Abstract:
This study explores the implementation and impact of Supporting People, a policy of the New Labour and Coalition governments of 1997 to the present designed to provide housing related support to those considered vulnerable. The theoretical framework uses concepts from past studies of implementation, policy networks, governmentality, path dependency, other temporal concepts and a recent heuristic that provides an independent framework for analysing policy success. This conceptual framework was used in exploring the history of care and support services in the UK; assessing the successes and failures of the past. The study then looks at the drivers and policy goals for Supporting People and at some of the key reviews and studies of it thus far. The fieldwork uses a “mixed methods” approach utilising both quantitative and qualitative methods. An initial survey gathered views from a range of supported housing professionals, followed by a series of in-depth interviews with management practitioners from Supporting People funded organisations. Both stages utilised ideas from the conceptual framework in asking about implementation processes and successes and failures of the programme. This section also explores the use of evidence, dissemination and impact. In terms of the Supporting People policy, the study found a number of areas of strengths on which to build e.g. increased funding and improved strategic frameworks, but also many areas of weakness that require improvement. These include protection for funding, consistency across local authorities, fragmented structures of related policy networks and the top-down implementation style of the policy – there were lessons from No Second Night Out (NSNO) – Leicester in this regard. This was a piece of evaluative research carried out in tandem with the main study and integrated into it. The study found a consistent failure to provide adequate services for vulnerable people; services had failed to build up sufficient path dependent processes to protect them from funding and other resources being diverted to other priorities. The lack of a legislative and conceptual consensus around what it means to be “well housed” was key.

Abstract:
School Wide Positive Behavior Supports includes three tiers of support for students. Some students continue to struggle with following school expectations with only tier one supports in place and thus need additional supports. Because of this, tier two interventions have been created to help support these students. Self-monitoring and Check-In/Check-Out (CICO) are both tier two interventions and have been used independently to decrease problem behavior. This study combined these two interventions to teach students to monitor their own behavior and in addition get feedback from their teacher which is already a component of the CICO intervention. A multiple baseline across participants design was used to evaluate the effects of CICO with self-monitoring. Results indicated that CICO with self-monitoring was effective in reducing off-task behavior for one participant while two other participants required the addition of more immediate reinforcement to decrease off-task behavior.

Abstract:
In this thesis we introduce the notion of a cdp-functor on the category of proper schemes over a Noetherian base, and we show that cdp-functors to Waldhausen categories extend to factors that satisfy the excision property. This allows us to associate with a cdp-functor an Euler-Poincaré characteristic that sends the class of a proper scheme to the class of its image. Applying this construction to the Yoneda embedding yields a monoidal proper-fibred Waldhausen category over Noetherian schemes, with canonical cdp-functors to its fibres. Also, we deduce a motivic measure to the Grothendieck ring of finitely presented simplicially stable motivic spaces with the cdh-topology.

Keyes, Sarah E. "Mutual support : an exploration of peer support for people with learning difficulties." Thesis, Northumbria University, 2010. http://nrl.northumbria.ac.uk/3747/.

Full text
Abstract:
Mutual Support is an in depth exploration of the role and impact of peer support by people with learning difficulties. Built on one of the seven aims of Centres for Independent Living, the project has constructed a model of peer support based on accounts of direct experiences from people with learning difficulties. The overall aim of the research was to construct and critique the Mutual Support model of peer support and people with learning difficulties. This thesis reflects the process of that construction. The overall aim was met through a research situation in which knowledge was constructed in the interaction between the researcher and participants. This provided an opportunity for people with learning difficulties to reflect upon their relationships with one another, and the emancipatory potential of that support. The focus of the research was two pre-existing settings involving people with learning difficulties supporting one another: a Theatre Company using Forum Drama to facilitate changes in attitudes and policy, and a course facilitated by people with learning difficulties who mentored small groups. Methods used within the research were based on an Inclusive Research process which prioritises meaningful research interaction that is accessible and guided by participants. The research process intertwined meetings with advisory groups, and contact with other local groups of people with learning difficulties, with formal data collection within the two main settings. One to one experienced-based narrative interviews with people from the two main settings provided multiple opportunities for participants to speak about their experiences of peer support. These interviews formed the data used in formal analysis, which was a continual process, with subsequent interviews being based on views previously expressed. A further comprehensive descriptive content analysis of data, using the tools of Nvivo8 and mind-mapping, took place prior to the outputs of the whole project being evaluated during group sessions with those who had taken part. The emerging model is one of collective support which challenges assumptions about the role and impact of people with learning difficulties supporting one another and their capacity to engage in insightful interpersonal interaction. Mutual Support has the potential to break down barriers to inclusion. Mutual Support also demonstrates the value that people with learning difficulties place on giving and receiving support from one another. The outputs of Mutual Support include contribution to current debate in the areas of service user involvement, inclusive research, and the academic field of Disability Studies.

Full text
Abstract:
The implementation of inclusive education has begun in Hong Kong for over a decade. This research is a mixed methods research consisting of two related studies that examine support for students with special educational needs (SEN) in Hong Kong. The first study explored the effectiveness of inclusive and segregated education in supporting students with intellectual disabilities (IDs). A total of 42 students (19 female and 23 male) attending primary 4 to primary 6 and diagnosed as having mild grade ID participated in this study. Eighteen of them (8 female and 10 male) were from 16 ordinary schools and 24 (11 female and 13 male) were from 3 special schools designed for students with mild grade ID. The two groups were compared based on academic achievement, socio-emotional functioning and self-perception of acceptance, popularity among peers, and intellectual and school status. The results indicated that students in ordinary schools outperformed their counterparts in academic achievement. However, students in special schools were found to have better peer relationships and a lower level of emotional distress in addition to exhibiting more helpful behavior. Their self-perception was also more positive. The second study was conducted to investigate the contextual factors that could have affected the academic achievement, socio-emotional functioning, and self-perception of the two groups of students. To this end, a total of 3 parents, 8 school personnel and 3 students from 2 ordinary schools and 2 special schools were interviewed and 2 classroom observations were conducted. Special schools were found to have lower academic demand. They adopted a functional curriculum designed to strengthen the students’ practical and generic skills and offered various support programs to increase confidence and develop positive attitudes. Small class sizes allowed teachers to use individualized, interactive, and experiential strategies that catered to the students’ individual learning styles and socio-emotional needs. Close home-school collaboration was also maintained. In contrast, ordinary schools followed a standard mainstream curriculum and assessment for all with both teachers and parents exhibiting higher expectations of the students that resulted in more active involvement in the students’ academic learning. These collective factors might have contributed to the better academic achievement of SEN students in ordinary schools and the more positive socio-emotional functioning and self-perception of their counterparts in special schools. The implications of this research for policy makers tasked with the development of and resource allocation for the support system for SEN students, in addition to its effects among practitioners who wish to strengthen current practices and support for SEN students, are discussed.

Abstract:

Mobile phones and electronic gadgets on the market today have become more and more powerful, in both processing power and functionalities. Accessing files and documents residing at users’ home networks via a vast amount of devices is therefore anticipated. The current solution to remote home access, i.e. Virtual Private Network (VPN), is not supported on all different types of devices. In particular, limited processing power and memory footprint on mobile devices such as PDAs and cell phones are not suitable for VPN clients that require high processing power during encryption and decryption of data. In addition, setting up VPN on home network is not a straight-forward task that anyone can complete. Regular users do not have knowledge to set up and configure VPN correctly. It is obviously that we need another approach/method to access home network in an easier manner. The specified system, Mobile Home Access, will provide ubiquitous access to the home network independent of network infrastructures, platforms and terminals. This goal has many challenges and obstacles, such as firewall and routing issues as well as compatibility and the restrictions of the well-known networked file system, i.e. Common Internet File System (CIFS). Based on the previous research project, Mobile Home Access will be implemented as web services and written in Java, the platform independent programming language. XML web services offers intercommunication between applications and protocols running on various network infrastructure. Using web services, the networked file system’s services can be exposed to remote clients. The system will operate in two different modes, the reduced-mapping mode for restricted clients (mobile phones, PDA, etc) and the tunneling mode for rich clients (desktop computers, laptop, etc). This thesis will address and try to overcome challenges associated with the tunneling mode in addition to the design of the overall system.

Abstract:

We prove that if two hyperfunctions on the unit circle have disjoint support, then the convolution of their Fourier coefficients multiplied with a weight is zero when the weight goes to 1. We prove this by using the Fourier-Borel transform and the G-transform of analytic functionals. The proof is inspired by an article by Yngve Domar. In the end of his article he proves the existence of a translation-invariant subspace of a certain weighted l^p-space. This proof has similarities to our proof, so we compare them. We also look at other topics related to Domar's article, for example the existence of entire functions of order less than or equal to 1 under certain restrictions on the axes. We will see how the Beurling-Malliavin theorem gives some answers to this question. Finally, we prove that if two hyperfunctions on the real line have compact and disjoint support, then the convolution of their Fourier transforms multiplied with a weight is zero when the weight goes to 1.

Symonds, Ria. "Evaluating student engagement with mathematics support." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2009. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/14435.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis reports the findings of quantitative and qualitative research to evaluate the effectiveness of mathematics support and to examine the issue of student engagement in relation to its effectiveness. Usage data regarding Loughborough University's Mathematics Learning Support Centre was analysed to understand which students make use of the support and the extent of that usage. It was found that the majority of students who need mathematics support were not accessing the resources. Rich contextual data were gathered by interviews and focus groups, which indicated that a number of barriers had prevented students from initially using the support. However, whilst some students overcame these barriers to become regular users of the support, other students (who were 'at risk' of failing the mathematical component of their courses) did not. Students who were 'at risk' and had not accessed the support lacked the motivation to engage with mathematics and the available support. This thesis also evaluated the effectiveness of a proactive support initiative involving small group teaching. Despite encouraging students to engage with mathematics support, since they did not have to take the initiative themselves, it was revealed that a lack of student engagement had had a profound effect on the success of this support. Qualitative data was analysed to provide an insight as to why students had failed to engage with the initiative. Constructs of students' attitudes towards mathematics and their learning approaches were investigated. In particular, it was found that students who engage with mathematics support are generally well-motivated and cognitively engaged. These students held generally positive attitudes towards mathematics and deployed metacognitive learning strategies by regularly monitoring and directing their learning in order to achieve their high educational aims. This study ... has implications both for research and practice. From a practical perspective, it appears that mathematics support has moved from one of remedial support to one of enhancement. It is recommended that action should be taken to provide extrinsic motivation to encourage engagement with the support. However, from a research perspective, a more rigorous investigation of the students' attitudes and learning approaches and how these constructs relate to their levels of engagement with mathematics support would be useful. Further information in this area could be used to provide further quantification of the efficacy of mathematics support.

Ratti, Victoria. "Exploring person-centred support in adults with intellectual disabilities and challenging behaviour supported by paid carers in the community." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2018. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/10049834/.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: Deinstitutionalisation and the movement of people with intellectual disabilities (ID) to the community have seen the emergence of care philosophies aimed at tailoring services to individuals’ needs. Person-centred support has been widely advocated and considered synonymous of good care. It is useful to investigate if day-to-day support provided by paid carers in the community is person-centred. / Aims: 1. To explore person-centred support and choice in adults with ID and challenging behaviour. 2. To investigate correlates of person-centred support, including challenging behaviour. 3. To investigate whether the results of self-report questionnaires and direct- observations are comparable. / Methods: 1. Self-report measures of person-centred support typically used by staff supporting older adults with dementia were adapted for use by staff supporting adults with ID and challenging behaviour. A measure of choice availability was also updated. 2. A cross-sectional study of 109 paid carers supporting adults with mild to severe ID was conducted to address aims 1 and 2. 3. Naturalistic observations of eighteen participants with ID were conducted to complement the results of the cross-sectional study. Data was collected using momentary time-sampling and narrative descriptions. / Results: Paid carers reported high levels of person-centred support and choice availability for service-users. No significant associations were found between person-centred support and characteristics of the living environments, however choice availability was significantly higher in supported living compared to residential care homes and in living environments with fewer residents. Carers who reported higher levels of person-centred support experienced less subjective burden in their jobs. There was an association between choice and service-users’ adaptive behaviour. No association was found between person-centred support/choice and global challenging behaviour; stereotyped behaviour however was negatively associated with autonomy and carers’ knowledge of individuals with ID. The findings from the observations showed lower levels of person-centred support than those reported by paid carers, suggesting desirability effects in carers’ responses. Low levels of engagement in meaningful activities, assistance and contact from staff were observed, although there was much variability at the individual level. There were few instances of challenging behaviours and these mostly consisted of stereotyped/repetitive movements which were prevalent in disengaged participants. / Implications: The support for people with ID and challenging behaviour requires improvement but quality evaluation criteria adopted by inspectors and regulators may need to be reconsidered. Improvements in day-to-day support could reduce stereotyped behaviour but input from skilled professionals may be required for other types of challenging behaviour.

Hansson, Daniel. "Nonlinear FEM load bearing capacity of a concrete bridge subjected to support settlements : Case of a continuous slab bridge with angled supports." Thesis, KTH, Bro- och stålbyggnad, 2013. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-142822.

Full text
Abstract:
A nonlinear finite element analysis was performed for an existing road bridge in order to see if that could show a higher load bearing capacity, as an alternative to repairing or replacing. The regular linear analysis had shown that the bridge could not take any traffic load due to the effects from large and uneven support settlements. It is a five-span reinforced concrete bridge with a continuous slab on supports made out of rows of columns. The width-to-span ratio was around 1 and the supports were angled up to about 30°, giving rise to a complex three-dimensional behaviour, which was seen and studied in the nonlinear results. Since the bending moment was the limiting factor, the nonlinear analysis focused on that. The direct result was that the load bearing capacity was 730 kN for the traffic vehicle boogie load, B, in the ultimate limit state. This was however only for the load case tested, and several more disadvantageous vehicle positions may exist. Other aspects also became limiting, as the maximum allowed vertical deflection in the serviceability limit state was reached at 457 kN. The most restraining though, was the shear capacity from the linear analysis; 78 kN, since it was not possible to simulate that type of failure with the shell elements used in the nonlinear finite element analysis. The main aim of the thesis was nonetheless reached, since the nonlinear analysis was able to show a significant increase in load bearing capacity. A comparison was made with the settlements for the nonlinear case, to see how much influence they had on the load bearing capacity for traffic load. This was performed for both the bridge and a simple two-span beam. Both showed that there was no effect on the load bearing capacity in the ultimate limit. One thing to note was that the full settlements were applied, and with no relaxation due to creep. Another aim of the thesis was to make comments on the practical usability of the nonlinear finite element method in load bearing capacity assessments. A linear analysis was performed before the nonlinear in order to be able to determine the load case to be used in the latter. This worked well, as the strengths of the two methods could then be utilized. Convergence problems were however encountered for the nonlinear when using the regular static solver. Due to this, the dynamic explicit calculation scheme was used instead, treating the case as quasi-static. This managed to produce enough usable results. It was concluded that the nonlinear finite element method is useable for assessment calculations, but that its strengths and weaknesses must be known in order to make it an efficient method.

Bueno, Alejandra. "Catalyst supports with hierarchical and radial porosity : preparation, characterization and catalytic evaluation." Thesis, Lyon, 2019. http://www.theses.fr/2019LYSE1249.

Full text
Abstract:
The vast majority of chemical processes are catalytic. Within the heterogeneous catalysis, industrial catalysts are bodies whose size ranges between 1 mm to 1 cm. For most catalysts, the active phase (i.e. metal nanoparticles) is dispersed in a mesoporous support having a high specific surface area. To overcome the problem of internal diffusional limitation, a secondary network of macropores is introduced within the catalyst support. This improves the diffusion of substrates. However, in the case where the catalytic reaction is particularly fast, the diffusion inside the porous support can remain limiting (Thiele modulus), resulting in a loss of catalytic effectiveness. The objective of this thesis is to study the catalytic effectiveness of a new alumina-based support shaped into spherical pellets, owing a radial macroporosity. In order to quantify the impact of this new porous structure, two model catalytic reactions were chosen to test the catalysts: CO oxidation and isooctane cracking. The catalytic activity was compared to reference commercial supports owing hierarchical porosity. For both reactions, the new support with radial porosity increases the activity from 25 to 95% approximately. On the basis of a fine characterization of the porosity of the beads (adsorption N2-77k, porosimetry Hg, X-ray microtomography), the catalytic activities were modeled. We conclude that the impact on the catalytic activity is essentially due to the radial porous design

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In South African schools teachers are currently being expected to make major changes in the way they understand teaching and learning in the process of adapting to an entirely new curriculum like Curriculum 2005 or Outcomes Based Education (Engelbrecht, Green, Naicker & Engelbrecht, 1999:70). Research asked the question about what the needs of teachers are towards support to facilitate the implementation of inclusive education in the Limpopo Province of South Africa. A case study was conducted, the purpose being to inform support programmes for teachers. The target population included a selected primary school, the Mutondo Primary School in the Vuwani Area of the Limpopo Province. Participants included 20 voluntary teachers. A literature review was undertaken on the implementation of inclusive education in South Africa. It indicated that teachers showed negative and positive attitudes towards inclusive education in schools. It also showed that that teachers needed support to facilitate positive change in their attitudes toward inclusion in South Africa. Engelbrecht, Green, Naicker and Engelbrecht (1999:157) also emphasised that support was crucial for teachers as they felt that they did not have enough training in order to meet many challenges they come across. The aims of the study was to identify the need for a support programme towards inclusive education for teachers in the Vuwani Area of the Limpopo Province, to provide information to teachers on the implementation of inclusive education and to evaluate the needs for a support programme on the implementation of inclusive education in this area. Information was gathered at the hand of workshops with focus group interviews. The main themes that emerged from the data was the number of learners in a class, resources, the need for in-service training, a culture of respect and acceptance and a flexible curriculum. Findings suggested that a support programme could implement the policy of inclusive education more effectively when teachers' needs for training and support were being met.

Steward, Sarah Rachelle. "Support Group Design for Parents of Children with Severe Developmental Disabilities." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/85638.

Full text
Abstract:
Parents of children with severe developmental disabilities face a variety of unique circumstances as they raise a child who requires specialized care. Accessing the support of other parents of children with developmental disabilities can be a valuable external resource for managing the stress associated with raising a child with special needs. The literature on support groups for parents of children with disabilities predominantly focuses on evaluating existing support groups rather than designing support groups based on the recommendations of the population that would utilize them. The purpose of this study was to determine the perceived value of support groups and identify recommendations for support group design based on the experiences and feedback of 19 interviews with parents of children with severe or profound developmental disabilities. Despite varied experiences with support groups, most participants indicated the value of support groups is in providing a place where parents can feel understood, share information, and gather information. There was a high degree of variability among parents' recommendations for support group design, with the preferences of some parents being in direct contrast to the preferences of others; the summary recommendations for support group design address a wide range of preferences: a qualified group leader to organize groups that are highly flexible in structure, composed of parents with a high degree of similarity, and that offer a wide variety of content in various formats.

Abstract:
The objective of this study was to examine the impact of emotional support on the longevity of AIDS patients. To accomplish this objective, a group of AIDS patients who received emotional support and a group of AIDS patients who received no support were studied. A random sampling technique was used. The participants consisted of 50 males. In the group that received support there were twenty-five (25) men and in the non-support group there were twenty-five (25) men. The study consisted of viewing the medical files of the fifty (50) men. The researcher examined the number of days patients lived after being diagnosed with AIDS of both groups. To test the difference in time lived between the groups, a t-Test was employed. The result of the t-Test analysis showed t = -.30, d.f = 48, P< .768. With these results, the null hypothesis was accepted. The study did not find any statistically significant difference between the group that had support and those who did not with reference to the length of time lived once being diagnosed with AIDS.

Abstract:

This thesis investigates the possibilities to extend a tactical air combat simulator, named TACSI, with support for team behavior in fight and attack scenarios. A model for describing teamwork has been developed. The model uses plans and primitive team actions to achieve goals. A social structure is used to transfer the responsibility for making decisions from the team to a single agent within the team. Special care have been taken to allow an effctive distribution of targets within the team. In order to test the concepts of the model and to evaluate the applicability in TACSI, a limited implementation of the team behavior model have been made. The results show that the concepts of the model works and that the model is applicable in TACSI, but some things is left to be specified in order to make a complete implementation.

Bjerke, Marius. "Runtime Support for Executable Components with Sessions." Thesis, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Department of Telematics, 2009. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:no:ntnu:diva-9055.

Full text
Abstract:

Reactive systems that provide services to an environment typically interact with numerous users or other components. Session multiplicity enables a component to keep track of these interactions by handling each of them as separate conversations. Session reflection is the ability to look into the state and properties of these conversations at run time, and use that for deciding the actions to be taken when certain events occur. This thesis addresses how to support session multiplicity and reflection during code generation of executable state machines and a runtime support system that can execute them. Using code generation, certain UML composite structures and state machines can be transformed to deployable, executable components automatically. To support these features, an interface for using them is offered to the components that comprise an application and some internal mechanisms have been added to a runtime support system. The interface includes methods for sending messages, creating new sessions and session state machines and retrieving information about run time state machine instances. The internal mechanisms include keeping track of components and sessions, giving intra-component messages priority, creating new session state machine instances and changing the addressing scheme and routing mechanisms to include session state machines. To put the thesis' results into context and to some extent prove that they are good, a proof of concept, multi-player rock-paper-scissors game has been implemented.

Abstract:

CAPTCHAs are widely used to tell humans and computers apart on the Internet, but user experience shows that many of these are inaccessible to users with disabilities. The Norwegian Government has proposed a Plan of Action for Universal Design to raise awareness on the matter of accessibility and this thesis demonstrates how one can achieve the measures specified in this plan when designing a CAPTCHA. By evaluating existing solutions and investigating the aspects of web accessibility and disabilities involved, I propose a requirement specification and my recommendations for future work.

Abstract:
Background. Hyperplane folding was introduced by Lars Lundberg et al. in Hyperplane folding increased the margin while suffering from a flaw, referred to asover-rotation in this thesis. The aim of this thesis is to introduce a new different technique thatwould not over-rotate data points. This novel technique is referred to as RubberBand folding in the thesis. The following research questions are addressed: 1) DoesRubber Band folding increases classification accuracy? 2) Does Rubber Band fold-ing increase the Margin? 3) How does Rubber Band folding effect execution time? Rubber Band folding was implemented and its result was compared toHyperplane folding and the Support-vector machine. This comparison was done byapplying Stratified ten-fold cross-validation on four data sets for research question1 & 2. Four folds were applied for both Hyperplane folding and Rubber Band fold-ing, as more folds can lead to over-fitting. While research question 3 used 15 folds,in order to see trends and is not affected by over-fitting. One BMI data set, wasartificially made for the initial Hyperplane folding paper. Another data set labeled patients with, or without a liver disorder. Another data set predicted if patients havebenign- or malign cancer cells. Finally, a data set predicted if a hepatitis patient isalive within five years.Results.Rubber Band folding achieved a higher classification accuracy when com-pared to Hyperplane folding in all data sets. Rubber Band folding increased theclassification in the BMI data set and cancer data set while the accuracy for Rub-ber Band folding decreased in liver and hepatitis data sets. Hyperplane folding’saccuracy decreased in all data sets. Both Rubber Band folding and Hyperplane folding increases the margin for alldata sets tested. Rubber Band folding achieved a margin higher than Hyperplanefolding’s in the BMI and Liver data sets. Execution time for both the classification ofdata points and the training time for the classifier increases linearly per fold. RubberBand folding has slower growth in classification time when compared to Hyperplanefolding. Rubber Band folding can increase the classification accuracy, in whichexact cases are unknown. It is howevered believed to be when the data is none-linearly seperable.Rubber Band folding increases the margin. When compared to Hyperplane fold-ing, Rubber Band folding can in some cases, achieve a higher increase in marginwhile in some cases Hyperplane folding achieves a higher margin. Both Hyperplane folding and Rubber Band folding increases training time andclassification time linearly. The difference between Hyperplane folding and RubberBand folding in training time was negligible while Rubber bands increase in classifi-cation time was lower. This was attributed to Rubber Band folding rotating fewerpoints after 15 folds.

Abstract:
While today's   police forces are decreasing in number and their resources are limited,   population is at the same time increasing. This means that other types of   efforts and strategies are needed to fight crime. There are different   strategies to do this, one of which is called community policing that   involves proactive cooperation between citizens and the police to deal with   the problems. Traditionally, community policing meant that a local police in   the neighbourhood called for physical meetings, where citizens and police   together raised problems and discussed solutions to these. With today's   limited resources, there is little possibilities for the police to execute   this kind of physical collaboration and meetings. On the other hand, another   meeting place has been added (the one online) and an alternative way to   implement community policing may be online. With digital channels for this   purpose, there may also be an opportunity to reach groups of citizens that   the police have not reached before, but in order to do so, it requires work   and a use of these digital channels in the right way according to community   policing. The purpose of   this paper is to investigate what challenges and requirements that needs to   be taken into consideration when implementing community policing with the   support of digital communication channels. For this purpose, qualitative   research in the form of literature studies and semi-structured interviews   were conducted. Findings show   there are a lot of challenges and requirements to consider and there are   guidelines in the analysis and discussion section, to help begin to implement   this way of working. The practical   implications for this thesis may help police improving their relationships   with citizens in vulnerable areas to be able to cooperate according to   community policing to make these areas a better and safer place to live.

Component-based software development is a topic that has attracted attention in recent years. This technique allows the construction of complex software systems in a quick and structured way. Several component models have been proposed by the industry and the academy. The majority of these component models adopt Remote Procedure Calls as their basic communication mechanism. The CORBA Component Model is the only one from the surveyed models that has a work in progress to support communication over data streams. This support proves to be of great importance in systems that must deal with data from sensors and systems that deal with audio and video transmission. The main goal of this work is to propose an architecture that enables the middleware Software Component System (SCS) to support applications that require data streaming. To this end, the SCS component model was extended to support stream ports. As evaluation, this work presents some experimental results of performance and scalability, as well as an application that exercises the needs of the CSBase s algorithm ow executor, a framework used to build systems for grid computing.
