as a result the implementing staff is not aware of the organization’s goals regarding supply chain management activities. Lack of monitoring, evaluation and reporting is also another challenge. Due to these challenges, the Head Office of the Eastern Cape Department of Health had incurred some expenses in trying to address these yet the Supply Chain Management has little impact in improving the service delivery. The key research objective of this study is to investigate and evaluate the implementation of Supply Chain Management in service delivery with specific focus in procurement processes of goods and services in Head Office of Eastern Cape Department of Health. The study intends to establish and highlight the challenges that the Head Office of the Eastern Cape Department of Health is presently faced with in regard to implementation of the Supply Chain Management and the impact it has in service delivery. Data gathering techniques which include interviews and questionnaires had been used. The objectives, methodology and results of the study are presented. The conclusions and recommendations had been made with the basis that they will assist the department in improving the implementation of the Supply Chain Management which will have a positive impact in the service delivery. Further steps needs to be taken by the Provincial Treasuries in assisting department to improve in the implementation of the Supply Chain Management. Further research conduct is recommended for all the institutions of the department of Health as this study was focusing on Head Office only.

Wang, Wei. "Sample Average Approximation of Risk-Averse Stochastic Programs." Diss., Georgia Institute of Technology, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/19784.

Full text
Abstract:
Sample average approximation (SAA) is a well-known solution methodology for traditional stochastic programs which are risk neutral in the sense that they consider optimization of expectation functionals. In this thesis we establish sample average approximation methods for two classes of non-traditional stochastic programs. The first class is that of stochastic min-max programs, i.e., min-max problems with expected value objectives, and the second class is that of expected value constrained stochastic programs. We specialize these SAA methods for risk-averse stochastic problems with a bi-criteria objective involving mean and mean absolute deviation, and those with constraints on conditional value-at-risk. For the proposed SAA methods, we prove that the results of the SAA problem converge exponentially fast to their counterparts for the true problem as the sample size increases. We also propose implementation schemes which return not only candidate solutions but also statistical upper and lower bound estimates on the optimal value of the true problem. We apply the proposed methods to solve portfolio selection and supply chain network design problems. Our computational results reflect good performance of the proposed SAA schemes. We also investigate the effect of various types of risk-averse stochastic programming models in controlling risk in these problems.

Abstract:
The fast moving global market has pushed the companies into becoming more and more global and today some companies are even born in the global world. These companies that operate on many markets at the same time are referred to as born global. This study attempts to connect the context of a born global company to the topic of innovation. Literature explains that a company’s level of innovation is related to their competitive advantage in the industry or sector. This thesis concentrates on the trading sector and tries to evaluate how the internal environment of a born global company influences the development of processes of innovation, whereas internal factors are evaluated the organizational structure, strategy and culture.   Since this study is an explorative research on how certain internal factors can be of influence on the process of innovation in a company, we have chosen to conduct a qualitative single case study, for which we have addressed ourselves to the born global trading company The Bufab Group, a worldwide trader of fasteners and small parts. The Group has its head quarter in Värnamo, Sweden and has around 35 sister companies around the world.   Our empirical findings show how this trading company uses its structure, strategy and culture to influence their processes of innovation. The six innovations that have been developed in the last five years and that are a result of the ongoing process of innovation are the implementation of an automated warehouse, realizing a universal ERP system, employing the EDICOM software, using the concept of a HUB-system, introducing an Educational Manager and the introduction of a Global Account Team.   For the reason that the study is a single case study this research cannot provide any general conclusions for the sector of trading. However, our in-depth study of the Bufab Group as a born global trading company has taught us that their structure, strategy and culture show to have a positive effect on the processes of innovation. Firstly it shows how the born global context is of influence on the internal factors of the organizations. Secondly, it shows how a company that has one centralised strategy for the whole group with a relatively centralised decision making system can still manage to maintain a rather low hierarchical structure with short communication lines and an open and transparent culture. Lastly, all of these forces together have managed to enhance good communication, knowledge sharing and the creation of ideas that have been of influence on the enablement of the process of innovation.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Also, the purpose is to explore the Peruvian Cotton Supply Chain, identifying and analyzing the actual management of the processes. Discussing the application of documents and indicators of standardization work in SCM is presented. Building an organized step to support the growth of cotton SME in the long term. The claim that best practices reduces costs is objected to in its general form. The reduction of costs is dependent on how understandable are the SCM processes and the form of supplier integration to the target audience (farmers). The paper presents a more detailed analysis of the impacts have in SCM. This includes a discussion on how to influence the implementation of standardization. Finally, worth noting that the research was based on sources of information from researchers with experience in different scenarios worldwide.

Abstract:
Le chapitre 3 est le premier essai, Environmental Collaboration and Process Innovation in Supply Chain Management with Coordination.
This thesis articulates several important issues in sustainable operations and supply chain management not only to provide insights for enhancing the performance of firms but also to appeal to the enterprises to adopt appropriate means for a better environment of our society. The link from firm level to society level is that, to improve the green performance through better operations management efficiency in firms and supply chains, is an indispensable element to ameliorate the environment in our society. Taking China as an example. Since a few years ago (The Straitstimes, 2017; Stanway & Perry, 2018), the government started to spare no effort in resolving the air pollution problems. An important and useful means is to put strict regulations and monitoring the efforts of firms which will face serious fine if certain standards are not met by random inspection. Therefore, firms have to cooperate for the betterment of its profitability and, more importantly, the environmental impacts. Throughout the endeavor, despite the uncertain future situation, the air quality has gradually improved in China (Zheng, 2018). This thesis, in a more general setting, aims to provide important insights to firms so that they are not only able to meet the regulations but genuinely to make contributions to building a better environment for our future generations. Basically, our goal is to obtain deep understanding of the trade-offs with which companies are faced, and to model the problems for seeking possible solutions and helping firms/supply chains to enhance their performance from a theoretical point of view. Then, indirectly, the work will help firms to realize the importance of developing sustainable operations and supply chain management means on our society. The structure of the thesis is organized as follows. Chapter 2 introduces the thesis in French. Chapter 3 is the first essay, Environmental Collaboration and Process Innovation in Supply Chain Management with Coordination. Chapter 4 includes the contents of the second essay, Remanufacturing of Multi-Component Systems with Product Substitution , and the third essay, Joint Dynamic Pricing and Return Quality Strategies Under Demand Cannibalization, is introduced in Chapter 5. Chapter 6 gives the general concluding remarks of the three essays which is followed by the reference list and the appendices
