Abstract:
Abstract The purpose of the paper is to present the potentialities of current non-invasive methods for bottom surveys, including cartometric presentation of its relief and structure in both marine and inland reservoirs. The paper presents examples of results obtained in the Maritime Institute in Gdańsk during surveys carried out at the bottom of seas, lakes and rivers with the use of the same apparatus: primarily, a multibeam echosounder (MBES) to obtain a digital terrain model (DTM); a side-scan sonar (SSS) to obtain a general image of the nature of the bottom (its “roughness”); and seismic profiling (sub-bottom profiler, sediment echo sounder [SES]) to recognise the structure of the bottom. The obtained results constitute a necessary basis for carrying out further specialist surveys (non-invasive or invasive) when needed. Current bottom survey options that use MBES, SSS and SES may be treated as subaqueous equivalents of the subaerial potentialities of a land surface survey using LiDaR and GPR (Ground Penetration Radar).

Abstract:
Background: In 1995, a Rosacea Awareness Program (RAP) was initiated in Canada to make available educational resources for physicians and rosacea patients. Material is in French or English, and is accessible though physician offices and by toll-free telephone. Information was communicated to the public via noncommercial, editorial media. The RAP created a database of rosacea patients in Canada. Objective: We investigated if individuals in the database had a confirmed diagnosis of rosacea, how they perceived their treatment by the medical system, and identified their needs. Methods: A two-page questionnaire was mailed to 7874 individuals registered with the RAP. Thirty percent of these individuals responded. Where comparisons were made a chi-squared statistic was used. Results: Over 70% learned of the RAP via public media. It took patients an average of 5 years to have a diagnosis made after the first symptoms appeared. In the majority of patients (53%) the diagnosis was ultimately made by a specialist. Fifty-eight individuals said they had not discussed their condition with their doctor. Patients were likely to continue on medication that was prescribed (60%) and topical metronidazole was the most common medication used, mostly the gel formulation. Most patients used these twice daily. Patients were very satisfied with treatments and almost 90% had reduced symptoms. Despite receiving explanations and written material, patients expressed a strong interest in more information being available on skin care, make-up, and psychological aspects of rosacea. Conclusions: The RAP provides a needed educational service and is a useful database. Patients are very knowledgeable about their disease, but despite this and excellent therapeutic responses, the patients demand more information.

Abstract:
Survey data indicated that parents (notably mothers) regarded their own parents and partners as the most important sources of parenting information. Respondents were not at all likely to use parenting courses in a preventative sense, that is, to use courses in an attempt to anticipate problems before they occur and consider ways of dealing with them. Parents reported that they would be more likely to attend parenting courses once difficulties had become established. There was a preference for any parenting courses to consist of one-off sessions on particular topics rather than longer courses. Drugs and teenagers’ was the topic most frequently rated as ‘Very important’ for a parenting course. When presented with hypothetical problem situations, parents showed a preference for solving such problems within the family rather than consulting professionals. Parenting courses were not frequently seen as a solution to such problems. Reason for these perceptions are discussed. It seems that the ways in which parenting courses are described (advertised) may be crucial to their acceptance by parents who might benefit from them.

Abstract:
A nationwide survey of juvenile needs assessment examined need deficit factors that are currently measured in the United States. Although most states have some semblance of needs assessment of juvenile offenders, a minority of states have formal needs assessment instruments. The most common needs measured include substance abuse, emotional/psychological dysfunction, violent behavior, sexual abuse and deviancy, family problems, peer association problems, educational deficits, vocational deficits, and physical problems. Recommendations for development of needs assessment measures and associated interventions on the secondary level, as well as the tertiary level are offered.

Abstract:
The Commercial Greenhouse Needs Assessment Survey-1991 was mailed to 201 greenhouse firms throughout Colorado in Aug. 1991. One-hundred-twenty-two usable surveys were returned, a return rate of 61%. The survey contained four sections: Educational Programming Topics; Educational Program Delivery Methods; Needs Other Than Classes; and Personal/Business Data. Results of the Programming Topics section indicated that non-chemical pest control was the subject of most interest (70.6% of respondents), followed by chemical pest control (62.2%). Results of the Programming Delivery Methods section showed that greenhouse operators most wanted workshops (77. 1%). A monthly format (54.7%) was preferred, with evenings (41 .4%) the best time. The Needs Other Than Classes section indicated that greenhouse operators across the state expected visits from the Commercial Greenhouse Extension Agent on an as-needed basis (59.6%), and that 39.2% of the survey respondents were aware of services available from the Commercial Greenhouse Extension Agent. The Personal/Business section indicated that most respondents had a bachelor's or master's degree (53.3%), and were wholesale growers (66.9%) with greenhouses < 50,000 ft2 (67.5%).

Abstract:
82 Background: The need for supportive care services during cancer treatment appears obvious but ranges from 7 to 100% are reported. (McMurray 2001) (Soothill K, 2001). The Commission on Cancer (CoC) requires programs to assess these needs. We report on the rates of identified needs and our survey methodology. Methods: VICC members developed a 41 element survey to assess financial, emotional, and educational needs. Surveys were made available to patients with instructions, but no facilitators (Method 1). Then the same surveys were personally given to patients by two trained research coordinators who randomly selected, instructed and helped patients to complete the survey (Method 2). We report the responses using the two study methodologies. The difference between the two studies was examined using the two-sided chi-square test. Results: Results are presented in Table below. Conclusions: The rate of self-reported need for supportive and educational services in our study was small, but a meaningful minority of patients require assistance with supportive care. Simple unsupervised surveys led to results which were very similar to those supported by more complex and expensive methodologies. These data will inform the design of future survey methodology as well as intervention targets for patient navigators. [Table: see text]

Abstract:
Greenhouse crop producers in Colorado were surveyed in the fall of 1997 to determine their educational, extension, and research needs and expectations. Four mailings were made to a mailing list of 180: pre-letter, cover letter and survey, follow-up post card, and post-letter with another survey sent only to those who had not responded after the third mailing. One hundred and six usable surveys were returned for a rate of 59%. The survey itself consisted of five sections: Educational Programming Topics, Educational Programming Delivery Methods, Research Needs, Extension Needs, and Personal/Business Data. Results were tabulated via simple frequencies. In the area of Educational Programming Topics, 66% of respondents wanted to learn more about non-chemical pest control and 63% were interested in production of perennials. In Educational Programming Delivery Methods, 76% preferred workshops with the most favorable months for attendance being January, September, and October. In the area of Research Needs, 64% wanted explorations into new crops in general and 73% were interested in new insect management strategies. In the Extension Needs section, 76% expected a field visit from extension personnel on an as-needed basis and 51% were familiar with services offered by extension greenhouse specialists. Finally, in the Personal/Business Data section, 43% reported that they held a bachelor's degree, 50% had 16 or more years experience in the industry, and 50% worked in greenhouses less than 50,000 square feet in size.

Abstract:
e22222 Background: Much ongoing work in the field of diagnostics is related to identifying novel and clinically useful tumor markers. However, it is not clear that this discovery is focused on the clinical uses that are most important to physicians. Methods: Consequently, we conducted a survey to assess these needs. Our survey of oncologists, specialists and primary care physicians received 236 responses. Of these, 214 doctors provided their view, ranking with an 8 point Likert scale, for which of eight aspects of cancer that they would like to better differentially diagnose. Of the respondents, 45% were oncologists, 17% primary care, 16% urology and 15% OB/Gyn. Of the physicians surveyed, 57% were in private practice and 32% were in academic medicine, with the remaining 11% in a variety of other settings. Results: As may be unexpected, respondents believed that they still could benefit most from diagnosis itself (indexed score 6.1), followed closely by improving earlier diagnosis or identifying latent disease (5.6), as opposed to simple screening (4.82). The aspects that they believed required the least improvement were prognosis for metastasis (3.6) and prognosis for progression (4.0). Surprisingly, desire for the ability for better treatment planning was unremarkable as well (4.3). We also gauged the respondents familiarity with tumor markers using a 5 point Likert scale. 29% considered themselves very familiar, and only 13% considered themselves with less than average familiarity. Conclusions: The results of the survey suggest it may be useful to consider evaluation of biomarkers which aid early diagnosis rather than disease prognosis. [Table: see text]

Abstract:
Abstract Objective – To discover the attitudes of twelve to fifteen year-olds toward the public library. Design – Mixed methodology consisting of a survey and focus groups. Setting – An Eastern Canadian regional municipality. Subjects – Twelve to fifteen year-old middle school students. Methods – Using a disproportionate stratified sample and multistage clustering, the author mailed 900 surveys to middle school students; 249 surveys were completed and usable. Those students who completed the survey and who also indicated they would be willing to participate in a focus group were randomly selected to participate in nine focus groups with between 7 to 12 students in each group. Main Results – Discrepancies exist between the teens’ level of satisfaction with the library indicated on the survey (high) and expressed in the focus groups (low). Teens seldom use the public library due to: their non-existent relationship with library staff, although teens who were “active readers” used the library more; lack of appealing programs and program promotion; no teen-focused website; poor teen facilities within the library; and an overall failure of the public libraries to include teenagers. Conclusion – Public libraries need to be more responsive to teen needs to attract teens to use the library. To uncover these needs, libraries should use mixed methods of discovery.
