Abstract:
Abstract Supposition is a controversial logical theory. Scholars have investigated many points of this doctrine such as its historical origin, its use in theology, the logical function of the theory, or the relationship between supposition and signification. In the article I focus on this latter aspect by discussing how some Italian, and in particular Florentine, Dominican followers of Aquinas—Francis of Prato (d. 1348), Girolamo Savonarola (d. 1498), and Georgius Rovegnatinus (d. after 1500)—explained the relation between the linguistic terms’ properties of signifying and suppositing, and hen

The existence of the threshold hydraulic gradient in clays under a low hydraulic gradient has been recognized by many studies. Meanwhile, most nature clays to some extent exist in an overconsolidated state more or less. However, the consolidation theory of overconsolidated clays with the threshold hydraulic gradient has been rarely reported in the literature. In this paper, a one-dimensional large-strain consolidation model of overconsolidated clays with consideration of the threshold hydraulic gradient is developed, and the finite differential method is adopted to obtain solutions for this mo

The concept of „supposition" has already been brought in by the scholastics (suppositio) for describing different relations between objects and names, which refer to these objects. In the XX century, the problem of supposition, understood som ew hat different than by the scholastics, was taken up by A. Meinong. His intention was taking notice of judgment existence, which does not express even the involvement of belief. Such a concept of supposition has been taken up and developed by many Polish philosophers (inter alia W. Witwicki, T. Czeżowski, K. Pasenkiewicz, K. Ajdukiewicz, H. Mehlberg, B.

AbstractThe Tractatus de suppositionibus, which is cited by Gerald Odonis in his commentary on the Sentences, probably dates from ca. 1315-25. In the Sentences commentary he refers to his treatment of 'suppositio communicabilis' and its species, indicating a type of supposition whose language seems new. This article attempts to find a source for it in contemporary authors and arrives at the conclusion that 'communicabilis' is simply a synonym for 'personalis', the most common form of supposition according to Odonis.

Néanmoins, les philosophes ont principalement porté leur attention sur deux types d’imagination : l’imagination sensorielle (l’imagination similaire à la perception) et l’imagination cognitive (l’imagination similaire à la croyance). Abstract It is now possible to reconstruct patient-specific models of arterial geometries, and to use these models to obtain detailed information about in vivo hemodynamics. Several methods can be used to obtain such patient-specific arterial geometries, including in vivo medical imaging, vascular casting and pressure fixation of vessels. Ideally, any of these methods, when applied to a single artery, would yield the same ‘true’ arterial geometry. The objective of this study was to test this supposition.
