Full textThe Parisian surrealist activity between 1946 and 1969 still remains less studied and less valued than the one of the interwar period. The present work aims at understanding and questionning that devaluation by analyzing the historiographic, artistic and political issues faced by Surrealism at the time. The marginalization of the group in the political sphere due to its rejection of both Western and Eastern politics during the Cold War also manifests itself in the artistic field as Surrealism challenges the formal criteria for art apprehension during a period when the debate between abstraction and figuration dominates the pictoral field. In addition to that, Surrealism is confronted with the first historiographic enterprises which participate in the institutionalization of its past and legacy. The collective approach of Surrealism favoured in this study allows us to analyze the mechanisms whereby the surrealist movement renews and extends its artistic activity, particularly concerning automatism (Simon Hantaï, Adrien Dax), the art of the object (Hervé Télémaque, Konrad Klapheck) and the theorization and practice of a magical art (Jean Benoît, Jorge Camacho). On the political level, a similar collective approach shows that after a period of isolation during the 1950s, surrealist values, benefiting from de-stalinization and anti-colonial conflicts, are acknolegded in intellectual circles. It is then the beginning for the group of a series of collaborations whose difficulties and stakes are analyzed to better understand what may have led to the auto-dissolution of the group a few months after the events of Mai 68

Full textWhat is left to examine about Dada and the Surrealism almost a hundred years after the birth of these movements? Numerous studies have dealt with the subject, yet the reactions of their contemporaries have still to be explored. If Dada’s and the Surrealism’s reception among the public has been touched upon by scholars, it remains an unexplored aspect of these movements. This thesis relies upon the analysis of a hundred and twenty-six titles from the 1920’s French press in order to fill this gap by exploring the reception of Dada and Surrealism. The structure of this thesis has been built upon the themes found in the press articles. The first part shows how Dada and to a lesser extent Surrealism have been perceived as incoherent, absurd and thus unintelligible. By trying to explain the reasons of this Dadaist incoherence, this first part touches upon the notion of hermeticism. Then, the second part analyses Dadaist humour through its mystification and laughter which often turns to be offensive and tragic. By cross-reading the various critical assessments of these two movements, this thesis allows us to put back these avant-guardes in their own historical contexts. It unveils their history which is underlined by the concerns of the 1920’s. in addition, the analysis of their reception enables us to insert these two movements in a cartography of references which goes back to the Antiquity, continues in the Middle Ages, expands in the 19th century and comes to an end in the beginning of the 20th century. Therefore, Dada and Surrealism have been read and evaluated in relation to artistic and literary history, from Romanticism to Futurism, right through Symbolism, Incoherent Arts, Impressionism, post-Impressionism, Cubism and the Humorists

Full textDeriving from Dada and surrealism, the Panic group, made up of Fernando Arrabal, Roland Topor and Alejandro Jodorowsky, was created in 1962. The evolution of Jodorowsky's artistic practice from 1962 to 2016 is rich in teachings on theatrical performance and the interaction between theatre and cinema. We agree with the observation made by Joseph Danan in Entre théâtre et performance: la question du texte that from a "dramaturgical state of mind" evoked by Bernard Dort has succeeded a "performative state of mind" on the contemporary scene. Jodorowsky's work is crossed by this "performative state of mind", from his "panic ephemera" that he realised between 1962 and 1967, to his "panic theatre" and his "essential theatre" and his cinema. The analysis of the ephemera, temporally and essentially close of the first historical performances, makes it possible to highlight the characteristics of the performance which can pass in other artistic forms. Before the presentation of a performance is implicitly a pact between the performers and the spectators. This "performance pact", corresponding to the expectations and beliefs of the performance spectator, is based on three points: the involvement of the artist himself in his work, the uniqueness of the performance and the realization of real acts. With our study we are able to see how these three points, while adapting to the art in which they are brought, constitute the core of the "performative state of mind" that runs through the whole of Jodorowsky's work

Full textBorn in the late sixteenth century, baroque art and literature remains unknown for nearly two hundred years. It is not until the late nineteenth century that it is rediscovered and that the concept of baroque emerges to define it. While French researchers gradually begin to appropriate this object of study during the twentieth century, surrealism rises as a movement and ceaselessly seeks predecessors previously excluded from the history of literature vehiculated in academia. Without defending a transhistorical vision of baroque, this thesis looks at the influence on surrealism of the modern concept of baroque and explores the affinities between baroque and surrealist artists and writers. The study of the reception of baroque allows to first understand what corresponded to the notion of baroque when surrealism was still in its infancy, up until the first half of the thirties. This research goes on to show how the practice of automatism that characterizes the beginnings of surrealism is marked by a purely baroque theatricality, as defined by the first specialists. The baroque and surrealist vision of theater is then analyzed to demonstrate the presence of elements common to baroque and surrealist authors. Finally, the surrealist marvelous is placed in parallel with the baroque meraviglia, through the question of cabinet of curiosities, the surrealist image and the baroque conceit, as well as the process of anamorphosis

Full textThe purpose of this thesis is to define a type of modern visual poetry (20th – 21st), that we called graphic poetry. The graphic poetry focuses on a plastic and visual experimentation of the graphic sign, demonstrates an important conscience of the visual potential of the written form and tries to produce poetry in the materiality of the writing shapes. The graphic poetry refers to a practice of poem which is specifically graphic and includes a painting of the sign as a typographic work of the letter in order to produce the poem. This artistic practice of poetry follows and also renews the poetic and plastic avant-gardes of the 20th century, more particularly surrealism. Christian Dotremont’s logograms, Roland Giguère’s artists’ books (Editions Erta) and prints-poems, Henri Michaux’s anthologies of invented painted signs and Jérôme Peignot’s typoems are some forms of graphic poetry. Our study focuses on francophone works, which come from Belgian, French and Quebec fields, published between 1950 and 2004. Three characteristics mainly define the graphic poetry : the ambiguity and the nomadism of the sign in relation to the semiotic systems (graphic, iconic and plastic), graphics rhythm and lyricism, as modalities of the expression of the subject in the graphic material, and a questioning of the distinction between autographic arts and allographic arts, requiring new ways of perception and reading of the poem and the book, that we called visual-reading and touch-reading

Full textConsidering the relationship between Psychoanalysis and Surrealism, we verify that the surrealistic movement was strongly marked by Freud's thinking. Through the experience of automatic writing, Breton makes a link between the unconscious and the automatic functioning of the language. Thus, the surrealism enunciates what is to be Lacan's way of thinking the Freudian unconscious. In the 50s, Lacan supports this same link, relying on the notion of structure, which drives him away from the surrealistic project. The dream and the paranoia appear as the two fundamental phenomena in order to understand the most fertile moments in the history of the relationships between Psychoanalysis and Surrealism. We have relied ourselves on them to develop the discussion of the three notions that constitute the object of this research : the reality, the real and the surreal

Full textThe study of MS’s multivocal work is carried out through an on-site investigation of his workshop. The place, which reflects his philosophy, is full of materials, images, objects, and books. It bears testimony to his numerous activities. Indeed writing a monograph of the artist amounts to performing archeological fieldwork and excavation in his studio. Schoendorff studied classical literature, was well-versed on the subject of German culture, and enjoyed transgressing boundaries. As early as 1950, he was labelled as a committed artist together with RP and a small group of intellectuals and creators/designers from Lyon. Heconsidered himself as the initiator of cultural decentralization. He later devoted himself to painting and managed to create his own artistic language based on the surrealist imaginary world, Max Ernst’s production, and the metamorphic alteration of predominantly organic matter. His personal conception of art is expressed in his protean works which include paintings, engravings, books, and spectatorial scenography. A socio-political libertarian and utopian, he founded the MAPRA (Maison des arts plastiques Rhône-Alpes), the R-A Fine Arts Agency and the URDLA, the International Book and Lithography Centre (Centreinternational estampe et livre) in Villeurbanne

Full textS’appuyant sur un certain nombre d’affirmations émanant des acteurs de Cobra comme des historiens ayant écrit sur le sujet, l’auteur s’est penché sur la question de la violence picturale et théorique au sein de ce mouvement. Picturale, par la propension des artistes à brouiller la lisibilité de la composition et des figures, par leur volonté de « faire brut » et enfantin, de « mal peindre », de maltraiter le sujet en le rendant méconnaissable, hybride, défiguré. Théorique, par un certain nombre de déclarations (pour la plupart, parues dans la revue Cobra) véhémentes, engagées, politiques, relatives au climat sociopolitique de l’après-guerre comme au contexte artistique et culturel contemporain.
Au cours des recherches, il est apparu que la violence de Cobra était plus ambiguë que ce qui avait été imaginé initialement. Elle relève en réalité d’une forme d’instrumentalisation émanant des acteurs, qui ont multiplié les effets rhétoriques, les attitudes et les déclarations allant dans ce sens, conduisant Cobra à user d’une violence « décorative » nettement instrumentée :un outil utilisé par les artistes dans la construction de leur image, de leur identité individuelle et collective. Cette piste a ainsi débouché vers d’autres résultats que ceux imaginés au préalable mais n’en a pas moins permis de réévaluer le mouvement sur le plan de l’histoire des représentations, en étudiant les stratégies développées par ses membres dans les œuvres et les discours. La mise en perspective critique de ceux-ci a permis de cerner la capacité rhétorique de certains membres de Cobra, qui ont valorisé l’image d’un mouvement artistique résolument « moderne », c’est-à-dire violent et revendicateur, tout en puisant leur inspiration dans certaines formes d’art primitives et brutes.
La thèse s’articule de façon thématique, autour de quatre pôles révélateurs des formes et du sens de la violence détectée dans les œuvres et les discours des Cobra :

Full textDuring the first half of the 20th century, several European avant-garde movements were introduced in Japan, where they grew within a short period of time, sometimes intermingling, which was quite inconceivable from an Occidental perspective. This characteristic was obvious in the case of Japanese surrealism, a synthetic cultural object. During the 1930s, the increasing pressure on artists and intellectuals gave it an even more singular dimension. Like many Japanese painters, Kitawaki Noboru (1901-1951) was interested in surrealism, but he quickly moved away from the Western model to begin a singular artistic exploration through his "Schematic Paintings", with which he aimed to construct a model of reality that appeared less and less ordered in a time of trouble and which consequently could no longer be understood. In this way he aimed to give back to man the place that should be his. Kitawaki’s attempts to draw inspiration from the most diverse fields, without any real temporal, geographical or disciplinary limitations, evoke the work of Renaissance polymath artists. His production, while inseparable from the context, cannot be perceived only in relation to historical events. The in-depth analysis of several of his writings and works, as well as the theoretical and practical schemas he developed (notably the question of the pictorial void) provide information on the painter's aim, which—in contrast to standards—was as much concerned with the background as it was with the motifs of his canvases, and which was more concerned with the manner in which elements were combined than with the elements themselves

Parallel to this, the very visual, camal nature of her words provides a « mirror of desire » which enables the intimate echoing between her poetry and the works of her artist friends. Through their collaborations, they sublimate, enhance, comment on and illustrate each other. Each in their own way, they share the same anguish. commit the same transgressions, exercise the sa me freedom. Art and poetry connect deeply. This thesis aims to follow the symbiosis between images, words and experiences which characterises Joyce Mansours work. It reveals itself in the collection of Oceanic art she built up with her husbanc, Samir Mansour ; in the Objets méchants she created using material gleaned from scrapyards or bought at the BHV ... which express a need to intensify daily life, seek its essence in order to escape tedium ; in the elective affinities she shares with with the artists that enrich her works, as she does theirs. This « mirror of desire» is both personal - an expression of the poetess' s destiny, haunted by death and its traumas - and collective, as it seems to reflect the phantasmagorical landscape of a generation hungry for freedom, but haunted, like Joyce Mansour, by the mass graves of successive wars, and in rebellion against the non-life of the living

Full textThis thesis explores the relationship between Michel Butor's writing and the visual arts. Butor is well known for his role in the "Nouveau roman", but his very personal contribution to art criticism together with his poetic approach to artistic creation have received scant attention. The structure of this thesis is tripartite. The first deals with "sources of influence". It analyses Butor's biography, pinning down the notion of art critic and examining his links with the writings on art of Diderot, Baudelaire, Claudel, Breton and Sartre. The second part, entitled "A critical shift", analyses texts of criticism or art history dealing with well-known artists, be they classical, modern or contemporary. It reveals the importance of Butor's approach in this domain and opens out into the notion of dialogue in the broad sense of the term. The third part, entitled "After criticism or transposition" examines the poetic transposition which takes over from art criticism. Texts undergo a rearrangement of their original writing to become encompassed in larger entities, ushering in a new approach to art criticism. This study thereby traces a development in Michel Butor's attitude to artists and their work, mirrored by a shift in his own writing moving from pure art criticism to a poetic transposition

Full textMy purpose is to shed some new light on the links between surrealist poet Joyce Mansours world and other writers of her generarion in terms of content and form. It’s also to pick out sketches and itinireraies in the way the writing takes form, to find out similar principles and different expressions resulting from each writer’s singularity. These processes are referend to surrealism as esthetic and ethic movement, a dialectic thinking that rejects the separation between the real from the imagimary, and poetry from politics. Two perspectives help to clarify the field and make all kinds of questionnig fly out. The writing, first, how defines a critical and esthetic attitude from the litterary theory, in terms of silence,“ indicidble” and cry. Secondly, a feminine approch that takes into count the specifity of creative womens experience. Here the surrealism offers both a specific and paradoxal field, where it’s structures appear in the most varied forms. We are there fore going to raise questions about some referents and see the ways they are outwitted by that writer

The semantic, poetic (generic questions) and pragmatic (integrated pragmatic) achievements are successively examined. The examination provides a fingerpost to their entanglement. History of art thug considered in a monographic and semiotic approach takes sides with micro-history. It makes it possible to draw out morphologic features which, put in perspective (modernity, Western tradition, etc. ), bring to light a non-uniform history. It leads up an archaeology of art whose matter is the modality of Belief, rather than of Power

Full textThis PhD thesis questions the label « Ecole romaine » (also known as Scuola romana) used to designate a group of painters and sculptors in Rome between 1918 and 1945. We aim to understand the reasons for the success of this expression until now. We use various methods in order to investigate the discourses of both art critics and scholars as well as more fictional texts, often written as testimonies. Furthermore, this work analyses the singular career of each artist and the reception of their works in order to consider the Ecole Romaine within a history of taste in Italy and abroad. Our study follows a chronological development. First, we analyse the reception of the School when active, between 1918 and 1945. Then, we examine the place of our artists in post-war Italy, in a context of great political divisions. Finally, we study how, in the early 1980s, various actors on the artistic scene tried to raise the value of the Ecole Romaine's works on the art market. What were the results of their attempt, and to what extent this renewal of interest had a lasting impact, especially in the museums field ? The questions of artistic modernity and of the relationship between the Ecole Romaine and the fascist regime are central in this research. These constitute new approaches to a theme which has remained relatively unknown outside of Italy

Full textIt is a question at first of analyzing the essential character of the translation, understood by Benjamin as messianic rewriting and origin of the language. The translation is "survival" of the works and "the life" of the languages. The language is, from this point of view, the foundation of the biblical revelation. The politico-historic despair of Benjamin leads this one in 1921, in his Criticism of the violence, to elaborate an apocalyptic and nihilistic conception of the messianic, but it seems that messianic as writing (that the thesis tries to show), belongs to one the other stratum of the texts than that of the 1921. The question of Trauerspiel (" baroque drama ") constitutes the heart and the bend of its thesis: distinguished from the tragic, this one serves, from 1925, as machine of war against the Christian theology and constitutes the involvement of the history in the writing. The thesis tries to show how, from 1916 till 1940, by way of the bend of Trauerspiel, Benjamin passes of a philosophy opened of the language to a secret philosophy of the writing which raises the problem of the outcome in and of the history. The distinction of the messianic (as expectation without achievement of a messiah), and the messianism, structures all the benjaminienne thought of the history, and as this distinction serves for conceiving what is, in the history, of another order than the history

Some dealers, critics and curators join in and intend to de-hierarchize the art world. Among them : Germano Celant, Lucy Lippard, Carla Lonzi and Seth Siegelaub, along with Kynaston McShine and Harald Szeemann. What is at stake in their practices does not have to do with denying the art system, neither defining new functions for the middle-men, but is about occupying a position which would no longer be authoritarian. To do so, they relate their research to the document, considered as an operating mode involving trading, editing and methods. This operating mode is interrelated to art works and artists’ texts in a context of conceptual and post-minimal art. The ones who are part of this study develop their practices as an informational system, which suppose a close cooperation with the artists in order to restore their control on the circulation of their own works, along with their authority on the discourses about them. Nevertheless, the art criticism declination of this informational system does not suppose the absence of discourses from the art critics. In the cases of Germano Celant and Lucy Lippard, criticism is stable, even though they intend to delegate interpretation to the audience. Concomitantly, the informational system has to face the difficulty of articulating the defense of a self-referential art with political ambitions enlarged to society. The book's title itself is symptomatic : Breton did not write about the surrealist painting but about surrealism and painting. He associated different painters who shared a vision close to the surrealist poetic. He never specified how this vision is expressed on art. What is the element that makes a work of art a surrealist work of art ? Focusing on the concept of "absolute automatism", introduced in the 1939, these doctoral studies wish to clarify how the Breton's theory of automatism and the Matta's theory of "Morphological psychologies" are intertwined and led to the surrealist painting of : "lnners worlds" which resulted into the American abstract expressionism. Endre Rozsda is a part of the artistes who had choice this way. On "Surrealism and painting" his name is associate with painters like : Dominguez, Matta, Paalen. The Hungarian artist joined the movernent in the 1957. His work bridged the deep-rooted imaginary world of Hungary and the surrealism. Focusing on the historical context, this thesis wishes to highlight the importance of the Rozsda's art in the Hungarian as well as in the European culture. In addition it investigates on a relationship between Breton and the artists of the European School and it is analyzed, by inedited documentations, the lack of an official surrealist movement in Budapest. Thus, the process which is at first relentless and inexorable always reserves a share of surprises. By phasing, one is slighty lost. The resulting patterns show the virtuality of the reichienne music. And what is there to think of Reich's attraction and repulsion as regards electronics. An essential feature of the creation of Reich since 1976 is the concept of chord cycles:: those exposed from the very start are supposed to return in the same order. Very often, the works resulting from this process turn out to be mazes. The connection with the text evolved with the composer. In the first pieces, the meaning is atomised. Then, there is an evolution towards a semantisation which leads to ethical works after 1990. For example, Three Tales (2002) is a work of reflexion on the dangers of technology in the twentieth century. But it is also a post-modern work and one knows how much this concept is questionable

Full textFrancis Ponge (1899-1988) wrote between 1946 and 1982 nine texts on Georges Braque (1882-1963). Standing up for this artist gave Ponge the opportunity to sharpen his means of expression and to question his own approach as a writer, participating feeding and informing his conception of poetry as his practice of writing. On the fringe of all generic determinations, these writings allow to deal with the specificity of a discourse on art characterised by a lack of separation between the artist and his work and by paying more attention to the painter than to the painting and the description of works. Ponge questions the function of the artist in society and its insertion in history. Braque is also for him a « maître de vie », the bearer of values relating to morality and ethics, that the two works share in many points. With his own language, Ponge proceeds, as Braque in his own artistic practice, by successive attempts, repetitions and variations. He shows the path of the work as it advances, the process of manufacture. So, this study suggests less to seek a correspondence between the two works than to open to the places where they converge by comparing the practices of a painter and a poet. From the one to the other, there aren’t questions of influence or subordination. It is not so much a question of mutual practice than a question of reciprocity in practices, when Ponge and Braque have, a same motion in the pursuit of artistic and reflective activity, a same relationship linking their practice and reflection

However the artist refuses any kind of theory about his work, prefering the langage of the painting. He was recognized very early in france and in spain and art dealers promote his work. In the 60's clave is often classifled as a belonging to the "ecole de paris" a definition that is purely formal. The artis always kept in close touch with his fellow country-men and has participated in many collective exhibitions. Although deeply influenced by a very specific spanish culture, his art transcendes regionalism to attain an international dimension thanks to the confluence between french and spanish culture

Full textThe purpose of this study is to call into question the concept of minimalism in popular electronic music. The first part of the dissertation focuses on the concept of minimalism itself by mentioning the genesis of this aesthetic, which appeared in plastic arts in the 1950 in the United States, then its translation in the music field under the aegis of composers such as La Monte Young, Terry Riley and Steve Reich. To justify the use of the concept of minimalism while referring to different musical genres, a clarification is made in several steps: the relation of the musicians to History, their economic positioning, the technical means at their disposal as well as their reflection on their work, their social context, their relation to interpretation and live performance, and their views on problematics like repetition and dance. The second part focuses on techno itself. After tracing the history of the emergence of this musical genre at the beginning of the 1980’s in Detroit, as well as an outline of the electronic instruments which played a part in this emergence and their structural effects on the music, we can study the emersion of the « minimal » branch of techno. Lastly, studying the music of German composer Robert Henke allows us to broaden our subject by including an example of minimalism in popular electronic non-dance music

Full textIn 1955, Edward Steichen organized the historic exhibition "The Family of Man" at the Museum of Modem Art (MoMA) in New York. Under the auspices of United States Information Agency, it was exhibited throughout the world and gained a mythic status. This dissertation looks beyond that myth, in order to present a reference document with background information not previously examined. It is based on the author's research involving personal interviews with photographers who contributed to the exhibition as well as the analysis of unpublished archival documents. Part 1 explores the MoMA's World War II programs that paved the way for "The Family of Man", Steichen's career and his role as director of the museum's photography department. Part II traces the origins of the project, showing Steichen's various collaborations through a thorough examination of his correspondence, his individual and group meetings with photographers, and, in particular, his decisive trip across Europe. Part III examines the methods and results of Steichen's work, as both photographer and editor. A discussion of the sources of "The Family of Man", mainly photojournalistic, illustrates the contours of press photography at the time followed by a synopsis of the exhibition and its international circulation, in several versions. This dissertation demonstrates how "The Family of Man" was a tour de force in the history of photography because of Steichen's ability to combine his innovative photographic and editing skills that exploited the medium to communicate a political agenda that is a reflection of a complex network of colleagues, friends and acquaintances from the world of photography and of politics

Full textAlain Jouffroy (1928-2015) started writing poetry in 1948 when encouraged by his encounter with André Breton and his short-termed adherence to the surrealist movement. As he soon found himself excluded from the latter, he experienced and developed mistrust in cliquishness whatsoever and absolute trust in language and its ability to express the innumerable ways a free man can be in the world. It did not take him long to diversify his writing practice, and so he published collections of poems, essays and many critical articles on avant-gardist artists. Like a Jack-of-all-trades, Jouffroy wrote his way through the aesthetic and political movements of the Parisian intellectual sphere, from the fifties to the nineties. As the founder member of the Opus international journal and the director of the XXe siècle one, he was well positioned to insatiably observe the stir of the French society, that is, the restructuration following the Liberation, the disappointed revolutionary hopes of May 68 and the galloping commodification of artistic creation. Bearing witness to the unstoppable rise of the spectacle society, he supported artists who had difficulties in finding their own places – at least at the beginning of their careers: Poster Artists, Objectors, New Realists… – as well as overshadowed poets such as Stanislas Rodanski and Jean-Pierre Duprey. He was interested in all those who, like himself, had appropriated the margins. At the same time, he would converse with major figures like Aragon, Michaux and Sollers. His curiosity for the elsewhere and his numerous travels made his viewpoint more accurate. He promoted the Surrealist painters from both South America and Eastern Europe, and the Beat poets as well as those from the Middle East. At the same time, depending on either his breaking or being reconciled with André Breton, he claimed to be the heir of the latter or the champion of a Surrealism that was still alive and kicking thanks to its been thought of as an ethics of receptivity. When he was the cultural counsellor for the French Embassy in Tokyo, from 1982 to 1985, he perfected his knowledge of Zen Buddhism and experienced a painful linguistic estrangement. Back to France in a grim climate when the media claimed the death of poetry, he made small-sized sculptures from objects he had come across with, which he termed ‘assemblages,’ ‘collages’ or ‘posages’ – a way to possibly answer the silence that surrounded his own artistic creation, badly circulated until the publication of the anthologies entitled C’est aujourd’hui toujours and C’est partout ici, and his collection of poems Vies in the late nineties. His poetic work, far from being a place of withdrawal from his cultural, social and sentimental life, particularly rich and eventful, condenses his trajectory: the twenty or so collections published between 1958 and 2007 offer an echo chamber to his crossing of the half-century, while presenting the variegated positions and poetics born from circumstances and renewed confrontations between two complex entities, that of Alain Jouffroy the man and that of the world around him. This is why his poetic writing reflects all the different currents and trends emerging from the still-unresolved question of the relation between the writing consciousness and the written text. All his work presents us with polymorphous poetry, that is, at the same time including the original pervasiveness of pictures inherited from Surrealism, the return to love lyricism under the influence of biographical material, the angry voices inspired from the tormented Beat souls, the detour via the screen picture in the New Wave period, the temporary vanishing of the subject required to disappear in the Structuralist era and the return of this same subject continuously remaining the object of poems. In spite of formal variations and thundering contradictions, the “I” does remain the motive of writing. .

Moving away from academism and imitation, they explore the unconscious, open by a psychanalytic Freudian field in order to express hidden thoughts of their consciousness. The result of their experimentations and of their semantic games allow leeway for absurd representations where objects and their definitions do not coincide anymore. It is from this dissociation between the idea of the object and its representation that comic and tragic dimensions are born, from the real and the unreal. Surrealism transcends and transgresses alternatively the norms commonly adopted by society. It is from this subversion that new images appear. Surrealistic poetry reveals an interior reality that is created by the imagination and by an exterior reality shaped by unconscious thoughts. Thus an imbalance arises and semiotic hints allow one to discover the real nature of each representation. Sometimes burlesque sometimes sublime, the representation of life and death takes on a significance still unknown by the grand public. By entering the maze of the psychanalytic analysis, the surrealists created a pathway and emancipated themselves from previous artistic movements

Young white misfits thus protested against the profit-seekers still under the threat of a nuclear holocaust. Trying to consider the face value of objects, not thoughts. Led by the simplistic lyrics of pop songs they came to think of the making of their own lives as happenings. The myth of a classless society, enhanced by the media in control of the establishment, easily withstood the criticisms of yelling pop singers, the underground press and the drug-addicted hippies. The first part sets out the historical, social and cultural context of the Cuban Revolution, and defines notions such as adaptation, identity, nation and nationalism. The study is then organized into three parts, dealing with the representations of Cuba in movies and literature in the pre-revolutionary context (I), after the Revolution (II) and in contemporary times (III). We tackle aesthetic issues (the movie-literature relationships), as well as ideological ones (the connection between art and State) ; we also wonder about the part played by the artist in the construction of collective representations. Full textWhat knowledge did André Breton have about psychoanalysis in order to consider it the “muse of surrealism”? What were the crucial elements of this movement established by Breton himself that allowed him to forge a method for exploring the unconscious - a complementary and even superior method to psychoanalysis, the novelty scientific discipline born in the first decades of the 20th century? This project explores what place and status the artist could assume from scientific point of view, accepting the premise that the artist has been refused, for a very long time, the possibility to inquire into the nature and functioning of human psyche, and thus to offer answers to existential questions. The latter sums up the essence of the surrealist project and efforts - a bid for the reinstitution of imagination and poetry to a place that has been illegitimately overtaken by reason.Even if Freud seemingly agrees that artists possess certain precious qualities able to inspire explorers of psychoanalysis, and if imagination admittedly occupies an important place in his subjects’ psyche (two major facts that attract the young André Breton), the Viennese psychiatrist has always been faithful to the rationalist and positivist thought which dominates his century. Reason should be able to triumph over dream, fantasy and all that is imaginary in order to construct an identical reality accessible to all, according to the universal principle. In this perspective, there could be no dialogue or even any understanding between Freud and Breton, a discord which, ultimately, would not discourage the impetuous desire and willingness of the surrealist poet to establish a bridge between the imaginary and the reality by the means of what Freud would call “the unconscious”. What is more, to understand the points of convergence and divergence between the Freudian and the Bretonian thought which would allow for the full comprehension of the richness and depth of the surrealist theory, it is useful to highlight other influences on Breton’s perception and understanding of psychoanalysis. Influences such as the associationism of Taine bearing the mark of Condillac’s sensualism, or even Nerval’s symbolism and mythology, served as the basis for the fundamental notion which permeated the framework of the surrealist thought: the desire. Looking at the concept of desire would best allow to measure the rift between surrealism and psychoanalysis, or at least to measure a certain philosophy of desire akin to both freudism and surrealism. It is therefore this conceptual point, desire, which would allow these two artistic and scientific disciplines to acknowledge the distance between them, a distance spanning from intimate to abysmal, separating the artist and the scientist in the way they define (ethos), live (pathos) and express (logos) desire

Full textThe first section of "oeuvres romanesques croisees" offers an autonomous corpus of late prefaces. The Aragon of the sixties introduces his former novels - from surrealism to "la semaine sainte". But the notion of fiction focuses on the functions the preface discourse fails to fulfil, the refusal to situate the works in their contexts, recount a process or a project contemporary with the realistic cycle and more generally guide the reader the thesis falls into two parts. In the first one the strategies to avoid referential history, the former writer's look and novel signifiance are studied trough the prefaces to or around "le monde reel". In the second one tensions withing preface discourse are analysed trouh two prefaces which elude a defense system elsewhere prevailling and replace to both critics and readers by comments on the genesis. Aethetic, political, ideo logical stakes are thus studied within the frame work of an approach which aims at delimiting the specificity of the crossed prefaces in comparison with other aragonian comments either anterior or posterior. The crossed prefaces offer a gap system, based on indirection, transfer, substitution and paralipsis, which does not challenge autobiographical and historical narratives only; trough the indexes, established from the prefaces, silences, the preface writer's great reserve. .

However only a negligible part of his writings was published as well in Germany as in France and in the United States where he resided successively. The objective of this research is to show the coherence of his work at first sight eclectic, exploring fields as different as traditional painting but also the cubism, the Greek architecture, medieval architecture or constructivist, then the cave paintings and archaic art in the last years of his life. Overcoming cleavage between idealism and materialism, having conceived an empirical method of analysis of the works of art, Raphael works out this idiom which is peculiar to him where crystallize the fundamental concepts allowing, according to him, to realize of the emergence of the form in the matter and within the process of artistic creation. However deeply rooted in the German idealistic tradition, his work comes within the context of a resolutely innovative step, between hermeneutics and iconology, and prefigures in many ways the modern esthetics

Full textMany plastic works were born from a theory and practice influenced by political and social issues. Apart from differences in the methods used, they are united by a spirit of rebellion and contestation. We examined the relationship between art and popular culture, street art and socio-critical phenomenon of this period. Our hypothesis is that this relationship can be defined by the concept of street art, understood as an artistic practice whose connotations are both aesthetic and social a critique and order. It is on the basis of this hypothesis that we questioned the social content / critique of street art and its relationship with the socio-critical sphere which is a representation of the contemporary era. Our first intention was to show, through the graffiti testimony that the modern artists discovered the artistic value of graffiti and some anonymous registrant walls with intellectual expression. Then, this part concerns the prospect of popular culture, critical look at the age and plastics criteria that have had an influence on the street artists in France. Finally, the third and fourth parts deepen the street art movement that became the graffiti art in the history of contemporary art. We study the quarrels offered by the social function of works of art, the ethical problem of the artist's work social function, role, and real artistic value in the industrial culture and commercial art, unrolling a panorama of street artists activities. The two axes of “the artistic value” and “rebellious act”, dealing with contemporary art and its relationship with its critical vision of modernity, those are the foundation of the street art movement, which activist and rebel practice, as an art, and a critical approach towards the art world or our society are essential to its survival as it is. This subject will therefore give us the opportunity to question the true art in our society, a consumer society. Any image that is concerned with the meaning of the pictorial discourse is contentious and feeds on cultural and political antagonisms

Full textThis thesis, at the crossroads of literature and linguistics, intends to study the beginning of fifty English and American great novels selected over three centuries for their enunciative richness. In order to put into evidence the triangular correlation between the narrator-author, the text and the reader, two main functions sustained our study: the poetic function (part one) and the seductive function (part two). Three literary techniques; opening the novel, presenting the plot and the characters putting the plot into action, conveyed the narrative tension within the initial, middle, and final phases of an opening and put into evidence the emergence of rhetorics for each century. Three grammatical markers known for showing this author's subjectivity in his literary creation were selected: pinpointing operators such as demonstratives and determiners, comparative structures and modal auxiliaries. Each marker has been categorized according to specific aspects of fictive openings associated with binary linguistic explorative tools. Therefore, we have considered the anaphoric and cataphoric references conveyed by pinpointing operators related to the characters, the place and the plot introduced at the beginning. As for comparative structures, we have organized them according to three standards: the extra-linguistic universal standard identified by both writer and reader, universal references that need to be proven by the rest of the plot and finally the references that cannot be identified by the reader because they depend on the fictive context. Most of the few studies on it just find there some “poetic” elements without any hard proof, and the others, trying to approach it from its commercial and journalistic aspect, often result in a misunderstanding because of their insufficiency of historical investigation. The purpose of this inquiry is so to show precisely what La Dernière Mode was in reality, both as a magazine and as a Mallarmé's literary work. Our Part 1 presents the historical background by investigating the history of fashion and fashion magazine, as well as the intellectual climate created around fashion by some writers and art critics, from Balzac to Charles Blanc. The Part 2 is devoted to a pre-history and to a history of La Dernière Mode as well as to a comparison between La Dernière Mode and about thirty fashion magazines of those days. The Part 3 takes up at last the writing of Mallarmé in the magazine. O’Neill began his career as founder of the Surrealist Movement of Lisbonin 1947, an artistic and literary movement created thirty years after the French school, in opposition to theSalazar dictatorship. In 1951, with the publication of Tempo de Fantasmas, his first collection of poems,O’Neill radically detaches himself from the movement and creates an original form of poetry. Yet the criticswill, for a long time, consider him a surrealist poet. His project to transform reality is characterised by a singular approach to daily life. The transformation of reality through bursts of language, the transgression ofofficial discourse as an attack towards the political system and the morals of Portuguese society, the humorous attack against his country’s entire literature canon: O’Neill uses elements of surrealist writing and directs it towards a specific transgression. He refuses to limit language to an ordinary usage; his exploitation of everydayness, along with his observation of people, of their identity and of social matters, forge a singular poetical material with an emancipatory horizon: it is necessary to reach possibilities of building a different reality through poetry. As a liberator and a catalyst of thought, he shows, through his poetry, other ways in which the use of language is possible. This language is capable of transforming the world: by challenging the normative system of the normative system of representing reality, O’Neill creates the poetics of humans

Full textThe subject of this study is the analysis of comtemporary art using several photographic and autobiographic concepts. These concepts have served as the bases for my theoretical and plastic formulation of the problem and have allowed me to grasp the dominant ideas and characteristic experiences of contemporary art. Contemporary art is greatly influenced by the pervasive presence of photography as of means of representation. Photography is present not only in the obvious case of photographic realism, but also as a documentary source. Moreover, contemporary artists make use of the logic of photography as an artistic tool. We find it both in the form of their works and in the processes they use to produce them. Another important phenomenon in contemporary art is the interest in the self. Many artists construct their own reference points and recount their life through their works. My objective was to determine how, today, the life of the artist and his or her works overlap in a new way. The thesis is composed of three main parts : part 1 consists of a retrospective analysis of my work as a plastic artist in which the systematic presence of photographic and autobiographic concepts (chapters 1 and 2) is observed ; part 2 is a broader study of these concepts in relation to several contemporary artists (chapters 3, 4, 5 and 6) ; part 3 deals with my work after 1987 (chapter 7)
