Chapter 1: We study gender differences in competitive behavior, running an experiment with Danish schoolchildren. We control for individual performance, risk preferences, confidence, stereotypes, and interactions with the opposite gender and we find Danish girls are 8.4 % less likely to choose a competitive scheme. More-over, we elicit the network of friends within each class and we find that girls are 9.9 % more likely to enter a tournament if one more of her friends competes. An estimated 95% of rural residents use groundwater as their household water supply for drinking and everyday use. Public policy in Montana and through most of the United States dictates no rules about well water testing, only recommends testing be done on a yearly basis. Well water can contain lead, arsenic, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), synthetic organic compounds (SOCs), nitrates, and copper and many other possible contaminants. The first chapter investigates whether East German women became used to the requirement of working full-time under communism and thereby continued to work much longer hours than did their counterparts in the West after unification. The second chapter develops a rational habit formation model in labor supply using the idea of habits outlined in the first chapter.
