Abstract:
This thesis investigates how to maximise spatial information from surgical camera images for robotic navigation. Image enhancement and depth estimation techniques are extended to not only improve the visual navigation capability in robotic surgery, but enable more accurate clinical diagnosis. Targeted applications include bronchoscopy and arthroscopy, with trials using real and synthetic data demonstrating potential for improved clinical outcomes of minimally invasive surgery.

A qualitative approach was used and we let the students of a course at KTH answer questions about that course without having knowledge of this project. No conclusions

Minimally invasive surgery is playing an increasingly important role for patient care. Whilst its direct patient benefit in terms of reduced trauma, improved recovery and shortened hospitalisation has been well established, there is a sustained need for improved training of the existing procedures and the development of new smart instruments to tackle the issue of visualisation, ergonomic control, haptic and tactile feedback. For endoscopic intervention, the small field of view in the presence of a complex anatomy can easily introduce disorientation to the operator as the tortuous access pathw

The overarching purpose of this research is to understand whether Mixed Reality can enhance a surgeon’s manipulations skills during minimally invasive procedures. Minimally-invasive surgery (MIS) utilizes small cuts in the skin - or sometimes natural orifices - to deploy instruments inside a patient’s body, while a live video feed of the surgical site is provided by an endoscopic camera and displayed on a screen. MIS is associated with many benefits: small scars, less pain and shorter hospitalization time as compared to traditional open surgery. However, these benefits come at a cost: because

Abstract:
Abstract Minimally invasive surgery (MIS) techniques have seen rapid growth as methods for improved operational procedures. The main technology of MIS is based on image guided surgery (IGS) devices, namely surgical navigators, surgical robotics and image scanners. With their widespread use in various fields of surgery, methods and tools that may be used routinely in the hospital setting for “real world” assessment of the accuracy of these devices are lacking. In this thesis the concept of accuracy testing was developed to meet the needs of quality assurance of navigators and robots in a hospit

INTRODUCTION: Computer aided navigation is an important tool which has the capability to enhance surgical accuracy, while reducing negative outcomes. However, it is a relatively new technology and has not yet been accepted as the standard of care in all settings. OBJECTIVES: The objective of the present study is to present the development and current state of technologies in computer aided navigation in Orthopedic Spine Surgery, specifically in navigated placement of pedicle screws, to examine the clinical need for navigation, it's effect on surgical accuracy and clinical outcome and to dete

Abstract:
Arthroscopic knee surgery can be challenging because there is no intuitive relationship between the arthroscopic image, shown on a screen above the patient, and the camera in the surgeon's hand. As a result, arthroscopic surgeons require extensive training and experience. This thesis describes a computer system to help improve target acquisition in arthroscopy by visualizing the location and alignment of an arthroscope using augmented virtuality. A 3D computer model of the patient's joint (from CT) is shown, along with a model of the tracked arthroscopic probe and the projection of the ca
