Abstract There are few data concerning the frequency of symptomatic gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding in patients with advanced cancer. In a survey of 800 advanced cancer patients admitted in a palliative care program, the incidence of GI bleeding was 2.25% (1). In the general population, hospitalization for acute GI bleeding is 1 per 1000 (2). The incidence among men is approximately double that among women, and the rate increases markedly with age and with the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) (3).
