Bott, Cynthia L. "A survey-based study of social workers' critical consciousness and practice with LGB clients." Thesis, State University of New York at Albany, 2013. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3563554.
Full textSocial workers are responsible for providing the majority of mental health and substance abuse services in the United States in the role of direct service. Lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LBG) individuals utilize these services at rates that are believed to be higher than other populations. The field of social work embraces social justice as one of its core principles. This cross-sectional survey of 220 BSW and/or MSW social workers investigates two questions: what is the relationship among key aspects of social worker critical consciousness, i.e., attitudes about social justice, change agency, and awareness of heterosexism; and in what ways does critical consciousness influence practice (promising practices) with LGB clients in behavioral health programs. Findings suggest that social workers who have greater critical consciousness have greater self-reported skills and knowledge scores and engage in more LGB promising practices. Specifically, respondents with more consciousness as evidenced by awareness of heterosexism, positive attitudes towards LGB persons, and greater engagement in social justice activity in their personal and professional lives, including their encouragement of client engagement in social justice activity, have higher skills and knowledge scores and utilize more LGB promising practices. Implications for social work practice and education are discussed and areas for future research are presented.

Full textLong-time institutional and socioeconomic segmentations make rural China become a distinctive society from the urban China. The remarkable rural and urban division in China supplies us a good context to explore the formation and diverse social facets of environmental consciousness. This study aims to clarify the specific structure and formation mechanism of environmental consciousness under the different social backgrounds of rural and urban China based on the statistical results derived from survey data. Three dimensions of environmental consciousness and an integrated theoretical framework which involves both social structural and social psychological variables are proposed. Based on the proposed theoretical framework and examined data analyses, the inner causes and externally influencing factors of environmental consciousness were clarified.

Full textThe understanding and practice of leadership in Sub-Saharan Africa, in all spheres, is at the heart beat of this work. Questions and concerns over the quality of leadership in most countries in this particular region are reasons which have led to revisit and investigate the formative training of the current cohort of African leadership with a special focus on the ethical aspect of leadership. It is an assumption, in this thesis, that the contemporary cohort of African leadership received their formative training especially in the 1960s and 1970s and that they were deeply influenced by the black consciousness movement and, in association with that, by the emergence of black theology. In this respect, this research project explores the notions of ethics and leadership with a view to determine ways in which an appropriate leadership ethos was portrayed and articulated in the writings of selected exponents of the black theology movement, namely ML King (Jr), Desmond Tutu and Allan Boesak. The purpose of this work is therefore mainly descriptive: to map discourse on a leadership ethos in the context especially of black theology.

Full textAfter regular discussions about whether authentication with static passwords is a good approach, an idea emerged to investigate how people handle their authentication credentials. This report tackles the task of mapping weaknesses associated with authentication regarding the method, as well as human security awareness and risk taking. During the study, a survey was conducted in which 100 people completely responded, all with varying age and employment. We asked how they value, create, and manage their passwords. The respondents were also tasked to take a position on a number of allegations, regarding their security awareness and risk-taking in connection with authentication. The result of the study shows that the majority reuse passwords to a very high extent. It also appears that a large majority uses memorization as the maintechnique for password management. The result also shows that respondents to a great extent think the complexity of the password is more important than its length. In addition, only 22% of respondents felt unsafe with a password that is 8 characters long, which is a low percentage since 8 characters are too weak today.Though the subject is complex, a combination of length and complexity is desirable to create a strong password. In addition to that the passwords must be unique to each service. Using memorization as its main method is unfortunately not applicable in these cases. A better strategy is to use, for example, a password manager or to generate a memorandum chant. For example, take the first letter of each word in one sentence, My cat is called Glenn he has 3 legs White nose & Redlink which can result in McicGhh3lWn&Rl. A good start to improve one’s password management is to firstly evaluate authentication credentials as valuable, read upon the subject, and then develop a strategy that is appropriate to one’s needs.

Full textThe purpose of this qualitative research study was to answer the following questions: What is the life pattern manifested by individuals caring for spouses who have had coronary artery bypass surgery? What are the thematic expressions of life patterns among individuals caring for spouses who have had coronary artery bypass surgery? The theoretical framework guiding this study was Margaret Newman’s Health as Expanding Consciousness. The research method created by Newman facilitated the understanding of the individual participant’s experience, pattern identification, similarities in pattern across participants and the potential for expansion of consciousness. The study sample included ten women and two men whose spouses were recovering at home following cardiac surgery. These twelve spousal caregivers shared their life stories and their spousal caregiving experience in the first two weeks at home following their spouses discharge from the hospital. There were various levels of potential for expansion of consciousness for these spousal caregivers. Looking across participants six themes emerged from the data. First, disruption in the spousal caregivers’ roles and responsibilities impacts the relationship between the spousal caregivers and their spouses and shifts life patterns. Second, spousal caregivers face coping challenges with changes in lifestyle and response to illness. Third, Spousal caregivers experience vigilance in an effort to ease the uncertainty of the recovery process. Fourth, knowledge helps spousal caregivers gain a sense control in the face of uncertainty. Fifth, mutuality within the partnership of nurse and the spousal caregiver relationship impacts the potential for transformation. Sixth, Spousal caregivers’ awareness of their life pattern gives meaning and offers the caregivers a new perception on life they have left to live. Findings from this study have important implications for nursing theory, practice, research, education and health care policy. The study adds empirical support to Newman’s Theory of Health as Expanding Consciousness and provides a new way to examine spousal caregiving and the nurse-client relationship

Full textThe annual Conference of Parties (COP) held on the 7th-8th of December 2015 made it obvious; the environment is changing and urgent action is needed globally. Globally for the reason that damage done to the environment in one region, may have impacts in other regions. In regards to Africa and in specific South Africa, water as a finite resource is no more available as it was decades ago. This fact needs to be addressed with urgency, as human survival heavily depends on water – especially in Africa (UN Water, 2006). A part of the literature review will be dedicated to challenges related to water and its consequences for the African continent. The core of this study will be to highlight the importance of water for human beings and what can be done to raise awareness. Further, a quantitative study in Kliptown (a suburb area in Soweto suffering from water scarcity); by means of a survey was undertaken to understand more about children’s behavior in regards to water. The purpose of the research was to raise the knowledge of 10-13 year old learners and members of the Kliptown Youth Program (KYP) on the value of water and to assess their awareness on environmental friendliness as well as their daily water management. The intervention took place at Kliptown, with members of the KYP; a nongovernmental organization supporting in lifting children out of poverty. A pre and a post questionnaire was conducted as well as short video clips shown to KYP members, explaining water scarcity and climate change; supported by some recommendations on how to save water in their current environment. Random sampling has been applied to 24 members out of the population of 119 grade 5-7 members, ranging between 10-13 years of age. Respondents were of mixed genders. Data collection of the survey was cross-sectional and has been performed by means of pen-andpaper. The whole intervention with the filling out of the questionnaires, including the video clips and short presentation took about 90 minutes. Data has been interpreted by using descriptive statistics. The outcome provided information on the environmental friendliness of KYP members aged 10-13, their knowledge on the importance of water as well as their pro activeness in regards to the environment and water. Further the study tried to find out whether there is a difference of responses in regards to gender. The outcome of the study will be shared with the Director of KYP to be informed and probably implement recommendations of the study. The outcome of the study revealed that children do not know much about water, however, are interested in knowing and doing more to get acquainted to the topic.

Abstract This research aims to explore the ‘Food Safety Misconception’, ‘perfectionism’ and ‘health consciousness’ and furthermore to explore their relationships on vocational high school students in Yilan County. The measurement of ‘Food Safety Misconception’ has been developed, the measurement of ‘perfectionism’ based on the ‘Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale’ (MPS-F) (Frost et al, 1990) with adding four subscales: ‘teacher expectations’, ‘personal expectations’, ‘teacher criticism’ and ‘personal criticism’ and health consciousness measured by General Health Questionnaire (GHQ) (Goldberg, 1978). Based on stratified sampling, there are 531 students from 7 department within 5 schools involved in this research, the response rate is 94.82%. The results show 1. the safety misconception scale shows index of difficulty around 65.12%, the level of perfectionism is around the median (M=3.00, Likert 5-point scale); the score of GHQ is lower than median (M=2.84, Likert 5-point scale), which means the level of health consciousness is higher than the median. 2. regarding to the correct cognition of ‘safety misconception’, the female is significantly higher than male, the second and third year students are significantly higher than first year students, the top 50% academic performance students are significantly higher than the bottom of 25%, and the students from food department are significantly higher than not from; regarding to perfectionism, the third year students are significantly higher than the first year students, the top 75% academic performance students are significantly higher than the rest of 25%; regarding to health consciousness, the top 25% academic performance students are significantly higher than the rest of 75%. 3. based on the multi-regression with stepwise method, it clearly shows that the influence of correct cognition of ‘safety misconception’ positively and the level of perfectionism negatively can be on the health consciousness (r=.285,R2=.81). Hence, it is better to increase the correct conception of food safety and reduce the level of perfectionism can effectively promote health consciousness for improving health consciousness on the vocational high school students. In recent years, Taiwan government advocated the concept of the “one country, one scenery and one special product.” Through incorporating local industry activities and regional cultural characteristics, it is expected that the declining traditional industries can be restored and sentiment of country loving can be establish. Industry cultural activities combine local culture, industry, and sightseeing together so that the dual goals of industry culturalization and cultural industrialization can be reached. This paper explores the relationship between the consciousness of industry cultural activities and package design of agricultural/special products for Zo-Chen’s Chalk Festival. My study focuses the following issues: (1) how basic attributes of subjects affect dimensions of consciousness of industry cultural activities? (2) how dimensions of consciousness of industry cultural activities influence dimensions of package design of agricultural products? and (3) how basic attributes of subjects affect dimensions of package design of agricultural product? My survey results indicate that industry cultural activities have many benefits on the establishment of brand marketing and have positive contributions on the package design of agricultural/special products. The conclusions of the paper can be explained as following: (a) For the relationship between basic attributes and consciousness of industry cultural activities, subjects’ age, profession, married status and residence have the significant effects on the dimensions of consciousness of industry cultural activities. Especially, cultural rootage, sightseeing leisure, and economic benefit are the most important ones. These findings are consistent with the results of local culture, industry activities and scenery features of industry cultural activities. In addition, variables of the excitement degree, fair prices, overall activities evaluation, understanding of natural scenery, and understanding of agricultural products are significantly related to dimensions of consciousness of industry cultural activities. The results of Scheffe’ Test suggest that the better understanding on the agricultural products is, the higher agreement of dimensions of consciousness of industry cultural activities will be. Such results imply that consciousness of industry cultural activities is important information to subjects for evaluating the package design of agricultural/special products. (b) For the relationship between dimensions of consciousness of industry cultural activities and dimensions of package design of agricultural/special products, my results indicate that cultural rootage, sightseeing leisure, and industry improvement have significant influence on seeing effect, market consideration, and package structure dimensions. (c) For the relationship between subjects’ basic attributes and dimensions of consciousness of industry cultural activities, variables of the overall activity evaluation and understanding of agricultural/special products are significantly related to dimensions of seeing effect, market consideration, and package structure for three agricultural/special products by two-way ANOVA analysis. Such findings imply that overall activity evaluation and understanding of agricultural/special products are critical influencing factors on seeing effect, market consideration, and package structure dimensions. Through above conclusions, this thesis helps to understand how to effectively incorporate package design, agricultural marketing and local culture and thus provides some suggestions and directions about continuous operation of local industry cultural activities.

The history of Japanese education in Taiwan is a long one. The number of Japanese language students is increasing annually. As known by all, Japanese is the second most popular foreign language after English. If student’s learning status can be controlled by the teacher, the capability for self-examination can then be cultivated and learning defects can be improved. If the consciousness of the learning process can be realized, a student can solve their learning problems by oneself and more efficient study methods can be used. As a result, teacher and student should try to understand each other, i.e. learn together. The study includes five chapters. The first one describes the motivation and purpose of the study; relevant literatures are used for reference. The second part clarifies learning consciousness by using points from psychology and gives a definition to the term. Furthermore, it determines the connection and importance between the Japanese language student and learning consciousness. The third chapter briefly introduces an evaluation of Japanese language education using relative evaluation methods. Moreover, it explains the result of the questionnaires. The fourth part presents the learning motivation level, mental status, learning status, evaluation, and development after graduation respectively. Lastly, the fifth chapter contains the conclusion and suggestions for future studies and projects. Key words: learning consciousness, capability for self-examination, learning motivation, mental status, learning status, evaluation
